Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Amazing property and experience- and would highly recommend! We came during the off season but the staff were so energetic and accommodating! The reindeer weren’t out yet so they had the hearder put them in the penned section so we could take pictures. Dinner at the resort was fantastic each night! We didn’t get to see the northern lights but the overall experience was 11/10!
One of the most amazing trips on my lifetime! I was very concerned reading some of the reviews in the days before we arrived mid January. We arrived "off season" just after the Christmas rush and the food was amazing, we never had to wait for a drink or a table. The husky activity was freezing and often chaotic but such and adventure... and the lights!! I got to check the northern lights off my bucket list! Perfect getaway adventure.
.
Very nice location and comfortable stay. Found couple of staff members to be rude without a reason but overall nice experience.
It was excellent stay
Let me put it straight away to you, visit this resort only if you have the budget to do so, because the cost of stay and food in this place is on a very stepper side. The cost of activities in this resort is much more steeper. Kakslauttanen resort is spread in many hectares of area and the entire place is taken up by the resort. It is more of a theme park rather than a resort is what I feel. The two villages in which the resort is divided is the East Village and the West Village. The east village is the older one and the west village is a comparatively newer village and is much bigger, with bigger restaurant and areas. The resort provides transfers from East Village to West Village to Activities spot etc. In my opinion although Aurora Borealis can be seen from both the villages, the better view could be from West village due to its location and larger area. But beware that the premise has much light pollution so for better view one needs to find dark locations inside the premise. Mindwell that you may see Aurora Borealis in stays ahead in Ivalo and Inari as well, which may have better probability on a not so clear sky day as well. The resort is very beautifully spread out with large and small cabins, Igloos with and without toilet and sauna, and the Kelo glass igloos. There are about >80 of these Kelo glass Igloos, so you may now understand the massiveness of this place. The resort is very beautiful and the cabins are really cute and beautiful and looks very luxurious from inside, it gives the lapish homes vibrancy and experience. I stayed in the Large Cabin since the cost of Keloglass Igloos were very steep. The costings of the large cabins are also steep, and the attraction of Kelo Glass Igloos are only to have a view of Northern lights from the comfort of your cabin which may be suitable for couples but otherwise walking out into the resort premise and viewing it under the cold starry sky is more beautiful and spectacular. All the rooms are equipped with Northern Lights alarm and it buzz when there are sightings. We managed to see a grand spectacle of the Northern lights on one of the nights when the conditions were very conducive and skies completely clear. It continued for an hr. You can see it from the premise as well, we saw it during our Aurora Hunting expedition. The hotel seems to be on the lower end of staffing in terms of managing the customers. As far as the warmth and reception of the staff of the resort goes you will find the staff behavior and interaction to be at the extreme end of the spectrum ie: A group of staff are very cordial, respectful, mannerly, prompt, helpful, Cheerful, always with a smile. On the other end of the spectrum you would find a group of staff who behave unwelcoming, not helpful, ignorant, sarcastic and you may even get to feel that they have a racial overtone. The good ones in the staff balance out the bad ones, thanks to the good ones in their premise, they are very good. The bad ones at the front desk and in the activities would definitely need better trainings and re-skilling on client interactions because they face people from around the world and they represent the good will of the establishment. PS: You would see lots of Indians coming into the resort and I believe 70% of the guest are Asians. So if you are an Indian and get bored by again being with your fellow citizens and want to explore something else then you may rethink and move ahead much deeper into the Artic. For other nationalities: If you are looking at something more secluded, less noisy while having food, spending time in restaurant, calmer place, remote deep into the lap lands, more adventurous etc then you should think of going much ahead into Ivalo and Inari. Be prepared for the cold if you visit in winters, research and read well about clothing, gears, eye protections etc. The best way to visit Lapland and enjoy the beauty of the place amidst bone chilling and hypothermic cold is to layer up with good quality cold wears, the temperature will reach close to -30 degree Celcius. Advantages: 1. Very Beautiful resort with great rooms and amenities 2. Strategically placed in Kakslauttanen 3. Children get lots of space to play and roam around. 4. There are many Nordic activities offered by the establishment, Snow mobil, Night Aurora Hunting, Husky rides etc. Snow mobil can be a great experience but depends on which instructor you are assigned to, this makes all the difference. 5. The restaurant of the resort is very good. I stayed in the west village which has a pretty big one. The staff in the restaurant are very well mannered, cordial, jovial, accommodating, and cheerful. They work around the clock but don't show any sign of frustration or stress to the customers and interact very professionally. 6. Food is good, I wont say that it is out of the world and very good. Probably because I have had better food at other stays before. Their breakfast spread is splendid and lot of options to choose from. Dinner is a set menu if its included in your package and every member can order an entire course from starters, soup, main course, and desert, BUT, the menu is very limited, its the resorts way of revenue generation through pax serving. They have few Indian food as well in the Menu if you like Indian food and have deployed an Indian Chef in their kitchen. 7. They have many assortment of beers, and also offer in-house brewed variety which I found to be good. 8. Activities are good and managed well. Husky safari and Nordic Skiing is a must if you have children because you will love it. They provide transfers to the activities spot and back. If you want to learn Nordic Skiing, I suggest you definitely do it and a very good tutor at this activity will teach you well in the time allotted. Disadvantages: 1. As I said the staff is a mix bag of people and you will get to experience both worlds of behaviors. 2. The location of resort is 40 kms behind Ivalo, so during hazy skies or clouds I wished I had moved a bit more north near Ivalo to see the Northern Lights. 3. The quality of food is good. The quantity of the food is abysmally less, and you may end up ordering from the Ala carte as well paying extra charges if you are famished. 4. The meals have timings which you have to adhere too, and once you reach late, due to possibly being in activities during day time or night, you will have to skip the meal, because all that you will get is small burgers, cookies or chips at the canteen desk or content yourself with drinking beer. 5. The activities cost are sky steep and the cost keeps linearly increasing as you book these. These activities are part of the resorts primary revenue cycle. These activities can make you less by many hundreds of Euro or more depending on the kind and number of activities you book. I felt activities such as snowmobiling in Rovaniemi are way cheap. 6. The accommodation cost of the resort per day as I mentioned is on a very steep side and you may find better priced stay if you move ahead towards Ivalo ahead of Kakslauttanen. What you pay for in the resort can be justified with an experience cost. The cost may have large swings depending on the season and foot fall, hence you may have to plan accordingly and budget it out. 7. The winter gears given for the activities is good but the hand gloves begs for more and is very clumpsy and not good enough for the bone chilling winter especially at nights. 8. The food included accommodation menu has limited choices and it don't give you much leverages. 9. There are no cafes or shops outside the resort premises, so please get everything that you need with you. 10. They charge a holding charge of 300 Euro at the time of check in which I believe is tad too much and the hotel is making money through interests from bank on such hefty holding charges. I have travelled across resorts globally and many don’t have such charges and those who have keep it nominal. Also the money returns back to your account in a maximum time of 14 working days depending on the bank. All in all this is a beautifully architected resort, with great views. A stay with an experience, which you pay for the experience and if you have the budget to pay for it.
Our three-night stay at Kakslauttanen Resort was everything we hoped for. The Kelo Glass Igloo was a highlight—part cozy log cabin, part glass igloo, complete with a fireplace and privacy. We joined so many amazing activities, from meeting Santa and watching the Northern Lights show at the Planetarium to Aurora hunting by snowmobile, where we saw the most surreal northern lights. The husky sledding was another favorite, and we were happy to see that the huskies were well cared for, also after retiring. The Aurora Restaurant had a fantastic vegetarian/vegan Indian menu for dinner and plenty of options at the buffet. The staff—both at the restaurant and the activities—were wonderful. A magical Lapland experience from start to finish!
We stayed at Kakslauttanen Resort for 3 nights, 2 of which in the Kelo Glass Igloo, which has a private sauna, a cozy fireplace, and northern lights views. We filled your days with memorable activities (a successful Aurora snowmobile safari, meeting Santa, a Northern Lights Planetarium show, and husky sledding. We asked around and were happy to hear the huskies are well cared for, also when retired. We also got to meet the owner of Kakslauttanen who was the first person to introduce glass igloos and with that made a huge impact on Finland’s tourism. It was lovely to hear from him and he was proud to show us some highlights at the resort. Overall, Kakslauttanen made sure we had a dream Lapland trip!
Really good experience overall. Recommend highly.
I am deeply disappointed with this hotel and its so-called “expert-led” Northern Lights tours. They claim to offer guided excursions with specialists, but in reality, it’s just an overpriced taxi ride with no expertise, no guidance, and no real effort to enhance the experience. The driver provided no insights, no tips for observation, and showed zero interest in whether we actually saw the auroras or not. When we raised our concerns with the hotel, we received no explanation, no apology, and absolutely no accountability. This is nothing but a money grab, taking advantage of tourists hoping for a magical experience. For the price they charge, this is completely unacceptable. Avoid at all costs!
Great location. Food and Service is very good. Property is very well maintained.
Arctic Dreams and a €600 Nightmare: My Kakslauttanen Review My week at Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort East Village March Arctic experiences abruptly interrupted by a discordant, and frankly, insulting note. The High Notes: My arrival was seamless. Despite a late flight, a friendly, English-speaking driver awaited me, even sharing some Finnish phrases – a warm welcome that set a high bar. The resort truly shines in its curated experiences. The Aurora Hunting with Snowmobile Sleigh was a thrilling introduction to the Arctic wilderness, with a knowledgeable guide who brought the landscape and its history to life. The Reindeer sleigh ride was pure magic, a serene journey through snow-laden forests that I enjoyed so much, I booked it twice! The Kakslauttanen Planetarium offered fascinating insights into the aurora, and the Husky Safari was, without a doubt, the highlight of my trip. The connection with the dogs and the thrill of the ride were unforgettable. The resort's consistent accommodation of my disability throughout these experiences was truly commendable. The Crashing Low: The €600 "Aurora Hunting by Car" Rip-off Then came the 3hr "Aurora Hunting by Car" excursion, a €600, three-hour travesty that shattered the illusion of Arctic perfection. This single excursion cost double all my other activities combined and matched the price of a business class flight with all its perks to the UK. This was not a "tour" or a "hunt." It was a grossly overpriced taxi ride.
Overall, I was very pleased with this experience. The positives: Fantastic facilities offer a truly unique experience -- sleeping under a glass dome! The region is beautiful, and it is unforgettable. The aurorae come when they come -- no control there -- but my last night brought a spectacular display that took my breath away. The food was very good for a large resort: lots of Finnish/local options together with more familiar ones for North Americans. The front-desk service was truly fantastic; I don't know how they stay so patient. . . . My only negative was the requirement to purchase an activity for each day, which surprised both my travel agent and me. That said, the reindeer "safari" (stupid name) was TOTALLY worth it -- enjoyable, unique, and I learned a lot, both about the reindeer that are so central to life in this region and the Sami (indigenous) people who use everything about the reindeer to survive. I loved my reindeer (Otso). and it was a way cool experience. I am an experienced amateur astronomer who rolled his eyes at the "planetarium experience," but it was actually a very good primer on the aurorae that both gave the cultural/mythical aspects while getting the science right in some depth. They won significant points on that. I recommend the place. But know that they suffer from the "large tour group experience" (they can't help that), and meals will occasionally feel like you are trapped on a cruise ship (NOT my taste), but it's manageable -- just be assertive about being seated away from large groups who are oblivious to the existence of other human beings. This was a bucket list item, and I achieved all my goals! Douglas Duckett
I struggled to eat, the food choices were limited to unappetizing poorly prepared meals. The beans were undercooked ( crunchy) too many purée ( baby food) need to offer familiar options for those not feeling adventurous. The eggs appear powered ( like MRE from military. Day 2 meals were very salty. I struggled to find palatable food. Also as the only woman of color in my group I was denied my request to book a ski trip despite pleading & offering to give up other activities ( I have plenty of money to pay) my friend ( Caucasian) asked to book a ski trip right after me & she was promptly booked , so she graciously booked 2 and let me go with her. I loved the grounds, views, husky adventures, but would not recommend due to food and the refusal of service to woman of color. There are other resorts one can partake of the winter adventures.
Fantastic resort! Only one restaurant was open and the food wasn’t great (it was fine, just not great) but everything else made up for it. We stayed in a lovely Kelo-Glass igloo and absolutely loved it. The activities were fun—best were snowmobile, dog sledding and feeding the reindeer.
When we arrived we found that we had booked the east side igloos that have to shower facilities & a long walk through the snow to get to a shared shower room. This was not what we were expecting for such expensive accommodation! Luckily we got help from a great guy named Anastasios who got us into the west side of the property with an upgrade to an igloo with great facilities, where we saw the northern lights! Thank you so much Anastasios for saving our bucket list trip from being a disaster! You have great understanding & very helpful customer service skills! The resort is much better in the west side…east side I would rate not much higher than back packer accommodation at a ridiculous price! The food could be better too for the price!
Given that there a lot of mixed reviews about this resort, let me try and set the record straight. My husband and I stayed here four nights with the first two nights spent in an igloo in the East village and the next two in a small chalet in the West. We got dropped off by the bus from Rovanieme right at the footsteps of the East Village reception making it very convenient to enter the resort. The check-in was smooth given that we were the first ones to arrive but note that they only had two staff members checking guests in so you may need to wait a bit. We were given all the necessary instructions, a map and keys to our igloo. First few things to know about the place - the resort itself is HUGE. East village is smaller compared to the West but there is a fair bit of walking involved especially between the reception (and the dining hall next door) and the igloos. Our stay was in February so with all the snow it took a good few minutes (6-7 at our speed). Please keep in mind the scale of the place. The villages are beautiful, especially when covered with a blanket of snow. The igloos are nearly perfect and we were lucky enough to be given ones in the first row. The igloos are all positioned at an elevation making the view of the scenery and the northern lights even better and less obstructed by foliage. The locks in the doors are not good and you may need a few attempts to get in with the key provided (a common compliant). The interiors of the igloos are exactly as advertised and we found them perfectly adequate. The East village is also far more private, quite and in our opinion, the better option for viewing the aurora. Compared to the igloos in the west village, we'd argue these are superior even without the private shower. The west village igloos are placed too close to each other and with the attached shower space, the illusion of living in an igloo is kinda broken. Of course, this is subjective. The chalets in the West village are pretty, clean and very comfortable too. We had no complaints with either stay option. Transfers to the West village are with periodic shuttles that you can sign up for at the reception. The aurora alarm mobile app they have you install is simple and pretty accurate. The staff is also very easily approachable via Whatsapp. West village is fairly larger and involves a lot of walking. It is also more crowded. Signage throughout the resort is lacklustre and we ran into a fair number of people that were lost. Feedback to the resort to work on the signs please, especially for the winter season when roads are easy to confuse. Regarding dinner - the food is pretty good even if the selections are limited! They have an international menu and an Indian menu at ALL times (three course mneu, NOT buffet). You can ask to see either or both. Dishes are rotated and you can mix and match dishes from either menu. Breakfast buffet is decent as well and if you care about Indian vegeterian options, we found the West village to have 1 or 2 options more than the East for breakfast. I wish they had a varied selection for breakfast though because for guest like us stayinglonger, the breakfast was exactly the same each day. They offer lunch as well (course menu or a la carte). The staff is fairly helpful and kind but pretty busy (and somewhat overwhelmed, especially in the West) most of the time. Activities are well coordinated and pickups and dropoffs are as scheduled. We didn't run into any challenges. For activities, we opted for the 2-hour Snowmobile safari. This one was an average experience - it was much slower paced than we imagined with a lot of stops along the way (for photos). I wish they would offer two variants - a slower, family friendly version and then a more fast paced one for those looking for the thrill of the adventure. We also opted to have the fireplace running when in the Chalet - yes you need to pay 35 euros upfront but the amount of wood they started us with for plenty to have the fire going for several hours across two days. Overall, this a is a great place to stay but looking at the reviews, your experience will vary depending on your personal tastes, expectations and knowing what to expect. Be kind to the staff and they respond in kind and will try to help, as best as they can. Although don't expect too much. We didn't run into any of the challenges mentioned in other reviews. The resort is not perfect of course and fairly expensive as well but most of the experience was smooth and we fully enjoyed our stay.
We booked the kelo glass igloo and were extremely underwhelmed by the entire experience. The food was subpar, the hospitality was non-existent and the activities organized by them were overpriced. There are far better resorts that offer better igloo experiences at a much better price!
We stayed 2 nights in Feb 2025. First night was at the Glass Igloo then Log Cabin at the East Village. Pros: We chose the East versus West for a more authentic experience. Anastasio at the reception desk was accommodating and welcoming. Food selections at the restaurant for Breakfast and Dinner were great as are the ladies, Mailyn and Rochelle, the servers who always had a smile when you walk in. I see all workers really work hard in doing their jobs including the shuttle drivers and the guy who lit the fireplace in our cabin. CONS: East village Glass Igloos could use some renovations. There were some bugs on the floor. Whoever is in charge of booking is a huge let down. When I booked my Glass Igloo reservation, I mistakenly booked for 2 nights. I immediately sent a message to Kaklaustannen and later with help of Expedia reps to have the 2nd night, NOT CANCEL, but switch to Log cabin for comfort of my husband who is 72 years old. They repeatedly denied even though for it’s for medical reasons since my husband has a bad knee and heart issue. I end up purchasing an extra reservation for the 2nd night so he could be more comfortable at the Log Cabin. So I had 2 reservations for the 2nd night!! The management is downright callous, inconsiderate and greedy.Log cabins are actually cheaper than Glass igloos and I initially booked in Oct ‘24. Plenty of time to switch. Even the Expedia reps tried to help and advocated since it’s for medical reasons but to no avail.
Great stay in an actual winter wonderland
This is truly my favorite place in the world. It is such a beautiful resort; it is so magical and doesn't feel like earth. One thing to know, especially if you book through a third party, to get airport pick-up in Ivalo, you have to schedule it with them in advance. It is not automatic. It'll cost you about 90 EUR in a taxi (or at least that's what it cost us.) Other than that hiccup, it really was the best time. I wish I could come back every year!
No accommodating at all. No shower in the igloos. We have to walk so much to find the shower cabin in a negative degree weather. Then there were no signs to follow the route. The cancelled one of plans Husky last minute and did not really accommodate us with any other option. We wasted our whole day and a lot of time staying at this place.
The cabin is so cozy and spacious. The layout also allows up to 6 pax if you are in a big group. You can choose your own corner to spread yourself out. Sleeping under the igloo allows one to experience literally sleeping under the stars. There are also other outdoor activities you can sign up for.
Absolutely amazing!! A+++. We stayed in the 6-bedroom Kelo-Igloo and enjoyed the amazing lodge, service and activities. We went on the Reindeer Safari with the knowledgeable and friendly ladies and got to feed the reindeer afterwards. We also went on the huskie ride and got to mush our own team- the best!! We also went snowmobiling into the forest with our expert leaders. And we saw the aurora borealis on our last night - absolute icing on the cake. Wow!!
Seeing the green and pink skies with moon and stars from a glass igloo was all needed for our special anniversary second honeymoon Perfectly planned with spacious washrooms nd a private sauna No disturbance around with snow all around Just loved it POV : U should be fit enough to travel long distances and enjoy the nature
Staff was excellent
The cozy atmosphere in the igloos and the amazing northern lights what more could you want…
The lodge was amazing. A perfect place to truly relax unwind and watch nature go by. Plus how can you not be happy when you watch the dog sledders whiz by your window
Best and most beautiful place I have ever been to, nothing compares, resort itself is situated in a remote location but with plenty of activities to choose from and friendly staff to look after guests. Definitely recommend, it's worth visiting.
We had an amazing stay at Kelo-igloo. We experienced Northern lights on our last night. The staff from the front office and Aurora Restaurant are all very nice. If we have a request, we just send message via WhatsApp and one of the staff will be right there in the cabin to assist us. Highly recommend!!!
What an amazing experience! The dogs were incredible. They were so excited and anxious to run and pull a sled - like an expression of joy - which provided for a thrilling ride for both driver and passenger. And then we were able to spend time with the dogs after the ride and ask myriad questions, and visit with some of the Husky puppies. A truly delightful two hours with dogs and nature.
- No food options. Bad food for whatever options they have. Take your food along. - The log rooms are very good. Go for them. But these don't have jet sprays (crazy - when almost all other parts of Finland has them). - The igloos are less than okay. Very small. No tables. No chairs. No place to sit. Nothing but only beds. No closets, no place to keep bags. I am shocked that they built the igloos the way they did. Don't choose them. Too inconvenient. Too cramped. Just not worth it.
An excellent resort with beautiful, cozy cottages that keep you warm even in extreme temperatures as low as -30°C. The entire experience was very well organized, and the in-room firewood setup is a must-try for a charming and authentic touch. The food is thoughtfully curated, with great consideration for vegetarians, which was a pleasant surprise. Do note that the resort is in the middle of nowhere, offering unparalleled tranquility — but that also means you should carry some snacks for your room. Stepping out in harsh weather conditions requires caution. Overall, a fantastic stay and highly recommended for anyone seeking a serene Arctic escape!
Property is great. I stayed in the East Village and frequently took the free shuttle at the front desk to the west village. The staff was very courteous and professional. Walking around the snow covered property was like a Disney movie. The food was not bad. Sometimes I did not like their meat options from their regular menu so I ate from the Indian menu and that was always good. Many vegetarian options. The only disappointment was that there is not much entertainment at night after 8PM. Overall, I would definitely recommend this property. Here are some suggestions before you go: Bring a flash light that fits in your pocket, bring head scarf and winter hat and ski pants. Private Taxi transfer from airport to hotel was $95 euros in January 2025. Rent a regular room and only stay at Igloo for the last night. East village is beautiful and less populated.
Had a great stay at the kelo igloo. Glas we chose this for our stay and a great holiday here. Seen the aurora on our first day and appreciate the alarm in cabin and also on the mobile app. Sauna is great too. Staffs are super helpful too.
Excellent service, the staff is super nice and helpful, I would recommend them to everyone. Perfect choice and I was able to see northern lights from my igloo. It was a magical experience.
We had booked the west village chalet and west village igloo for one day each.Though expensive but we felt it was one of a kind experience. The chalet was clean, cosy, spacious and had finnish sauna .There was also a fireplace but you had to pay extra for firewood which we felt could have been included in the price .The igloo was also pretty with bathroom and finnish sauna. You need a shuttle bus to go to bus stop near East village which is free but needs to be coordinated with the reception in advance. Also the lugguage transfer was included which was great considering it was snowing when we arrived. The breafast and dinner was included , the options for breakfast are limited but manageable. The 3 course meal for dinner we opted for Indian menu which turned out good considering the location though the portion was small. We did the reindeer safari here and it was managed well. The staff we encountered throughout our stay were very polite, friendly and accomodating.
It was a great experience staying in there in the arctic. We did see the northern lights from the igloo. The staff and the facilities were just amazing. The food is great too. I highly recommend this place.
In my igloo there was water driping directly on my bed . When i checked in that time around 5:51 igloo was cold i called up at the reception that how can be it be warm v feeling very cold but no one came. An than water dripping directly on my pillow i n my husband slept on one side that means on one single bed I am really upset with it we had very bad experiences as we spend so much to experiences the igloo stay an that was so bad we couldnt sleep whole night. You all shd take proper maintaneances of the property. We have travel from india to experience igloo stay but unfortunately v had very bad experience un this super cold winter dripping from igloo directly on are head its so bad . I have also shared video of water dripping to your manager i really need a compensation for this on priority.
My fiancé and I just stayed one night in one of the West Village igloos and we couldn’t have been happier. From start to finish everything was absolutely incredible! The ladies in reception were lovely, and extremely helpful and informative. The igloo exceeded all of our expectations. After reading a number of reviews with negatives, I have to say I couldn’t possibly disagree more. It’s enchanting. The workers are friendly. The food was fantastic. The igloo clean and so unique!! It was a once in a lifetime experience that I hope to do again.
West village is really a beautiful and extraordinary place. The entire property is wonderful. East village has a different character. It’s also charming but not as grand and open space as the west village. The igloos in the west village are gorgeous. If you want to see the northern lights, it’s highly recommended to stay in an igloo. We also stayed in a chalet but had to come out to check the northern lights. Unfortunately, the northern lights tracker in our room didn’t go off when northern lights appeared but saw it when you look up to the sky in the igloo.
What a magical experience.. we love the East village,, it’s quiet and the staff are super friendly and helpful.. from beginning to end we were satisfied with the service, food in the dining area, the bell boy service.. the excursions are in the west side but we love East side more.. we saw the Aurora 3 nights of our 4 nights stay .. and yes their aurora alarm works.. we came here not for the convenience but for the REAL igloo experience and we are glad we did it.. thank you,, our winter vacation was perfect
Overpriced, overrated, overcrowded, understaffed. At peak holiday times this property is just too large to be able to keep a good quality of service. Staff is overstretched and exhausted having to deal with unruly and noisy groups. I would not recommend a stay there to solo travellers or couples. The location is nice but transport to the nearby village is limited and expensive (100 euros return for a 15 km ride!). The menu fixe restaurant has only three choices, two of which Indian (why??). Activities are ok but not well explained at booking: we discovered that a two hour “adventure” actually lasts only 30 minutes as the rest of the time includes transport, dressing up with warmer clothes (included in the price) and explanations/ instructions. Cabins are nice and well heated and they have a private sauna. They have a kitchenette but unless you bring your own food they are useless given the cost of reaching the closest supermarket. At 800 dollars a night we were expecting something with better facilities and service. This resort has neither.
The staff was incredible. The stay was overall good, the resort is beautiful, though for the price, I expected more. The food left a lot to be desired.
It was a one time event to stay at the glass igloo, we anticipated the weather to be cold but it was unbearable, everyone had to walk back and forth to their cabins/igloo, if they could have offered any shuttle service, it would have been much better. We could not check till 3:15 pm when there check in time was 2pm. We had to contact them multiple times, finally a different very nice receptionist offered us a different igloo which was an upgrade. We were thankful for the upgrade. After reaching our igloo, there was no thermostat and the igloo was extremely cold. We couldn’t reach the front desk so had to walk back in the extreme cold to get someone to fix the heat. The front desk said they were extremely busy and therefore couldn’t respond to the WhatsApp messages. Finally when we back to the igloo, the maintenance guy had increased the heat. We lost our whole evening due to the factors above. This is nothing to do with the resort but we didn’t have any northern lights sighting, of course that was our own luck! We booked our ride back with the resort management, it was 15 minutes late too! Suggestions for the resort management: 1. Increase front desk staff specifically in busy season 2. Provide a shuttle service ( it won’t cost you too much but make the life much easier for your customers)
Outstanding and memorable stay. Great adventures, northern lights and family fun. Food options were limited, especially for dinner and the service ended at 9pm, which didn’t work when we were out on a husky adventure and missed out. BUT, the husky adventure was AMAZING! Overall, an incredible stay!
Very limited shuttle service in the resort and poor scheduling for the shuttle. For the room price they’re selling, they should provide better service, not an excuse to customer.
A great place to stay plenty of activities very friendly staff clean accommodations and also very accommodating. Wonderful wonderful wonderful waiter at the restaurant and the food was very good. Breakfast and dinner included. Can’t go wrong.
I thoroughly enjoyed the keto glass cabin with it's own sauna inside. It was clean with towels and slippers waiting. The trails were clear and easily walkable, day or night. Food was good and the wait staff were very friendly. My missing luggage was delivered right to my room as soon as it arrived. I'd stay here again
Despite not being in the high season, with lots of empty rooms available, the hotel staff insisted that the check out time is 10am and was unable to provide a late check-out even if we are willing to pay extra. I can understand if the hotel is really busy, but there were very few rooms occupied during our stay. Also, breakfast was pretty bad too. But the rooms are spacious.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! This place is one of a kind with glass dome windows in half of our large suite. There are only two of us, but the place can accommodate at least 6. We saw Northern Lights on our last night there and it was an unforgettable sight for a lifetime. The meals were also delicious, coupled with a variety of activities within the resort, such as snowmobiling, reindeer ride, visiting Santa's home etc. We can't wait to go back again soon!
We stayed for 6 nights and enjoyed every minute of it. We loved the Kelo cabin. Everything about this place made for a very relaxing vacation. We were very satisfied the dining each night. They had four main menus that rotated each day. Our favorite excursion was the dog sledding. We have enthusiastically recommended Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort to all of our friends and family.
Great location and facilities - however please advise upon booking if area is closed
The staff at receptions are very helpful to arrange all activities for us at last minute booking. Really appreciate. The only comment is to equip the igloo with more accommodation facility such as hook at toilet, bigger bin etc.😊
Before I made reservations in this hotel I read so many opinions. Some of them was really bad so I afraid book this hotel. But I am so happy I did. Everything was perfect. Everybody was so nice and helpful. Food was delicious especially dinner. I will recommend this hotel ( we spend one night in the igloo) to everyone.
Other than very expensive activities there is nothing to do. It is a beautiful location but very remote. The igloo stay is an experience though and was amazing to view the northern lights.
Great property
It’s good place to spend time with but you will need to spend money too.
Fantastic staff and amazing experience
The stay was truly majestic! Walking around in the snow the views of the trees and the accommodation and dining all made it like we stepped into a Hallmark movie
Stunning resort with breathing taking beauty and plenty of activities. But has become extremely expensive lately. I've been just about every year for a decade now, but I think my most recent trip will be my last. I don't think it represents fair value for money anymore. Owners/operators have let the service quality slide quite a bit. Cabins and location are still fantastic. But there are probably other equally impressive locations with far more friendly welcoming, warm service that are not anywhere near as expensive as this place.
I was surprised that there were no Finnish people working at the resort. The dinner was luke warm not hot. The dessert was not as described and had zero flavor. The smoke sauna was an incredible delight. Over all I’d say the facilities need some updating. I believe the price that you are paying to stay here is not for customer service or food quality or facilities but the experience. If you only are seeking a visual delight and cost is not an issue then I would stay here.
Lovely property
Very bad experience, my friend fell and broke her wrist and the hotel did not have any transportation to go to the hospital, they did not have a pain pill, they called the taxi companies and they could not find a taxi, thank God, someone He offered to take us, we also had 2 activities that same day that we couldn't do and they didn't refund our money. When you arrive you have to carry the suitcases yourself to the room, which are super far away. I don't recommend it. He only cares about making money. he doesn't care about the client, the food was terrible
In the middle of nowhere
The whole facility and dinner looks good. However, the Sauna doesn’t work. The heating dial was missing. A screw of door handle was loose. No service for fireplace at all. I mentioned this just because the price doesn’t match the facilities. I paid a lot and do want to see those facilities works well even I don’t use it.
Dining options are pretty slim but i didnt book this place for the food.
I just love the glass igloo. it was quite an experience. Waking up seeing the sky. It was beautiful. Miss seeing aurora but the experience is unforgettable. Food was good and staff were ok.
I stayed here in September. It was the slow season, so there was not nearly as many activities offered. If you're wanting to go here, I would HIGHLY recommend going in the winter/snowy months. It will be more fun and prettier. Also, be prepared to pay a lot. All the activities offered are really cool, but cost hundreds of dollars each. That said, I enjoyed my time and am really glad I went. Service was excellent. Everyone I talked to was friendly and helpful, and staying in the igloos is awesome even if you don't get to see the northern lights.
Best hotel experience ever! The staff (most of them are expats) treated me like a king. They were nice enough to pick me up with their shuttle bus and gave me extra food for missing some meals. Hospitality is so great! I can't thank them enough. They went above and beyond for me. Staying inside the glass igloo as a hotel room is a dream come true. Time does go by very fast, so sleep less and just gaze at the roof as you are laying down. I'm literally the happiest person on Earth. Thanks Kakslauttanen team! You guys are amazing!
A unique opportunity to explore Lapland experiencing Reindeer sled rides, husky sled rides, snow mobile rides and cross country skiing, topped by the hope to witness the Aurora Northern Lights that did indeed shine across the sky on our second night.
The resort has a very scenic ambiance. The dining hall is very Finnish using natural resources from the property, I assume. Staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. All the activities organized were fun. A bit disappointed with the food menu. I hope there is an improvement in that area.
Once is a lifetime experience. Had a great time overall. The food needs to be more accommodating and non-repetitive. It can do wonders if the focus on quality and taste of the food is increased. Resort is great but is utilized 50% of its true potential. Location A+, Stay A, Pre-Booking support B+, and food is a solid D. If you can figure food this resort can touch a different level of greatness.
It was a wonderful experience staying in a glass lgloos at Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort! We catch the northern lights on the second nights which was so stunning and amazing!
The peace and quiet experience and landscaping around property. Amazing place for spiritual retreat However lacking food quality and staff shortage or lack of service at restaurant and bar area. Needs staff all the time at bar. Waited 20 mins for a cappuccino and no-one in front of me please people. Change menu diversity for breakfast and try to hire chefs a la carte this will give this resort a 100 plus Please add tv in the rooms that is much needed when after dark theres nothing to do other than sleep and eat but if no tv and no good food service why go there Husky tour Reindeer tour Santa claus Skiing Ice fishing Ice breaker tour etc was all great but would not go back till new menu on restaurant (aurora) Overall is an amazing place to stay but once again it will make this resort a 5 star if the above was added Will i go back there
Wonderful experience, excellent services
The only thing nice is the location and property however when it comes to Kakslauttanen (west village) staff they require a lesson on Hospitality, they were highly understaffed & outright rude behind the counter there was an Indian, a European and an Asian. The Indian lady who seems to be a manager needs to be taught how to smile and be courteous and needs to learn to talk to customers and learn manners (I over heard uncourteously boasting we are the first to make the glass igloo). We wanted to book excursions, the Asian lady made a face and replied you should have booked it online, she helped us after but that is so rude The European lady was the kindest and polite, the other two should learn from her. When it came to food,At breakfast there was bread, Jam, cereal, I requested for boiled eggs the hostess said she had only 3 so please take one (surprising in a hotel on Christmas you have 3 eggs) with hundreds of guests. For dinner for vegetarians there was steamed veggies, boiled and baked potato, and only cabbage rolls another day. We never visited the restaurant after these experiences. It is disappointing you pay thousands of euros and all you get is bad service and almost no food. Each and every couple that we met were disappointed and would recommend that you never visit this property, If you do then make sure that you carry your own food!!! To the hotel management, a customer expects service and not to be left hungry... I am a very dissatisfied customer
No showers inside. Everything else was Ok
1.We loved this property. We stayed in the small glass igloo for three nights. Clean, warm, cozy, unique, wonderful grounds, walkable, even the wifi was great when I needed to check-in with work, great experience. BUT- 2. For $600 a night, a tole but no shower? There is room for a shower vs the 200m walks to the barely used shower house. Speaking of the shower house, the sauna hours didn't start until 1700 and were separated by male and female saunas, no combined experience. The breakfast and dinners were included, but were high school cafeteria quality (soups, bread, pasta, with plate cake desserts). No pool, no massage available, no bar open. 3. The front desk staff were heroes, amazing even while working in chaos. All activities meet in the front desk area and people get nervous when it is past the meet time and you are still waiting - so people ask the desk agents. Why not put up a digital sign stating the schedule? You also have to wait in line with the front desk to reserve your dinner time - why not add a digital roster in the rooms, online, or in the lobby, or even a simple clipboard instead of using front desk lines and their time? No pool but you built a massive multimillion dollar art gallery and gift shop? Why not turn the cavernous gallery into an indoor / outdoor pool with saunas, there is room and would give stranded guests a place to go while waiting to check in / check out instead of the lobby looking like the waiting area of a bus station.
By far, Kakslauttanen artic resort (west village) this was the worst place for us in entire Finland trip. Please, please, please do not recommend this place to anyone else. Horrible customer service, pathetic food and the most disgusting front desk. These people at the front desk should not be in the hospitality industry at all. The price for this trash is an absolute ripoff .
Whilst the hotel has some flaws around organisation and food options and choices it is still a once in a life time experience which I would recommend booking
This place is absolutely magical! We had the best time! We first stayed in one of the igloos and switched to one of their Kelos. Both rooms were unique, but we wanted a private shower and sauna so that’s why we switched. The staff was very accommodating and helpful. They made our stay special and stress-free. The food was outstanding too!
Amazingly well maintained accommodation in the region! Must visit for the experience! Highly recommended!
Service and staff were very good to us and they went the extra step but the overall ambience could do with providing value for money spent. The decor inside the glass igloos was below average in terms of design etc
the staff were incredibly great.
Pros: The property was beautiful, the Kelo Igloo cabin was clean, housekeeping staff was incredibly kind. Cons: the temperature is controlled for the igloo and it is miserably hot. I couldn’t sleep because I was sweaty. I didn’t know how hot it would be until we got there. I run hot due to a medical issue and I was completely miserable not being able to control the temperature. They should tell you this on their website. The WiFi was down for all but one day. I asked 4 times for it to be fixed and it didn’t happen until our last night. Without WiFi, the aurora alarm doesn’t work so we missed 2 alarms on the only night the lights were visible. Front desk staff was all incredibly rude other than one kind woman (sorry, I don’t know her name). One lady with curly hair was helping me and then walked away mid conversation and took someone else’s luggage into the storage room and never returned to help me. Lately, the two twin beds that are pushed together in the igloo portion of the room are on wheels and the beds slide across the floor when the wheels were locked. We would wake up 6 inches away from where we fell asleep due to the beds moving as we tossed and turned at night. Disappointed that we spent so much time and money planning this trip and the Kelo was an awful experience.
Stayed at the east wing igloo and pretty hard to locate in the dark. Overall, room and bathroom was pretty small but it’s fine for solo or couple traveler/s, nice view from the glass of the room but didn’t see any northern light on that night. Bed was small but pretty comfortable and breakfast selections were absolutely great, dinner was ok.
Worst customer service i ever experience. Employee from snow mobile insult me, after i spend $600 in snowmobile. Rent a tour for 2 hours and they only give me 1 hour , He don't have manners they dont care about nothing. Super expensive and they make you eat there because there is no more choice. Food was not good. Order 2 time chimney service and never arrived. It was a disaster.
We stayed five nights at Kakslauttanen and had an amazing time doing activities like snow mobiling, reindeer sleigh ride and husky ride. The activities were great & made the stay a great adventure. We stayed at East Village which is the original part of the resort. It's smaller and less packed as the West Village, but some parts are starting to get a little dated (e.g. bathrooms). The large log cabin was nice, but had a hard bed and we only got properly hot water in the shower early in the morning. Later in the day water was always cold. We also stayed in one of the glass igloos which was amazing with the view of the sky, but it was way too warm inside. It was so warm it was terrible to sleep in there as we found no way to adjust the temperature. Other than the paid activities there's not much to do at the resort, but we had one activity per day and time went fast. Breakfast was served in the resort's restaurant and it was pretty good. Dinner was at the same spot with a set menu and a choice of couple different entrees. We had some nice salmon soup, really good chicken, white fish dish that was just okay and a steak which was chewy and not good. Staff was nice, but most of them seemed like they were new there. They were unorganized and unsure of how to get things done. Some of them didn't speak very good English either which created issues for example when they communicated with the local taxis. The resort itself was overpriced, but the activities were worth every penny.
Had a wonderful experience. The Kelo igloo we stayed in was just amazing. It would be great if they improved on the shuttle service within the resort. We had to wait for more than 2 hours for a shuttle to get from East to West village.
The resort sells itself but the management of the resort is lacking terribly. Too long of a wait at meals. Resort could be a first rate resort but they need to go learn from other resorts that are first rate about the simple aspects of how to make it a top notch resort. The activities were a must do. The dog sledding amazing. My husband saw the aurora borealis because we hired a borealis hunter. Another must do.
Excellent place to watch the northern lights. A lot of options for activities
