It's a castle!

Staff fantastic Grounds kept well Facilities fantastic Room fantastic Peaceful and scenic Peacocks squirrels rabbits other wild birds and animals Scenery fantastic
Liked everything
Excellent Breakfast and Lunch
Toilet didn’t flush well
Location beautiful rooms & gardens
Needs a little bit updating & wait to long for good in the restaurant
Staff and food was lovely
I have been wanted to stay here for ages but was extremely disappointed about how tired and unloved it was. It needs some money spending on it to bring it back to the higher standard. There were knocks out of the walls, rotting window sills and skirting, chipping wallpaper and paint, the enamelled bath needs replacing. Air con in the room not working properly so was very hot and we needed to request a fan as windows only opened a small way. The grounds need a tidy up.
The Castle
Old room, not renovated
Location was beautiful. Room was big and we loved the castle surroundings. Receptionists were lovely and friendly as were the ladies welcoming us to breakfast
Drinks were extortionate, there simply is no reason to charge nearly £20 for two drinks. Barman was rude and unhelpful and seemed to annoy many other guests
Large comfortable room, good comfortable beds, good selection of food for breakfast. The beautiful peacocks living in the grounds. Friendly and helpful young team of staff in Reception, restaurant and housekeeping.
Cleanliness of the bathroom. Nice chandeliers throughout but lighting poor. Generally shabby and not a 4 star standard. No criticism of the staff, but the management and general maintenance needs to be improved.
Staying in castle and seeing peacocks
Tired facilities. Poor housekeeping
Room was lovely Surroundings were beautiful
A stunning location with views in many directions with an easy and brief walk to get into town giving access to restaurants, cafes etc if required. The staff were both friendly and helpful throughout our 3 day stay. Breakfast was plentiful and excellent. Our accommodation was satisfactory but basic however in need of basic maintenance.
Unfortunately on our 1st night I could only get cold water from the shower and the hand held shower head was missing. This was resolved the following day... sadly this repair stopped the cold water so it became extremely hot. Staff were apologetic.. didn't spoil our stay but was disappointing.
Excellent location in beautiful surroundings
To many steps to get to the third floor bedrooms
The grounds and the general atmosphere of it being a converted castle
The fact that we were a long way from reception and in particular from the dining room , it took us (oap's) five minutes to walk to the dining room. Unfortunately we were in a room which involved going up a flight of stairs and then many corridors to reach the dining room. We ate in the restaurant the first night but were not impressed with the quality of the food.
The castle is interesting. Really atmospheric and in lovely grounds.
The paintwork was somewhat battered, particularly in the residential parts of the hotel
Sehr schönes altes Hotel in einer Burg. Teils noch etwas staubig angehaucht, passt jedoch zur Stimmung.
Everything was good
A lovely hotel with a maze of corridors and doorways. A castle and hotel full of Welsh history. A true Cymru treasure.
I'm sure if you were overly critical you may find something, however, I didn't.
Beautiful stay in this exceptional real castle accommodation. Amy and Kate on reception made sure everything was perfect and nothing was too much trouble. Amazing decor (we were in the Lilly Langtree room), extremely comfortable 4 poster bed, modern updated bathroom right on theme with rain shower head and great water pressure. Heaps of space in the room with sitting area and dressing area. Excellent food at dinner and breakfast with friendly professional staff. Added bonuses parking and in room safe. Walk the grounds, learn the history, follow the peacocks. Memorable!
Remembering you are in a building that is hundreds of years old, with slightly wonky stairs, and slightly sloping floors here and there. Nothing to dislike.
For a one night stay, it was just right, Breakfast was excellent The staff were excellent and very helpful Bed was very comfortable. The building and the history was fascinating
I did not get the chance to try the gym etc, as my time was only short, so thats my fault. The Bar was a little hard to find :-)
As cortinas estavam soltas, o carpete manchado. O serviço de quarto não arrumou a cama, nem limpou o banheiro. O ar condicionado do quarto não estava funcionando. O café da manhã muito simples e sem variedades.
Ruthin is a small town and has a isolated vibe which was cool. I went to a nearby bar with a pizza place just beside it. The people over there were very nice. I also saw peacocks and rabbits within the castle walls.
Housekeeping was below expectation. Ancient plumbing.
Lovely location, good size room and bathroom. Had a bath.
We only booked standard room, but the decor is obviously old and worn.
Very historic and interesting but clean and comfortable too. Staff are absolutely fantastic. Very welcoming and friendly
Nothing
The castle was beautiful and in a stunning location
The bathroom was cramped with little storage around the sink area. Could have done with a table to place toiletries
Really liked the history of the hotel. The grounds were lovely to walk round, takes you back on time
The bathroom could do with some TLC. The staff at breakfast were too busy talking amongst themselves to notice we were waiting to get our table. The Breakfast was also quite disappointing as it seemed like very low quality products and hot food seemed like it had been sat for a long time despite us eating at 8.30am, a reasonable time for breakfast to be thriving.
The staff were amazing. We had had a very difficult day and they were incredibly supportive.
Lovely hotel and friendly staff
It was an actually castle and staff were so Friendly and good service. Lovely food
Rooms abit dated but it is an actual castle so all good. 👍
Comfortable bed (best ive slept in for a long time) and we travel alot, close to shops, pubs, restaurant at the hotel was great plus bar, loved the old castle and history along side the rabbits and peacocks of the grounds, staff were very welcoming and service was very friendly, dog friendly place which was great as we had our dog with us, breakfast was great can go up for seconds if wanted, we ate at night in the restaurant food was lovely.
The shower to the room didnt have much power to it, slight mould on the tiles round the bath but it is an old place, no hairdryer in the room ( did report to reception on leaving)! ! I could only find 1 bin for dog poop? Should be more located round for ease of disposal. Just minor issues which i have brought up so could possibly be improved for future guests staying!
Breakfast – As expected, a full cooked English breakfast. Beautiful historical setting, steps away from the town centre of Ruthin.
Room – As this is a historic building, there is no lift, and squeaky floorboards are to be expected. The staff were very helpful and kindly carried both of our suitcases up to our room. Our room was on the third floor, overlooking the roof terrace where the resident peacocks hang out. Unfortunately, the view immediately outside the window was not particularly pleasant, with rotting timber, peeling paint and bird droppings. That said, we did have a very close encounter with the peacocks through the windows, which was quite a unique experience. Dinner – Overpriced for the quality. The lamb and steak were overcooked, and the fish was rather tasteless.
Lovely location and it really could be a lovely hotel.
It’s dirty and dated. The windows had mold and it smelt damp. The toilet flush was broken, bath was dirty and it was cold.
Really lovely hotel with lots of history. Staff were fantastic and the peacocks wandering around were beautiful to see. Dinner and breakfast were really good.
The mattress was uncomfortable and needs replacing.
Needs a lift
Great location. Lots of history. Loved the peacocks. Good deal through Groupon.
No lift for disabled first
Great surroundings and gym. Spa was a bit basic but very nice.
Resturahts menu was very limited especially for vegeteeians and quite expensive for what you got.
Restaurant and Bar very attentive.
Nothing
Location/grounds; car park; on-site bar/restaurant; welcoming/friendly staff
The rooms/property is a little tired in places
Location, history, room size
Needs a bit of an update
Lovely location and building
Nothing
booked for 4 nights the room was large the bath 🛁 was large
The room was not clean and very warm due to the weather there was no fan no air conditioning which would be expected due to cost for 4 nights evening meals were expensive The wash basin had cracks in it, I should have told reception while I was still there, because it was so warm in the room I decided to leave the night before
Staff were very helpful. Great location. Interesting castle.
History , location very spacious rooms.
Slight cleanliness dusty in rooms , no available open window or vent to air room.
Area was beautiful Staff very friendly
The bathroom could do with a upgrade shower wasn't the best but everything else spot on!
friendly staff
hotel needs a revamp, its tired and particularly the bathroom needs updating
Beautiful stay and Beautiful food, would stay again.
I loved the whole experience
The hotel is in a great location.
But it is very run down. The upholstery at the top of our bed had two large brown blotches form years of use on it. The food was bland and uninspired.
I loved everything about the castle it was amazing place to stay would definitely come back to visit
Where ut is situated
The room and bathroom werent clean the bathromm being full of mould round bath and shower
great food and staff
bed to soft for me
Absolutely amazing place. Staff are brilliant, food was amazing, facilities were awesome. We didn't want to come home.
Coming home.
Staff were very friendly and helpful, the grounds were amazing and we really enjoyed our stay! Town was only a short walk away and it was all very picturesque. Cot was available upon arrival for my 9 month old which was brilliant.
Dated bathroom that could do with some upgrades, however it wouldn't put us off staying again! :) Tight car park, difficult to get out when there's large vehicles so recommend overflow if you have a big car.
Очень романтично и атмосферно
Официанты на завтраке/ужине непрофессиональны. Но если они ученики-то это можно понять, но хотя бы один профессионал должен быть в таком месте.
Everything from the room to the staff to the location was excellent.
My preference is for a shower rather than a bath but the room had a stand alone bath with shower. As I say it’s not my preferred option.
Great setting. It’s a castle !!! Lovely breakfast, comfortable, nice bar / restaurant. Friendly staff.
Was a bit of a challenge to find and with an event on, just managed to get parked (but was all safe, etc. ). Rooms in process of update and, based on rest of hotel, am sure they will be even better than now when finished.
Beautiful town and amazing setting in gardens and parkland. Lovely outside tables near bar.
It was quite crummy in some of the public areas, chipping paint. Very crummy dingy breakfast room. Breakfast a bit institutional.
Never experienced a more dreadful depressing hotel room It was beyond depressing small and tatty The whole hotel was tatty dated and depressing The staff were very accommodating but the experience was so depressing although we'd book for two nights stay with evening meals paid in advance we couldn't abide staying for another night and left without breakfast The room wa tiny gloomy and tatty and if we hadt beens tired with the journey would have left Immediately to find alternative accomodtion Although the property has lovely features and the grounds are lovely the interior is dire When walking through the corridors to find the restaurant there were buckets in the corridor catching water from obviously a leak not what you want to see anywhere All in all a very upsetting experience and would expect a full refund for the whole amount and have you advisors to check the property immediately
The whole interior needs updating totally It is extremely tatty dark and depressing The histor theme has been lost wit the sheer tastiness and darkness
Everything about this place was amazing. The staff are all smiling and happy to help, The history of the place was interesting to learn. The decor was good and also full of history. The suite was comfy and clean. One of the best places ive stayed
Notthing
The location is perfect, all staff were very friendly and hard working, the grounds were amazing and being located a short walk into the town of Ruthin was excellent so you had everything just there. The Spa was amazing, great treatments and friendly staff, really enjoyed the hot tubs and its great you can book it out for a time slot so you have it to yourself. The breakfast was great very enjoyable. Also loved the peacocks.
I would say a few bins around the grounds would prevent people from just dropping their litter, many areas were closed off due to no maintenance, I think with some care the grounds would provide a better experience for children to play safely and for many people to explore more and enjoy the grounds even more. We had one evening meal (steak and Fish) however it was not what we expected, seemed either cheap ingredients or cooked from frozen, but we did not enjoy the meal. Finally we did see groundsmen working however the flower beds and green areas could do with some better care and attention, even though there was a drought these areas could be kept a little better.
I come here every year, normally with my husband but he sadly passed away so I came here with my sisters & we used the spa facilities too. We had a lovely time.
We were a little disappointed with our evening meals. This is the first time I’ve thought this over the years of going here.
The Aircon did not work in the room and reported to reception, asked for a fan and was told this would be sent to the room and it was not. The temp was hottest on record for that time of year so you can imagine having restrictors on widows how very uncomfortable the room was due to the heat, so the service was very disappointing Drinks were very expensive at the bar paying £7 for a tin of Guinness not even a pint for my partner was a little excessive so drinks were kept to minimal. There was very little choice of draught larger/ales available . The breakfast was awful eggs were dry, bacon undercooked, sausages overcooked and generally not good for the £15 paid per person, really was not worth this and would have been better eating out in a café as would have got better quality. The room was distressed with paint chipping of the skirting, marks on walls and grubby marks on the wardrobes which felt substandard and had better in a 3 star coaching inn, The Evening meal was passable but not the best, we ate because we were very hungry. Chip/fries seem to be served with everything in order to bulk out your plate even when the meal ordered really should not have fries in my opinion such as the lasagna that I ordered, seemed a little odd to me . I had slayed at the castle prior to covid and the experience was so very different and the castle has that castle feel with suits of armour that seems to have been relegated to the store room on this visit and the castle has not been presented to its best. The library bar was closed to the public now which gave that extra special feel on a previous visit and only available for those having corporate events or weddings, Such a shame to deny the majority the experience of such a nice room. The Chairs in the outside area were terrible with holes in the rattan seats in most of them and generally the furniture was very tatty and caught my lace skirt on one which now has a pull, not happy at all. A lot of renovation is needed .
Lack of choice of ales / larger. , plus the price. The substandard rooms, lack of service when requested, the undercooked and overcooked buffet breakfast which was overpriced for the standard we received . Chips served with everything, The disappointment of the lack of the Castle feel that we had experienced prior. Poor value for money as we were expecting so much more with it being a Castle.
Fantastic place to stay
The original historical setting and undone up interiors which give the place a unique back to the nineteen fifties or even thirties feel. The very opposite to an anonymous spic and span modern hotel. Characterful and cosy. Grounds great.
Restaurant too dark and ban on eating evening meals outside a bit shortsighted given dank interior!
Very pleasant staff in all areas throughout our stay. Large room. Goid sausages for breakfast.
Very small issues showing lack of attention to detail in a supposedly better room :nowhere to put things down in the bathroom, no holder for toilet roll, just one teaspoon on the tea tray!! Breakfast area tricky to negotiate . Dreadful service for dinner..food good serving staff very pleasant but waited much too long between courses & gave up trying to order dessert.
Dirty underwear in the room , wouldn’t accommodate my allergies, mold and leaking bath , payed for Food and didn’t receive it
The history of the castle.
No lifts, but I understand it is an old building
The peacocks, the view, and the cheerful receptionists
Breakfast - no porridge and the coffee soon ran out and was not immediately replaced
The location is just perfect, surrounded by rolling countryside, genuine medieval walls, fabulous original features, real world history. Peacocks, rabbits and sheep wandered freely in the gardens. Extremely comfortable bed, great shower and bath, air conditioning that actually works. The staff were all very helpful, friendly and couldn’t do more to help us. The food was exquisite.
Absolutely nothing
Great location
Very very tired, not overly sure there is anyone actually “managing” the place. It felt like none of the staff either knew what they were doing nor cared that much. It would benefit from some money being spent on it as could be a stunning venue. Even a bit of background music in the restaurant would go a long way
Het is een prachtige en bijzondere locatie en niet duur.
Het kasteel heeft echt onderhoud nodig. Alles is in verval. Het ontbijt en diner zou ik hier overslaan, dat is echt beneden de maat.
We stayed at the castle when the weather was beautiful, so the grounds looked stunning. However., if you take a proper walk around the grounds , they are poorly maintained and full of litter. The bed was very comfortable.
The castle is dirty , especially the outside hot tub area. The place is in some desperate need of some maintenance and TLC. Bar was shut at 10am and we told to go to Wetherspoons. Ruthin town is lovely , but we couldn’t get dinner anywhere, apart from the Wetherspoons . Breakfast was poor in the castle also.
Mooi kasteel.
De bedden waren echt van matige kwaliteit, je voelde de veren van het matras. Bij het douchen wordt de grond erg nat.
Gorgeous grounds you can freely walk are amazing and so is the wild life, the staff are beyond a joy to interact with and are a credit to the hotel, the room we stayed in was a suite it was well laid out and decore matched the hotel vibe and was better value than suites at the grovenour in chester. Onsite bar and restuarant for evening is pricey but worth the experience
Bed felt like it had a £40 steel mattress for a suite room it should of been better, i would skip the breakfast its vast but its buffet and mass cooked so poor quality.
Beautiful grounds, helpful staff
Room was a little basic, but clean and comfortable
The staff is really friendly, and the landscape really nice
More clarity about the spa and services included in the fee
Historic hotel in lovely setting . The peacocks were stunning
Some parts need updating. Staff were lovely
Location and comfortable room were great. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Evening dinner was very fresh and excellent.
Breakfast was okay. Food was good but although we arrived at 8.30 not much was left. They had run out of certain items.
Great location and building with charming and polite staff. Good value for money
Sadly the building is a bit battened and in need of love and care - the upkeep cost must be eye-watering. There are gluten free items on the menu but if you are a sensitive coeliac please beware
Good location. Building is great, as are the grounds with the Peacocks and bunnies. Deluxe Room was large and the bed comfortable. Staff friendly.
No wifi in our room. Food is ok, but not great. Water & biscuits in room on first night only. Bed wasn’t made (I had done it) and no hoovering. No sockets by the bed.
Nice room. The castle is very much fun and you can see the slightly faded glory from years gone by. Good position. Good gym.
Not too much at the price.
Breakfast fantastic. Staff very attentive.
Nothing. Loved the peacocks.
Absolutely gorgeous grounds, nice tall ceilings and spacious rooms. Beautiful castle!
There wasnt an open bar seperate to the restaurant
The special experiences from staying in a quirky rambling castle with its varied history. Lovely gardens and courtyards with peacocks roaming freely. Elegantly decorated spa. Food was good and when we had an issue with a poorly cooked dish it was immediately replaced when we complained and we were given a complementary bottle of wine as an apology.
We read in the info sheet in our room that we could get a map from reception for a walk around the castle gardens. At reception, we were given, not a map, but a "Short guide to the grounds" consisting of textual description of where to go (starting at the Rose Garden at the back, whereas the receptionist had told us to start at the front entrance), and which contained several errors and also instructions to go to three places (steps down to grave of the Castle Ghost, short tunnel to entrance of Drowning Pit, stairway to Whipping Pit) that were in fact closed to access.
Excellent staff
Great location, fascinating building but looking a little tired
The rooms are spacious and the beds comfortable. The staff are friendly and helpful.
The hotel looks tired: while the rooms are nice, things like doors and skirtings need to be repainted, and the hallways could do with some refreshing and repaint. Likewise, the grounds are overgrown and untidy in some areas. The breakfast room was very busy, and some of the cooked items had run out, although we had booked our time slot. We had also pre-booked supper, but when we came to the dining room, the staff had difficulty accommodating a table for 4 people.
The character of this hotel is amazing and the grounds a delight. The breakfast was very good and the staff were ready to help with any rquest.
Beautiful building and location and friendly reception staff. Room itself was beautiful if a little dated.
Stayed in a delux room, but was hardly that, bathroom wasn’t worthy of a two star establishment with mould all down on side, rotten wood, weird mirrors, dirty floor and hardly luxury bathroom products. Coffee and tea facilities without spoons or a tray making it feel unhygienic. Breakfast was in the medieval dining hall which was a bit drab on a glorious morning and selection wasn’t great, particularly if you were a veggie.
Delightful snd very considerate staff. F fantastic place, and sad to have to leave early. Many thanks!
Such a beautiful setting
The staff were lovely and very hard working. The castle looks very impressive. The area is quaint. Everything you need is within walking distance.
My biggest complaint is that the spa isn't included in the price, the breakfast is an extra £13 each the evening meal came to well over £90 for 3 of us. (That was just main meals and 1 starter, and 1 bottle of wine) It was just too expensive for what you get. It is supposed to be a spa hotel. There was even a comfortable place to sit outside. Just wooden benches.
Das Gefühl, man übernachtet in einer Filmkulisse von Agatha Christie oder Edgar Wallace. Tolles altes Castle. Diese Ruhe, unbeschreiblich.
Fabulous spacious room .
Spa was dated and tired
Rich in history, the grounds are so interesting to explore! Very comfortable rooms and bed. Good breakfast. Also enjoyed seeing the peacocks wandering around the property.
We felt the restaurant was a bit overpriced for the quality of the food on offer. (Tough lamb fillet.) Also, it’s worth highlighting that there is no elevator, and our room was on the third floor. To be fair, there was the offer of the luggage to be delivered to our room (which we declined), but did see a young female staff member struggling up the stairs with a heavy suitcase, which didn’t feel right.
Cadre magnifique ( jardin avec paons). Chambre spacieuse et bien équipée.
Salle de bain qui aurait besoin d’être rénovée.
The hotel was located in fantastic grounds close to the town centre(5 minutes walk). The room was very clean and the bed was very comfortable. It was a bit of a maze to get to the room but quite interesting walking around inside the castle when lost 😆
Nothing
The staff were very good , the location beautiful,
Breakfast wasn't great a very dated hot plate . And the food sat in fat the bacon was soggy and beans were cold . Toaster took 5 minutes to cook . All equipment requires updating but food was a decent quality .
Location, grounds.
The beautiful surroundings, the friendly staff and the magnificent building! I LOVE this hotel!
Some of the decor does not fit the environment and certain areas were in need of a good clean. The spa needs some tlc!
