Reviewed Sep 8, 2026Location was excellent, with great views The main reception & general surrounds were quite classy & had the atmosphere of an older style hotel of yesteryear- which I liked. The grounds were well kept Breakfast was very good with a varied choice. All the staff I encountered were friendly & efficient.
My room was a little dated & could do with refreshing decoratively. It was decidedly tatty in certain areas. No separate shower enclosure, & the shower over the bath leaked badly. You couldn’t get a consistent uniform spray from the shower head. A/c was rather noisy.

Reviewed Sep 8, 2026Estávamos a viajar de bicicleta e mesmo não existindo local específico para guardar bicicletas em segurança, os funcionários tiveram a cortesia de nos deixar guardar as bicicletas no interior da arrecadação/oficina da pousada.
A pousada mantém o carisma de unidade hoteleira de referência de quando foi inaugurada, infelizmente isso nem sempre é uma mais valia a alguns aspectos merecem actualização. Os valores dos alojamentos estão um pouco inflacionados face ao que é oferecido.

Das Zimmer, dass ich bekam, hatte eine vom schimmelbefallene Wand. Ich habe es leider erst gesehen, als ich schon alles ausgepackt habe und war viel zu müde um mich beschweren zu gehen. Hat man aber darauf eine Allergie oder reagiert sensibel darauf, ist das ein Problem. Es war auch der Sessel extrem schmutzig. Das Zimmer war auch äußerst dunkel.

Reviewed Jul 4, 2026This pousada is set in a beautiful well-preserved fortress town with panoramic views of the Minho River, mountains and countryside. We loved the variety of lounges with picture windows of the scenery. The hotel was built in 1962 and was no doubt very stylish at the time. Now it seems a little dated, but on the other hand, the furniture is solid and avantgarde and nothing feels cookie cutter IKEA style. Loved the fresh flowers and plants carefully tended to everywhere giving it a homey touch. Found everything very clean, breakfast was very good and the building was obviously designed as a very peaceful spot to contemplate the views. Restaurant is currently closed but will open soon they said.

Reviewed Jun 29, 2026The views were spectacular, the Minho River winding between Portugal and Spain among lush verdant trees, cityscapes, hills and valleys.The staff were friendly and helpjul. We had left our bags, and they were already in our room when we returned to check in. A sweet note with pasteis de nata and fruit awaited us in the room. The social spaces were inviting & plentiful, the rooms spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was very good. The pousada sat at the far end of the ancient fortaleza with fabulous trails. Tons of stores and places to eat. We'll definitely return.
There are no elevators, so it's difficult for the mobility impaired. They have some rooms on the main floor. I suggest you request one when you reserve if needed..

Reviewed Jan 4, 2026Amei o atendimento, tanto o Luís quanto a Sara da recepção eram uns queridos, e os demais funcionários (camareira e meninos do bar) também eram muito simpáticos. A localização é excelente , apesar de um pouco afastado das estações de comboio e camionagem, era possível chegar a pé em 20/25 minutos , e a vista era espetacular, a pousada fica num ponto estratégico com vista para a ponte e a Espanha, no final do centro histórico. O pequeno almoço era simples mas tinha de tudo, muito bem organizado e servido numa sala com uma linda vista. O quarto era espaçoso, a cama grande, tinha frigobar e TV com alguns bons canais fechados.
Apesar de tantos pontos positivos, considerando exclusivamente o preço praticado, que mesmo em promoção não foi barato, acredito que a pousada carece de um bom upgrade. A roupa de cama, nomeadamente o edredom e travesseiros não eram muito confortáveis, a cortina do quarto estava rasgada e o espelho totalmente manchado por conta do tempo. Também senti falta de mais cuidado com as amenidades de banho (quase inexistentes). Uma chaleira no quarto também seria de muito bom gosto. Apesar de tudo, deixo claro que os pontos positivos, principalmente a vista e atendimento, me marcaram o suficiente para querer voltar, apesar do preço.

Love that there was a fado performance in the late afternoon. We really enjoyed it. Breakfast was fabulous! We were also fortunate to cross paths with a medieval fair that coincided with our visit.

Reviewed Oct 9, 2025A special stay inside the Valença fortress. We really enjoyed our stay at the Pousada de Valença. It has a classic, welcoming feel — more like a family-run inn than a hotel. The staff were kind and attentive, and made everything easy for us. Our room was spacious and very comfortable, with beautiful views across the hills and the Minho River into Spain. Getting a room with a balcony and view is definitely worth it. The setting inside the walled fortress is one of a kind — quiet, historic, and full of charm. We’d happily stay again.

Reviewed Sep 17, 2025An unbeatable location in the fortress and our room had views over the Minho to Spain. Overall the 1960s/1970s vintage feel was ok but the consequence of that is that many of the fixtures and fittings in the bedroom and bathroom are very dated and certainly the bathrooms are in need of modernisation, although the bathtub was welcome. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful, the bar staff less so. We did not eat in the restaurant so cannot comment but the breakfast was a bit underwhelming, odd eggs and the worst coffee consumed after a week in Portugal. The coffee really needs to get sorted out. The little pastel de nata were very good though. On the whole an underwhelming experience which did not live up to the Pousadas de Portugal’s reputation.
