The only hotel I've stayed anywhere in the world that would not automatically charge the dinner meal back to the room. An extra 2 dinners and 4 breakfasts the restaurant did not sell us! Plenty of excellent options a short walk away. Why would a hotel with an annual rainfall like Hokitika not have a covered area to load and unload luggage and passengers?

Wouldn't bother paying for breakfast at their on-site restaurant, the buffet was underwhelming at best. Didn't try dinner there so can't say anything there.

A shame only a continental breakfast was on offer at the restaurant rather than what was advertised.

Didn't have taller glasses in the room for drinks and weren't allowed one from the kitchen either, the restaurant staff mucked up a basic vanilla ice-cream and instead gave a full sundae with fruit which would've been okay if the wife had been able to eat the fruit.

There was no elevator that we were able to use or directed to. While this was ok for us, some people may not be able to take the stairs.

We were given a room with absolutely no view. Also any time we needed to go into the hotel itself we had to swipe everywhere and were only given one swipe key. The restaurant would not let us put the check on the restaurant tab. Small but issues but altogether became frustrating.

Reviewed Jul 11, 2026Winter season so the hotel was very quiet. If you want the beach view pay the extra for the beachfront view - its worth it. Could see and hear the waves crashing and watched the sunset from the "3rd floor". Room and bathroom were very clean. Under floor heating in bathroom was a nice touch, along with the heated towel rail. Breakfast was tasty, with lots of options - continental, cooked, cereals, toast, muffins, fruit etc. Would definitely stay again.
Despite it being very quiet, the carpark was full. We got the last space next to a badly parked hire car. Not sure where you'd park if there were no spaces available. Perhaps on the street, or next to beach that would require a couple minutes walk with your bags. However parking was free.
