Reviewed Sep 5, 2026Absolutely everything. This is a magical place where nothing is too much trouble & where the team have provided what you might want or need before you have had a chance to think about it for yourself!
Tim our ranger was so knowledgeable and his enthusiasm was infectious. He was so determined to find the animals that were our priorities and he delivered every time.
The team are constantly smiling and the food is incredible. There is a fantastic chemistry in the lodge.
But the fauna and flora are the stars of the show, as is the night sky and the views.
Perfection.
We wish we could have stayed longer.

A little chilly in the main lodge on chilly evenings although the open fires and heaters were very welcome.

Reviewed Apr 27, 2026Nous avons apprécié le calme du lieu, la décoration des chambres et des espaces communs, la nourriture incroyable ainsi que les game drives et le nature walk avec notre guide Joel. Nous avons pu voir enormement d'animaux.
Tout était parfait mais à noter quand même ces quelques points :
- Le véhicule pour les game drives n’a pas de toit, donc en cas de pluie on est mouillé (des ponchos sont proposés).
- Les portions de nourriture sont très généreuses, il vaut mieux demander moins ou sauter un plat (entrée ou dessert au dîner).
- Une “conservation fee” doit être réglée au moment du départ, à garder en tête pour éviter les mauvaises surprises.
- Nous n’avons malheureusement pas vu les léopards.

Reviewed Apr 24, 2026If I could give HillsNek Safari Camp a billion out of 5, I genuinely would. From the moment we arrived, everything was on another level.
We were welcomed with a lovely honeymoon sign, champagne and a fresh fruit platter, such a thoughtful touch that set the tone for the whole stay. The tent was absolutely incredible, honestly incredible, luxurious, beautifully designed, and so well thought out with every detail.
The game drives were surreal. We saw the lion walking right beside the truck, pacing up and down as if we weren’t even there. We also saw a giraffe with a four-week-old baby, which was unbelievable. We managed to see 4 out of the Big 5, and every drive felt like something you’d never forget.
Our guide Tim was excellent throughout knowledgeable, calm and genuinely made every drive special. The experience never felt rushed, just pure enjoyment from start to finish.
The extra touches on every drive were incredible, snacks and drinks at sunrise and sunset stops, hot towels on return, and drinks waiting for us back at camp. Everything was done with such care and attention.
Chef Maggie’s food was exceptional every single day, and her gluten-free bread was incredible, honestly incredible.
Gary and his team were amazing throughout (and we’re sorry we can’t remember everyone’s names), but the level of warmth and attention to detail from all the staff was outstanding.
On our final night, we had dinner set up in the tent to celebrate our honeymoon, which was such an amazing touch and the perfect ending to our two-week trip.
You genuinely could not find something wrong with this place if you tried. It’s one of the most special experiences we’ve ever had, and we’ll be talking about it forever.

Reviewed Apr 23, 2026I have delayed leaving a review but as I keep being chased to do so then I will. The accommodation is fine but be aware as it is not as clear as it should be that there is no A/C. We happened to stay in March when there was insanely hot (40c) weather. It was insufferable. The tent is claustrophobic in that weather without air con. And obviously I appreciate why for environmental reasons they don't have it but one fan just will not cut it. The heat gets trapped in the tent all day and at night you feel like you might actually die. No sleep that's for sure. Also it's pretty hard to position a non floor standing fan to keep you cool in bed. At least have floor standing fans and more than one.
I absolutely again understand why their game viewing vehicles have no roof of any sort but absolutely nowhere is this made clear in advance. I found out when I got in the vehicle. Whilst this might improve the game viewing you are highly likely to fry alive. If I'd have known this I would never have booked so I want people to be aware. In probably 30+ visits to game lodges over nearly 50 years I have never come across this. They proudly say they are the only camp in the park to offer this, well there is a very good reason why other camps don't and if you choose to you need to warn people before they book.

Reviewed Apr 14, 2026A perfect location with a beautiful lodge and with only a few luxury tents it felt exclusive and personal, perfect to unplug and unwind. I particularly liked that guests were able to sit on individual tables at meal times rather than being on one large table like other camps. The outdoor shower was the best shower I have used in the world. The staff were all wonderful and the food was exceptional. The game drives were great with our ranger Tim, he listened to what we wanted to see and delivered opportunities to see and learn about amazing animals - would go back in a heartbeat. Thank you everyone at Hillsnek.

Reviewed Mar 27, 2026I can’t find the right words to describe the beauty and uniqueness of this very special place. For us it was magical. The lodge is private, at the far end of the reserve and in the middle of nature. The whole lodge team is extremely friendly and very professional. They fulfilled every wish and created the best experience for us that we could imagine.
They woke us up with coffee before sunrise and after our first game drive we enjoyed a delicious breakfast, followed by a lighter lunch before the second game drive for sunset. Dinner is a setup three course menu and every dish was very tasty.
The interior is beautiful and the views from the rooms are wild and amazing. Between the drives we could chill at the pool or take a nap.
Our game drives with Ebin our Ranger were mindblowing. We are feeling so blessed rightnow to have seen the Cheetah with her Babies so close and will never forget this moment. Special thanks to him but also to the whole Hills Nek Team for this unforgettable experience.

This was, without a doubt, one of the best stay we’ve ever experienced. With only four tents, everything feels incredibly exclusive and personal. The staff truly make you feel known and welcome — they remember your name and greet you warmly every time. Their kindness and attentiveness are unmatched.
The lodges themselves were spacious, beautifully designed, and clean.
The game drives were absolutely incredible. We saw so many animals up close, which made the experience even more special. A special mention goes to our ranger, Tim, whose passion for wildlife and nature is truly inspiring. His pride in working at Amakhala Game Reserve and his infectious positive energy made every drive unforgettable. Keep doing what you do, Tim!
And to top it all off: elephants came right up to the lodge to drink. There are simply no words to describe how magical and unforgettable that moment was.
We wholeheartedly recommend HillsNek to everyone, and we sincerely hope to return one day.

The luxury tents are spacious and comfortable, perfectly combining comfort with the feeling of being immersed in the African bush.
The game drives were absolutely incredible, with stunning landscapes and amazing wildlife sightings. Every drive felt like a new adventure.
A very special highlight of our stay was our guide Ebin. He was outstanding – incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and always eager to share fascinating insights about the animals and the ecosystem. His enthusiasm made every game drive even more special, and he went above and beyond to give us an unforgettable experience.
The whole team at HillsNek was warm, attentive, and made us feel very welcome throughout our stay. We highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a memorable safari experience.

Reviewed Feb 13, 2026Absolutely amazing experience from start to finish. With only 4 lodges with a maximum capacity of 8 to 10 persons it felt like a bespoke, intimate stay just for you. Superb lodges, main lodge with dining area and pool. Incredible views across the plains. Staff and safari guide were brilliant. All food served was delicious.
If we wanted to be critical, it would be serving of drinks particularly in the evening. The staff could have been more attentive when we came down for dinner and asked our party what we would like to drink as soon as we sat down. Instead we had to ask most occasions 10 or 15mins after being seated and sometimes the starters arrived first.
This also included refreshing your drinks and not asking us for coffee at the end of the meals which would have been nice. Then after the meal the staff were always looking to clear down pretty quickly and close up for the night around 10pm. I fully understand when it is a long day for all of us particularly when you are up and out on the first game drive at 5:15am. However there is beautiful sitting area around the fire place after dinner and it would have been nice to have a nightcap or two before bed some evenings without the feeling of being rushed to go to bed. Just those little touches would make the stay magical.

With only four luxury tents, the experience feels incredibly exclusive. It truly feels like the whole world revolves around you during your stay. And those tents… spacious, elegant, private, with breathtaking views and total tranquility. The food deserves its own paragraph: absolutely outstanding. Every single meal was a highlight, and for a foodie, this place is paradise. The lodge staff are exceptional across the board. Warm, attentive, genuine. Our ranger, Tim, with his encyclopedic knowledge and wonderful sense of humor, is an absolute treasure and made every game drive unforgettable. We'll never stop dreaming about this magical place.

Reviewed Jan 3, 2026Tolle Unterkunft, superfreundliches Personal, hervorragendes Essen! Die Safaris waren ein Traum, unsere Guides Bonbon und Joel sehr kompetent und gleichzeitig lustig, so dass man eher das Gefühl hatte, mit Freunden unterwegs zu sein.
Toller Pluspunkt gegenüber anderen Lodges im Reservat: die Jeeps hatten kein störendes Dach, so dass wir eine tollen Rundumblick hatten. Bei Regen wird man zwar nass, aber die bereitgestellten Ponchos wärmen und halten das schlimmste ab.
Sehr familiärer Rahmen, da es nur vier Zelte und somit in der Regel nicht mehr als acht Gäste gibt.

The game drives were exceptional - our guides Ebin and Timmy were super knowledgeable and delivered truly incredible experiences with the wildlife. Food was great, the braai under the stars was a highlight, and we loved the whole atmosphere of the camp (and the outdoor shower!). Get there ASAP because they take care of you from the moment you arrive and you don't want to miss a second of this!
I can't think of a single thing. I guess it gets quite hot in the toilet in the honeymoon tent in the daytime but then, it's a tent in summer in Africa...

Reviewed Dec 19, 2025Hillsnek is an incredibly special place to stay. If you are thinking of visiting Amakhala, I wouldn't hesitate in recommeding this accomodation. The staff are so freindly, there is a real family feel and you are made to feel so welcome from the moment you arrive. The accomodation is stunning, very spacious and luxurious with lots of nice little touches in the room. The food is wonderful with different choices for each meal, you will never go hungry! The accomodation is totally worth the money because you are not just paying for the hotel, but for the full experince. The safari guides are wonderful, the reserve is incredibly beautiful and we cannot fault our stay.
Shoutout to our guide Ryan who really made our trip!!
It is also really easy to contact the property to organise a transfer from Cheif Dawid airport (1 hour drive) - very easy!

The Lodge was beautiful. A wonderful room, great food, superb attention to detail. Drinks out in the Reserve and around the campfire were just a couple of a very long list of highlights.

Reviewed Sep 14, 2025Es fehlten uns fast die Worte - das war die außergewöhnlichste Unterkunft, die wir je hatten. Eine zauberhafte Lodge mit sehr nettem Personal, das extrem um das Wohl der Gäste bemüht ist, dabei aber locker und nett! Essen der Wahnsinn, alles mit so viel Liebe gemacht. In der ersten Nacht waren wir ganz alleinen in der Lodge, in der zweiten war eine zweite Familie da. Es ist sehr familiär und individuell und man kann neben dem tollen Safari-Erlebnis einfach entspannen. Das Highlight waren zwei Besuche von Elefanten am Pool genau zur richtigen Zeit. Unser Guide Ebin war ebenfalls toll - sehr aufmerksam, unheimlich viel Wissen, wir haben fast alle Tiere gesehen, die wir uns gewünscht hatten! Unvergesslich die Löwen, die plötzlich vor uns nach ihrer Jagd lagen und fraßen. Tolle Lodge, die wir wirklich weiterempfehlen können!

Reviewed Jun 27, 2025Honestly the staff made this the best experience. So professional and accommodating right from pre-arrival. They were flexible to needs, happy to rearrange time tables and drives.
Safari guides were brilliant and knowledgeable. Met some other guests who had the exact same experiences as us so credit the staff.
Food was incredible, wasn't expecting to have such a selection for breakfast, lunch and dinner plus snacks and good coffee all day. They were able to accommodate my mother who has food requirements.
Highly recommend from a couple in our 30s and my parents who are approaching 80s,hope this review helps those who are considering.
No cons, all good, only variables is the weather which thankfully didn't affect us.

There were so many small attentions to detail. Safari drives were great! Only booked for 2 nights but wish we’d have booked for more !

Reviewed Feb 6, 2025The camp is nestled into the foot of the mountain, which makes for an ultra peaceful setting. The food was excellent, and the rangers very knowledgeable and friendly. I had the pleasure of riding with Ebin who was a local and provided detailed historical background to the formation of the reserve, and was also excellent in spotting the animals. The open air cars also make for a more intimate siting experience which I totally recommend!

Das Essen ist exzellent und abwechslungsreich und der ganze Tag ist gefüllt mit Highlights.
Unser Guide Hanri hat das gesamte Erlebnis perfekt gemacht - er weiß so viel über die Natur, und die Tiere, das ist unglaublich!
Wir sind so glücklich, dass wir diese Zeit erleben durften und der Abschied fiel uns wirklich sehr schwer. Danke für alles - wir sehen uns wieder :)

Reviewed Dec 22, 2024Everything about Hillsnek was outstanding. It was my very first time on a game drive ever so I didn’t know what to expect. The pictures on Booking were beautiful already but let me tell you - you will be absolutely blown away when you get there.
We‘ve parked the car rather close to the entry thinking we’d just arrived at the Camp but that’s just when we met Nikki, our guide for the whole trip that picked us up and drove us to the actual campsite. We were greeted with delicious cookies and a welcome drink, getting to know everything and brought to our tent afterwards. You’d think you’ll get a full glamping experience but that was far beyond everything we’ve ever experienced. The bathroom and bed were huge, everything was spotless, no bugs in our tent at any point and the outdoor shower was just the cherry on the cake.
The food was outstanding; everything was displayed so beautifully and every meal was delicious. You’ll never go to bed even remotely hungry.
The service was excellent in any way. We always felt so welcome and highly appreciated all the efforts everyone made - everything was so personal without it ever being too much, everyone was so lovely all the time (even though wake up times are sometimes reallyyy early but you could never tell) and you just felt like home (but even better).
The game drives were outstanding as well. The amount of things we’ve learned thanks to Nikki are priceless and besides the Leopard we were able to cross of the big five right away even though the area is enormous! We’ve stayed four days and didn’t even cover a third of the whole park. The vegetation changes so much throughout the drives and you’re just sitting there in absolute awe.
My personal highlight was the close encounter with the elephants at the poolside. I’ll never forget the time at Hillsnek and can highly recommend it to everyone!

Reviewed Nov 27, 2024Hillsnek exceeded our expectations in every way and gave us an absolutely unforgettable experience. The staff ensured we had a truly special stay that was shared with the other small number of guests. The tents are beautiful and expertly combine luxury with a unique safari feel, overlooking the wilderness and expanse of Amakhala, from the large deck out the front back and side of the tent. All drinks and meals are included and two game drives are included per day (early morning and late afternoon). The drives and guides were amazing, we had so many exciting encounters with the animals, including lion, cheetah, elephant, rhino, antelopes, giraffe and many more. Would recommend at least a three night stay here to make the most of everything this wonderful place has to offer.

It was extremely hot here in late March. So it must be steaming in mid summer. There was no air conditioning.

The staff were so friendly and helpful. Accommodating our every need and making sure we were having the most wonderful time.
The safari was just incredible with only a small number of people in each vehicle it felt so much more personal. Our guide had such brilliant knowledge of all of the animals and was such a nice guy!
The facilities are just brilliant. The most comfortable beds and beautiful bathroom with a roll top bath and outdoor (and indoor) shower to really embrace the surroundings. Each room was private and felt like you could be in the middle of nowhere on your own yet you had access to all the facilities in the main lodge just a 30 second walk along the boardwalks with the most attentive staff.
And finally the food… just wow!!!!

Reviewed Jan 23, 2024We stayed at Hillsnek with friends and had the best time. Beautiful place to stay, on arrival we were welcomed with an elephant drinking at the pool which was amazing! The tent was fabulous, very comfortable bed and a bath with a view! Used the outdoor shower too which was wonderful! Would have loved a day just to enjoy our surroundings but we were here for safari and it didn’t disappoint, 6 game drives over our 3 nights and they all exceeded any expectations we had. Hanri our guide was lovely, very knowledgeable and great fun! Enjoyed the sundowners and hot chocolate in the morning when it is noticeably cooler! The food was delicious and beautifully presented with a choice for evening meal and breakfast. This fantastic experience wouldn’t have been possible without all the wonderful staff who want to make sure you have a brilliant time. They were so warm and welcoming, so many names I couldn’t keep track but must mention Renzo, Jaison, Nadine who were front of house looking after us but not forgetting the lovely ladies with the hot cloths, cooks and cleaners who all contributed to our unforgettable trip. Thankyou everyone x

Reviewed Jan 20, 2024Where to start - from the moment you arrive at HillsNek you are greeted and treated like royalty. The staff are incredibly warm and friendly and bend over backwards to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.
The tents themselves are private and intimate, making you feel like you are the only people in the world as you take in the breathtaking surroundings. The beds are huge and incredibly comfortable, indoor and outdoor showers are perfect after a long morning of exploration and mini-fridge is always stocked for a relaxing drink on your own balcony before heading down for dinner.
Every meal was fresh and authentic, clearly cooked with love by the incredible chefs.
The hospitality extends to the rangers conducting the game drives, who are passionate and friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about the vast array of animals and plants across the reserve. They even took us on a walking safari at our request to let us get up close and personal to some of the finer details that you would miss on the back of a Land Cruiser.

Reviewed Jan 7, 2024We loved out time here. Our guide, Jesse, was knowledgeable and ensured we saw all the Big 5. He even managed to insert us into the middle of the elephant herd...they were within touching distance. The Reserve is in magnificent countryside...Africa stretching to the horizon.
We loved the little touches - the early morning tea, the coffee and drinks breaks during the game drives, the cold towels to refresh us when we arrived back from our drives - all were wonderful.
The elephants coming to drink at the pool at the lodge was the high point of our stay....they stayed for over an hour and Jesse was able to explain to hierarchy of the families under the protection of the Bull elephant....fascinating.
The food was fabulous - great variety and all presented in gourmet style.
The staff were superb. Renzo and his team work tirelessly to ensure everything is perfect.

Reviewed Dec 20, 2023Exceptional camp with really super friendly hosts, staff and guide.
The food is sensational with large portions. The tent is simply awesome, the top furnishings and the exceptional view.
But the game drives are more than exceptional, they are simply phenomenal.
Our guide Jesse has a lot of knowledge and can explain it very clearly.
He found all the Big Five and many more in the huge reserve and we were able to get very close to the animals.
Many, many thanks to Jesse, Nadine, Jaison, Murray and all the staff for an unforgettable experience.

The gamedrives were nice. Our ranger Jesse was really enthousiatic and took good care of us. The tents where beautifull and comfortabel. And Renzo gave the very best service we could wish for.
It was all very good. It was the highlight of our vacation.
Maybe the tents can get hot because there is no airco.
