The property had everything we needed for a comfortable stay, was clean and well-equipped, and it was only a few minutes from Hokitika's town centre, shops, and restaurants. It was the perfect base for exploring the West Coast.
Nothing to complain about. We really enjoyed our stay.

Reviewed Aug 31, 2026Kim is great, such a nice friendly lady with a great sense of humour, it was nice to have a few laughs with her while checking in. My room was lovely and warm when I arrived. The bed was super comfortable and my room was lovely with a great view even though the weather was pretty wild, the room was nice and cozy. Would definitely recommend a stay at Shinning Star.

We weren't aware that it was one cabin split in half. We didnt hear anyone while they were inside but once the got onto the shared deck, it sounded like they were in our room. Maybe we just happened to stay by people who talk loudly but we assumed it would be more private. The main room was clean and comfortable. However, the bathroom needs some work. The shower pressure was great but it came out like a jet. Then theres the mold. The silicone around the shower tap had black mold, the window frame had mold and the wooden wall up to the ceiling had mold.

I had a late check out of 11am, a staff member was trying to get into my room at 10.30am while i was in the shower, i had to go out in my towel to let him know that i had late checkout. Awkward for both parties. Upon booking there was no information regarding an extra charge for having a dog there however this was taken from my payment card during our stay. A lot of built up dust in the bathroom. Sheets had stains on them.

The staff and the comfort as a family with child. I am writing to express my disappointment with the way my family was treated by your reception staff during our stay. At approximately 7:11 pm, we received a call from reception regarding a noise complaint from another guest. We immediately apologized and acknowledged the concern. I explained that the children were our friends’ children staying in other rooms and had only come to play with our child while we were settling in and getting ready to go out for dinner. The receptionist then told us that children from other rooms were not allowed in our room, which we accepted without argument. However, after we had already apologized, the receptionist said, “Don’t make me call again.” We found this comment unnecessarily harsh and unprofessional. We fully respect property rules and would have complied immediately if they had been explained politely. Instead, the way the matter was handled left us feeling embarrassed and unwelcome. I hope you will look into this matter and ensure staff communicate with guests in a respectful and professional manner.
