It was a good place to stay for the night. The breakfast and coffee were both excellent. I would recommend it.
Great view from room of the rock. Easy transport to rock by motocab. So worth it to stay overnight and go up the rock before the crowds. Staff very friendly and accomodating. Good breakfast and on site restaurant. Easy walk into town. Room cozy/rustic with bed a double. Bring your own shampoo, hair dryer and hand towel. If needed.
Cool bathtub on balcony
This hotel was very nice and a very reasonable rate. The manager was unfailingly nice. So nice. Unfortunately, there were a few things that could have been better: 1) As of Feb 2025, there is construction right next door, as new apartments are being built. It makes things quite noisy between 8 am and 530 pm. It would have been nice to receive notice about this in advance of our visit. 2) It would have been nice if shampoo was provided; 3) Breakfast was delicious; unfortunately, however, they both ran out of yogurt & had limited options for children [no cereal, no pancakes]. 4) I also thought it was too bad that, even though our room rate included breakfast, they felt it necessary to charge for more than one drink with your meal (so if you got a coffee, you got charged for wanting to drink a juice, too). 5) They had kayaks for use; but it was 50.000 for a four hour minimum. This is very expensive for Colombia to have this type of four-hour minimum at a hotel. and 6) It was also unfortunately noisy with trucks going by in the early morning. All told, a good backpacker hotel. Beautiful water views. But just felt like even though the manager was so so so nice and lovely -- the hotel itself can get better, even if you have to charge a few more pesos in a nightly rate. Nice hotel, convenient to town, but will not return

Again---like running out of yogurt, like the noise next door, like kayaks---these are just things they can communicate, can do, are fixable. All told, a good backpacker hotel. Beautiful water views. But just felt like even though the manager was so so so nice and lovely -- the hotel itself can get better, even if you have to charge a few more pesos in a nightly rate. A lovely quiet location away from the noise of the town centre but close enough to walk easily. Our room had a small private deck and a bath. Breakfast was included and was cooked to order. The staff were attentive and helpful and very caring when I had a medical emergency, not hesitating to provide me with first aid (there was a lot of blood and they didn’t flinch at cleaning and dressing my wound). Bonus is the lovely ginger cat!
Fantastique
Very clean and wonderful staff. I would have give all areas 5 stars but the hot water did not always work and the walls were very thin, so you could hear the neighbors very easily. Other than that it was great!
Great place to stay above the touristy center; an easy walk or take a tuktuk uphill for 4000 cop (about $1.20 US). Super comfortable bed and soft sheets. Great views of the rock and lake from the lobby and balcony. Sandra, the owner, is wonderful. They have kayaks, but the reservoir is too dry right now. Breakfast at the restaurant is included and tasty. Dinner was even better: limited menu but I loved the salmon, crepes, and salad. The water heater can be finicky. I had to run it for awhile for a hot shower.
This is pretty much is a motel with not even a tv I don’t recommend this place
Guatape is a gorgeous little town, and La Madriguera is a peaceful place to stay, with splendid views and warm service. You can easily walk to the center. A tuktuk from the square up the hill is 4000 COP ($1.10). Be sure to book a room with balcony. Beds are firm, sheets so soft. And the attached restaurant is simple but marvelous. Breakfast is included. I had dinner there twice. Staff speak some English, but a little Spanish is helpful. Hope I can return to kayak when there’s more water in the lake/reservoir. Guatape deserves more than an hour on a day trip from Medellin. Stay.
My partner and I had a quick weekend away in Guatàpe and we are so happy we selected La Madriguera Hotel. The owner, I believe her name was Sandra, was so warm and welcoming. The hotel is very close to the centre of Guatàpe, however, it was very quiet at the hotel. Breakfast was included in our stay and it was so lovely and calm in the little restaurant which looked out over the lake.
This hotel is very close to the city and has beautiful views of the Penal. The on the balcony bathtub was most enjoyable. The made to order breakfast was a great way to start the day. The property does have canoes and kayaks available to guests. The room was very simple. There was no coffee maker, television, or room darkening shades. I wish there was a vanity shelf to place my toothbrush and paste, hair brush, etc. and some warmer lighting.
Guatapé is a beautiful city but we had some issues when it came to the place we stayed at. First the reservation was supposed to include a parking (that was the main reason we went there) but it turns out that they didn’t have one and we had to park our car down the hill with no security and had to bring our luggages up. They did not mention in the application that this service was not available at this time. Second, they had constructions all around and the noises were really loud and annoying at 7am ( it was not really their fault since that’s the city, but they could have at least not given us the room in front of them since the hotel was empty and we saw some vacant rooms further away). Me and my friend also reserved a kind sized bed and we ended up having a double bed with a duvet as a bed sheet, no toilet papers in the bathroom and ONE light. Also, the breakfast was supposed to be open until 9.30am, but they told us it was actually 8:30am. Everything could have been forgotten if when we told the desk lady that they could at least have told us about the parking, she replied that « we should have complained yesterday and go to another place » but we couldn’t because we would have been charged the late cancellation fees. Was definitely not worth the 100$/night price. We tried to ask for a small discount because we paid services that were not given to us. The lady refused! Guatapé is a very beautiful and tourist friendly city though.
Amazing experience. Breathtaking views of the lake. Awesome weather, there’s no need for a/c
We had a wonderful.stay in one of the cabins by the lake. The view from the cabin is breathtaking and is very relaxing and makes up for the basic style of the cabin which was a little bit small. Our cabin had little privacy as the cutains that are hard to close didn't cover the whole window. Sandra was really friendly and welcoming. And the place also offers activities on the lake such as paddleboarding and kajaking.
Place is safe, and clean.
Beautiful view and the lady at the front desk was a excellent host. Breakfast wasn’t good they charged extra for granola and juice
This hotel has the most beautiful location in all of Guatape. The grounds are so beautiful and there are so many nice places to sit to enjoy the view. We stayed in a bungalow and loved it. The view is fabulous. Everyone who works here is so kind and friendly and helpful. We needed help setting us activities and were always helped with a smile. The breakfast is delicious with a fantastic view. We loved everything about this hotel and will definitely be back. It is an easy walk into town, but far enough away to feel secluded and tranquil. If you are considering this hotel, it is absolutely worth it to stay here! There are very reasonable kayaks and stand up paddle boards to rent.
We absolutely loved our stay at La Madriguera, Sandra made us feel at home as soon as we arrived and made sure we always left for the day informed and smiling, such a great host. We stayed in Bunga 1 and it was fantastic, such a beautiful view, private bathroom, balcony and a basic room but with everything you could need. The property is really well kept, the breakfast was fresh and tasty and the little extras like a water and coffee station just add that extra layer of care for guests which is really appreciated. The location is perfect, walking distance to town but far enough away for a good nights sleep. Thank you so much Sandra and team for a great stay, hopefully we will be back one day.
Thank you for the wonderful staff who made our stay in guatape memorable! The room is clean and was accommodating for four girls (bunk beds). They also provide free breakfast which was a plus! But the best part of the hotel was the view! Didn’t disappoint.
Our room is way smaller than it looked at the pictures and was right beside the reception desk, so we heard every conversation outside. Also, its next to a loud neighborhood, at 7:00 we heard heavy construction noise (from outside and inside the hotel). It was a sunday morning so all of this noise was quite annoyings as we wanted to have a nice rest before hitting the road. Its cheap price but not worth it, knowing that theres too many options in the town.
Please be aware of the following if booking one of the bungalows atLa Madriguera. We had booked one of the bungalows offered at La Madriguera for a premium price. We discovered the room contained exactly one bed and one night stand. Nothing else. In the bathroom, there were two towels and two small bars of soap. The towel rack was broken so was difficult to find a place to hang wet towels after a cold shower (there was no hot water). In fact, there was not even a door to the bathroom! Despite using all three blankets available, we were uncomfortably chilly all night. There was no heater and no one on duty to assist. The list of amenities is none. Very little has been done in those bungalows with a guest's comfort or enjoyment in mind. We shortened our stay from three nights to one.
Somehow this was a unique experience - but not a positive one. The only hotel manager during our entire Columbia vacation who was not attentive, not solving (standard) problems. And there were plenty of problems... like no hot water in our bungalow, wrong information on check out times in booking.com etc. Also standard questions like on an airport shuttle were just ignored. Strange emails prior to our stay, asking us to guarantee our reservation by a bank transfer via a Columbian bank- although the reservation was guaranteed via booking.com anyways On the positive side : it is a great and quiet location in some minutes walking distance from the center and it offers great views over the lake and to the Piedra
We stayed this hotel and were very happy. We got “the suite” for a very reasonable price. Very clean, a lot of space, nice bathroom and a famous overview over the lake. People are very nice and helpful. About 10 minutes walking from the center, so very quiet. Wifi and the breakfast were also very good. The best way is to book directly : lamadriguera.hotel@gmail.com
