We have now visited 3 times with our dog, both in the hotel and the cottage. The Compasses is a village Inn and semis very much part of the community All staff have always been very welcoming and the Nepalese food is great
Friendly pub with a good selection of well maintained casks and keg ales. Staff were very helpful and friendly. The highlight of the stay was the delicious Nepalese cuisine with traditional pub food also available. A good value location from which to explore the New Forest.
Nothing
The restaurant and food were excellent. The bed was comfortable and clean.
The night I stayed there was a live band and endless noise from the bar made sleeping before midnight impossible. I could hear conversations in the bar that must have been just below my room. Some of the decor was a bit dated.
The staff were so friendly. The beer garden was in a fantastic setting and the food was amazing.
We liked it all though the furnishings need a bit of an update.
Food was excellent and the staff were very friendly and oblidging
The Nepalese curry we had on arrival was excellent - tasty and all freshly cooked. The cooked breakfast, too, all delicious and eggs perfectly done! The staff who served us were all welcoming and friendly both to us and our dog! The front of house staff member who served us our meals, booked us in and showed us our room did a fantastic job - excellent customer service skills. The giant bed was extremely comfortable and the room clean and spacious.
All was fine
Breakfast was great. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. Location nice and quiet. Shower in room worked very well. Ideal location for function i was attending at village hall, just down the road. Room had plenty of storage if you were staying longer.
Mattress was very very soft, could at least be semi firm. Not the greatest for sleeping.
Comfortable bed breakfast was excellent staff were professional and friendly location super
Nothing it was all good
Food was good. Staff were nice.
We booked the evening meal deal for an extra £55 but it would have been quite a bit cheaper to have paid at the table. Room was a bit "tired". Barrels were put out late and very noisy. Didn't feel it was worth the money.
The Compasses Inn is in a beautiful location, the staff were lovely and friendly, great service. Our evening meal was included in the overall price, we ate from the Nepalese menu which was outstanding, plentiful and delicious. Fabulous breakfast.
Nothing
Breakfast was very good, staff were very attentive, Room was comfortable ,bed clean ,tea/coffee Facilities. A TV what more can you ask.
Well not sure really. It was a bit noisy, but we were above a pub what can you expect but we slept
The Staff were superb, friendly, helpful and cheerful. The Nepalese food was amazing, as was breakfast on day one, sadly not so on day two. The Sunday roast dinners were just about acceptable.
The property was tired and needed much remedial cleaning and decoration work and the bed in Room 7 was both small for two people and uncomfortable with a lumpy mattress.
Very good breakfast, thank you.
Staff were extremely friendly and helpful, bathroom was spotless and bed comfortable
Furniture dated and slightly scruffy
we really enjoyed our stay, the staff were extreamly freindly and helpful. The garden was very nice to sit out in and enjoy the views. We had lunch when we arrived, a very nice ploughmans to share and the best scotch egg we have tasted. We had meals there both nights and tried the nepalise chefs dishes, they were superb on both nights, in fact the peshwari naan was again the best we have ever tasted. breakfast was included in our stay and that was very good we had full english but there were other options. The place could do with a bit of updating but the clenliness could not be faulted and the food and hospitality amazing. very good value and we would stay again.
Very nice people , good garden and field next to the pub.
Could do with a bit of a freshen up in places. Not keen on the black and white look, but it's not a criticism just personal choice
We particularly liked Lex and the other staff who were friendly, courteous and helpful
Staff fantastic, breakfast good too
Bedroom decor a little dated. It was comfortable though and slept well.
Food was incredible the dinner menu was varied and flavourful and the staff were all very pleasant. The bathroom was wonderfully clean and well equipped.the pub downstairs had a very nice atmosphere and the locals are friendly, the location is convenient and peaceful.
The room itself was filthy and all the fixtures dated, stained or damaged. The room was very poorly ventilated and the windows opened to a very unsafe level for a family room with no ability to block them off. The additional bed was a mattress on the floor, which was filthy. The headboard especially was absolutely disgusting with years of stains and the walls themselves were stained and damaged the carpet and sideboards were also disgusting and clearly rarely cleaned. Even the welcome card with local information was filthy. As you should be able to see the images on booking are absolutely nothing like what we experienced during our stay.
Breakfast is what you want, only issue is its from 08;00, as we are here for work means a later start, but if here on a break would be no issue.
A good location for trout fishing in Rockbourne, and the lovely town of Fordbrudge. The pub is adjacent to a recreational ground, so ideal for dog owners ( early walk), that visit the pub.
The staff were really friendly and efficient. The breakfast was excellent. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. A bit tired in places, but it’s an old building so to be expected.
Food at the Compasses Inn was excellent. Reasonably priced, quick and friendly service and always hot.
A little too much noise from staff in the kitchen area late at night.
Very good food. Excellent breakfast. Staff were lovely - nothing was too much trouble. Good sized garden.
Ideal location for us, food & drink great and staff very friendly & attentive.
Ideal location for us, food & drink great and staff very friendly & attentive.
Small TV
Ideal location for us, food & drink great and staff very friendly & attentive.
The Compasses is very welcoming with a very good menu, the real highlight of which is the Nepalese food. The Himalayan Honey Hunter Chicken was fantastic. Other adults in my party tried other dishes on the Nepalese menu and agreed the food was great. There is a lovely garden overlooking the cricket pitch. The countryside and villages are delightful. Would recommend.
The general look of the rooms is a bit tired for these days but very clean and tidy.
Location. Staff were friendly
Bathroom in room 5 was dreadful. It wasn’t spotless the floor was dirty, the silicone sealer was mouldy and it wasn’t all very tired. Carpets were very old and mattress was very lumpy/worn
Nice ambient location
Over priced food which let the hotel down
The food was fantastic had never had Nepalese before and the people that ran it were extremely nice. Was great for the one night we had, but would be great to use as a base for a a slightly longer stay.
Nothing to be completely honest.
This was our first stay at The Compasses inn and I have to say my husband and I have stayed at a few places but this has to be the best place we have stayed in.it was only for 1 night but our stay was excellent. The staff were very friendly and there manners were impeccable, lovely people.Thankyou for letting us stay in your Inn.
There was nothing we didn't like.
Excellent food and varied menu
Room was basic but acceptable, and despite being a pub, it was very quiet. Breakfast was exceptional and all in all, this was a place we’d return to.
Shower was a little tired and didn’t drain very well, and the radiator wasn’t working - but that’s all.
Breakfast appeared to be cooked well before it was plated, Enough variety, cereals, yoghurts, juice, tea/coffee. Staff were lovely and attentive and welcoming
Nothing like the pictures as advertised, it needed a bit of TLC
good location and food was excellent . staff very friendly and helpful especially Sarah .
strange layout of bedroom- wardrobe right next to bed so bedside table had been moved to other side of room and to look in mirror on wardrobe you had to stand against a wall. Was plenty of room to have wardrobe over other side of room so don’t know why it was put there. Room 7.
Very welcoming on arrival dog friendly which was lovely breakfast was very nice room was comfortable and clean enjoyed our stay.
Nepalese menu was excellent. Staff were friendly and courteous.
Over priced for what we got - also then had to add extras for breakfast and a surplus for my dog.
Very friendly staff, great food, we ate dinner, and the breakfast was excellent.
Very friendly and helpful staff , Gurkah menu was really nice, very dog friendly, plenty of walks nearby.
Very tired rooms, in need of updating, leaky bath taps, minimal facilities , cold and damp bathroom.
Good freshly cooked.
Dog friendly Includes a great breakfast Food exceptional
Nothing
The staff were really friendly and helpful and the food was lovely
The rooms are in dire need of refurbishment and redecoration.
The food was excellent. All staff very friendly
The decor was a bit tired
We were on our way home from Cornwall to Essex (350 mile journey) and needed a stopover after about 200 miles. This place matched the bill and is pretty near to the New Forest. We were greeted by a lovely man who couldn't help us enough. We had to wait for 10 minutes whilst they finished our room so we had a well-deserved beer in the front bar. The Compasses Inn is a dated building so we weren't expecting too much. However, our room was pretty big, very clean, the bathroom very clean. There was even fresh milk (just poured as still cold) next to the kettle as well as a jug of fresh water covered. Very thoughtful. We had a walk around the local area - lots to explore if you have the time. Very interesting & old buildings, enclosed ancient paths and a lovely church. We had booked in for dinner and.. .what a delight! There was a choice of Nepalese food, some Indian food, or, if you like plain old British pub food you were catered for. We had a gorgeous Ghurka menu / Nepalese food. My wife who is vegetarian even had a meal made to cater for her. The pub / inn is dog-friendly so there were a dog or two in the dinner room. Not a problem for us but if you don't like dogs, beware. Real ale-wise, only one on cask at the time. But that was quaffable and jolly nice! We both had a good night's sleep - peaceful and restful. The following morning, the breakfast was lovely and the lady who served us was a delight and so friendly. Afterwards, en-route home we dove through miles of the New Forest passing lots of horses, ponies & donkeys, cattle. Absolutely lovely!
NOTHING! All was very good. We would definitely stay here again based on our stay experience.
Food awful
Great friendly staff and good well priced menu.
All good
Great staff, great location for visiting new Forrest. Nice atmosphere and if you enjoy Nepal menu excellent. Dog friendly with entertainment on certain nights , can be noisy if returning to room before 11 pm, but not an issue for us. Enjoyed our stay will return in future.
Nothing
Breakfast and all food was awesome. Felf like a family home. All staff was good and helping. Historical buildings. Very nice can't wait to back again.
Good welcome, friendly locals. My room was spacious and well appointed, with a comfortable bed. A nice choice of food from Nepal or traditional pub food. Good portions and timely served. The bar has a barrel with 6X a big plus for all us real ale drinkers. Breakfast was good great coffee and food all freshly cooked.
Nothing to dislike.
The Compasses Inn was a really friendly place to stay. The evening meal and breakfast were very good. Lovely big comfortable bed to sleep in. The Inn is very dog friendly with plenty of areas to walk.
There was nothing to dislike
Quiet location. Staff were friendly. Room was clean and beds were clean and comfy.
The hotel is extremely dated and in desperate need of a renovation, inside and outside. We had a family room which, despite being clean, felt neglected. Curtains were hanging off the rail, old and tatty furniture downstairs and an old and shabby bathroom with a dirty shower curtain. The attic bedroom gets very hot on a warm and sunny day and there’s only a very small window which can’t be fully opened. We did have a fan upstairs but that didn’t make much of a difference unfortunately. We won’t be in a hurry to return.
Staff were fantastic. We ate in the restaurant two evening trying both the Nepalese and traditional pub menu and could not fault the food.Breakfast was good too.
Very basic but functional room.
Authentiek
Tuin
Freundliches Personal, sehr gutes Frühstück, gutes Essen im Pub.
Zimmer renovierungsbedürftig.
Staff were welcoming, breakfast hit the spot, and the bed was really comfy. Would stay again!
Friendly staff and nepalese food is fantastic.
Bed was okay. Location was okay.
Had to buy cleaning products and clean the place before settling down, bad smell in living room in particular, bathroom has mould and smells. Living room window opens onto a covered workshop, smells of chemicals, couldn't get fresh air in, which was needed with the heat. Had to pay £10 cleaning fee each night extra because we took a dog, should be in the listing. Bedroom upstairs got incredibly hot, only window was a makeshift velux one, that hardly opened, and was difficult to open and close. Front door opens into the car park, it got very noisy as there was a child on a quad bike type thing driving it back and forth. Chairs outside front door old and small, unable to sit outside. Furniture very dated and bashed up. Bedding contained feathers. One old used sponge left under sink, dirty, cafetiere had only plunger and no glass container to make coffee in! Only 2 lots of plates and cups, what are you meant to do when they're in the dishwasher, so had to hand wash, not thought out well at all.
L’accueil, la décoration, la taille de la chambre et ses équipements, l’emplacement
Un rafraîchissement de l’établissement s’imposerait mais ce n’est pas grave : tout le reste compense
Staff was good
Lovely country pub staff were friendly and welcoming breakfast was lovely

The staff were so friendly and accommodating. We arrived late with my two young grandsons and they were so friendly even though they were really busy. Breakfast was again very friendly with the two little ones.
We had a wonderful stay at The Compasses Inn. From the moment we arrived, the staff were warm, welcoming, and attentive, making us feel right at home. The rooms were spotless, beautifully maintained, and incredibly comfortable, ensuring a restful night’s sleep. The food was excellent, with delicious options that catered to different tastes. Every detail, from cleanliness to service, was exceptional. We would happily return and highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing and enjoyable getaway.
Friendly staff.Excellent food.
Breakfast was fine, evening meal selection very good.
Could do with updating bedroom and bathroom
Food was great. Nice atmosphere. Workers / owner friendly
Room needs a little attention - broken picture frame on the wall, bathroom blind broken)
Stayed 1 night here, all the staff are very friendly and helpful. Good customer service. Had dinner and really enjoyed the Nepalese food. Clean and comfy bed. Breakfast is excellent. Would like to stay again when we come back to New forest. I recommend this place.🙂
The room we stayed is a little outdated however we had a good night, comfy bed and clean.
Superb Nepalese cuisine would go back just for the food. Staff extremely helpful and friendly.
Beds were really uncomfortable. TV too small. No where to put your toiletries in the bathroom. OK for 1 night only I'm afraid.
It’s all perfect
Couldn’t fault it
The staff were great, Sarah was incredible helpful. Breakfast was very good.
The hotel needs deep cleaning and some restoration.
Great food and live bands. In the New forest.
Friendly and helpful staff. Nepalese food was fantastic and breakfast is so good. Nice village pub.
Super clean everywhere.
Toilet seat was broken/hanging off the toilet. Bed was basic unsprung mattress. Breakfast was best described as crisp.
Good
It was a nice comfortable room above a pub. I was there for a wedding a few miles down the road and needed an overnight stay. Staff were lovely and friendly, and the breakfast was great in the morning . I left there a happy man .
The property was fine
Fantastic staff & facilities
Nothing to not like
Location good- near to New Forest and main roads. Quiet location. Staff friendly and helpful. Excellent breakfast given.

Staff was friendly and very welcoming, they stayed late after their check in to accommodate me.
Lighting in room
Great location. We had dinner from the Nepalese menu and it was fantastic. Breakfast was included and very good. The staff were lovely.
Rooms were very clean, but basic.
The room was a good size, bed was comfortable.. A quiet location.
It was a bed for the night, nothing special. Breakfast was basic, not terribly good.
The staff were friendly and waited for us to check in late after a very long journey of train delays! The breakfast was generous.
There were quite a lot of guests staying, and so I think more staff were needed to serve the breakfast.
Very friendly helpful staff.. Excellent Nepalese food available, our evening meal was very good indeed.. Breakfast was also very good, we had a cooked breakfast.. Hotel was clean and bed comfortable..
The hotel needs some money spent on general decorating and is a little on the shabby side.. But reflected in the price..
Very good
The bathroom has too much mould , could be cleaner
Lovely location quite and relaxing the staff were so friendly and welcoming breakfasts was well cooked and satisfying. I decided to order dinner at last minute Chicken Korma it was amazing. If your visiting the pub you must try there food you won't regret it I will definitely be back when in the area
No problem
Friendly, helpful staff. Very good value for money. Good food. Clean, comfortable room.
Full length mirror in bedroom would have been appreciated but this is just a minor point.
Friendly Staff
Nothing in particular
Food was fantastic. Needs some tlc.
Great food! Excellent Nepalese curry
A few areas could do with improvement.
The breakfast was great - good choice . The staff were very friendly and attentive to our needs
I was happy with the food and location. I enjoyed my stay
It was probally me, but I had difficulty understanding the man in reception. English wasn't his first language
Really good evening meal, staff were very helpful and there is ample parking. I would say this is a value for money stopover
The only thing that lets this place down are the outside areas, they need some love, care and a clean up,
The staff were helpful and pleasant. As were the locals. The Hotel seemed quaintly empty, which in July, was beneficial to us, but should this have been a warning sign?
I have held onto my comments, to calm down a bit. The room had a broken hall light, a broken toilet handle and no kettle. The window could not remain open,no latch. We used a Deodorant Can to hold it open. Although the package was Breakfast and Dinner inclusive we left The Compasses Inn with an extra bills of £140 55, we think for Food on Friday Evening/Saturday Evening and Sunday.(All inclusive ?) We were charged £47.13 on Friday 4th July at 15.26pm for what we don`t know? we had only been in the Hotel for 26 minutes, without eating! This was on top of the booking Charge of £525.00. On a postive note,we don`t appear to been double charged for breakfast! Bonus! When we booked this adventure through Booking.com we tried to find out if we could swap Dinner for Lunch on the Saturday. I rang the Hotel direct and they said I had to speak with Booking.com,so I did. They then told me ,they would speak to the Hotel. I also sent 2 e-mails ,both to Booking.com and The Compasses Inn, and yes you`ve guessed it ,heard nothing back from either. The only contact I received from Booking.com, was to confirm we could book in at 15.00pm,on the Friday. Just in case you think we are tight ar***,we also paid £3.00,£78.48 and £30.95 bar bills over the period Friday 4th July 15.00pm -Monday 7th July 11.00am. Was this a good deal, or have we been fleeced? ?
The staff. From the welcome at check in, to the chef (who serves a fabulous full English breakfast) & Sarah who was a delight to meet. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay & highly recommended it.
It’s an 100 year old farmhouse, so the rooms are a little dated but none the less cosy. There really wasn’t anything I didn’t like.
We really liked the friendly staff, excellent food in the restaurant and great value for money.
Some of the decor was a little tired
Everything was okay, didn't have Breakfast because it didn't open until 8:30 and that was to late for when your working.
Would have been good to get breakfast before you start on the road.
All food was excellent. Beer and wine also went down well. Very welcoming staff.
Kitchen a bit basic. No way to securely keep windows open in the heat.
Really friendly staff, outstanding breakfast, great value and superbly located for our needs
Nice large room, comfy bed, extremely kind, friendly staff and the best curries...ever.
The garden tables needed a wash.
Big garden smiling staffs and awesome English breakfast with choice of Asian nepali cousins or pub menu. Very quiet environment. Can't wait to come back again.
Peaceful garden.
