We had the penthouse apartment, which was okay..... minimalist but not that practical, couldn't stand up at night.

It was overpriced. Previously we had stayed in better accommodations for a lot less.

This accommodation is in the best location, and the whole complex is incredibly well-considered and just cool. We loved it, and this is definitely somewhere we would hope to revisit. We were riding the Shimanami Kaido, and hadn't allowed ourselves enough time to really enjoy the island or the accommodation and its facilities. Definitely put this place on your itinerary.

A perfect small hideaway in Setoda. We stayed 3 nights at this beautiful place. Everything is done with love and perfection. Just a wonderful place. All the staff is very helpful and super friendly. We immediately felt like home. This is an excellent stop and starting point for many excursions (bike, SUP, hiking etc). We can highly recommend this beautiful boutique hotel.

The food and craft beer at the dining room was exceptional! Location was great for our cycling trip. Staff was great!

Clearer sign on where to check in. We had a hard time finding the check in area and it turned out it was connected to the restaurant we ate at!

家族で4人部屋に宿泊しましたが、ベッドが個室のように一人一人カーテンでしきれるので、ゆっくり休むには快適でした！海も近いし、商店街も近いので散歩するにはとても良い場所です。オーナー様も優しい方で、案内も丁寧にしていただきました。英語が話せるので海外の方でも泊まりやすいかと思います。

ファミリーで泊まるにはちょっと空間が狭いのと、テーブルなどが無いため、部屋でご飯を食べる時がちょっと不便に感じました。トイレとお風呂が他の宿泊者と共同なのでゆっくりはできないかもです。ただ、一人で宿泊など、少人数であれば問題ないと思います！

L'hôtel est très joli et bien placé proche de la mer et a mi chemin sur le parcours en vélo Shimani kaido. Il se trouve à 10 min en vélo d'une plage baignable très agréable après une matinée de vélo. La réception de l'hôtel a une petite boutique adorable pleine de jolis objets. Les lits sont bien équipés. L'accès au onsen public très agréable et joli, a côté est bien mais un peu cher . Le personnel est adorable et parle très bien anglais .

C'est un peu cher pour des lits couchettes avec salle de bain commune. Les matelas ne sont pas très confortables , on sent les ressorts . L'endroit est très calme mais pas très bien insonorisé et comme c'est à côté du restaurant on peut avoir du bruit . Il y a souvent des brosses à dent à disposition au Japon, alors je n'en ai pas emporté car nous avons pris le minimum pour le trajet en vélo. Malheureusement il n y en avait pas c'est dommage surtout sur le trajet en vélo .

Juste à côté de l'embarquadaire, nous avions pris une chambre double et la chambre familiale pour nos grands enfants. Ils ont adoré !

お部屋までの階段がとても急で、少し怖かったです。大きなスーツケースを下すのはなかなか大変でした。

Good location

Room extremely small, no room for the suitcases neithet storage forr clothes. Changing clothes was more than challenging.

Location was excellent for riding the Shimanami Kaido, clean and tastefully decorated

Expensive for what was available. There was also confusion between the twin room I had booked and the small double room I was given (for two teenage boys) which was a shame..

Amazing location and the rooms were top notch. Super private, clean and in true Japan style had everything you needed (and more).

Breakfast options at the restaurant are limited but it’s no problem.

I felt because there were not many places to stay that this property overcharged for substandard services and very basic food and beverage. Also, the room was tiny and extremely expensive for what it was.

The family room with semi capsule setup was a bit tight. A little expensive vs other hotels on the Shimanami Kaido.

Selon les voisins, on peut se faire réveiller par leur pas au dessus de notre chambre.

Absolutely loved our stay at SOIL Setoda! Such a great complex, a very beautiful room, and the VIEW! The food at the restaurant was truly fantastic, and the reception staff were so lovely and helpful when we missed the bus connection from Setoda Parking – lifesaver. We wished we could have stayed longer. We'll be back! (Oh, and the recommendation of the local sento was terrific, what a place! So good to have a sauna as well.)

C’est très peu insonorisé, ce qui ne me dérange pas vraiment, mais le prix est trop élevé pour une chambre si peu insonorisée. Il faut baisser le peix d’au moins 50 yens pour que ce soit plus juste.

Incredible modern stay with lots of lovely touches. Definitely book this if you want clean, beautiful comfort on Shimanami Kaido.

If you’re afraid of heights, avoid some of the second story rooms as the stairs are steep outside.

Nice place to stay but room is small. The restaurant attached is also nice but very small selection for breakfast and not many other options around.

The 4pm check in time is late and they weren’t flexible on this.

Gorgeous view of the sea from our room. Very handy to eat at in house restaurant but recommend you book ahead. Food was great. Staff throughout were fabulous.

Room a little small.

Soil Setoda is our favourite stay on our one month trip. The food was amazing, the location is outstanding - this is one of those special places that’s not over run by tourism. It’s incredibly sensitive to the area, it seems to be contributing positively to the community, and the other visitors seem to be like minded and respectful of this special place. It will hold a special place in our hearts in years to come

The design and layout of the community buildings. The staff were super nice and friendly. The bed was comfortable and having the sento public bath was super nice. The food was excellent!!

The shades don’t make the room completely dark. It was okay for me but might bother some people. Would be nice to have a tv…..

This hotel and its associated concepts (bookstore, restaurant, etc) are so chic and cool - breathtaking really. And the food. Wow wow wow. It’s a hotel you would imagine in the hippest area of California or New York- but this is way better

That I only booked one night.

Great location, very clean, well organised. We liked the little library and the bathhouse very much. The restaurant is a beautiful location and very fun to enjoy meals there.

Staying in a private dorm-style room with children was good and bad. The beds were comfortable and we slept great! But there was no space to store bags. More hooks in the bathroom would allow for all towels to be dried properly. There could be more smart storage worked into the design for such a tight space with small shelves, hooks, and under bed storage use. Better photos of the dorm-style room would prepare guests better for what to expect.

Everything was so comfortable. The staff were incredibly welcoming and kind. Loved the towels too, a wee piece of luxury mid-cycle

I would highly reccomend a stay at Soil Setoda, especially if you are riding the Shimanami Kaido. It's a great halfway stop. The island has a lot of things to see and do. Staff at Soil are very friendly and helpful, rooms are exceptionally clean and comfortable.

Great location and clean, comfortable, modern rooms. Friendly and accommodating staff. Dinner at the restaurant Minatoya was excellent. The grilled deer and squid specials were particularly tasty and good value.

Breakfast was okay, not a tremendous amount of selection.

Beautiful and convenient location along the Shimanami Kaido bike trail. Unique (but cozy and fun!) bunkbed style room arrangement, super clean and modern bath/shower. Had amazing dinner and breakfast at restaurant Minatoya at front of the hotel. Staff was very friendly and welcoming.

The soundproofing is almost non-existent: you can hear conversations from neighboring rooms, people walking in the hallway, doors slamming… it’s impossible to have any peace and quiet. It's on top of a restaurant and after closing at 9pm, the music continues, then you can clearly hear dishes and glasses being put away for a long time, as well as staff talking loudly among themselves. In the morning, preparations for the café start again as early as 6:30am. As a result, the night was very poor and it was nearly impossible to sleep properly. Over 30,000 yen per night is already a high price for a room with shared bathrooms, but the most basic expectation from a hotel is to be able to rest which is unfortunately not the case here. If you are looking for a quiet stay, this is not it. Very poor value for money. Also we were told a reservation for breakfast was not necessary but when arriving in the morning we could not sit at some tables because they were reserved which we found a bit strange...

The restaurant for dinner was excellent. Simple menu but everything was really delicious. Room was good, very comfortable, bright and clean.

We were in the annex housing 2 rooms, so we felt disconnected a hotel experience.

It was a quaint spot and a comfortable space. The view is great. Easy access to Shimanami kaido, ferry and bike rental. Friendly staff. Bath was nice.

Everything is squeezed into a small space. There were 3 apartments in the upstairs area we had. You could hear everything. The bed is not really big enough for 2 larger adults so made sleeping tricky. Very few breakfast options nearby.

We loved this very cool, modern, minimalistic small hotel. The room we had was cleverly designed with different levels incorporating a lounge, bench space, comfy bed and bathroom. The hotel is in a perfect spot to stop halfway on the Shimanami Kaido cycle path. The staff are fantastic. Friendly, welcoming and extra helpful. The restaurant on site is very special too. Meals are cooked on an open fire and were delicious.

Location and breakfast

The hotel receptionist was very kind and got us organized upon arrival. They also received our bags that were sent ahead of us as we were cycling without issue. I was also very impressed with how the bartender poured beer, it is a subtle and often overlooked art to do it perfectly.

I feel this place takes themselves a little too seriously for the quality they actually provide. Despite being paying customers both staying in the accommodation and for dinner, we didn't exactly feel welcome by most of the staff. As hospitality owners ourselves we know it is important to make all guests feel welcome, no matter how humble or important they may appear. Stung a bit extra after cycling hours in the rain to get there. The food at the restaurant was also decidedly average. Not bad by any means, but there is a high expectation in Japan and this place presents itself as elevated both in style and in price. The layout of the property is a little difficult as well, your room is quite small. Essentially a pod and a narrow strip to navigate in-between. This is fine, I understood the situation ahead of time, but on a rainy day they wasn't really a common area on the property. The downstairs is the restaurant which prioritzes their dinner service (as they should of course), but that leaves limited space to really be anywhere other than your sleeping pod on a rainy day. Perhaps with better weather the overall experience would have been better but this was ours.

For our epic, 17-day Japan trip, we were looking for a range of hotel experiences. The SOIL Setoda provided us a comfortable, glamping/'capsule-type' hotel experience, consisting essentially of a discrete bunk-style arrangement (self-contained in our own secure room with adjacent shared bathroom. After a long day cycling the famous Shimanami Kaido route, bringing with us limited baggage (just our backpacks), this was honestly perfect and intended. All the more so because the hotel's restaurant, just downstairs from our front door, was excellent, friendly and truly hip. We had some wonderful conversations and excellent food with there and would have eaten everything off their menu were it not for the size of our bellies.

While we appreciate and understand that the bathroom and shower facilities are shared (ie. first come, first served) and were of excellent Japanese standards with a unique artisan charm, we think they should be a little larger to navigate. The toilet room is what I would equate to being a 'cute phone booth' in size (think economy-class airline bathroom). The separate shower room is a 'slightly' more reasonable size.
