The mushroom farm is a great stop over for us and it’s our third time staying over. We have stayed in the Apartments which are lovely and we’ve just stayed in the studio which was not as nice
I would say that the studio could definitely accommodate a king size bed as the double bed is too small.
Great location for the hiking into the falls. Coffee at the Home Slice bakery was fantastic. The home made pizza was one of the best I have ever had at the onsite restaurant. We stayed at the Round House which although quite old was great. The beds were very comfy. Lots of firewood was provided. Truly an amazing setting. We had a great weekend
Unfortunately, the place was extremely dirty on arrival. We had to clean the shelves in the bedrooms before we could unpack. The dining room table thick with dust and we ended up cleaning the crockery and glasses. The whole place needs a deep clean. The hot water in the one bathroom took a long time to get hot and we gave up waiting on the first night and just used the one bathroom.
It was quiet, maybe too quiet. Would like to have joined in a social event being on my own so would have liked to see more foot traffic in the area. Otherwise, the surrounds were beautiful and safe.
The Wifi is terrible. Could not watch the live rugby feed and there was nowhere locally that it was available to see it (or if there was it was not well advertised). While I appreciate the easy of check in, the lack of contact with the host means you do not have any inside information or contact on local current events.
Instructions were given clearly , the room was neat the kitchen had all the utensils nealty stacked away .
I have no complaints
Most of it.
The bed was unfortunately too hard for older bones. We borrowed a topper from a family member in order to sleep. The bathroom tiles when wet were extremely slippery and no railings to hold on to in the shower or non slip shower mats to feel more steady.
Location very good, quite and save, very nice Pizza restaurant on site
That there was no tv in cottage, but we understand they want to have the farm feeling.
Beautiful location, great food, stunning accommodation, we will definitely be back.
NOTHING
Prachtig uitzicht en een moestuin waar je als gast gebruik van mag maken. Vintage boekwinkel en een bakkerijtje waar je voor een ontbijt terecht kan.
I liked the apartment and the location
It was very noisy because of an event at the restaurant next to the apartment. Management did not inform us ahead that the restaurant wasn't open for guests, because of the event. It meant we had to drive back to Howick for dinner. We planned a relaxing evening after a long drive from Gauteng, and it was not possible.
Such a thoughtful experience. Beautifully arranged. Heaven.
Nix.
Easy key collection Cleanliness
The fire place needs to be attended too - Studio 1
TOMF is an old favourite. Great location in a beautiful area. Easy check in and out process and the dogs loved the wide open spaces. The on-site bakery has something for everyone.
Management needs to pay a bit more attention to detail. Small niggles like the wifi info on the fridge differing from that in the file, a very blunt kitchen knife, confusing recycling/composting instructions. All things that did not detract from our stay at all, but would make a much better impression if they were executed a bit better.
Good location with a beautiful view of the valley. Big spacious bedrooms. Nice fire place
Kitchen very small for a house that sleeps 12. Can do with a dishwasher. Oven didn’t not work properly, kettle leaked water. Also note that there were no heaters in the rooms.
Great location, just 5 min drive from Howick town centre but out in the countryside with sone lovely views. Very organised & easy arrival. Great place for families, with a play area that our boys(6yrs old) loved. Wood burner was a nice treat given the cold spell.
The Mushroom Farm has a cute homely feeling to it. We liled the coziness of the cottage.
Location was ok; note there is a dirt road from the main road to the farm. As it is a farm, very dusty. Cute location, but that's about it.
This is not a suitable hotel for winter. Although it is small and cozy, the fireplace is wholly inadequate to heat the entire flatlet. When you use it, smoke fills the flatlet, so you have to keep the doors open. The window latches don't close properly, so cold air comes into the flatlet. Overall, the maintenance in the flatlet is very poor: latches are broken, furniture is old and threadbare, no extra blankets in the rooms, wood is not replenished daily, there is a very small fireplace, and there is no housekeeping. Although I requested the service, the towels cannot be dried as there is nowhere to hang them. No management or supervisory presence. No welcome when you arrived, just given keys and told to go to your room, cannot get hold of the property by email or phone before you get there, nobody responds to emails, although wifi is available in the flatlet, very poor quality, and can only do browsing. The problem is that there is no signal, so you cannot even use your own data. The breakfast restaurant's service was a serious issue: they get very busy very quickly, and there are not enough staff to serve the few tables. Note that this is not an industrial kitchen that services the restaurant; it is a household kitchen, so everything takes longer. Some other issues - no warmth in the food outlets, very few staff on duty, housekeeping is very poor, says pet friendly and states dogs must be leashed, but no one to enforce this, so everyone brings dogs without leashes, staff not uniformed, so hard to see who is staff, cappuccinos were never hot, although they had the right machine in the restaurant.
It was perfect for us
Neat, cozy and basic
No TV in my room and wifi did not work
The Boutique Apartments were spacious, light filled rooms. Comfortable and clean. Well equipped kitchen. Lovely en suites. Having breakfast included was a huge plus.
If you like farm style living this is the place to stay. From a good old fireplace to a massive cast iron bath. Was really an enjoyable stay.
No fault of the accommodation, but no cell phone signal. But they do provide wifi which was a great bonus.
Location
No hot water No matches for the fire place Gas oven not working
Peaceful. Clean. Loved the organic garden. Modern amenities were good .
Didn’t see much of the staff. I guess because I checked in late. But the owners were communicating about self check in on wattsapp. Which was reassuring.
There were only 3 matches and one small sheet/page of newspaper to start the fire inside the "heater" in the house
Sadly, I left too early for breakfast, but the gesture was appreciated.
I will be back again but there are a couple of things that I would like to see in place. 1. The trails are wonderful, but poorly marked and the map showed a trail that petered out at the dam. 2. I would love that I could let my dogs out into the little apartment garden without my supervision. I loved the trellised plant as a division between the units - they weren't there a year ago, but it would be much better if there was a low fence at the entrance to the "garden" - perhaps something like a picket fence with a gate?
A pizza place on site, liked the food vouchers, and also the dam that we could take the dogs to, dog friendly, lovely fire place inside.
We initially booked the flat, when we were shown it, I wasn’t staying in it. So we paid almost double the price for better. We moved to boutique #4 which I felt was an extension of the staff toilets!!! Which were literally in our garden. We stay alot of places at least ten times a year for dog competitions, this I’ve got to say was my biggest disappointment🫤
Location perfect. Cute rustic cottage. Thabo very helpful and friendly
I booked on booking.com, photos you showed of the chalet was not what I got. Disappointing when you think you getting a certain room and you don't get it when you arrive
The Old Mushroom Farm is a very good place to stay that my family always return to. It's one of those that you know what you're going to get. The unit was clean and spacious for our family. There was free wifi as well, inside the unit. It was great to make use of the restaurant for dinner, which was very convenient for the kids after a long day at Comrades. We'll definitely return.
Overall the Old Mushroom Farm is a great stay. The only improvement I would like to see is more activities for the kids. Whilst I understand the concept of no tv in the unit, to focus on family time, there wasn't too much activity like nearby for kids to enjoy.
Lovely area, beautiful surroundings, great views.
Nothing.
Location, ruime kamer.
De kachel worked niet goed, en het was zeer koed s'nachts
Great location, quiet, well equipped, clean, and comfortable. Spent one night but could have stayed a entire week no doubt. Great pizza too.
Wifi password didn't work.
I really enjoyed the location and the peace and quiet surrounding the property. The views and atmosphere were beautiful and very relaxing after a long day of travel. My room was comfortable, with a good hot shower and a comfortable bed, which is exactly what I need when travelling for work.
Honestly, there was nothing in particular that I did not like. The stay suited my needs perfectly. I know some travellers may be more particular about certain things, but for me it was peaceful, comfortable, and exactly what I needed for my work travels.
We loved the accommodation at The old mushroom farm. The bed was super comfy and the room was super spacious. We loved the fireplace.
Nothing.
Rustic but so peaceful, restful and quaint
Nothing not to like!
Great ambiance to the whole place and in a wonderful part of the country. Also so convenient to both facilities in and around Howick, but also the broader Midlands.
Always an excellent stay.
The view from our cottage was of trees and fields. The fireplace in our cottage was set and we just had to light it. Extra wood was provided. The cottage was spacious, comfortable and had everything we needed. It's a peaceful place where you can relax and unwind. We also enjoyed the on site restaurant where we had breakfast.
It is so rustic, quiet and surrounded by nature the people are down to earth and friendly and I loved the big bath.
We loved the rustic feel to the whole property. The beautiful views and cosy units, it's definitely a place we will come to again. We will try check in earlier next time to get access to all the shops on the property.
We stayed for such a short time so there wasn't much to critisize, nothing bad to say at this stage
The room was very spacious, and situated in a great location for cycling in Karkloof. The Home Slice has great coffee and meals, which was right outside our room.
The wifi is incredibly poor, and at most times didn't work.
This spot is outstanding! WOOOOOOW! you won't be disappointed! The breakfasts, the amenities, the staff, the pets, the views and everything is so well thought out and spectacularly presented. Wifi in the rooms were a pain but i guess thats part of winding down. (I didnt know about paid wifi otherwise i would have used it!) The little fireplaces were so cool - spacious showers and bathrooms, JUST AWESOME! My dog loved it the most!
A little outdoor set would have been nice to have a morning quiet coffee, and the little dam nearby needs a little bench or two but other than that - there is not one complaint!
The place is beautiful and well kept. Lawn surrounding cottages is beautiful and well kept Cottage was very clean, however some blankets need a wash.
Cottage I stayed in was very small. Lounge area is very small. Not enough place to sit . More chairs and benches can be placed outside especially on the lawn. Waterflow and hot water in bath is a problem No place to put your soap
Old mushroom farm accommodation is perfect. A serene ,dog friendly farm with lovely forest walk trails. The owner Sandy is exceptional and always accommodating with any requests.
Prijs-kwaliteit verhouding klopt. Keuken is prima. Zitje buiten. Fantastisch bed.
Verouderde meubels & sanitair. Open keuken voelde niet hygiënisch / wat stoffig aan.
I loved the communal garden and the shops.
Everything was fine.
Everything, the atmosphere the comfort and the staff was very helpful.
Nothing
The spacious apartment and friendly staff makes us want to go back there every time.
What a beautiful property. We stayed as a family in the Loft and couldn’t ask for more. The loft came with every amenity and a lovely fireplace, we had electric blankets for the cold and fans for each room for the heat. The showers were wonderful with good pressure and the space very welcoming to gather in the lounge. We especially loved the breakfast included in the mornings which were very generous and the harvesting garden was a special surprise. The kids spent most of their time jumping on the trampoline. We stocked up on a few books and enjoyed the small shops onsite. Saturday night we had a Pizza on-site from Bite Society and it did not disappoint
One day was not enough I wish I booked more nights. The staff was friendly and welcoming especially Thabo. Thank you very much guys for having us.
Nothing
Amazing
Quaint, rustic accommodation. Suitable for the purpose. Beds were comfortable.
Comfortable accommodation. Lots of privacy. Loved the garden and the ambiance.
The garden needs a little tending. It's a little neglected from my last experience there last year.
Loved the relaxed atmosphere and community vibe. Also the fact that it is not pretentious while still being comfortable and accommodating. Views are gorgeous and the veggie garden is a fantastic bonus. Plus our friends were able to join us with their fur babies which was a win!
There was a wardrobe for hanging clothes but no drawers in the main bedroom for us to unpack our clothes for an extended stay. Also could do with a shelf or unit in the bathroom for toiletries.
Restaurant on site, zipline for my six year old. House was spacious and beds were comfortable.
The Old Mushroom Farm is easily located on the Karkloof Road and close enough to pop down to Howick when needed, but far enough away to enjoy the countryside feel. The property itself is laid out and kept well. We recieved a lovely welcome from Thabo, who helped us book an extra night while we were there. Prior to our stay we were in communication with Sandy, who was very helpful. Our group if 7 stayed at the RoundHouse, a big charming farm house, which has a rustic feel but all the modern amenities we needed to have an enjoyable stay. It was very clean and the beds were comfortable. We had a lovely view looking out across the fields where the horses are kept. This is the perfect accommodation for 2 families as the bedrooms are in two separate wings of the house. The kids (5 y/o and 7 y/o) loved having the playground and vegetable garden being on almost on our doorstep. There is lots of open space for them to run around in and the property is safe with only one road coming in and out, which is at the opposite side of the outdoor communal areas. Having the artisanal shops and cafés onsite is great, especially when it's rainy or when you don't want to cook. The bakery and bookstore are definite must-visits!
The hiking trails
The location and the in property restaurant/ food place
The love that's poured into this place is evident. Every area of the farm offers a uniquely different experience. Super impressed!
The noise on the rooftop of the flatlet at night from uninvited creatures.
All great - thanks - convenient. Great setting. Loved being able to travel with my dogs.
It's not a 'dislike' - but in Flat 1 there's something living in the roof that was very active for a few hours in the night.
Tranquil, beautiful, conveniently close to Howick, amazing coffee shop, comfortable big beds.
Nothing
Location, privacy and quiteness
There was no electricity on Friday and half of Saturday
Very quiet farm land. Tranquil and beautiful. Small shops right next door with a community garden to pick from!
We stayed in one of the Boutique Apartments. I loved the architecture and decor. The bed was huge and very comfortable. The shower was also large. The kitchen had everything that we needed. The room was very spacious.
Although there was a freestanding fan, the room was quite hot. We opened the huge windows and that helped a bit. Unfortunately we didn't get one one the apartments with a garden, but next time I will definitely ask for one.
Nice and quiet. Great location for cycling, running, and escaping from the city
The Flat is a converted farm shed. The attic above my bed sounded like i was sleeping in Noahs Ark! There was ALOT of animals in the roof (not just mice).. and they are VERY active at night!
Location, views very chilled
Location. Unique tunnels. Peaceful surroundings.
No pillow protectors. For hygiene conscious guests, this is a must, not least because it is a low cost solution for keeping bedding hygienic.
Great location! Loved the rustic farm cottage. Friendly staff and great facilities. Will be back
WiFi really slow
The entire location was lovely
The bathroom floor -not being tiled The shower water pressure abit low Cracked bathroom sink A few places by the door needed to be cleaned bit of dust and dirt
The facilities are absolutely breath taking. The farm is peaceful. I enjoyed the morning walk. Beautiful garden too and restaurants.
The rooms deserve a little upgrade.
Relaxing and secluded
All was in order - room lacked Aircon
Interesting venue, lovely surroundings, super dog friendly.
Our unit (cottage 1) had a shocking bbq facility, with no bbq cooking utensils. Badly cracked basin, with very loose taps and terrible water pressure. It looks like all the 2 bed cottages need a big upgrade. Very hard beds need a mattress topper.
