I was expecting more child friendly and safe sleeping options like a cot bed or secure bed…granted the addition of kids to the trip was last minute due to unforeseen circumstances, however, there was an additional charge and I was under the impression that they would be catered for. There was a couch with day beds there but there were no side rails and I did not feel comfortable letting my 3 and 6 year old sleep there alone. Just mentioning this so things can be done a bit differently for other guests with young kids.

Reviewed Aug 3, 2026It is so close to Johannesburg and Pretoria, perfectly situated for a quick couples weekend getaway. The facilities are top class, there is privacy, the owners are friendly and accommodating. The surroundings are beautiful - we even saw waterbuck as we sat drinking our coffee on the porch! The nearby Italian restaurant’s food is incredible, and highly recommended. This is definitely at the top of one of our favorite places to take a break and relax.

The peaceful, tranquil atmosphere made it the perfect place to relax and unwind. What truly made our stay so special was the incredible warmth and hospitality shown by the owners. It was the thoughtful little details and personal touches that stood out from the welcome drinks to the delicious little chocolates, Rusks, nougat and biltong waiting for us. Those gestures made us feel genuinely valued and at home. The accommodation and its surroundings are simply beautiful. Everything is so tastefully designed, aesthetically pleasing, and impeccably maintained. Every corner reflects the care and attention that has gone into creating such a special space. The staff and our host were exceptionally friendly, kind, and always willing to help with a smile. I am especially grateful for how warmly they welcomed both my mom and me. Their kindness made our experience even more memorable. Thank you for such an amazing stay. We left with wonderful memories and truly appreciated every moment. We will definitely be returning and would highly recommend Monkey Thorn to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway with outstanding hospitality.

Reviewed May 18, 2026It was lovely. Unfortunately we only booked in for one night as we were attending a wedding nearby. We should have booked for two nights. Having a private pool and waterfall on one side and a tranquil sitting area on the other was absolutely lovely.

Reviewed Apr 30, 2026The place was very clean,the host is very friendly and attentive.We had a little incident where my partner hurt his feet at night and in the morning I let Monica(The owner) know,she made sure she brings the medication and bandages for us to clean the wound.She went out of her way to make sure that we are okay.The private pool was too beautiful🥰🥰🥰🥰The rooms had everything we needed,it really exceeded our expectations.We had complimentary chocolate, biltong, sherry.We had ice in the fridge, woods to make fire.Everything was perfect.The pictures do not do justice to the place,I would recommend it to anyone who needs to unwind and have some peaceful and quiet time.We would definitely come back I would definitely give the place a 💯 We enjoyed every minute and next time will book for the whole weekend

It's esthetically pleasing, love the attention to detail on deco, well thought of, loved it Monica the host is so accommodating, everyone there including the helpers are friendly and helpful I was celebrating my birthday so Monica welcomed me with a bottle of champagne, some snacks and a birthday message, beautiful gesture thanks again 🥰
My sheets were dirty, and I only saw them very late at night so I couldn't ask for them to be changed😒 please make sure the sheets are changed after every check out, otherwise all is good

The privacy of the two private patios are very well planned, making it feel even more cozy. The inside braai was a win during the winter nights. We will definitely revisit, especially during the summer to use the beautiful pool.

Reviewed May 4, 2025We used this as a stopover but as soon as we arrived we regretted not booking for longer. Absolutely lovely! Beautifully decorated, well equipped, so comfortable. A delightful venue and wonderful to be able to go for a walk in the morning, get pizza from the clubhouse at night, and just relax in the most welcoming space. The kids loved it - as did the parents. Thank you to Monica, our host, for being so accommodating and lovely.
