Reviewed Sep 10, 2026We loved the quaintness of the house. It had more bedrooms than I expected a thatched roof cottage to have. I was grateful for the kitchen as I needed to prepare a couple of meals due to the lack of restaurants in the area.
The wifi was lacking in speed and capacity. We were not able to use the TV at all. The netflix connection needed a user email to log in, all of the other inputs were locked so we couldn't even stream our phones. The use of heat controlls were off putting, even though we didn't need to use it. I can understand protecting your investment, but to do so in spite of damaging what you're trying to protect is silly. The lack of heat is causing mold to grown in your bathroom. If you're so concerned about the cost of heat, build it into the cost to stay there and let your guests be comfortable.

Reviewed Aug 31, 2026The house itself is beautiful, comfortable, and full of charm in a nice area. It's a big house with a cozy peat fire, and nice seating area upstairs. The beds were a lumpy, but laying on top of an unused duvet from another bed helped. The heating was complicated and the coin box for it was a little off-putting, but we made due with the fire and didn't need to pay extra for heating.
The hosts were nice... until they weren't. They were initially friendly and helpful with small things, such as bringing paper towels as there weren't any, and supplying peat for the fire. But that tone changed when we raised a couple of significant issues. The first being that despite the listing boasting outdoor patio furniture, there was not one piece of patio furniture available to us during our stay. When I messaged them they confirmed in the chat that they ordered new furniture that wouldn't arrive until after our stay. This was very disappointing as sitting/dining outside was the main driver of choosing this more expensive property vs a smaller apartment. When I brought it up again later they said I had an "attitude" and denied that there was no patio furniture and claimed that it was there, despite having already admitted there wasn't, the housekeeper confirming there wasn't, and my own two eyes seeing there wasn't.
We also agreed to let them send someone to fix the downstairs toilet that didn't flush. We had told them it's ok we can just use the one upstairs, but they said they were concerned about their "next guests". Because we are nice, we agreed, but the repair person was over 2 hours late, and the hosts didn't respond when we asked for updates. This significantly impacted our dinner plans for our final night, and we were not comfortable leaving a stranger come to the house with all our belongings when we weren't there.
After our stay when we requested a partial refund for the inconvenience, the hosts were rude and refused. We escalated to Booking.com, who reviewed the entire conversation history and told us they feel we deserved a full refund, but the hosts still refused. Instead of advocating for the customer, Booking.com offered me a 25 euro credit, which I declined. Booking.

Reviewed May 15, 2026I'd like to share my experience staying at this house. The location is magnificent, the natural surroundings are simply incredible, and the house looks very beautiful from the outside. Unfortunately, my stay also left several negative aspects. It all started when I arrived and discovered that the trash hadn't been taken out (empty wine bottles were standing near the trash bin, and there was also trash inside the bin from previous tenants). For some reason, there were dirty towels in the shower (in both showers). I also felt that the floors in the rooms weren't clean enough, and the bedding didn't look new (I found hair on the pillows, and two beds weren't made at all). I also saw trash around the house.

Reviewed Jan 30, 2026Very large historical cottage with many good features. Lovely view (when the weather permits). Really comfortable, has nearly all you need (with the exception of an electric clothes dryer). Crispy clean linen and furnishings.
Having to pay extra for additional hours of heating was not really ideal. However, when I messaged the owner and discussed the fact that I'm an early riser, he adjusted the morning heater time to accommodate my needs. Very considerate of him. There was no clothes dryer so I needed to hang all my clothes on an indoor clothes horse for a couple of days due to the constant rain.

We had stayed in this lovely cottage some years ago with our whole family during the summer, so were pleased to come back in winter. The house is cosy and clean with plenty of space upstairs and down. We love the location, an easy walk to the local pub and a short drive to other nearby towns - we'd recommend Carrickfin Beach, Crolly's Distillery and Leo's pub for traditional music. We had a problem when entering the property and the owner answered quickly when we called and arranged for us to have a free drink at the pub while the matter was resolved - no complaints about that!

Reviewed Nov 25, 2025It was only two of us, but this easily caters a family or a group of friends as it's spacious. The view from the Cottage upstairs is amazing looking at the lake. There is a Circle K opposite that has a shop that can provide basic fridge and freezer needs with a cafe next to it. Would recommend Leo's Tavern for dinner. The other local restaurant which is only a few minutes is only open some evenings a week so check in advance.
Would come back again with a group.
The house is easily signposted from the main road with an L road sign.
Access was easy into the house with space for a few cars. To get the keypad working just press your palm onto the black reader and that will present the numbers to then input for door entry. Easy peasy.
To turn on the heating and hot water during the scheduled times it's also very easy to use.
It costs €2 per hour to have hot water and heating using a meter. The meter only takes coins. It needs to take wireless payment or be done away with. Apart from that, no issues and a pleasant stay for climbing Mt Errigal. Didn't get round to telling the host, but a few lamp lightbulbs need replacing.

Nowhere on Booking.com did it mention heat and hot water were only free for a couple of hours in morning and then in the evening. We didn’t learn this until AFTER we booked and not until we were on our way to Ireland. Upon arriving, despite following owners instructions, via e-mail, neither heat no hot water worked. There was a pay fox on the wall where you had to pay by the hour if you wanted heat or hot water after the time allocated which required having coins to put in the box. Called owner and he basically said he was sorry but couldn’t get someone out to fix problem that night but did offer a suggestion of how we may fix it ourselves by removing boiler cover outside, etc. This is not something I wanted to do on my vacation but attempted it and that did not work either. We were assured showers were on separate system and hot water would be available in morning. Tried to warm up place with starting a fire in fireplace with provided peat moss but it was damp and would not light. No one called or showed up in morning to fix problem. No hot water in shower in the morning either. Called owner and left message that still not any hot water anywhere and asked them to call back. Never got cal back. Was going to ask for refund when we returned home but see they never billed us which was appropriate given the horrible stay we had there. If everything was working, would have been a nice stay as place was cute cottage.

Nice location, lovely garden, quite spacious and decent facilities in the kitchen.
It was quite dusty throughout, lots of cobwebs and mould around some of the window frames. We didn’t even use the showers as they were a bit old/grubby. I understand it’s an old-style cottage with a rustic feel to it but this felt more like it needed a deeper clean and in some places a bit of work. The downstairs living room was also ver dark, it looks much brighter and more spacious in the photos than it really is.

The site is in a lovely area and has the potential to be a great holiday home. The owners genuinely seem interested in providing a good experience for their guests. When issues were raised the owners attempted to resolve them. The hosts went out of their way to honour a request we had for some Christmas decorations and a Christmas tree as we were staying over Christmas and New Years.
When choosing a holiday home I look for sites that provide me with a home away from home. Unfortunately, this holiday home fell short in several critical and minor areas. I was left with the distinct impression that the hosts did not have a firm grasp on the component elements of a great holiday home.
For our family, we look for a warm and comfortable communal area that has space for everyone to be together on holiday. The infrastructure needs to work in a way that it is invisible to the occupant and we want to be assured of a holiday home that focuses on providing an environment where we can rest and recharge. Holidays are not a common thing for us and we need to make the most of the opportunity to rest and recharge. We are not a party family at all, we much prefer time together sharing movies, books, chats, meals and just recharging.
With this in mind, there were several jarring points in the home. The heating process is painfully manual, frustratingas it continuously needs to be activated and simply not fit for purpose. The need to continuously feed the meter (even during the "free" periods), waking up to a cold house and having to manually manage something that should be, and generally is, automated, is very frustrating. The advertised wifi is not broadband, it is in fact a "3" 4G router. This solution is flaky at best, is not fit for purpose and is subject to a fair usage policy (,200,Gigs) . The wifi is woefully inadequate for a 6-member family of mostly teens and young adults whose entertainment is based on effective Internet access, never mind the 8 people it proports to serve. The fridge is woefully undersized for the size of the holiday home presented. We had planned to be in occupation over both Christmas and New Years, and finding space for all the refrigerator needs of a Christmas dinner while still having enough room for further days was impossible. It resulted in a multitude of unnecessary trips to town for refrigerated supplies.
Cute cottage. Sitting room with an open fire was delightful.
Although easy to do, you did have to manually operate the heating and hot water even during the free period. That said, it was easy and the house heated up very quickly.
