Tony is the host with the most! He has created a home chock-full of the beautiful, the curious, the quirky and the charming and it all comes together to make a comfortable and characterful accommodation. Dinner in front of the fire was very enjoyable and breakfast - chef’s choice, and you won’t be disappointed - was outstanding. The bed was so comfortable - we appreciated the down blankets and crisp linens. The stylish ensuite bathroom was great. Tony tuned in to check our preference for peace and privacy or company.
We loved our stay but if you’re into white walls and minimalist decor, we suggest you go elsewhere. This is a characterful home, not a hotel.
We had nice conversations with Tony.
An amazing beautifully restored 1880’s house - in centre of small village, very peaceful, great breakfast, a very kind friendly host, comfortable bed
All good
Fantastic hospitable host. Superb breakfast bacon eggs, hash browns & Spinach with nasturtiums and Honeysuckle flowers. Authentic old world feel with so many interesting features
No tea or coffee in the room.
The owner was very friendly and making great breakfast!
Tony the host has led a very interesting and colourful life. He's good company and does everything he can to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.
Not Tony's fault but they have the road up at the moment, so there's a lot of dust and it's much noiseier than normal. It should soon be finished and back to normal
Very homelike and friendly. Breakfast was delicious and we enjoyed our visit with Tony.
Prima kamer.
The host, Tony, was kind & extremely good company. The lodge is a beautiful historic home, very well put together. Breakfast was perfection.
Nothing : I would rate it 12/10 if at all possible!!
Tony was a phenomenal host and accommodated us as if we were his longtime friends! He found a perfect spot to park our giant RV and allowed us to use his laundry facilities. The breakfast he cooked us was phenomenal!
Tony, the host, is a cool guy. Interesting stories.
Very eclectic - Tony is quite the collector!

Tony is a beautiful soul and lovely caretaker. We were delighted by the decor, and astounded at the delicious breakfast. What a lovely way to experience New Zealand!
Tony was the most interesting man and couldn't do enough for us.we felt as if we were visiting a friend. We had the best time. Thank you
Quaint and quirky

The property and the staff had an enormous amount of unique character.

The rooms were nicely warm and a blazing fire in the living room. The breakfast was especially good,
Pheasant Lodge was all Tony. Tony is the owner, and he is a great character. He is warm, funny and a great storyteller. We brought wine and a dip with us, but he insisted on putting a full platter together for us and we didn't even use our dip. Tony offers a 2-course meal at night for a reasonable coar ( he needs notice of course) and when I told him over email that I don't eat steak, he drove all the way to Auckland to get me fish. He sat and ate dinner with us and entertained us with his life stories. He renovated the house and decorated it with antiques. If you want a place to stay within a few hours of Auckland, this is the place to stay, it is a great experience, and I would totally recommend it.
Breakfast Very yummy, great location

Really authentic, historical building. Nicely renovated with care to details. The Lodge-Keeper is super nice, welcoming. Feels like home.
Tony was the perfect host….full of lively conversation & fascinating stories ….a real character The property is clean, quiet, comfortable & lovingly furnished Breakfast was cooked & delicious Would definitely stay here again Would highly recommend
Breakfast was served and it was a joy watching Tony garnish the dish with fresh flowers and herbs from his garden, the flavours of each food item in the dish were crafted to perfection, cheers Tony, we will be back, Andre and Marelize.
The Lodge is a beautiful trip back to a Victorian era style of vintage, and decorated with a range of memorabilia. It adds a lot of character.
A little bit noisy - although that really comes down to it being a heritage type building.
Lovely place to stay, with Tony as a great host.
Accommodation is short in Paparoa but this was definitely a very pleasant experience and the added bonus was the most beautifully presented breakfast was included in the price. Tony was a great host and this is a great alternative to motels or cabins.
Meeting Tony and sharing life's experiences, a well travelled interesting human being. Who can cook interesting meals . We will return
Most comfortable bed ever and a truly gorgeous scenery. Delicious homemade breakfast and a great story behind the ownership.
Tony the host is absolutely amazing! He catered to each person for breakfast and is super nice, always happy to help with anything needed! 100% will stay here again. Thanks Tony 😁

Our host, Tony, was charming, engaging and hugely entertaining. He insisted that we treat his home as our home. He had a great sense of humour and put us at our ease. We genuinely enjoyed his company and really appreciate his approach to hosting.
Everything! Tony has made his home a labour of love from the house itself to its antique eclectic furnishing and decor. Every object has a story and Tony is an enchanting and amusing raconteur. Very comfortable bed, full English breakfast was beautifully cooked and Tony couldn’t do enough for us or his other guests. We’d recommend Pheasant Lodge as a perfect stay between Auckland and the North when travelling up country.
We liked it all.
Tony was very accomadating
Booking. Com having such a useless website, I used their site in an attempt to communicate with the provider, and he never recieved the message. Major embarassoment for me when he called me to ask why we hadnt arrived. If you are reading this, I suggest you communicate directly with the provider and not use booking. Com
Tony was a true professional and very focused on his customer service. He was also a very funny and interesting person with great stories.
A fantastic find & a great location…old lodge beautifully restored & if you love quirky - then add this stop over to your list! Tony is a fantastic host & raconteur - we would have stayed longer if we could have ..
Our host was fantastic and the breakfast was exceptional. We liked the interesting decor and the en suite in our room was top notch.
We wouldn't have changed anything.
Tony is a great host. He is knowledgable on the area and life in general, and loves to have a drink with you if that's your thing. Comfy bed and great ensuite.

Tony is a most personable and attentive host. House has been beautifully restored and offers travellers a unique experience.
It has been beautifully renovated and having our own ensuite was great
Friendly and informative host, excellent breakfast.
Quirky and fun location with losers of antiques and very English wall paper. Good breakfast.
Kitchen could have been cleaner.
Tony was a terrific host. His home is absolutely stunning.... the wallpapers wow... and we felt very comfortable and well looked after. The home cooked breakfast was spot on and it was nice sitting around the table eating together. Tony willingly helped us out with local information. Thoroughly recommend Pheasant Lodge and hope to go back some day.
Was great to get off the beaten track and discover this amazing place to stay. Tony is a fantastic host and has fully renovated this mid 1800 home of the local saw miller owner. His attention to detail is incredible with the decor and antique items representing the original era. Each room is the private bathroom. The linen and towels were of quality. The breakfast served in the formal dining room with candles. Was delicious and set you up for the day. Definitely a great stop between Auckland and the entrance/exit to the north.
Brilliant litte B&B. Great edvice for seeing the local museum or going for walks. Part of the experience staying with all these antiques in a house built in 1886. Great dinner (pre-ordered) was had with the host & breakfast was just as good. Dinning at 1850's table & chairs! Normally it is hard to say, but everything consdered - THEY EXCELLED HERE
Tony is a delightful host and a skilled cook. What a beautifully restored and cared for house, replete with character. Very comfortable bed and great shower. We had a lovely stay.

Home away from home!
Exceptional breakfast with fresh ingredients from the garden. Felt immediately welcome and at home thanks to the hosting couple. They have created a unique space filled with historic objects that all have a story to be told. I will never forget my stay, it's written into my heart.
A wonderful old house, lovingly restored by the very welcoming hosts. Fun conversations, a delicious home-cooked dinner and a sumptuous cooked breakfast. A very comfortable room and a well-appointed bathroom.
Felt welcome and like it was my home
The lovely couple put on drinks and a bbq which was super thoughtful for us. We were treated very nicely and it was really sweet.

Where do I start? Firstly, the hosts, Maggie and Tony, are the loveliest, most caring and helpful people you are ever likely to meet and welcome you into their home like family or long lost friends. We had an issue with lost luggage and Maggie and Tony stepped in with efforts to locate the baggage and secure it's return, whilst also washing and lending us clothing and assisting us to purchase necessary items. Nothing was too much trouble. The property itself is a beautifully restored heritage home with a wealth of original features and furnished to an impressive standard with traditional/antique furniture and fascinating curios. Spotlessly clean throughout with impeccable décor of exquisite taste. Luxurious bathrooms with beautiful fixtures and fittings and sumptuous towels. Set in a beautiful backdrop of mature gardens yet conveniently located in a charming village. The freshly cooked to order breakfast is absolutely delicious using fresh, local produce and garnished and seasoned with herbs and flowers from the colourful and fragrant garden - a feast for the senses. We also enjoyed evening meals al fresco again delicious, local ingredients all home cooked from scratch, and all with a generous helping of Tony's wonderful anecdotes and fascinating stories! We were even included in a Birthday soiree being held for a neighbour! Maggie and Tony have extensive local knowledge and were able to advise and support with our plans to gain the most from our stay with them, we only wish we could have stayed longer. We have wonderful memories to last a lifetime, and would thoroughly recommend this hidden gem to anyone wishing to experience unmatchable, genuine hospitality and an immersive yet relaxing experience.

Everything, from a warm welcome, a beautifully restored house with original furniture & decorations, the lovely, modern bathroom, a fantastic breakfast! And Tony (sadly Maggie was out of town) was such a great host!
Nothing!
A very cosy place with an amazing interieur. Tony and Maggie are very experienced hosts. Thank you for the kind hospitality. They prepared us a delicious warm breakfast including fruits and cereals.
Tony and Maggie are excellent hosts and made us feel most welcome. The breakfast was excellent.
Local facilities, particularly the options for an evening meal, were limited.
Tony is absolutely amazing! The house is filled with wonderfully interesting antiques, the outside entertaining area is inviting, and everything is relaxing and comfortable. We had a wonderful dinner and breakfast, with herbs and veggies straight from the garden. We would definitely stay again!
Not a single thing!
Everything was wonderful. Breakfast was particularly nice. Tony and Maggie were very nice hosts.
Pheasant Lodge is very charming, beautiful and comfortable. The hosts, Tony and Maggie, where brilliant. From arrival, to leaving, the care shown was exceptional.
Breakfast was lovely and so were our hosts a most enjoyable but too brief a stay
