The hosts, the animals , Bob , The silence , the stars, The house… all perfect!
Peace and quiet. Remoteness. Freedom to do what you want. Hearty.
Can use some hot water in the kitchen. But not a huge problem.
Most amazing hosts, incredibly kind and hospitable. One of the most beautiful places to stay!
From the very warm welcome of our hosts, Juanie and Len, to the broad smiles of Willem and his son, the affection of Bobbi the cat, friendly Sam the dog and the braying hello from Durban and Beaufort the donkeys, we just knew it would be a special 2 days! And let's not forget the chickens... If you want to experience the real Karoo deal, with wide open expanses of land and sky, walks for miles, infinite stars that shimmer on the horizon, above and all around, old style farmhouse living and hospitality, then Oupoort will not disappoint. The home is large, spacious, clean and reminiscent of days gone by. You will find everything you need and even discover some things you didn't know you needed! Go ahead, book, stay awhile. You won't be sorry.
That we only stayed for two nights....
Its quite isolated, which can be a refreshing change The house felt warm and welcoming
It was difficult at times due to the fact that there aren’t many plugs, and it could get really hot at night when trying to sleep
The owners were very friendly and positive, especially liked the dogs and the cat
Nothing
Perfect setup for our adventure bike trip needs. Quiet and relaxed atmosphere. Hosts very pleasant and also provided excellent meal and other provisions as per our request. Thanks
Summer it is hot in this location so be prepared for the heat and some mosquitoes. Providing items to assist with this would be beneficial.
Everything was wonderful! The hosts went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. They were very friendly and helped us with a flat tire. Thank you so much for everything! We hope to visit again someday.
Off grid, very peaceful, friendly animals shower over bath a little intimidating
All good
We loved watching the springboks coming for food, swimming in the pure fountain water of the farm dam and gazing at the incomparable night sky.
Nothing not to like
Comfortable spacious home
The peace and quietness. The vibe, the sunsets and the jogs and cycling in the mornings, plenty of space for that
Loved it all
Wonderful skies, brilliant hosts. Off the grid with space to unwind. Great wildlife. Len was so helpful with a damaged tyre. Just what we needed!
Thank you so much for such an amazing stay with you we loved it so much and we look forward to staying with you again next year.
The place was beautiful. Rustic and off grid giving the kids time to enjoy the little comforts of life. Our host was the most pleasant and welcoming people and took such good care of us. They kept us fed and safe and helped us out in our time of need. God sent and a true blessing. We were so grateful and happy that we found that place.
Incredible experience, loved every moment. A special place indeed :) Thank you Len and Juanie!
Everything
Nothing
We love a place that is off the beaten track, off-grid, and quiet; this ticked all of our boxes when it comes to accommodation for a getaway trip.
Nothing.
Very friendly and helpful host! House had everything you'd need in a beautiful remote location.
If you're driving a polo vivo you need to take the dirt road slow! It's a bit bumpy.
Everything! Rustic farmhouse. Peace. Quiet. Stars and more stars. Walks in the veld. Beautiful flowers. The visiting pets. Len and Juanie are awesome hosts. Can recommend Len's homemade warm, fresh farm bread 🍞 Yum! If you want to do stuff, there's lots to do. Perfect for cyclists. Donkey cart rides for kids. Dam to swim in (in summer!) Play Pool. Take a drive to Tankwa National Park. (A very interesting book on the history of Tankwa is available to read) An hour's drive to Sutherland. If, like us, you want to do nothing but read a book quietly, listen to and watch the birds, have a braai, gaze in awe at the stars, it's the best place to be...
Nothing. It is out of the way, but that was what we wanted and the beauty of it!
As close as you can get to the authentic Karoo lifestyle. You go here to experience the farmhouse you wish your grandparents had. The stars we saw on our night there was once in a lifetime. Way better night sky stargazing as in town Sutherland. Pool table for cherry on top. This is the kind of place you and your loved ones will remember forever.
Remember you are far from town so take more than you need and an extra portable power pack. No wall sockets (usb charger on travel fridge with a big battery and charge controller) but that's what you need if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. 2 small travel fridges, one has a small freezer (4 to 5 packs ice) compartment, it did the job for us (six people, one child) but might not for you.
Len and his wife were warm, friendly and welcoming - not forgetting their beautify cat, Bob! Len went out of his way to help me solve a problem: After a long drive, arriving in the evening - we unfortunately locked our car keys in the boot! The next morning we solved the problem, with the help of Len and his workman. Super grateful!
Beautiful farm stay with very friendly hosts.
A great family friendly place where kids can rediscover independence. The hosts went out of their way to make it memorable. Kids fetched fresh eggs, fed the donkeys and sheep and experienced farm life. Close enough (1 hour) to Sutherland to visit the South African Large Telescope or stop over on the way to Tankwa. The property had a lot of warmwater bottles, some toys for the kids and solar for power.
If you are looking for off the grid stay this is certainly the place to be. Prepare well and bring all goodies with you as shops are far away about 50km. Donkeys were charming, cat and dog friendly, saw a few buck as well. We unfortunately did not have any snow or stars due cloudy/rainy weather. House is spacious, beds comfortable - bring extra blankets as it gets cold. Enjoyed the stay.
Pool table. Indoor braai & fireplace. Quiet. Good for stargazing & lovely friendly pets. Toiletries. Len’s delicious baked bread.
Only cold water tap in the kitchen.
We had a fantastic stay at Oupoort. Our hosts were incredibly warm , kind and attentive. They really made us feel at home and taught us so much about the history of area. The farmhouse is comfortable , very neat and spacious with a great fire place. It has everything you need. We made lots of unforgettable memories and friends during this stay - including the resident porcupine. Exploring the entire farm on bikes guided by Len was definitely a big highlight. The stars are amazing to look at from Oupoort - I think better than the view from Sutherland town which may have more light pollution. Thank you Len and Juanie for your incredible kindness and care. We do hope to visit again.
Wanted to get away from all the stresses of the city life, this beautiful slice of heaven was the perfect get away, almost completely off the grid so you get the chance to spend quality time with the family. Star gazing is also an incredible experience at night here. Just step outside and be blown away by the beauty of the Milky Way. The hosts went above and beyond as well. I’ve never met such a more friendly couple in my life. You can see they take pride in all aspects of what they do. They were super accommodating and I will definitely be recommending this place to all. 10/10 loved every aspect of it.
Nothing to dislike. Simply the best.
If you are looking for warm hospitality and an authentic stay in a farm house, then this is the perfect accommodation. Our boys got to experience driving a tractor, pellet gun shooting and seeing a porcupine in the evening. Memories are made from these experiences.
Len and Juanie were great hosts. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Showed us around their off grid eco farm and made us feel totally at home.
As long as you understand it is off grid living there is nothing to dislike.
Location was beautiful. House very well maintained with all required utilities. Eco friendly!!!
A bit far from Sutherland with dirt roads
this is one of those places that will never leave you, nor would you want to ever leave it. I will definitely make sure to be there again!
Thanks Len for your exceptional hospitality and assisting us with our tire
Excellent location to experience nature at its best.
Nothing
The peace and quiet, just what we wanted. Our hosts where awesome, the chops were delicious, and it was great to meet porky the porcupine ...
Nothing
We enjoyed the clean, calm, quiet environment, the eco farm had everything we needed and Len and Juanie were fabulous hosts, ensuring our comfort, providing info, hints and tips about the area, introducing us to Porky the porcupine. The night sky was amazing watching the satellites moving across the sky, really something to behold.
There was nothing to dislike, it was a lovely stay.
Very friendly owners and the kids loved the farm the host took them around the farm and enjoyed their ride with the motorbikes.
The hosts really go the extra mile to provide an authentic Karoo experience! They're also incredibly kind-hearted people. As an animal lover, my favourite part of our stay was interacting with the donkeys, horses, cats, dogs, and chickens that amicably roam sections of the farm. The (DELICIOUS) homemade skilpadjies and plaasbrood were also a highlight!
The accommodation was peaceful and quiet. The staff were amazing and very accommodating to me. They cooked the most amazing meals!
The peace and freedom of being out in nature without a care in the world. The starry sky at night, milky way clear as day. The sunrise and sunsets were out of this world. The children had the freedom to explore, play, and learn from the environment. The farm animals are friendly, and the owners are the most amazing people, so kind and accommodating. We will definitely be back.
Realizing it was time to leave, packing up and saying goodbye to the farm. There wasn't anything about the property or the owners that I could have a negative comment on. The trip was perfect. The gravel road from sutherland was a bit unexpected, but if you're prepared for a few bumps, you'll be good to go. If anything happens, on the way, the owners will happily come find you and get you safely to the property.
Beautiful, remote setting in the Karoo. Vert good value for money.
The hospitality and williness of staff to meet all our needs.they really go the extra mile
The owners were so welcoming and went out of their way to accommodate us last minute. Friendly and kind they brought us wood and checked in on us multiple times. They have various adorable animals on their property and interacting with them made my daughter’s day. We came with three of our dogs and they all loved the secure area where they could explore and play with the resident dog. The beds are warm and comfortable and a roaring fire each night was awesome to relax with. We will definitely come again.
There isn’t much to not like. It was great
Isolated and good for stargazing Very friendly hosts who will go out of their way to make your stay comfortable Accommodation clean and comfortable Pool table was a highlight for the kids Lamb curry delicious Stunning views and scenary Awesome sunset and sunrises
Would be great if firewood or heaters costs, were included in winter months.
Super welcoming, awesome food and the hosts are very proactive and willing to help
Words would not do the listing justice. The absolute tranquillity and beautiful nature are unbeatable. Add to it the spacious house and friendly hosts and you have a blast of a time. All you need is there and more!
We should have budgeted more time. Once there we didn't want to leave. We also completely overpacked as the listing is self-sufficient. I forgot the telescope as the night is amazing for viewing stars.
The breakfast as well as the lamb chops were incredible. We were treated to a night game drive as well as meeting the pet donkeys' and swimming in the dam. They were happy to provide extra lamb chops late at night as we could not get enough. THanks again
Far away from the hustle and bustle, well off the beaten track. Peaceful and quiet. Karoo at its best. The hosts were excellent. Saw to our needs without being intrusive. Provided amazing dinner and breakfast.
Should have stayed longer!
Beautiful location in the Karoo with views of the valley and mountains. Our hosts were warm and welcoming, and were very helpful about directions to the farm and always replied quickly to any enquiries I had. The area has very interesting succulent plant growth and geology, with the most amazing stars we have ever seen. The house is a very lovely farm house and has very comfy beds, with the vintage style creating a very cosy atmosphere. A swim in the farm dam was a pleasant bonus for the hot afternoons (both for us and our two dogs). Thanks for the great stay, we are looking forward to visiting again!
Super friendly and helpful staff, dinner and breakfast were really good! Recommended place to stay!
The hosts were super friendly and really made our stay enjoyable. House big with the real farm feeling. Beautiful spot.
The road between the farm and Sutherland is a really bad dirt road.
The farm is isolated, exactly what one needs to get out of the city and spend some quality time with family. The host made a real effort to make our stay memorable, We are very likely to go back.
The road from Sutherland is a complete nightmare. Rather approach the farm from Calvinia.
Excellent farm stay in the Karoo in an old farm house with an indoor braai and eco-friendly LED lights and fridges. Very comfortable and relaxing to get away for some peace and quiet and clear skies and bright stars.
Oupoort Eco is the ideal place to relax and relieve yourself from all daily stress. The location to be when you're looking for digital detox, as well as going back to the past. For those worrying about the feedback, there is an open air office area where there is Wi-Fi. And there is also light from solar panels. The hosts are very friendly and willing to assist you in either way, from scenic drives over the farm area, night drives to try to find porcupine and aardvark (no guarantee, it's real wildlife), or some of their delicious karoo lamb chops or fresh eggs. Would definitely advise the location when you're looking for an outback adventure.
When you're going to stay for a longer period, you might get problems with your electronic devices, as there is no 220V available. But when you're prepared and aware what Eco stands for, you should be fine.
Location was great for a farm experiance. The hosts were super friendly, and the bread was great treat.
A truly unique farm stay - and is really off the grid. The hosts were super friendly and even baked us a loaf of farm bread - Just remember to ask for it and the Jam too The stars come out to shine and you also have a San guide for a night trip around the farm to discover the Karoo at night
Nothing to report
Everything, huge house, even a perfect POOL Table.
Nothing. All I can add is what you bring to the party, take home with you, I.e. take your own garbage away. Thank you
What an amazing gem this is. Large house with huge rooms. Ideal place to sit back and unwind. Will definitely go back soon.
Location is stunning. Slap bang in the Karoo about 20km from Middelpos and 60km from Sutherland. Met by charming and most helpful hosts Len and Juanie who live in adjacent house. Welcome cold beers on arrival after arduous journey. Comfortable beds. Superb cooked breakfast the next morning. Ticked all the boxes for two tired bikers. Will definitely revisit.
