Beautiful location
We’d anticipated that the Otira Hotel would be open
It was so remote. The mountains loomed large, making the fire was awesome and the cottage was utterly cosy. It had everything we needed.
Convenient location - perfect stop off on drive to Franz Josef. Close to Arthur’s pass village and walks. Place was clean and had the amenities we needed for a night. Self check in was straightforward. Electric heater and mattress heaters were nice to have
It was a little cramped with 3 people and luggage but we didn’t mind too much for a night
The facilities were great, plenty of hot water, pot belly heating, very, very good\, plenty of firewood and pine cones. Great location, easy to find. Hotel just down the road...(great whitebait fritters)!! Would highly recommend these Huts. The 3 of us are in our 70s and really enjoyed our stay.
Wanted to stay longer but couldn't.
Adorable, has everything you need
Alles war gut. Alles sauber. Uns haben Zug und Straße überhaupt nicht beeinträchtigt. Herrlicher Sternenhimmel zu beobachten. Holz Ofen war sehr gemütlich. Jederzeit wieder.
Man könnte vielleicht Müllbeutel bereit legen. Das wär hilfreich.
Diese Unterkunft ist eine alte urige Eisenbahnerhütte, die nicht viel Komfort bietet. Aber das steht alles in der Beschreibung, und daher war ich ganz zufrieden mit der Hütte. Genau was ich mir vorgestellt hatte.
Having the fire was great.Really contributed to the atmosphere.
Nothing.
Very basic & trains running past it during the night.
Super netter Gastgeber und tolle Lage für Wanderungen im St. Arthurs Pass Nationalpark ☺️
Location
A few little things could be improved, blind on bathroom window would be a start, the single bed had the worst (soft) mattress.
Location was good. Host was already there, still cleaning as we were early. Very obliging. Fire was lit by him as it was very cold.
Too small, no room to put bags, no room in kitchen, crockery is too old. Bathroom is at the far end from the kitchen and was icy cold.
מיקום
ישן. תחזוקה לקויה. מבודד
A good experience in the wild. Even it's a small unit, it kept the heat intact. The unit is quite well equipped. (Anything like this is better than camping in the cold)
The bed was a bit too soft. I guess the price in the national park is on the high side!
Beautiful location in a majestic mountain valley. Cute little hut along with a few other huts at this location. Felt very private and secluded though! The pot belly fire was great - hubby enjoyed making the fire and it kept the hut very warm. Kitchen facilities were basic but definitely did the job! Air fryer a bonus. Beds were comfortable and there were plenty of warm blankets etc along with electric blankets. Although it is a remote location, the directions from Gary were very thorough and we found the place no problem. Lots of wonderful walks in the area.
Sweet location near Arthur Pass hikes. Throughly enjoyed the solitude, wooden stove and hanging out on and outside the cabin.
It was as described, a bit better even. No surprises.
Quite a good experience. Rather well equipped albeit a little ‘oldish’ but sufficient and cosy. Noisy level is acceptable and location is good.
The location inside Arthur's Pass, atypical place, communication
Problem with water this evening, the owner warned us. No shower head. Unconfortable matresses.
A lovely cosy cabin in a beautiful location, exactly as described and the perfect base for exploring Arthur’s Pass.
I really enjoyed the cosy cabin, it was fun and different. I loved the wood stove and the well equiped kitchen. In the cosy cabin there are just three single beds so just keep that in mind. Also be aware you are near the road and the railway line, but there are not many cars or trains, so I had no problem with that at all. It has a great view down the valley.
Location and being in the National Park. Wasn’t cold enough to put on the fire but would have added to the ambiance of this quaint basic cabin.
The property was exactly as we expected but would have loved some comfy chair/s to sit on outside but we made do 👍
Nice place to stay, granny's house vibes with cozy room, nature around and vintage chimney. Unexpectedly well-equipped kitchen allows to cook everything, beds are comfortable, shower with a hot water, everything you need for an escape from the city. National park around and plenty of birds and trees is a nice bonus. The host responses very fast and provide extended instructions for self check-in and living there.
Bring repellent, sandflies in summer may be rather annoying. Also it may be noise from trains for those who are light sleepers (we were absolute ok with it, doesn't disturb much, but adding the mood of travelling)
Unpretentious and exactly as advertised. Would recommend to any who just want basics and no frills. Excellent communication from hosts.
We hate lock boxes. They are almost always unfamiliar and difficult to deal with. However in this location I understand they are the only option. I was expecting trains! None went by, was looking forward to them!
Perfect location for the national park, the fire was lovely on a cold day. Cooking facilities were perfect. Gary was really helpful and let us check in early, which was great.
The colour was very jolly! I love yellow- it makes me smile 😁 I also loved where it was with incredible mountains & views all around! Loved the fire as it made the cabin really cosy( & I normally feel the cold!!)

Simple, comfortable, eclectic, cosy. Great location.
Couldn’t stay longer.
Great place to stay in the mountains! Simple but super cozy. Comes with a wood-chopping opportunity and some old vinyls, we had a good time!
Exactly as described, very basic. Had everything one needed. The 45s and record player were an added bonus.
Location, the cosy hut, the owner replied right away to our queries, comfy beds with the electric blanket, well equipped kitchen, beautiful garden.
That we didn't stay longer to explore more the area
Affordable, good location, close to nature, beds and toilets were clean. The fireplace and chopping firewood was an interesting experience.
Kitchen equipment/utensils could use some refreshing. No kitchen towel available to handle hot oven tray. Toilet was too cold to comfortably use in early November, even with hot water.
A very basic old hut, has been tidied up and painted, has everything you need- microwave, air fryer, stove, kitchen utensils, table, chairs. It has the best pot belly wood stove and this makes the cabin very warm and cosy. And also great for cooking on. It was very comfortable. When compared to the price of other cabins it is expensive, but represents reasonable value for accommodation at Arthurs Pass, as accommodation in this area is also very expensive
The single bed had 3 heavy cotton quilts, too heavy to sleep under. A duvet would be more comfortable
The fireplace is cozy. There are some nice walks nearby. Very good insulation.
The shower is too low on the wall. There is no place to put the soap and shampoo in the shower box.
Remote location, amenities
the tranquility, the peacefulness, and then the trains, lots of them. loved the location. we have looked at these air b&bs every time we drive past. Otira has a lot of interesting places to visit
the table wasn't big enough for 3 sewing machines!!!!!!!.
The location was great was a shame it was raining but you can’t do anything about the weather
Excellent clean, cosy and well equipped hut with a great fire to keep you warm. We love the rustic experience in the middle of the beautiful scenic Southern Alps. Perfect stop over for us. And, Gary was incredibly helpful (via phone) helping us out with a vehicle issue we had. A+++
Nothing
The relative isolation, being amidst the beautiful vertical mountains that held you in their palms. The woodburner that warmed your bones with the aroma of dry popping pine cones. Early in the morning there was a deep silence and the silhouette of the mountains remained saturated in cloud. The cabin which was exactly as advertised, everything you need though a necessary secondary to the real purpose of the place: To be seduced and liberated for a time by nature. Our family loved the experience and will be back.
In all honestly the hut was everything we needed, so we have no complaints. It was warm, well equipped and there was plenty of firewood and an axe for kindling.
So cute and cosy!!
Front gate lock a little tricky 😀
Is warm house, host given me a lot woods/ pine corn for burning. Bedsheet is clean and comfortable for sleeping. Natural Environment . I will come back next time. Thank you Gary for explaining all the instructions.
Gary sent lots of instructions on how to get there, what to expect and was great at communicating. The cabin got lovely and warm once the fire was on, bed was comfy and shower was hot!
Was nice to just relax and be cosy by the fire. The fire warmed the place up extremely well. Great bird life and seeing the train go past on occasion added to the experience. Me and my partner thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would do it again. Another thing I must mention is that I brought my dog with me. Finding good pet friendly accommodation isn't too easy
Awesome options of keeping warm, plenty of blankets, sleeping bags and a fireplace with plenty of firewood and pinecones. It was clean and there was also plenty of ways to cook dinner, microwave, oven, and airfryer and toaster! Instructions on getting there and what to expect were very detailed
Traffic can be noisy, but its awesome location and closeness to arthurs pass and the general walking tracks and other mountain activities help offset this. (Recommend light sleepers wear earplugs)
What a peaceful stay in this cozy cabin surrounded by nature, river sounds, morning birds chirping and amazing night sky. The highlight was the fireplace with wood provided which was so relaxing. Very clear instructions so it was easy to find it even when it was dark. Gary is super friendly, proactive and made sure we understood how to get there.
Great host, well equipped (but basic) cabin, lovely new fireplace. Not a luxury stay, but exactly as described, and a great place to get away from modern life for a while (but it does have WiFi, a microwave , a hot shower and modern conveniences!)
Nothing really.
Loved the small fire place
Very cosy and lovely setting

Nice and simple perfect for a stop over. Quiet and feels like your disconnected
Nothing really was just as it was explained.
Really well located, cute hut. Had helpful amenities which we weren’t expecting! Hosts were lovely and helpful!
Everything. Great warm accommodation with a fireplace which was fantastic. Great little kitchen. Family had a wonderful time.
A great stay in a great location! We were thankful to have our own cabin to stay in the Otira/Arthur’s Pass area. Gary and Dawn were very helpful and took extra time to ensure that we were aware of what to expect from the cabin, what to make sure to bring, and that we were able to check in without issue. They were proactive and made extra effort to ensure a comfortable stay. They were also very quick to respond to any inquiries ahead of and throughout our stay. Check in and check out were super easy, and Gary and Dawn provided clear instructions and followed up so there was no doubt about getting in and out without issue. On chilly evenings, it felt like a luxury to be able to light a fire in the fireplace. There is also a heater if you need it, but the cabin is well-insulated enough that the cosy hut stayed warm enough through the night long after the fire went out. The kitchen is equipped with the appliances and accessories for preparing meals in the cabin. The cabin is spacious, has a full bathroom inside, and towels and linens are included. We were also surprised at how strong and fast the wifi connection is. Located in the beautiful mountain area, you can view the mountains from the cabin and on a clear night, the stars pop in the sky because it is far from light pollution. An all-around great deal for the area and a great home-base while exploring Otira and Arthur’s pass!
There was a wood stove with free wood. Very comfy.
Large and well-kept section around the hut. Great space for the dog to run around, well fenced. Also very private and tranquil space bar the occasional train. Hut itself is undersold, lovely warm functional space. We very much enjoyed our stay and would stay again.
The occasional train.
Very decent accommodations for the price point. A nostalgic “ throwback” from years ago! Excellent communication from our host!
The occasional train noise
Super cosy. As described.
Nothing.
Very commendable that the owner is so upfront about it being a basic cabin. If you are going to complain about it not meeting your expectations, then you haven't read the booking info properly
Shower water wasn't hot but apparently we should have turned the heater switch on. Owner says he will mark switch for future renters.
It was basic but comfy exactly what I needed
Nothing I didn't like. I will go back again
Lovely electric blankets on the beds. Lots of dry wood to light a fire. Left very clean by the prior guests. We stayed in the hut with ensuite bathroom and it was well worth paying extra verses the hut with an outside bathroom.
Fabulous little rustic hut.
Nothing. Everything was as described.
Wood fire, very comfortable beds, quirky rustic hut.
Next to train line but if you want to stay in this area thats just part of it :)
