Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Myself and my partner loved our stay at this resort. It is set in beautiful surroundings and the rooms/villas are delightful, so pretty and secluded. The staff are amazing, have great positive energy. The food quality is a little varied between the restaurants but it is completely fine, and with the size of the buffet in the main restaurant, such scope means not everything will be amazing. The marine center is an amazing part of the hotel, we partook in a coral snorkel trip and also went to the marine conservation talk and were able to see a turtle that was being rehabilitated. We also i believe were there in low season (Sept) and so the resort was fairly quiet and really spacious. The communal areas at the hotel, pool, reception are all gorgeous. The spa is huge and amazing, my partner and i both had great massages there.
As other reviewers have said, the fact you have to pay separately for the ferry to the island isn't great, as it is the only way to get there. And they really do add on a lot of costs and other extras, so the check-out bill is pretty high. Is what it is, we felt it was overall worth it as we loved our stay, but i guess i'd say to people to make sure you factor this in to your budgeting.
Beautiful setting in the middle of the jungle, nice and spacious rooms, 2 private beaches, great breakfast
No options for children, limited restaurants
Large pool, great games room for kids, kind staff, good choice of food in buffet, nice rooms.
This is sadly not a 5 star experience. The beach is disappointing - the water is extremely shallow (below knees) and very hot and feels swampy, there’s no beach to lie on or walk along and you’re looking out at Oil Tankers waiting to dock in Kota Kinabalu. The activities are expensive and everything is booked up in advance - Coral Garden snorkelling involves a boat ride through trash-filled waters to see dead coral at a cost of RM150 pp. Food and drinks are very expensive. No sign of monkeys or other wildlife (other than Monitor Lizards), nowhere to walk… All in all an expensive and disappointing stay that resulted in us leaving a day early. Deceptive marketing.
Surrounded by spectacular nature, beautiful architecture, very comfortable, lots of activities, friendly and helpful staff, villas are hidden among the trees and private, food was delicious
It took a VERY long time to get our food when ordering lunch every day of our 5 day stay (simple lunches were often 1.5-2hrs). The water stations were often empty or missing cups. The price for the boat is quite expensive given it’s only 10 minutes. They could use more lounge chairs. They also didn’t have certain toiletries on request that you would expect at a five star hotel.
Before setting . Pastry chef - these were amazing and she managed to run the entire station solo.
Everyone was working hard but the were no where near enough staff . We also got charged for using paddle boards but when we went to use them there was no mention of it being chargeable. A lot of the activities were full - which isn’t ideal when you are on an island - it generally felt understaffed and lacking management . That said the staff there were doing a great job doing the job of many with only a few. Sadly also rubbish - there was loads in the sea which us and other guests made efforts to remove each day. Again no staff seemed present on the beach. The hotel is quite large and all sun beds are crammed into a small area around the pool - there was a whole length of beach underutilised sadly. Has so much potential but just not being fully realised .
The one area that genuinely stood out was the spa. The service there was excellent and was by far the highlight of our experience.
Unfortunately, our experience at Gaya Island Resort was disappointing from start to finish, particularly given that this is marketed and priced as a five-star resort. Our arrival set the tone. After being up since 5am, followed by a long drive and a flight, we arrived for our boat transfer only to wait more than an hour because there were apparently not enough boats available. This is difficult to understand when the resort knows in advance exactly how many guests are arriving and their flight/transfer times. Surely transfers should be coordinated accordingly. By the time we eventually reached the resort, it was approximately an hour and a half after arriving at the jetty. In my opinion, you should not be offering private transfers to other guests if you can’t even provide a basic service. I subsequently emailed the resort regarding our concerns and, disappointingly, did not even receive an acknowledgement for three days until we checked out. There were then numerous smaller details which, individually, may not seem significant, but collectively simply don’t reflect a five-star experience. There was no welcome amenity whatsoever in the room, not even a small piece of fruit, biscuit or chocolate, which is something we have rarely, if ever, experienced at a resort of this level. We specifically paid for the premium villa with a view, yet our supposed view was largely obstructed by trees and branches. Having paid a premium for this room category, this was particularly disappointing, especially considering the additional climb up several flights of stairs to reach the villa. The room itself was also extremely dark. There are blinds throughout, but opening them is unnecessarily difficult. Some require you to actually climb into the bathtub and kneel on the ledge to reach them, and opening all the blinds can easily take 10–15 minutes.
Beautiful setting
Too expensive for what you got. Also could only eat at the resort and food was expensive
Beautiful
Could be better with more veg meals
Czystość pokoi mozna by poprawić, bardzo drogi transfer do i z hotelu. Kuchnia mogłaby ulec poprawie, w restauracji dość drogo i smak potraw przeciętny.
The breakfast had a very good selection of foods . The fresh juice was lovely. I enjoyed the fresh omelettes. The lunch selection was very good also. The lunch on the small island ( 4 minutes away) was wonderful as the menu provided foods we had not tried like seaweed salad and raw fish. Rizen the waiter was wonderful as he showed us the resident large lizards and ensured that our meal came promptly (in 30mins) aa we had to catch the boat back . Also we enjoyed talking with Scott the marine biologist who was a full bottle on the marine wildlife and coral. Lots of fish to see Snorkelling .
I would have Prefered some of the main meal meat options to be boneless. Also we were a bit disappointed that there was minimal wildlife to see on the night tour and mangrove tour.
Beautiful location, nice pool. Villas are expansive with more space than you could need.
Extremely poor value for money food and activities (tasteless food, at 10 times the cost of dinner on the mainland, and snorkeling trips to dead coral reef). Resort not super well maintained for the prices spent (big dips in the mattress, ant infestation in the bathroom)
The very friendly staff, snorkelling the house reef just off the beach.
It’s an expensive place, we knew that beforehand. The food was expensive but good. Still at the end with all the taxes added and especially the boat transfers the total cost is a shocking amount of money. As others have mentioned the cost of the 10-minute boat ride should be included in the room costs. We paid a total of 166€ for a family of four ( 2 adults& 2 teens) just to be transported to and from the island for our two night stay. The amount for extras ( transfer, taxes, food and drinks, really nothing special or exuberant amounts of food and drinks, no excursions) was approximately the same amount as the initial room charge on booking. So double that amount to get an idea of what you will spend.
Lovely apartment with amazing views, lots of activities, Japanese restaurant excellent
Lots of problems with our pre-booked tours- disappointing given we confirmed twice. Breakfast not ready when it was open
Naturalist team and activities are first rate!
Stayed many times at other YTL properties. This one poorly managed so does not live up to the high bar they have!
It’s in a beautiful peaceful spot, lovely beach, lovely room with great AC and a huge bathtub, and the staff cannot be faulted
This place bleeds you of money like no other. We live in Central London and still got sticker shock. £150+ for a buffet dinner in resort for two. £60 for the boat over plus a fuel surcharge on top. Although it’s nice, the resort doesn’t match up to this pricing. No drinks orders taken at your sunbed, no 5-star food experience etc and the excursions while nice are not 5-star resort level. We had a lovely time but it’s more of a 3-star experience
Gorgeous location!! Property is stunning with lots of amenities and very attentive staff.
Nothing to note
Beautiful Location, very nice rooms - very comfortable, most friendly staff! We had a great time staying at this beautiful island. There was always enough space for everyone at the beach, nice Ocean and pool! The gym is small but with everything we needed. Loved the extra room for table tennis and bill board. They offer lots of daily activities, but we didn’t participate. Food is great, a lot of options and fair pricing! We really enjoyed our stay here, got what we expected - a couple of days maximum relaxation! ☺️
Dark swimwear is preferable, the pollen in the pool has stained our light-colored clothes quite badly; hopefully it will come out at least partially in the next wash
very comfortable room and refreshing , the service from everyone was excellent. The choice of food was outstanding. we didn’t like the walk to our room as it was a steep climb but we got use to it in the end . The setting was paradise
very glamorous, cannot really fault it .it was a really relaxed place
Incredible place. Surprisingly suitable for vegans - The chefs at the buffet, which by default has some vegan / many vegetarian options, made us a custom dish every night with no extra charge. Plus, as a vegetarian you only pay half for the evening buffet. Totally recommend!
Comfortable room. Staff very friendly with most trying to help you enjoy your stay. Remote private beach was much better than the central beach.
Food was very expensive and choice of dining was limited. Pool area felt closed in with sea view only through rows of sunbeds. Sea view rooms were up a stexep hill, not aed being close to sea. Terrace seats were fixed and looking at the room, not the sea. Villas were a 1/4 share of a concrete house. Sea dirty with Plastic rubbish. And much more......
Lovely break from the city and a great place to relax and do nothing. Very polite and friendly staff. We received a very warm welcome and they acknowledge our wedding anniversary stay. Nice size room. Pool area was great. Loads of sunbeds and cabins tucked away if you'd had enough sun. Happy hour was a nice touch. Pool bar food was good. It was nice having a meal bought to your table rather a buffet all the time and for it to be casual. It was too hot to dress up!
Not all the dining options were open every day all the time we were there. The pool bar food was more than enough for an evening meal yet they stopped serving food around 5.30. I would have preferred eating there for lighter meals in the evening as I didn't want the big buffet option every night. The main restaurant was hot. Because of its open design, the only air conditioning was ceiling or floor fans. There are lots of steps to some rooms, which may not suit those with mobility issues. The beach isn't massive. It's small.
The location is beautiful and we love that the rooms are set high up within the lush forest. It’s a relatively small resort which is nice. We also loved the sun beds on the sand with access to both the ocean and the pool. The food at feast village was delicious with different options every night. The staff were so welcoming and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. They made us feel very special. We felt genuinely sad to leave.
Nothing
Exclusive Peaceful
The cost of boat to and from jesselton harbour should be complimentary at check in and check out
Everything
Nothing
It was lovely place to stay for a few days of relaxation between our adventures around Borneo. We had a beautiful room up on the cliff edge overlooking the sea- a kinabalu suite- and it's nice waking up to monkeys and the view. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. We done a couple of the activities- snorkelling, mangrove kayaking, sunset cruise and nature trail, which were all good. Gym was alright and used library to swap our books.
Would have been useful to have an information booklet about the restaurants, spa list, etc, or just a QR code to this information as the guy did explain some of it when he showed us round but would have been nice to be able to check menu's, etc, when deciding where to eat, etc. 3 nights was an ideal time to stay, any longer and we'd have got bored- you have to pay a fairly hefty fee for the boat transfers.
Everything
Nothing
This was my birthday present and the staff went over and above to make it special. All chefs Dolis an Wawa, spoiled us with fabulous things to eat. A lovely place to place just a quick jump from Kota Kinabalu
Nothing, we didn’t want to leave
Everything AAA
Rooms and air-conditioning excellent. Wildlife amazing. Food quality amazing. Wildlife naturalists extremely helpful.
Because youre on the island captive, then prices compared to mainland, reflect this. Diving 100GBP a day, food 65 gbp per day. But dont let this put you off, stay 2 days max, IMO.
Gaya Island Resort is out of this world. My partner and I travel a lot and this is the nicest place we have stayed with such a wonderful staff team and full list of fun activities that can keep you busy over your stay. I saw some mixed reviews before booking and I’m so glad I took them with a pinch of salt because this resort exceeded all expectations and we would love to come back and spend longer next time! - Breakfast and dinner buffet are exceptional - Jungle walk, snorkel trip, mangrove kayaking all 10/10 activities. The guides clearly care for and love the natural environment we are visiting and steward the groups with care and infinite knowledge. - The rooms (Kinabalu Villa) are so spacious, clean, and have the most breathtaking views to wake up to with you curtains open for the morning sunset. - The ocean water in front of the resort is beautifully clear and clean and the house reef is filled with interesting marine life - There is happy hour everyday from 4-6 and 8-10 so if you’re into enjoying a drink at sunset or after dinner the drinks are quite reasonable for a resort of this kind. If you’re on the fence, book it!
The staff here are the highlight, everyone is so lovely, from the people who welcome you to anyone you pass walking to your room. The pool is large, clean, but shallow. The private beach that a boat shuttles people to and from throughout the day is beautiful with clear water. The rooms are huge with massive baths, good air con, comfortable beds and high ceilings.
You are really being fleeced by hidden costs your whole stay here. You're already paying a premium for the stay, naturally as it's a five star hotel, but then you're charged exorbitantly for extras, such as the boat ride to the hotel (which is the only way to get there, though if we stayed again, we'd swim instead!) which is about 15 quid per person per direction! Also charge an environmental fee, which is a good cause but should also absolutely also be included in the up-front room rate so people are aware how much the stay will cost them (these charges are not optional, so why not include them). Eating at the resort costs an absolute bomb - the restaurant is buffet only for dinner, no a la carte option, and costs 140 MYR per head PLUS service charge! (Note the definition of a buffet is self-service...). I would absolutely not recommend staying here unless you're happy to end up paying close to double the original room rate to complete your stay. They take massive advantage of a captive market. Also the views from the waterfront are pretty poor as it's where all the huge ships park.
Beautifully appointed rooms, friendly staff, in particular in the bar/restaurants. Very nice and long pool. Loved the private beach and their grilled menu. We had a very relaxing time at Gaya, mainly reading under the tree shade or going on one of the morning guided walks. I also enjoyed my yoga/meditation session.
Check-in is done at quay in Kota Kinabalu and the only way to reach the resort is via private boat with a high charge (a non-included £80 footnote to the reservation which I did not notice). The resort has limited long chairs and every morning people rush to "reserve them", making the common areas near the pool feel cramped for most of the day. Dinning options in the evening are all high-priced with very limited a-la carte options. I was also disappointed to find out the Teppanyaki was actually traditional cuisine without the fun elements. While they promote diving, they have a minimum of 2 divers to run trips which meant I could not dive.
Great staff, beautiful location, loved the pool, gym and room
The monkeys!
Great staff Beautiful location Fabulous rooms
Availability of AI or HB options
Beautiful location Buffet breakfast variety
Needed a fair amount of tlc and general updating. Food pricing was excessive. Evening bar staff were inexperienced and not attentive Steep inclines and many steps to accommodation. They need Golf Carts to help people get around
Dejligt intimt sted.
The staff were excellent and the room and facilities were good . Food excellent
Not the idyllic island resort as it is sold Outlook over the sea often obstructed by anchored cargo ships. Very expensive
Interesting and pretty isolated island for water sports. Also for sun worship and honeymoon couples.
It’s very isolated and the air conditioning was uncontrolled for cooling and no hot water when it was turned off 😱. The air conditioning is so cold and blowing on my head. It has given me a bad head cold 🥶. No iron and no ironing broad. There is a gap in the front door that many insects can crawl into our room and bed. The switches are difficult to get to plug into too.
The nature. The guided walk. The work that was being done on the coral.
I am concerned about the invasive water lettuce in the planters.
Location is great, facilities as well. Service is lovely and many activities available. Most of them are chargeable but still a few complementary
They charge us for the boat transfers which is a ridiculous amount of money for 10min ride. Island hopping in the same area for 1 day 2 islands is 4 times cheaper. They have a lot of taxes that you don’t see anywhere else in the country (fees, service taxes, environmental taxes, night tax, and taxes on every single purchase).
Beautiful small resort with lovely staff. Couldn’t fault it . We had a canopy room. Loved the small private beach.
Additional charge for boat transfer. Should be included in the price. Unable to control AC temperature. Bedside lighting controls in a top opening cupboard which meant you had to remove everything on top to access.
We had a truly memorable stay at Gaya Island Resort, and we would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the entire team. From the beginning, we did experience a few minor discomforts. However, what truly impressed us was how swiftly and professionally the management handled our feedback. Under the excellent leadership of Operations Director, Mr. Shawn, immediate improvements were made, and we felt genuinely valued as guests. The hospitality and kindness shown by all staff members were exceptional. Every team member was always willing to help and assist with a warm smile, making our stay even more pleasant. A special mention to Hani (Asst Mgr) the Head Chef, the F&B Manager, and the entire F&B team — although we couldn’t recall all the names, their service, attention to detail, and quality of food were outstanding. They went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and well taken care of. As a family, we truly enjoyed our time here, and this experience has definitely made us look forward to planning our next holiday at Gaya Island Resort again. Highly recommended for anyone seeking both luxury and genuine hospitality.
Many activities and facilities can be enjoyed. Can fully relaxed at the resort. Delicious dinner buffet and friendly Chef.
Food and beverage offered by poolside bar are no satisfying
All the staff were super-friendly and helpful and the room well designed and comfortable
Although the food was generally good, the main restaurant and ‘fine dining’ restaurant lacked atmosphere and were not pleasant to be in. The biggest disappointment, which is not the hotel’s fault, was the amount of rubbish pollution in the sea. However they could do more at the private beach to remove the plastic floating close to shore. Along with another couple, we were able to fill a whole bin liner on just one morning :(
Everything was perfect, especially the location. The staff was friendly, there was many activities to choose from and overall the whole package was even more than we could have imagined.
It's on an island, so the prices are comparatevely a bit high, including the mandatory boat to the resort.
Relaxing. Fab bedroom. Excellent staff. Check-in and check-out service were very efficient but friendly.
My overall experience was fantastic
No shower head
Not likw luxury quiet place anymore
Location and rooms
A bit expensive- particularly speed boat from KK
Mvh Jan Pelle
The staff of the resort are fantastic. They are the stars of the place. We signed up for a hike with Angel. My partner was having some knee pain and asked if the resort had any tiger balm. The resort did not have it but during dinner, Angel came to find us and gave us some pain patches and lotion from her own stash. Such a lovely gesture!
Food is good but options are limited.
The experience at the resort was truly special, when we arrived with the boat personnel was waiting to take our bags we were welcomed with a drink and cold towel and the whole area was shown and explained to us. There are also many activities by the resort which you can do, some for free. We did the mangrove tour and some snorkeling and loved it! I can really recommend this resort for everyone.
The staff were incredibly kind!
Everything was perfect.
The staff were very pleasant and always ready to help. The resort is scenic and beautiful, built around nature. The villa was beautiful and the outdoor seating area has a great view. Breakfast buffet was good with a good spread. The SPA was excellent!
The options for lunch and dinner were limited to a few restaurants only. More options would have been great. The water sports could have offered more options. The outdoor villa seating area must be cleaned more often.
We had a great villa with an amazing view. Huge comfortable bed and great room in total. Pool and beach were clean. towels and water were always available. We liked the exclusive feeling and the atmosphere of the resort. The hotel staff are very actively keeping the beach clean and will als protect you from monkeys.
To a high per night price, you will get charged a premium. First of all, we payed 320 MYR + tax for a boat ride in order to get to the island and back. This was not for a day trip but to get to our hotel. Every price you will get quoted, is the net price. You will pay more on everything, even the mini bar. You will also pay around 50-70 MYR per night taxes on top. Mostly every thing to do will cost you. We went on a guided nature walk and had to pay for this. We were mostly surprised by the dinner buffet. As you are on an island, your choices for food are limited. We only ate at the buffet which cost 150 MYR + tax + drinks per person. Food was good but not for this price. We choose the hotel for relaxation, but you need to hike 15 minutes up a steep hill in order to reach your room. Even after dinner, you will be sweating up the hill. There are no shuttles available which takes away from the relaxation and the overall vibe of the hotel. We enjoyed our stay but for the premium price you pay for the room and everything else, not worth it. Overall what ruins the experience is the feeling that management is really greedy.
Too expensive .
