Location, self check-in
No running water in bathroom. Dirty surfaces. Rat infested, which we could hear at night, and one rat chewed a whole into my new backpack in. We could hear the rats through the night.
Very cute place. Super clean
Nic.
It's nearby the port to Malapascua. In the morning nice views from terrace.
What does good accommodation mean to me? 1. Feeling safe 2. Getting good sleep 3. Cleanliness 1. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel safe here. I was welcomed by a barking dog at the entrance. I usually love dogs, but when arriving late at night in a new place, you simply don’t know how the dog might react. (Maybe putting up a sign saying the dog is harmless would help guests during late check-ins). All night there were rats around & under my bed, and running around my stuff. (No, I don’t have a phobia, but it’s simply disgusting.) In the morning I noticed that 3 out of my 7 bananas were gone. It honestly feels like it’s only a matter of time before someone gets sick. 2. The huge rats kept me awake most of the night, either eating things under the bed or running around my belongings. And if the rats didn’t wake you up, the roosters starting at 4am definitely would. The mattress itself was comfortable though. 3. Cleanliness was okay overall. Usually I don’t leave bad reviews, but you simply can’t run accommodation with a 4.4 rating while having issues like this around the property. The only really good thing is the location near the port for Malapascua. Apparently the owners are nice people (I didn’t meet them personally), but that alone doesn’t define good accommodation. I’ve been travelling around the Philippines for 4 weeks now, and this is the first place I wouldn’t come back to. In the morning when I was like "Oh let's get over the night and have shower and coffee. Kettle didn't work and shower run-out of water. Owner's promised compensation - that didn't happen, they just stopped responding. Luckily Booking.com is fair and they compensate it, cause even they couldn't make agreement with the owner's.
Booked this property last minute for 1 night before going to Malapascua. Eddie and Joy are lovely hosts. Eddie met us at the top of the road, showed us round, took us to get food and as we arrived late welcomed us into their home to eat our dinner. The accommodation itself is great value for money, there is a kitchen area, living space as well as garden and separate balcony with bedroom upstairs. Powerful fans in all areas, TV with Netflix etc, coffee/tea, drinking water. Eddie even drove us to the pier before our ferry, couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay, best option in Maya for sure!
There are negative reviews saying it isn’t clean. This isn’t true, the place is very clean however it is a bamboo built hut by the sea, if you leave food out, this will attract insects - as long as you store food correctly you will be fine, we didn’t have any issues with this during our stay.
Letto molto comodo e Wi-Fi funzionante. Host super gentili ❤️
Echt een fijn plekje. Wanneer je de boot niet meer kunt halen is dit the place to be!
It’s a really cute 2 floor studio. Good views and location. Great wifi, very clean
The shower had absolutely no pressure. Trying to have a shower was very tough, we gave up. Couldn’t sleep during the night since you have 5 roosters screaming from 3.30am until 8am. In addition, some locals start hanging around from 5.30 am in front of the house and it was impossible to fall sleep with that noise.
The staff were so kind for my one night stay before heading to Malapascua the next morning. Romeo guided me to the Joyful Hut and arranged a short motorbike ride to Maya Port at my desired time the following morning. It was the warmest welcome to the Philippines, and made me feel super comfortable as a female solo traveller from the UK.
Good location
No air condition. Not clean Not 2 bedroom. Small living room and small room
Rien
The staff was available. Spacious.
It was dirty, smelled bad, got a weird vibe from the staff and felt really uncomfortable. The whole area around was really loud you can hear everything around you and we woke up to the neighbors karaoke party at 7am. It’s not close to the maya-malapascua port as advertised (20 min walk and not 3).
I like everything the staff is friendly and willing to help immediately.
Lovely owner and nephew. We arrived super late and every restaurant around us was closed so they drove to a restaurant further away and got us some food. Very cozy hut with everything you need.
Nice and calm place to stay! Great view and very nice staff
The gentleman who manages the property is very kind and helpful, even had a beer with me in the evening.
If you enjoy experiencing local life, that is exactly what you can try
Romeo welcomed us late at night and the location is ideal for taking the ferry to Malapascua
The Bathroom
Beautiful view, stylish interior with a vibe, all super clean and full eqipped. And helpful host! HIGHLY RECOMENDED!
All was just perfect
Lovely hut! Nice spot to feel the local vibe! The host was super kind and helpful!
Romeo, however, was very kind and nice. Thank you!
One of the worst night I have ever had. The bed was small and the place was okay. There was noise outside since 1:30am in the morning, it did not stop all morning, and we hardly slept. I would recommend going elsewhere if you want to sleep. We got charged 170php for a 5 minute journey to the port, very expensive.
It’s by far the cutest, nicest and coziest place we stayed in the Philippines so far. We arrived really late (1:30h am) and the owner was still waiting for us to give us a nice welcome!
Its a pretty nice house right on the sea shore, however its not so suitable for swimming. Water, instant coffee was provided.
We arranged a pick up with the staff for the next morning to the port and they told us to be ready at 7:40 in order to catch the 8am boat. We were ready by 7:40 and nobody showed up. They arrived at 8:20, saying we cannot make it to the 8am ferry yet (obviously) and they will be back by 8:40 to catch the 9am one. We were waiting and no one showed up again, so because of them we missed 2 boats. We arranged our own trasport in the end, I believe we would be still waiting for them now. The whole interior is basically outside as there are no proper walls, it can get very noisy and hot (a rooster farm is literally 2 meters from the bed and there was a very loud celebration in the village that night until 2am) might be something to consider if you are a light sleeper.
The place is very well maintained and all the facilities are in good conditions. Romeo was very attentive, by far the best host we had on our 36-day trip to the Philippines. He gave us very valuable tips on how to get to the hotel. When we arrived, it was night and raining, the van dropped us off on a street near the hotel and he was there waiting for us with two umbrellas.
The bamboo house is really beautiful and magical! It has everything you need for a short stay. The host has been great and helped us finding and booking everything we needed. Really recommend! Thank you
The only think we didn’t like were the roosters right outside our door that were yelling all night :(
excellent location, cleanliness in the rooms, we were greeted late at night, all questions were solved very quickly
The roosters in the neighbor's yards get up early. But it didn't bother us.
Very helpful and accommodating owner, there was no problem with late night arrival. The roosters will not let you sleep but you will see a beautiful sunrise. You enjoy breakfast in the garden and thanks to the proximity of the neighbours you are like a local for a while.
We fell asleep to the sound of the waves, from 2am onwards the waves were replaced by the roosters, which abounded around the area and never stopped. 😂
Super cute, unique and romantic place with very helpful and kind hosts. You can’t find a better place to watch the sunrise from!
The water pressure was a little low. But this is the Philippines provinces and it is to be expected. The bed is a little small but it is advertised as such.
The hut has a beautiful garden, a terrace on the first floor, and it's a beautiful little place. The shower was great, the living room too, and I didn't even realise there was a second floor with the room and terrace! The bedroom had a mosquito net and a fan, it was ideal for a night before taking the ferry to Malapascua. I could have stayed longer to truly enjoy the place!
It was a bit tricky to find at night from google maps: just ask the hosts for directions, they actually got someone to wait for me so they could guide me in!
Assisted timely for a late night checkin. Prompt communication, very polite owner. 1 bhk hut with seaview. Provided all toiletries, towels and even mosquito repellents. The property also has a gas stove, kettle and a complete kitchen. Fast wifi, a big screen TV with a good quality sound bar.
There is a rooster that runs around the neighborhood and he is insomniac. He will wake you up early🥲
Our overall stay was alright, but unfortunately, we had a disappointing interaction with the owner. Initially considering extending our stay, we opted against it due to feeling judged for not maintaining pristine cleanliness with kids around. Balancing family fun and tidiness can be challenging. We had intended to tidy up after a quick trip to Malapascua Island but were met with a complaint upon our return before we had even checked out. While the place was indeed messy, we had not yet completed our stay or the necessary cleanup. It was a frustrating experience that overshadowed an otherwise decent stay.
Really comfy, private hut
Really cute apartment with a well equipped kitchen, free tea and coffee and a great tv to relax
Nice view. Very helpful staff.
No a/c. Many roosters to wake you up early. It didn't really cool off enough with just fans
The most magical and special place. We just hand a night here before our ferrry but wish we had longer. A front and back garden going back out to the sea and just fabulous. Super Wi-Fi and a treat to be able to cook for yourself and chill on a sofa. Really cute local surroundings too and everyone was so so helpful.
Nothing it was amazing
It's a convenient place for a night's stay if you've missed the boat to malapascua. Het host is very friendly. It's cheap.
On Booking it says the hit can accommodate 4 people. We'll, that's not true. There is one small bed upstairs with no walls, so kind of outside. On the ground floor is a small bedsofa, but the springs are terrible and hard and it only fits one. So I ended up sleeping on the floor on a thin matras. We saw a lot of rats right at the next door neighbour's dock and the roosters start at 2AM...
It’s just a small bungalow next to the old port - if you didn’t catch your ferry it’s great to stay here overnight. Dont worry about the neighbors- they are all super nice and helpful!
Not much to do around besides the beautiful sunrise
Super nice and funny host :)! He sent me to a restaurant for food pick up after I arrived quite late!
Host is very helpful and nice. It is well managed.
woke up by the cocks at 3am but it is inevitable since the place is in remoted area.
Amazing place, really well built, tons of plants, all the amenities needed for a short stay. The owner is super helpful. They even organize a transport for you to the port of Maya if needed.
If you’re sensitive to noise this place can be a bit noisy with all the cocks and the early bird fishermen
Nothing we had the worth night ever
About 30-40 rats were running / climbing INTO the flat, they was trying to open our bags, the trash … My friend who was sleeping downstairs didn’t sleep at all because he was afraid to be bitten. I really don’t like to put comments like this but it’s a huge security warning I had to share for the next guests
We didn’t enjoy our stay at all.
We organised a transfer through the contact here which was one of the most awful experiences. Our driver was consistently falling asleep at the wheel and was extremely dangerous. I know the joyful hut cannot be fully responsible however it felt like this wasn’t organised through proper channels. The tab in the bathroom didn’t work, really uncomfortable. I feel if we were better prepare for would have been okay but the pictures are not reflective of the stay.
We arrived late because our bus from Cebu city was heavily delayed because of heavy traffic. They stayed up and met as near the property to show us the way. The hut is very nicely decorated and absolutely clean. They offered a mosquito net and repelent, which kept us safe all night. Highly recommend.
Staff were very friendly, the lodge had plenty of space.
Note that the property is at the old port not the new one that the buses and ferries go to. It was very open, which was not an issue other than the fact there was no soundproofing, this made my night sleep quite distrusted as there was lots of noise throughout the night.
It is such a cute place! Amazing view and atmosphere.
It's a lovely house, very good furnished. I loved to spend a night here in this special place before going to Malapascua. The view to the sea, the beautifully decorated garden, the drinking water for free, the cozy bed upstairs! The owners are very friendly and helpful.
Bathroom may be adventurous for some (very little water from the shower and toilet without flush, the DIY Option ;)
We enjoyed staying for one night on this nice bamboo nipa hut. You cannot swim on the beach here, its full of black dirty mud.
Wasn't able to swim on the beach.
The Hut is located at the waterfront with an amazing view in the morning. It has all utilities you would need and is a good size for 2 people. The owners are extremely friendly and the location is close enough (10-15 min walk) to the ferry taking you to Malapascua. It is a unique once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Be aware that everything is open and the nature around is quite loudly, especially the roosters and dogs in the early morning. Therefore, I would not recommend it for light sleepers and people who generally value peace and comfort. The bed is also a bit hard, I would probably not recommend for a longer stay. Might also become a bit too packed for more than 2 ppl.
What a lovely place! Nice view, comfortable, spacious (at least for 2 persons), and the place has everything what you might need: drinking water, stove, fridge, smart TV, nice speakers, full bathroom, balcony. Joy gave us a joyfully welcoming and was very kind to us! Looking forward to come back someday again
Everything is open, so be prepared with some mosquitoes repellent.
This is a great little place in a very convenient location for Maya port to Malapasqua or getting a bus across to go to Bantayan. The hut has a lovely garden and patio with a beautiful sunset view. There are a few shops and places to eat close by and a little kitchen with everything you need if you want to cook something. The upstairs sitting area is nice
The only problem is the noise at night from dogs, chickens, mosquitoes, people talking and singing and engine noises (boats and motorbikes). I got no sleep at all, but that did mean I was up to see the sunrise 🌄
Hut is spacious. I think it can fit up to 8 persons. CR is spacious too. Property handler is very corteous and kind. They waited for us until we arrived at 10PM and even showed us stores on where to find food. They are responsive on our inquiries too.
None. Everything is perfect for us.
This place is truly beautiful. It has everything you could need, all the home comforts such as a full kitchen and Netflix. It has a beautiful view for sunrise. The owners were very helpful, as we arrived very late they collected some food for us, and in the morning escorted us to breakfast and the shops. They also arranged a trike to take us to Maya port. It is walking distance but we had a lot of heavy luggage. I loved all the beautiful plants around the building and you can tell a lot of care has gone into making this place as incredible as it is.
There is open spaces around the building which mosquitos could get in, however don’t let this put you off as they provide mosquito spray. we have our own mosquito net so didn’t need to request one, looking at other reviews this can be provided but I would suggest having a permanent one for guests to use if they wish would be useful. A toilet seat would also be appreciated.
The most amazing little hidden paradise! If you wish to make the places you sleep a part of your experience. This is a most go!
You can’t really see the place from the road, but it is there ! I just asked a woman on the street for Joy and everything went smooth. Also maybe bring mosquito spray would be a good idea, so you can enjoy the lovely outdoor area after sunset!
My wife and I spent 1 night at the hut because we missed the last boat to malapascua, so totally by chance, this night was one of our best nights in the Philippines. The hut is designed so nicely, it's so cozy and feels like your small home away from home. There's a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, bedroom with a small balcony, livingroom equipped with a smart tv and a sound bar, wifi, and a big back yard with steps going down to the ocean. The owners were so friendly and welcoming. They showed us where to buy groceries and dinner, gave us all the information we needed about malapascua, and even invited us to their own house for drinks and snacks!
The only downside is that the place is far from the boat pier, but it's only 20min walk so not so far and definitely worth it!
the owner and his wife was soo friendly. He showed me a really good Restaurant and also brought me to the port with his motorbike on the next day. had a really good chat with Joy :)
There were a lot of mosquitos but they had insect repellent and a mosquito net.
