The property is in a very nice location but the hotel is closing down tomorrow so not ideal
No room service, no breakfasts , bar was closed Saturday night, no soap in bathroom . Had to buy extra toiletries from the local shop. We booked 2 king rooms but one could not be used due to a broken toilet. I don’t blame the staff as this closure was out of their control. The hotel should never have let us book in the first place with all these problems.
Room spacious for 3 adults and comfortable. Staff helpful.
Would have preferred supper and breakfast on the premises.
The room was lovely, spacious and comfortable.
Unfortunately there were no eating options when I was there due to a staffing issue. As I was travelling alone without a car I had hoped to have breakfast and the evening meal on site. This wasn't possble, so had to eat elsewhere in walking distance and the same for breakfast. Luckily for me both were possible.
Traditional English pub with quirky element to our room, really nice decor x
The window was smashed / broken in our room so the traffic was loud and kept us awake
No breakfast provided as kitchen closed even though we had paid for it. Still waiting for refund
There was no breakfast as kitchen had a leak and limited beer as he hadn't had a delivery
Reception window was very dark, bar was shut very early and he didnt inform us of this
We would like to make note that the receptionist offered to carry one small but heavy suitcase up the stairs to our room and, we were very grateful for that. We liked our room and it was all well prepared and clean. The bed was comfortable and we slept well
Breakfast could not be served as there was a major problem in the kitchen. We had been told that we could take breakfast over the road but we needed to journey on before the first starting time. Although cups, spoons and coffee sachets were provided, there were no milk sachets and no sugar sachets. We felt that at the very least, milk sachets or a small jug of fresh milk could have been placed on the tray. We did drink the black coffee but for me not with any enthusiasm.
Good location
The staff did not inform us about the kitchens being closed, even though we had paid for breakfast for two days. Nor were we informed about a key code and the doors being locked at 10.30 on a Saturday night. at 11pm on the Saturday We were locked out of the hotel and there were no emergency staff or telephone numbers available . The phone numbers and email addresses I did have did not answer. In the end we had to find alternative accommodation. We got a small discount back but it does not make up for the anxiety trying to find alternative accommodation without any of our luggage or toiletries. It ruined our break.
No breakfast as a pipe was broken and they did not offer an alternative., Crumbs on the bed. No soap in bathroom. probably in the middle of a management change - would not recommend it.
As the pub was unable to offer breakfast or dinner, we gave a poor review
As above, as the chef had walked out no food was available. The alternative suggested was a 20 minuet walk along a narrow road with no pavement on a very nasty bend.
room was comfortable but the shower tray outlet was blocked and the shower had to be switched off before the room flooded. we left before the staff arrived at 9.00am so could not report the problem. No breakfast or dinner available due to more plumbing issues in the kitchen.
plumbing fixed
Nothong
The kitchen was closed due to a flood which we were not informed about by you. The staff there told us they made you aware. We therefore were unable to get any breakfast, which we paid for and you confirmed. On the evening we arrived we had to get a fish and chip takeaway and eat it in a local pub. We would like you to refund us the price of breakfast as we were unable to get it.
Just the location
Rooms not very clean no cups in room had to ask staff member not very helpful reluctant to help saw no other staff and the other we saw seem very disinterested when asked anything only knocked price off bill for breakfast as said the kitchen was closed and no were to go till after 9.30am we was only notified about the food situation at 4.30 Friday afternoon via booking.com messenger and we were due Monday to arrive so give use no time to alter booking to somewhere else
Due to unforeseen circumstances the kitchen was closed, so meals had to be obtained elsewhere. Staff were helpful with other options.
Bar staff was great, friendly. Parking included.
Not much for food in the town. The Walnut Tree was good though.
We just did not stay enough to comment
It turned out to be a nightmare. We checked in and no special instructions were given. We went out for the evening and on return found the main door locked with a number lock and no instructions either by e mail or at check in. There was nonnumber to contact and we had to stay at travelodge. When we returned the next day, we just got an insensitive sorry from the person at reception. We just received a mail few days in advance to say kitchen was not working and no breakfast and we had to work hard for the refund. Overall poor experience and would not recommend it.
The room we stayed in was a nice size and the beds were comfortable.
Unfortunately there were a few things we didn't like. First, when we arrived we were told the kitchen had flooded and that the chef had left. I know these things happen, but instead of offering something that wasn' t cooked, we were merely told there were other places we could go for breakfast/evening meal. We were told there would be toiletries in the room, but this just consisted of some handwash. The room was nice but there were layers of dust on the mirrors. When we ran the bath, the water came out a curious yellow colour.
The only positive was the staff.
There was no breakfast, which we paid for. Warned that bath could tip over if sat on.
None of the plumbing was working so the bathroom couldn't be used
The location of The George was great for visiting Stourhead National Trust. The village of Mere is really pretty.
Unfortunately although I had booked bed and breakfast the kitchen was closed due to the cook resigning. I was not informed of this prior to arrival. No evening dinner and no breakfast provided. Why couldn’t they have provided a continental breakfast, no cooking required?? I unfortunately also had a guest in the next room that woke me up both mornings at 7.15am (I’d have quite liked a lie in) with wretching and vomiting, not a pleasant experience to be woken up to.
The barman did everything he could to try and assist us with getting dinner and breakfast. He allowed us to buy fish and chips and provided plates, cutlery and allowed us to eat them in the pub. He was very apologetic.
Due to a flood in the kitchen, their was no restsurant service for dinner or breakfast. We had paid for bed and breakfast and did not receive a deduction on our bill for the lack of breakfast which we had to go to the local tea shop for. The room was very dirty, dust everywhere, carpet not hoovered, stains on a very unstable chair, no shower, no hot water.
Friendliness of staff
Some breakfast Turning the heating off A room further away from the noise In the bar
Comfortable bed
No food as chef quit so included breakfast was unavailable. No shower only mixer shower in bath, small tv, bar ran out of both types of lager. I overheard some locals saying that the pub might be closing down so could be why nothing was available. Overall room was ok for the price but a bit disappointing facilities
We paid for bed and breakfast but told there would be no breakfast as they had a leak and also the chef had left.
Accommodation very dusty and the fact that we were not given what we had paid for, ie breakfast. Also our shower leaked all the time and the noise of running water made it hard to sleep. Plus we could not get hot water in the wash basin unless we let it run for 10 minutes plus.
Really good location
The room hadn’t been hovered…very dusty and shower didn’t drain. Very tired. No chef so breakfast was supposed to included but wasn’t we were offered a free drink instead. Rude manager
The cushions were not clean. I shall not go into detail. Eight o'clock breakfast did not happen. I opted not to stay for the second night.
Parking. Location. Historic attractive building.
No chef. No dinner available. Room not serviced for our duration. One night locked out. Door bolted on he inside,
The bed was a king and very comfy we were close to relatives and the coop so was lovely location wise. Staff were friendly and helpful, it's dog friendly too!
There was zero hot water in our room, very little pressure in the hot tap in general, no cooked breakfasts Monday or Tuesday which I didn't get told till day of arriving...very hot in the room too which isn't bad but isn't too good either ....wasn't the cleanest but definitely had been cleaned just abot out dated I think lovely sized room bed very squeaky but comfy mattress to sleep on and a huge room but yh I'd definitely stay in my cabin next time as there was a smell of garbage when coming downstairs too in the mornings
The building is lovely and quirky, Great to have a car park.
The rooms could have been cleaner .The food was either not good or non existent.Very few staff, who seemed very stressed.Such a shame as has potential to be lovely.
Property was lovely and not in bad order for an old building, couple of small issues though, no towels in the room and the heating system must of gone off at 10pm and did not come on in the morning so was a tad chilly.
Host was charming and went above and beyond. Spacious room. Very comfy and quiet location.
Nothing
Quaint location
No evening restaurant/ bar even though it was Sunday evening. Breakfast very over cooked
Great location for our trip to longleat and Stonehenge
Not much, other than spacious room.
Shown to a room that had not been set up after the previous occupants! Loud quiz night under our bedroom, only a cold shower in the morning and after 3 weeks of b & b in the UK, this was a poor breakfast. Sensor light in bathroom when getting up in the middle of the night not welcome!
The owner Lee who cooked us a great special meal on the Saturday. Good service also by Matt.
The bathroom!! No way to really shower and a roll top bath which is difficult for many to climb into.
Very friendly and helpful. I was surprised how quite it was in our room. We had the pie's for dinner and they were delicious, if I wasn't on a bike I'd have brought some to take home. I'd definitely recommend staying here to anyone.
Nothing much. The room was cold and the bathroom freezing. The heating was off when we returned in the evening. Impossible to have a bath/shower. Just too cold.
Really didn't like much at all, unfortunately. The TV didn't work. When mentioned to member of staff in the morning he thought it quite amusing - there is a knack evidently!
The evening meal was ok, in particular the fish and chips was very good. The restaurant staff were friendly and accommodating.
The room wasn’t made up on arrival and needed to be hastily cleaned and linen changed by the stretched bar staff. The room didn’t have the king sized bed as advertised indeed I suspect we didn’t get the room booked.
No shower in our room, we had 3 guy’s sharing!
Comfy beds. Friendly. lovely room.
Evening menu could do with a few more choices.
Under staffed or untrained, either way not good enough, it took 10 minutes on arrival to be seen, we were then given a key and someone pointed to the stairs, we assumed it was table service but had to keep going to the bar for menus etc, after our main meal as table was left with dirty plates etc, we were not asked if we wanted a dessert or another drink, after a few trips to the bar to find no staff we retired to our room at 8.40 and had to got to bed to keep warm. The heating came on in the morning just in time to thaw out to eat minimal breakfast half of which was burnt.
The food was excellent. Irish stew vennison pie, and Sunday roast. All staff very friendly & helpful. Log fire in the main bar most welcome. Room comfortable.
Free standing roll top bath with shower hose. Not suitable for elderly or restricted ability persons. Bar, lounge, and dining room closed at 6pm on Sunday. No other hostelries are available either. Village appears to close down on Sunday evenings, except Co op store. Had to retire to room.
Great property with old quirkiness
Nothing
We received such a warm welcome and fantastic hospitality.
Breakfast was hearty and tasty.
The Manager was excellent. Very helpful and went over and above to accommodate us and provided the best of welcomes. The breakfast was very good quality and cooked well. Perhaps an extra rasher of bacon or some beans would be a good thing but we love our breakfast so maybe we're just being greedy! The rooms were very clean with plenty of tea, coffee etc. Bar was very old and quaint with a lovely fire and beautiful xmas tree. Lots of board games etc provided. We would stay again.
There was nothing to really dislike, although if being picky, the mattresses were a bit lumpy and the curtains in our room were way past their best and could have fitted the bay a bit better but they did the job okay. Pillows were a little flat.
Comfortable room and bed.
Very limited, pie based menu! Breakfast finished at 9 pm on a Saturday, had to be out of room by 10 a.m.
The friendliness of the staff and in general it was a cosy comfortable inn
Could've of done with the heating being onupon arrival especially for the time of year
The staff were incredible! Great food and a lovely pub and rooms.
The host was so welcoming, and good company. We arrived at 9.15pm and he cooked the four of us dinner. The homemade pies were beyond fabulous. Beautiful decoration.
Lovely location. Quirky, wobbly 17th century pub. Comfortable room. Home-cooked food. Full sized kettle and delicious hot chocolate in the room.
Due to a broken boiler, there wasn't any heating or hot water on our first night. The dining room needs a printed menu, not staff trying to remember what's on offer. The shower is quite slippery and needs a mat and a bath mat for the bathroom floor. And state on the details there is no hairdryer in the room.
Really really lovely stay. The staff were brilliant. We had lunch and breakfast which were extremely tasty. Accommodation was very very comfortable and warm and plenty of tea making facilities.
All good.
Fantastic place! Staff were so welcoming and the room beautiful! See you again!
Lovely stay, great staff and very clean and comfortable
Nice location and parking available free on site nice staff very helpful and friendly
The room was £95 inches a very small English breakfast could have done with a bit more for a hungry man. The shower was good but the tv was the smallest I’ve seen in a very long time the wardrobe had no doors on it was basic but comfortable for a solo man but too basic really if you’re looking for something modern or quaint say for a nice trip away Dinner was ok nice pie not much in the way of accompaniments. Beer was good
I didn’t rate the breakfast We won’t told about the choice of juice available or offered any toast The fried breakfast consisted of an Over cooked sausage a skinny piece of bacon an egg a few mushrooms I declined the tomato but they had no beans as a substitute
See above I would think twice about staying there again
Location good and easy to find from main road. Bed comfy and good tea/coffee facilities. Good food in pub however a bit basic.
Shower not very warm. All a bit tired, bedding looked off colour and all needed a refurb. Breakfast very minimal and all pre cooked/not very warm.
Room was comfortable.
I was the only resident in the hotel. No staff on duty when I arrived. Had to get someone to text me the code to gain access to the accommodation when I arrived in the dark and rain. No facilities for meal, so had to find a local takeaway. Breakfast was due to begin at 7:45 the next morning. Apparently the chef/cook hadn't been told there were any guests so someone had to be called in at the last minute to cater for my breakfast needs, which after a long delay, I was served at around 8:30.
The staff were very helpful and friendly 🙂 great chats throughout our 2 day stay. The food was delicious and of good quality. You must have a pie. Breakfast really 👍good choice. Nothing a problem if you asked for something added. Rooms clean and comfortable and plenty of space. Deep comfortable carpets. Very old quirky inn, situated in a very pretty town square. Close to longleat , we chose this location because we visited the light festival,
Decor of the bedroom could be refreshed. Because the room was large, the heating could have been on a bit longer (personal choice).
Very nice place. All very friendly. Nice & clean. Lovely evening meal. Very good value for the room. Would definitely go again if in the area.
Down side if you've got electric car nowhere to charge.
We were atttending a funeral and were allowed to check in early, which was much appreciated after travelling for 5 hours. The staff were very friendly, as were the locals. The breakfast was great, we chose a full English and smoked salmon with scrambled eggs on toast, very good coffee too.
Nothing not to like!
Comfortable room. Quiet and not a bad view of the street outside. Food and beer were good.
I would have liked a full english breakfast, but that was not on offer.
The ambiance is truly exceptional
Nothing to report
Lee is an outstanding host, excellent chef and charming bartender. Also great with special requests for little ones, our daughter is 3 and found plenty of things to do and play with.Location is great, love the little town vibes. Great beer ✨
Mattress was bit on the hard side but room was lovely.
The family room we stayed in was by far the best we have experienced in the UK. It was clean comfortable and stylish with 3 proper beds and a lovely bathroom. Breakfast was delicious and the service & friendliness was brilliant. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay & would happily stay again & definitely recommend.
We tried to contact the venue in advance because we had an issue with the checking in times as we were attending a family wedding but didn't manage to speak to anyone & didn't get a return call.
Location excellent Room comfortable Clean Friendly Lovely hot water
Nothing we didn’t like but the breakfast could’ve been better. More choice, should be a vegetarian option eg vegetarian sausages, choice of bread eg brown as well as white
We were offered a lovely Sunday roast dinner even though we arrived after 5.00 pm. Offered a lovely full English breakfast included in the price next morning. Staff really helpful and friendly. Good parking facilities.
Nothing really.
The original old building was great and historic.
Staff were fantastic.
The bed was uncomfortable. But that may just be my taste!
Hosipitality
Nothing
Beautiful room with 2 lovely armchairs and very comfortable bed. Staff were great and breakfast delicious 😋
It felt homely and welcoming
Nothing not to like
All the staff were very helpful and polite, nothing was too much trouble. The room was very comfortable. In particular the scrambled eggs were excellent.
Central village location, pub bar, old world charm. Room 'very vintage' but everything worked. Basic late night sit-down pizza/kebab place 100m down the street if pub restaurant is closed.
Some confusion about WiFi instructions and kitchen closing time.
late booking accepted, dog accepted, takaway accepted when kitchen was closed.
kitchen already closed , no good reading light in the room
Staff very helpful
Chef was ill so no 'cheffed' food
