Reviewed Jul 12, 2025I stayed at Lucky’s Oasis for one night and I honestly regret my stay there was so short! It’s a lovely homestay with amazing, heartwarming and caring owners! Lucky helped me with organizing transportation from Maho, main town in the area, to his place and then to go to Yapahuwa the next morning. Also, I asked for the dinner and it was delicious and huge! I think I could eat it for three days 😂 The area itself is calm and quiet, a Sri Lankan countryside so if you want to spend some time in nature and far from crowds of tourists - that’s the best place to go. I want to come back for longer and explore more of this amazing place!
Thank you Lucky for your amazing hospitality! 🥰

Reviewed Jan 11, 2025Lucky is a great host! He went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. He was very responsive to our questions. Dinner was excellent and plentiful! Accommodations were basic, but fine for us for just 1 night. And, accommodations were very reasonable for the price.
There was nothing that we didn't like. The rooms were warm without a/c, but the fan helped. We didn't have hot water or wifi, which was fine for us because we just stayed the night. Just think it's worth noting.
Great one night stop over on our cycling tour. Comfortable room with fan and modquito net. Good dinner and breakfast served in the garden by friendly owners.
Good value for money.

Reviewed Dec 12, 2024I didn’t stay at the property as the owner had some work done on it. Instead he arranged for us to stay at his uncle hotel a few km away.
Lucky is a good host and wants to make his guests feel welcome. And I appreciate that. But I have a few things to say about my stay.
If you are new to Sri Lanka and are not familiar with what is reasonable price for certain service here are some comments:
The dinner in Lucky’s place is delicious but the most expensive one you will have in Sri Lanka. I have travelled all over the country 3 times in the past 10 years (last trip in 2022) and the dinner at his place is by far the most expensive one I had. Also if you do want to eat dinner at his place you need to decide by 2pm. A bit too early for me to make dinner plans while I’m out and about exploring the area.
The hotel room in his uncle’s hotel we stayed in was very basic; bathroom drainage is very bad so pretty much you flood the bathroom every time you shower and there is no hot water.
The bedroom has no AC, only standing fan which is not enough. Also, There is not WI FI (which wasn’t a big deal for us.). Also for a couple, you will only be given one towel and if you don’t want to share it (I love my husband but prefer my own towel) you need to ask for 2nd towel. Pretty strange.
I cannot say that hotel stuff is the friendliest. I asked for a tea one morning and was pretty much marched out from the reception with very uncomfortable NO! No tea!!! There is a liquor store in the hotel which is handy if you want a beer after a day of exploring.
Lucky is a nice host but for the 70 usd we paid for 2 nights in “Homestay” (inc dinner for 2 ppl and 2 beers) you can definitely find places with hot shower, internet, AC and 2 beers. And eat delicious meal in a local restaurant for 5 bucks pp.

Lucky (the host) and his wife are very lovely people and give you a warm welcome. We had such a nice dinner in the garden in the evening, which Lucky’s wife cooked for us. Also, Lucky gave the amazing tip to climb the Yapahuwa Rock at sunrise. We were the only one there which was a great experience! Thanks for being a good host Lucky!
The room was a bit warm because there was no airconditioning.

Reviewed Aug 2, 2024Lovely homestay with a local family. Lucky’s wife is an excellent cook and made us an amazing dinner, with more than enough food! Lucky obviously cares a lot about his place and was very hospitable ensuring everything was perfect!
Fan was a little small and stuck on the wall a bit far from the bed - think the room would greatly be improved by a standing fan just so that its effects can be felt greater. However it was manageable
Lucky is a born host. Super friendly, helpful and was very welcoming. The homestay is on the road and not far from many interest points in the area.
By far, it was the most expensive place I had dinner in the whole country, the price can be compared to what you find in restaurants in Europe and what was a bit annoying is that once you opt for dinner, you can no longer cancel, even if you do it 4 hours in advance. The dinner is authentic and delicious Sri Lankan food, very well made, but it is quite expensive. Another and only point to mention is the fan. The city is extremely hot, but the room is even hotter maybe due to the roof and the lack of a good fan can make it impossible to sleep, as happened with my friend. A strong floor or roof fan could solve this problem.

Reviewed Jul 14, 2024The host was exceptional. He was so kind and friendly. They cooked dinner for us, arranged everything nicely on the table and did everything they could to comfort us. His wife is a very good cool and it was so delicious. He also went with us to a lake close by and explained plants and traditional things. The view was amazing and the chat with him very interesting.
The room was good, it had a mosquito net and a fan. You could take a table to sit outside, which was nice.
There was no Air conditioner. So the room was really warm and I sweated during the night.
Food was great, host was very nice, helped us with the trip to Yapahuwa
I wanted to visit a really amazing place that was kind of a hidden gem, called Yapahuwa. But because it wasn't famous like Sigiriya I had a really difficult time finding an accommodation close to it. To my great luck, I eventually found Lucky's place and it made my stay perfect.
Here are some things I really liked:
- affordable place to stay
- host with great hospitality, that goes out of his way to make your stay pleasant. Any problem, he fixed in no time for me.
- great and easy communication before arrival to arrange things. I always got a swift and clear reply
- really delicious & great cooking by Lucky's wife, that you can eat in the beautiful garden to make it even more perfect.
- Lucky has a big knowledge of Sri Lanka tourism (I think he was/is a tour guide) and can help you with your travel goals
- I had some really wonderful talks with Lucky about all kinds of things and he is a very interesting person
- because it is a bit remote, the place is really quiet and I quite liked that after the hectic stays in bigger places.
- only about 20 minutes by tuk-tuk from Yapahuwa, so you can easily get there early before the crowds
For me the only unpleasant thing was that my room had no air conditioning. With the humid climate of Sri Lanka, this made me very fatigued all day. Though Lucky said he was working on this.
Also worth noting :
- the shower had cold water, though it wasn't much of a problem for me because of the hot weather. I actually liked it.
- the location is on a road that is away from town (Maho). It's not really a problem if you have your own transport and otherwise Lucky can arrange tuk-tuk or a car if needed. But it's something to be aware of.

Reviewed May 27, 2024Lucky and his wife run two homestays within 150m of each other about 8kms outside the busy service town of Maho, and important railway junction point. Luckys Homestay is the recently built of the two. Very comfortable, with fan (no a/c), and a full-length door in each room that opens on to forest setting. Full sized mosquito nets provide protection from insects, if needed. Lucky is an exceptional host, full of local knowledge and suggestions. Rooms rates include delicious home-cooked breakfast, and lunch and dinner are available by prior arrangement. Again, home cooked. Lucky can provide touring and transport services. This includes some great suggestions that do not appear in the usual travel guidebooks. Homestays are a great way to meet the ‘real Sri Lanka’, including local people. Lucky and his wife are young, warm and hospitable and just the sort of entrepreneurial types that will help Sri Lanka tourism to prosper.

Reviewed Jan 14, 2024A jungle getaway, and definitely an immersive experience far from the hustle and bustle.
Lucky and his wife are amazing hosts. I felt pampered throughout my stay.
They provided me with a bicycle so I could move around freely — discover Yapahuwa temple, and cooked a delicious dinner for me. I am vegetarian and they adapted the dinner accordingly at no additional cost.
Breakfast is included, and so are water bottles.
Finally, they helped me book a Tuktuk and plan the next stages of my trip, which was highly appreciated.
Nothing, it was great. However, you have to prepare yourself for a no-wifi stay (and it feels good to disconnect for a bit folks!).
