Sunil's Homestay Sinharaja

Great place if you are a bird photographer or bird lover. Sunil is the guy and has experience of 35 years as a bird watching guide. He and his wife took care of me for 3 days and we watched the many endemic birds during the trip. He know all the places around the area and we see many rare animals as well. His wife cooks authentic food and you can have an experience of living with the small local family. I recommend everyone, its worth it.

Lovely location. Very helpful owner even though English was not spoken. He was very helpful and made sure we were happy. He was a great guide and really went out of his way to find the animals I wanted to photograph. He was VERY patient with me as I take macro images and was glad he gave me the time to do this. He was very kind and understanding when my husband was very poorly and couldn't come on the walk with us. It was a great location to drive into the NP car park and just look for wildlife outside the park, in the car park. Loved finding the mini ant praying mantis.

There was nothing we didn't like but a fridge would have been helpful.

Sunil is an extraordinary, determined, passionate, experienced, and knowledgeable guide. We saw a substantial number of the rarest birds in Sri Lanka. A retired park guide, Sunil’s expertise and energy are beyond compare. Family-style meals were also delicious. This is a modest homestay ideal for birders on a budget.

Focus is on birds, less so on other animals/plants.

This was my favourite experience in Sri Lanka!! Amazing location and a host whose knowledge of the local birds of Sinharaja can’t be beat!! Do not stay anywhere else if you are birding Sinharaja!!

We loved our stay at Sunil. It is located beautifully in nature, close to Sinharaja. We felt very welcomed by Sunil and Roshini. The food was great and we also very much enjoyed Sunil's bird guiding. He is very knowledgeable!

Nothing, but just be aware that sleeping in such a natural environment comes with the necessary bugs and musquitos 😉

Incredibly friendly people, great food, nice room in a beautiful rural setting. Sunil is a retired Sinharaja park guide who even took me to a nearby place to find a rare owl. So nice!!

La stanza era molto pulita, con acqua calda tutti i confort, oltre che una vista incredibile che ci siamo goduti dal balcone. Sunil lavora da 33 anni nella sinharaja forest e ci ha fatto da guida, facendoci esplorare la foresta e i suoi numerosi animali. La cucina di sua moglie è sublime e totalmente flessibile agli orari dei viaggiatori. Sunil organizza tutto il tuo soggiorno nei minimi dettagli senza farti preoccupare di nulla e offre un prezzo stracciato per i servizi offerti. Sunil and his family were so accommodating. They cooked delicious Sri lankan food for us throughout our short stay. Sunil coordinated a day walk into the rainforest with a guide who was great at explaining the flora and fauna. The room we stayed in didn't have wifi, but it was perfect for getting away from any busy town and tech because it overlooked a beautifully kept rice paddy and the rainforest mountains. You need to stay here if you're looking for authentic and tranquil.

After a hike through the rainforest with Sunil we were welcomed into his house by the family and Sunil’s wife presented us with a fabulous meal . Similarly , the following morning , after a very early start we hiked in the forest and saw most of the birds we had wanted to see . Sunil is an excellent guide - enthusiastic and very knowledgeable . We were then treated to a great breakfast at Sunil’s house .

Lovely stay at Sunil's home. He was very friendly and flexible with our request. His wife cooked nice meals for us. The room has an incredible room.

Sunil is such a friendly and caring host! We had a lovely time at his home. The view was amazing and everything was clean too. We also did a tour through the rainforest with him and he showed us so many birds we couldn't find without him :) We enjoyed the breakfast and dinner too and we would definitely come back and also recommend this place to others who are planning on visiting the rainforest.

Quiet village great host great to visit nearby Sinharaja Rainforest

We really appreciated our time at Sunil’s place, the view was amazing and you are surrounded by jungle. The first night he took us on a night walk to look out for wildlife ! We had dinners, lunches and breakfasts with his family and every meal was different and so delicious ! We visited Sinharaja with Sunil, he is a famous bird guide in the area and we weren't disappointed by his eye for wildlife. He is incredible ! His knowledge and understanding of the bird sounds is crazy. We walked for about 14 kms and saw many lizards, snakes, birds, dragonflies, butterflies and monkeys. We shared a lovely time together, being connected with nature and wildlife. We really recommend this place for those who love wildlife. Thank you so much for our stay !

The beautifull location and the very tastefull homemade food. Sunil allready has 32 years experience in the park and knows a lot. He and his family are very friendly and do their best to give you a good time.

Amazing home made food. Fantastic hospitality. Beautiful location.

Unexpected weather unfortunately which none of us have any control over. Heavy rains and storms to expect during the monsoon. Be well prepared. Make sure the power banks are fully charged, mobile devices are fully charged, waterproof clothing, small torch, candles and a lighter (not a matchbox) Longer power outages can happen due to bad weather.

New room, nice and clean, terrace with beautiful views to the field and forest, Hot shower, good dinner! Sunil works at the national park and Will help orginizing everything and can even be your guide! Great staying with them :)
