We loved our stay here. We ended up helping build vege beds, made a NZ hangi for everyone, and helped design the garden.
OBT was hands down the best experience we have had while traveling not only Cambodia, but South East Asia. A once in a lifetime unique experience where you fully immerse yourself in Cambodian culture and kindness while supporting a really special initiative. Getting to know the community at OBT was so special - we spent both days with Sophal and his family and friends and we felt so welcomed the entire time. The bungalow itself was very comfortable. While basic, it has everything you could possibly need. We stayed for 2 nights at the end of May and the fan in the bungalow kept us cool and at the perfect temperature. Thank you again OBT for such a memorable stay! - Cian & Emily

Sophal’s OBT Homestay is one of those places that help you remember why you’re travelling! Me and my partner were originally meant to stay for a night but ended up staying for 4 nights. You get used to the traditional Bamboo house very quickly too so we would highly recommend. You get breakfast lunch and diner made for you on site - for which you simply just tally up and pay for at the end of your stay. One of the lovely volunteers even offered to walk with us and his family down to the Mekong for a dip! (The sand dunes are lovely) The real highlight though is obviously being able to spend time with Sophal and his family. They were all so lovely and always had time for us. It was such a nice break from missing home!
That we didn’t have time to stay longer 😂

Sophal and his staff made us very welcome and the home cooked food was tasty and authentic. Eating as a 'family' with Sopal and his children and the other guests & volunteer made it a friendly, immersive stay. Facilities are clean although basic, but as described on booking. We stayed in Jackfruit bungalow which was spacious. Bungalows are naturally vented through the bamboo slated walls and floor. Corn bungalow is a large family bungalow close to the dining area and has more countryside views. Showers are cold only. We did a tour of the village in the morning with Chen then visited the NGO school on site in the afternoon. As a UK secondary teacher I thoroughly enjoyed helping in the English classes with Boopa (female teacher) and excellent Sokchea. Both staff are committed and have great rapport with their students. You can also help on site e.g. bamboo splitting for the next phase of the school building development. Food cooked on site is plenty and tasty and fair value for money. It is the only option as the only way to town and Kampong Cham is for Sophal to book you a tuk tuk. Grab does not work here as it is too remote. Earling morning wake up calls with the resident cockrels are all part of the experience! Stay 2 nights to get the vibe of OBT but move on in the morning after your 2nd night to experience more of Cambodia.
For us being remote and the basic facilities were fine. Others may not be so adaptable. If you re happy with this, you'll have an awesome time. We loved it! Also be aware that you can hear the nightlife music from Kampong Cham on the other side.of the river. It generally starts at 10pm to about midnight. This is unavoidable and not OBTs fault.
I really liked how authentic and local this place feels. It’s a true village homestay surrounded by nature, with a very warm and welcoming family and community. I also love that there is a meaningful NGO/education project behind it.
Everything!
I had such a great experience here. It felt so authentic and I loved staying in the bamboo bungalow, and getting to meet the family that run it. The money goes to such a great cause as well. And exploring the village and simplicity of life here was very humbling and life enriching. I would recommend if you’d like to experience a less touristy side of Cambodia.
Rien. C'était fabuleux
This is a lovely place to stay for a day or two. The school project is excellent and it’s great that your tourist dollar is going directly to where it’s needed. We were given a tour around the village and the school.

This is an NGO, and basic. It has a wonderful atmosphere, and family feel. I had a happy enjoyable stay. The host and staff were lovely.
There was nothing to dislike, but be aware it is basic.
Amazing place to stay with very friendly owners and staff. We stayed in a rustic bamboo bungalow which was great and although basic was comfortable and authentic. The food onsite was very good traditional Cambodian cuisine. Sopal the owner is a lovely man and is always willing to help with anything. The job they do there to help the local children is excellent. The children love it and are always smiling and happy. We enjoyed joining in playing football and other games with them. I would highly recommend this homestay to anyone.
Nothing of note everything was great.
Mr. Sophal and his family made us feel truly welcome during our stay. We enjoyed a wonderful three days, with delicious Khmer meals. They offered a fascinating tour of the village and school, and Mr. Sophal was always available, eager to share insights about how OBT operates. His passion for the school is truly inspiring. To top it off, they invited us to the village fair on our last evening, making the experience even more memorable!
Very authentic, connection to the school, manager very friendly. Bamboo cottages are super charming.
