Location
Staff unwilling to help: TV remote controller did not work, staff did not help. Wi-Fi very week, not able to use apps. Only hot water in the shower. Asked for room change - refused because "we do not change rooms". Rubbish food.
Prima bed en kamertje. Vriendelijk personeel.
The George Inn has been beautifully and tastefully rebuilt to the highest standards and with real attention to detail. It's beautifully presented, very clean and the photos of the Inn's long history are fascinating. The room was luxurious and very comfortable, and a lovely place to enjoy a quiet evening and a good sleep after what had been a stressful day. We ate our evening meal downstairs and found the food excellent, and we also enjoyed our breakfast, which was well prepared and in nice quiet surroundings. The staff were lovely and made us very welcome.
The parking at the rear of the hotel is a little difficult to find even with the correct postcode, but quickly popping in for directions set us on the right track. The key is to turn right once you pass the Co-op and to then carry on to the right even though it might feel slightly counter-intuitive at first. Once you reach the end of the little 'road' it's very clear that you are at the back of the George, and it's good parking.
The bed was comfortable. The bathroom had a large shower, very clean
On arrival there were a number of people in the bar who were rather worse for wear, loud and swearing.
We were cycling Devon coast to coast and The George was our mid way stop over. Staff were very helpful. Food was great
Watm welcome, atmospheric inn
In room 8 the shower controls need some attention. Tap was very loose & clashed with loose bolt for other control.
Its location, ambiance and breakfast . A restaurant on site with and an excellent menu.
Not easy to know beforehand where to park the car. For the evening meal the pie of the day was a great disappointment.
The superior double room was large, roomy and the 4 poster bed was very comfortable.
We felt the menu was a little basic.
Thank you, friendly helpful staff, lovely room
No issues
Located in a small village quite easy to find
Very limited breakfast choice, no fresh fruit, yogurt. Confusion about fresh coffee. Coffee machine not working in breakfast room, 1st morning no charge for fresh coffee from the bar but 2nd morning wanted to charge for it!!
Location
Food wasn’t the best my fish was mainly batter and multiple flys in dining area
Great location, lovely rooms, modern clean and smart
It was close to family that ee went to see
Place was grubby in parts, carpets very dirty, room was ok but carpet dirty
Really characterful and sensitively restored building, great big bedroom with plenty of space and a nice bathroom with a good shower. Friendly staff too and a decent brekkie.
The room was verrrry hot - I know we've had some heat waves recently but the fan wasn't up to the job and the window had fixings to stop it opening very far; both made for a quite bad night's sleep I'm afraid. Bed/mattress was also very soft - not for me but I'm sure good for some people.
Room 4 was clean, comfortable, spacious with an excellent ensuite. The staff were friendly and the location suited us being right in the middle of the town.
Booked in the restaurant for a meal on the first night and was presented with a menu to be told that half the items on it were off, so very limited choice. The breakfasts were passable but obviously pre cooked as a full English arrived within minutes and on the second day no mushrooms were available. Also, there was no marmalade for toast on all 3 mornings.
Clean comfortable room Staff all very friendly
Nothing really
Clean tidy and very well maintained
Nothing
Lovely room with plenty of space. Welcoming staff and good breakfast.
Great location for us cycling Coast to Coast.
Breakfast…no fresh fruit! Shower needed a bit of TLC !
Well kept following the 2008 fire.
Small car park.
Lovely old Inn in a quiet, pretty village/town. Great bedroom and bathroom except that the shower door was broken and needed a repair as it wouldn’t close and the floor got very wet when showering. The staff went out of their way to help and make our stay pleasant. I loved the big bedroom and four poster bed and the decor in the hotel area was excellent.
I think the breakfast needs greater variety to cater for different tastes. Many hotels now provide a buffet table and as a non meat eater , gluten free person I would have liked natural yogurt and fresh fruit as an option to a cooked English breakfast . This is just feedback because the cooked breakfast was liked by the other guests I was with.
Location
Breakfast offered no fruit/yogurt which I would have liked (in the past we’ve had it offered)
Very clean rooms, well equipped. Friendly helpful staff.
Would have liked a socket by my bedside to charge my phone. Locked door at bottom of the stairwell was a little inconvenient at times.
Pleasant looking pub in centre of Hatherleigh. On site parking. Passable breakfast and evening meal.
I had booked a twin bedded room but when shown the allocated room it only had a double bed. Advised they were fully booked but after going away to check were shown another room overlooking the kitchen roof which apparently was a cheaper room but twin bedded. The outside temperature was in the 30s and even after we opened the windows (it had restrictors on them which were locked) the room temperature was 29 degrees. This was with a fan in the room. I could not have stayed in that room let alone slept as perspiration was running down my body. My husband went to see if he could obtain a key to unlock the windows so we could open further, came back with the housekeeper's keys but none of them worked. He had a multifunctional penknife with him so set to in unscrewing the restrictor. Finally he managed to get the 4 screws out of the 2 windows and we were able to open the windows fully to benefit from the cooler evening air outside. Had he not been able to do this we would have just got into our car and driven home to Kent. The room was large but not cleaned very well with many dirty patches on the carpet. The hall and stair carpets were filthy. In addition to not getting the room I had initially booked, I had also sent a message via Booking.com asking for a reservation for dinner. When I checked in, it became apparent that they had no knowledge of this, so it seems that they are not reading the booking details or requests. As my husband has said, we will not be returning!
Loved everything about The George - clean, spacious, and very comfortable rooms, and the breakfast was delicious. We’re return visitors and will come back again anytime we’re in the area!
There was nothing we didn’t like!
The food and hospitality was fantastic. Really good front of house and the chef was brilliant
The staff, the food, the location and the building.
Shower wouldn't run cold enough. It was a heat wave ! The controls for the shower needed some attention
This is the third visit to The George, location is good for reaching the nursing home. We always have a comfortable stay
This time we had the small room No12 and is very warm , we have heard previously that it’s a warmer room endorsed by the staff.
Single beds but it was the last room available
Ambiance, Friendly staff.
Lack of Wi-Fi. We were in room 8 it was basically nonexistent.
The room
The evening meal was very poor
Traditional English Pub setting which was excellent, and locked room to store my bike, which was essential for my insurance.
Unable to access my bike to continue my Charity Bike Ride until 8 am, as Bar/Restaurant locked until staff arrived to start preparing Breakfast, I would have had breakfast if it had been available earlier than 8am.
For us it was the location and friendly staff
Nothing
Beautiful building Great location Rooms very clean Breakfast was pleasantly enjoyable - lady overseeing breakfast shift was welcoming and professional
No clear divide from who was staff and clientele Couldn’t find 2 glasses to serve fizz Foul Language Was given the wrong rooms upon arrival
Great location to stay for the Colour Run as second away from the main square where the event starts
Great staff, great pub, great food.
The accommodation was large and clean and very quiet. Great sized tv, big powerful shower, ample towels. Bed was very comfortable and room decoration was clean and tidy. Staff very welcoming on arrival and explained everything we needed to know. Evening meal was good as was the breakfast.
Nothing
The staff extremely welcome and hardworking.
The dirty stair carpet, the brewery needs to change this as it's reflecting badly on the lovely staff.
the breakfast had what we both wanted
Sehr nettes Personal, vergleichsweise großes sauberes Zimmer
Der englische Regen 🙄
An excellent room, which was clean and very comfortable, with some helpful staff.
One evening I was ignored in the restaurant and had to go to the bar to order, which is normal in bars or hotels, so I thought nothing of it, but then I noticed that female customers were served immediately on entering the dinning room. This happened several times by the same waitress. Male customers had to go to the bar and order, females were served at the table? I found this strange, as the previous evening a different waitress was fantastic, giving everyone the same level of good service across the board, irrespective of gender. This strange behaviour happen to several individuals, to the point where it became predictable.
Clean, easy access, friendly staff.
Pushing through noisy groups to access the checking in at the bar. Car park and outside area at the back could do with tidying up. Fruit options for breakfasts would be good.
Lovely staff, gorgeous quaint pub, beautiful location. Second time staying here. Fabulous shower!
There was nothing we didn't like.
Comfortable bed, great shower and easy parking . Staff always friendly and helpful.
Great bedroom and bathroom cannot complain, excellent
Breakfast not the best and food in the bar needs improving
Beautiful superior bedroom. Such a comfortable bed and calm setting.
Nothing.
No fresh fruit or Yohurt
Having a MANAGER in charge
Helpful and friendly staff, excellent food and the room was beautiful
Very comfortable room, friendly and helpful staff. We had evening dinner which was good. Good value
Not made aware at the time of booking - just 36 hours before our visit, about the very loud live music event in the pub on Saturday night. That said it finished at midnight on the dot so could have been worse.
Room was great, staff were very friendly
The breakfast was nice, but could have been better. Quality of ingredients not the best, fresh fruit option would have been nice
Attractive building, comfortable room and nice bar and restaurant for dinner and breakfast
All good
Staff lovely building is lovely and location excellent. Good food
The bed was very noisy with a very sunken /old mattress, uncomfortable. The bar was unpleasant as lots of swearing with folk trying to eat as well. Very young bar staff really seemed like no one in charge to control the loud drinkers. We all like a drink but was a bit over the top
Room very nice as was the whole building. Nice decor etc
Very noisy on Saturday night. People can cope if staying ,as long as it is quite by 12 midnight LATEST . People were shouting and VERY noisy until after1/30 am. It would put me off staying again.
Very good for the price. Dinner in the restaurant was tasty, the included breakfast was great and the room was very clean and had obviously recently been decorated. The upstairs is very smart
We love this venue, the bar feels like a real local, you then head to gorgeous rooms, we come back every year
We were welcomed on arrival and shown to our room by helpful member of staff Drew . The room was a good size and presentable , the bed was particularly comfortable. There was an issue with the shower controls but this was sorted out for us. The George walks a fine line between being a hotel and a local village pub , it's not just there for those of us who fancy popping down to the country for a few days ! There was no music when we were there but understand that from time to time there is. We ate at the pub / hotel one evening a the food was very good + reasonable price. . Beer choice was fair being Timothy Taylors Landlord and Tribute on the hand pull pumps. .
The breakfast was included in the rate and took the form of a DIY cold buffet which maybe lacked a bit of imagination , it could maybe have been set out with some good bread and local products. We were informed that a breakfast chef is starting soon which should brighten things up.
Room was spacious very tastefully furnished and decorated. Staff very helpful.

Upgraded country pub with pleasantly surprising size of room. Dinner in the pub restaurant was good.
It would have been a good idea to send instructions on where the car park was prior to arrival as it is very much hidden away around the back.
I booked the property because of the price and proximity to the event I was attending the next day. When I arrived I was blown away by the George Inn it was lovely very cosy and full of old character and charm, it’s set in a beautiful little village on the edge of Dartmoor and I will definitely be back.
An excellent room of character. Clean , comfortable bed.
The continental breakfast was mediocre.
Great old building in a great location
The external look of the building is tired , the residents entrance is littered with cigarette ends and weeds and does nothing for the first impression
Was a little disappointed that we didn't get a cooked breakfast, the options for breakfast was just toast and fruit and yogurt But we did enjoy the room and the evening meal was very lovely
Breakfast was a let down , I understand that in winter months you do not do Breakfast I wasn't aware of this till after I booked the stay on booking.com We stayed on valentines day so it was a special weekend and a cooked breakfast is what I thought we would get when I booked the stay
We have stayed previously so new what to expect and once again enjoyed our stay
We did not have breakfast. Staff were very friendly & helpful. Evening meal was very good.
Comfortable, central, staff great and bed comfortable with walk in shower
Nothing
Lovely room, modern and clean.
A cooked breakfast would have been nice.
Lovely pub, good food, comfortable and very clean room.
Would of preferred a room with windows rather than sky lights.
Lovely room with amazing shower and extremely comfortable bed.
No cooked breakfast on the Saturday morning or Sunday morning, only toast or yoghurt, we had been informed by email a week before our stay about the breakfast, but we still paid the full price for the stay.
Lovely staff , very clean and tidy great food and bedrooms excellent with powerful showers.
The mattress on bed was sagging in middle in rm 5, likely needs to be renewed!
100% perfect
Great location Very friendly and helpful staff Room warm and bed comfy Lovely white fluffy towels Fresh bottles of drinking water each day Room very clean and plenty of room Great shower - water hot and powerful Can’t fault the room at all
The communal areas ie: the pub areas are very basic Very much a locals pub But everyone friendly just a bit rowdy Breakfast was ‘continental’ as not doing full English at this time of year (February) we were warned in advance However we did expect more variety eg ham and cheese But it was just packets of cereal, bread for toast and jam Some pain au chocolat in wrappers and fruit (bananas and apples) we breakfasted just after 9 and no fruit left on one of our mornings So breakfast could be improved Evening meals very basic but great service from waiting staff We ate there on one eve them found local pubs doing much better food with more choice Friday night was live music Very loud and could be heard clearly in our room We were warned ahead of our stay and it didn’t really bother us but is a point to note Music was pretty decent tho
Very clean and comfortable stay.
All good
Smoker's area near the entrance
Excellent breakfast, good choice, generous portions
Good food
Very friendly staff and accommodating. We arrived on our cycles in the pouring rain (arrived Thursday 7th August 2025) - Hannah behind the bar checked to see if we could access our room early and we could which was wonderful. Our cycles were safely stored. Dinner in the bar was served by friendly courteous staff. The room (Rm 5) was perfect - we slept with the sound of the village church bells chiming softy in the background. Breakfast was a delight and again the most friendly of George Team Members helped us secure our booking for our return - thank you Kelly. Looking forward to our return on our way back to North Devon. We’d highly recommend the George.
Can’t really think of anything
Location was ideal Breakfast was very good
Nothing
The food was excellent. Best veggie burger I’ve had in a pub. Breakfast was also excellent with a good choice for veggies. Staff were friendly.
Unfortunately, we were there on a very hot night and our room was like an oven, the fan provided was too noisy to sleep with it on. The fire alarm went off during the night. There were no staff on the premises, and none of the emergency numbers given were answered. One of the guests managed to disable the alarm whilst another contacted the fire service. I would have expected an explanation from the staff in the morning and maybe even an apology, but neither happened.
It was lovely. Good facilities and location for our needs
Disappointed about the car parking - when we arrived the car park was full, however plenty of on street parking - just would have preferred off street as per the advert.
loved the welcome, and everyone was happy to help . The room was as expected for the price
Our room was as expected but there was a loud noise from the kitchens which we were not alerted to before hand . This was uncomfortable and I wish we had been told about this sos we could make a better choice of where we were going to book
Great pub , very friendly staff the room was just beautiful & facilities provided perfect 👌. The food was delicious.
Nothing
Breakfast was lovely, staff very nice.
Pub shut approx 7 pm on Sunday, even for patrons, no food served Sunday evening.
Gorgeous building beautifully presented, great food at decent prices.
Could do with a mattress upgrade
