A little out of the way for our ultimate destination but well rewarded with a comfortable room and friendly and efficient staff, there is a good and vey popular , and quality resturant and we regretted we had not arrived a few hours earlier to enjoy it , but ours plans didn’t allow it, looking at the food diners had it made us envious , the breakfast the next morning made up for this , lovely choice, well prepared and cooked, and included in the room rate 😊 we visited the village store across the street which is a wonderful example of the best of village shops , worth visiting too.
Parking is on the street or in front of the village shop or there is a village car park close by, we arrived after dark and it was busy ( it’s has a good and popular resturant) and for some reason there was no lighting ( an electrical fault orrgais) and the entrance doors not obvious , a small inconvenience
From start to finish great service and a very high standard of food
The breakfast, lunch and dinner were all excellent. In fact everything was superb from beginning to end. Peter and staff did an excellent job- nothing for too much to make my stay comfortable and memorable. I have visited previously and hopefully would again. I would recommend this establishment to anyone! All Excellent!!
Absolutely nothing - all is perfect as is
The Royal Oak is a traditional country pub in a picturesque village in Royal County of Berkshire. I very much enjoyed my hearty Sunday dinner of roast lamb and roast vegitables. My room was spacious and comfortable and my breakfast of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs was excelent. This is a very good place to stay if you are going to visit the Royal Berkshire Shooting Ground.
food was fantastic and our room was quite big (I think the biggest available)
rooms not easy to cool down (no ac, but we didn't expect this in an old building), but one of the windows didn't open properly so difficult to get a through-draught:( there was a fan provided though. carpeted rooms, which I always dislike - laminate floors so much more hygenic.
In a lovely area and setting
Food, bar area, restaurant & setting.
Waited 20 miniutes for hot water for a morning shower - it has nothing to do with the age of the property as the narrative explained within the room documents - the HWS needs updating. PS I work in the building services sector and live in an18th century property.
Mooi, gezellige kamer
Niks
Location decor food.
Draught Beer was awful, particularly the Guinness
Character and charm soaked into this pub in a pretty village.
The staff were delightful and so helpful. The food was delicious. Very pleasant friendly atmosphere.
All very good, bedroom was nice, it was extremely hot the day we visited and room had an electric fan but an air con unit would have been great. The restaurant was excellent you could eat inside or outside.
The room 8 Cottage - the rear garden was a little unkept and the ashtray had not been emptied. But having the garden space was great. the front to the cottages could be improved with some potted plants next to the door.

We stayed in the separate lodge on the ground floor with access to a secure garden which suited us well with a large dog A lovely room with a very large well equipped bathroom Good surroundings and an interesting village
Some noise from the nearby M4 motorway can be heard in the village and the garden of our room. It was very hot weather, and we would have benefitted from air conditioning
Lovely property in a great village location
Stayed for one night for a work event the next day. The property is absolutely beautiful, staff were all friendly and attentive. Breakfast was included in the prices, but I didn't partake, I wasn't hungry. The room was absolutely gorgeous (I stayed in the Winchester) decor was relaxing, spacious and comfortable.
The only issue is not having aircon, but the hotel never said they did, so I was fully aware of this when booking. Unfortunately it was a heatwave and thunderstorm, so quite hot!
Didn’t like to be cheated - charged for the room on booking, charged for the same room on checking out - no offer of refund- poor show- will take if further. Don’t know how many hotels I have booked with you, but this will be the last…
A fantastic place we’ve stayed at numerous times. Great staff, food and drink. The room had everything you need and was quiet.
Staff great food and drink amazing, room 9 fantastic
The ONLY thing! Butter at breakfast rock solid, couldn't butter toast
The breakfast was amazing, and the staff were excellent especially Audrey
Maybe the garden would have done with a bit of attention
The room was unique comfortable and peaceful. Beautiful
Nothing
The setting, atmosphere & friendly staff.
The interior design.
Beautiful, cozy, great food and location
The beds. For two, too small, somehow the edges of the mattress were curved downwards and that made it difficult for us ( two couples in two different rooms had the same situation ) to sleep comfortably. A real shame as they looked so comfortable and we enjoyed everything else so much!
Lovely venue, fantastic room, food amazing. Excellent value

Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was excellent.
At check-in staff member appeared under pressure and had to summon another member of staff to complete the process, albeit your system crashed and check-in could not be effected online.
Lovely room with separate sitting area; comfortable bed; spotless, large bathroom; quality breakfast, excellent service.
Thick dust on the bedroom ornaments isn’t good for my asthma. Dinner wasn’t worth the money- tough, dry meat ( cooked in a slow cooker?) , tasteless, hard biscuits on the dessert.
Lovely setting with nice rooms and good restaurant. Very pleasant
Beautiful room, clean and very, very comfortable. Staff were helpful and answered all my questions. Would definitely stay again.
Very minor suggestions - the WiFi in the room didn't work. This was not ideal as I need to work. Whilst I was told the WiFi works in the pub, I needed the privacy for calls. Would also suggest a sign for guests to put in the door if they do not wish to have the cleaning service.
Great stay the pub is lovely with loads of room and the village is cute. All staff were amazing and the local beer was outstanding also the best breakfast I have had in a long time .

Lovely old inn with red brick and tiled floors. Spotlessly clean room. Really helpful staff who went the extra mile. Good food. Excellent value for money.
Beautiful places in lovely countryside. Room comfortable
Quite noisy from other rooms and people outside in garden
lovely room. in a lovely old building. dinner and breakfast both good. staff friendly and professional
bar was a bit understaffed that afternoon / evening
Ontbijt was perfect, er kon een keuze gemaakt worden en alles was goed geregeld
Alles was goed.
Great place to stay. Lovely room with lots of space. Pub was really nice with good dinner and lots of choice at breakfast. Nothing was too much for the staff. Would highly recommend staying here.
Hot water was on and off but it is an old building so to be expected and warned in the welcome pack so no problem.
The standard of decoration was lovely and exceptionally clean. Loved the rural location.
Lack of soundproofing in the room. E has someone above us and heard all their movements, toilet activities and snoring through the night.
Great attentive staff. Wonderful, clean, spacious room. Excellent food.

Very comfortable bed, large bathroom, amazing breakfast, friendly staff, easy close public parking, a lovely deep bath plenty of hot water, good bathroom products.
Very picky. but would have enjoyed a larger TV with more options, only terrestrial channels. A reading light would be appreciated as the bedside lamps didn't give adequate light for comfortable reading. Difficulty with both bath and sink plugs, got stuck and took a long time to get out, but didn't want to bother the staff as I managed it and anyway I would have had to get dressed if someone was to come to my room 😆 but a lovely stay and I would return.
Room good size and clean
The stay was let down by the very poor service. I stay in lots of hotels and pubs this was the worst for service
Clean room, comfortable bed. Friendly staff good food.
Surprised that hair dryer not supplied. As there was shampoo and conditioner, I assumed a hair dryer would be available. I did ask a member of staff and was told that indeed not supplied.
Lovely hotel, restaurant and bar. Relaxing vibe even though it was busy.
Lovely homely feel, tastefully furnished, in vibrant village centre. Staff very helpful, excellent room and facilities and very good food.
Nothing!
The staff, especially Rory (helpful & superbly drole) Pretty village but with a faint a humm of the nearby motorway
Most of the dining is in an orangery bit which more of a conservatory - more IKEA than rustic charm of an old pub. Was expecting a culvert delight but supper was pub fair.
The room is separate from the inn which is nice and private with your own entrance, the bathroom is lovely and spacious and well appointed. The property was clean and tidy. The food is priced on the higher side but is very good. Breakfast was also lovely with our dog being allowed in the restaurant with us which is rare so we enjoyed that.
one of the reasons we chose this inn was because it is advertised it has a electric charging point for the car and when we checked in we were told it is not there anymore and has been taken out. The outside patio area does not have any lights so when you are taking the dog out to the area you cannot see anything.
Lots of character, lovely location and super attentive staff

Great food, friendly staff
Room was spacious. Bathroom clean. Breakfast very good. Checked in just before 10pm on the evening of our first night and this wasn’t a problem for the staff on duty that evening.
Pillows too soft. More explanation of the food options at breakfast would have been helpful.
The breakfast was excellent. Plenty of choice. Loved the location. Very pretty village.
Staff very friendly and the food was wonderful especially the salmon and steak. 🏆
Position Staff Dog friendly very
Food wasn’t as good as previously
Gorgeous looking property both inside and out. Nicely decorated for Christmas. Fabulous breakfast included in room price. Comfy bed.
We struggled to get the shower at the right temperature but realise it is an old property.

Beautiful property and such great service. Peter gave us some advice for wine pairing again, which was perfect. We love to stay here. Easy for Newbury and into Berkshire. The chefs are brilliant and the menu has something for everyone. This is our favourite place to stay in the area. Thanks again for making us so welcome

Wonderful find. From check in to check out, the team were so lovely & helpful. The breakfast was one of the best I have ever had, in fact dinner was fab too. The room was beautifully decorated, so clean and comfortable. Will definitely be back.
Cannot find any fault!
Lovely country village location. Quiet. Country trail walks. Amazing staff who sincerely wanted you to enjoy your stay and went out of their way to accommodate. Great food. Lovely garden. Was planning 3 day stayed and then added 2 more days. I didn’t want to leave!

Located in a beautiful village. Property has parking close by and is located in the heart of the village, close to the village shop and other independent businesses. The property is well maintained and the rooms nicely decorated and equipped. The restaurant, food and quality were excellent. The staff professional and friendly.
Very comfortable room, good breakfast and dinner

Areas to consider
Cleanliness
9/10Generally praised (rooms described as gorgeous and bathrooms very large/well equipped). Minor issues reported such as an unemptied ashtray and a slightly unkept rear garden for one cottage stay.
Service
9.6/10Consistently positive mentions: staff described as delightful, helpful and attentive; specific praise for named staff (Audrey) and repeated comments about great, friendly service.
Location
9.5/10Strongly positive: picturesque village setting, easy access west of London, pleasant surroundings and described as a 'hidden gem' and great village location multiple times.
Room Quality
9.2/10Rooms repeatedly described as luxurious, stylish and spacious with excellent bathrooms; some comments about heat in rooms and suggestions that air conditioning would be welcome.
Amenities
8.8/10Good amenities overall (excellent bar, restaurant and breakfast included for many). Detractors include no air conditioning in hot weather, a hot water delay reported once and issues with beer lines/draught quality.
Value for Money
8.3/10Mixed signals: some guests called it great value, but notable negative incidents (being charged twice, and a guest mentioning cost per room) lowered perceived value.
Food and Beverage
9.3/10Food/restaurant receives frequent high praise (exceptional food, fantastic restaurant and breakfast). Minor negatives: draught beer quality (Guinness/beer lines) and one comment about very hard butter at breakfast.
Overall Experience
9.1/10Overall very positive guest sentiment with many 'fantastic', 'great stay' and 'beautiful' comments; isolated service/value incidents and heat/no-AC issues tempered some experiences.
