Everything could use the pool and hot tub without crowding room was nice and clean close to the beach everyone was very nice.

Room was small. The trail to the beach ended steeply and was difficult for my husband and I to go down with our bad knees.

Breakfast was good, basic scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, MYO waffles. Muffins, assorted breads, yogurt, fresh fruit, cereal. Coffee available 24 hrs. Stayed in tower building king bed ocean view. Large room with pull out couch.Easy access to beach, indoor/outdoor pool. Private balcony. Location was excellent. Staff was extremely helpful and courteous.

Can’t beat a free breakfast. Wonderful to be able to walk right onto the beach. Beds were comfortable. Kitchenette was good and very helpful. Free coffee 24/7 is also pretty cool.

Bathroom was a little tight. Bathtub looked a little dated. Paint on the ceiling of the indoor pool was peeling and really could use a paint job.

The staff were prompt taking care of issues. There was a problem with the AC unit making a loud noise and they replaced it immediately. Someone vomited on sidewalk and they cleaned it up promptly.

There were a few bugs in the room. Probably unavoidable.

Best part is location with a beach and close to ocean. Also two swimming pools and hot tub for those who doesn’t like salt water. Breakfast was very good with a variety of food. Cleaning service did their duty every day. Plenty of restaurants around with short walking distance.

Water in the ocean should be a bit warmer 🤣

We love the location. Love, the fact that there was an indoor pool and an outdoor pool along with the indoor hot tub. We really enjoyed the gazebo on the walk to the beach.

The only complaint I would have is that the Internet Wi-Fi was not very good, and that we missed having a smart TV to access our streaming services

The breakfast was fabulous, lots of different options, cozy seating, convenient location. We loved the easy beach access as well as easy access to town. Staff was really friendly and kind. We really appreciated being allowed to leave car in the parking lot to go to the beach before our check in time.

We had a big family with lots of kids, few more towels would have been lovely.

Laa habitaciones eran decentes, limpias y con camas bastante cómodas, pero esperaba vistas a la playa (anunciaban viatas a las dunas), y las ventanas daban a un pasillo al que debías salir para contemplar las vistas. La piscina es de un tamaño decente y tiene otra interior con jacuzzi. El desayuno igual de limitado y pobre que en cualquier cadena hotelera de tres estrellas.

For a one night stay, it was great. Friendly staff when we arrive and depart. Very knowledgeable about the area and where to find things. Beach access was wonderful, with no stairs or too high of a hill to climb over.

Just one suggestion: if they could add a foot shower underneath the original beach shower, it would be a great option for guests who walk on the beach.

The overall facility was nice. The staff was nice. The location was nice. The rooms were nice sized. The style of the rooms were nice. The main lobby was beautiful. The pools and access to the beach was nice and convenient. There was a good variety for breakfast, only thing is it it is the same choice every other day.

The fact that booking.com charged me twice and it has been a hassle to get my money back. The rooms were nice but we never got the setup for the pull out bed like we were suppose to and it took 3 times to get the house cleaning done to get fresh towels and we were out the 2nd night and had to use beach towels. The shower didn't not work good. Oh and you have trouble carrying things upstairs get a room in the tower it is the only one with elevator. The main housing unit definitely needs a elevator. The washing machine and dryer will take your money. Be careful with the AC unit it goes by wifi and and any small thing with the plug or outlet will knock it off and we came back to a room that was 80 degrees but they did get maintenance to come fix it. Overall it was a nice place.

The older section that we stayed in, did not have an elevator. But it was only two floors.

Issue with room air conditioner - notified front office. Maintenance pounded on door when “do not disturb” sign was on door due to family members not feeling well. Maintenance continued to argue when I told him it was not a good time, he then stated obviously there was no air conditioning issue. Needed to contact front office several times concerning guest smoking at our end unit door instead of designated smoking areas.

Pool was nice , indoor and out! Beautiful property. Well kept. Staff seen all day cleaning, working on whatever, kept clean towels and beds made everyday

The location of our room was facing the ocean and we could just step down and walk a bit over the dune to get there, so right at the beach. Hot tub and pool were also great to relax.

Staff partially cleaned out room, on one of the days and did not make the bed. Breakfast was just ok, nothing particularly to like there.

Have been going to Shutters on the Banks for many years - even before they were called Shutters! This place use to be Colony IV by the Sea. We have only stayed in the Tower building so not sure about the rooms on the pool side. We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of June. The rooms are clean - I am the type of person that checks everything in the room after I check in, and uses my own sani wipes for the remote control, handles, etc. The room has a coffee station, microwave, and small refrigerator. Perfect for our two gallons of water. We had a room with two Queen Beds this time - room 227. This is on the second floor. There are stairs AND an elevator. The bathroom is small but very functional for two people. The Ac worked fine and was very cold when needed. The beds are another story though. My husband am I could not sleep in the same bed as the one closer to the balcony door literally had a deep indentation on one side. He wound up sleeping on that one and had a back ache every morning. The bed squeaked and made weird noises every time he turned/moved. The balcony had a view of the dunes and a sliver of the the ocean. We could also see people walking back and forth from the beach, passing the gazebo where there is an outside shower. The view, for me, was fine. I didn't mind not seeing the ocean as we could hear it fine. The resort has a corn hole game set up which is fun. This time, we used the pool and hot tub and everything was great. There is an indoor and outdoor pool. They also provide towels at the pool. There is a restroom near the pool. The front desk folks were absolutely wonderful - great customer service and very attentive. The breakfast is the standard make your own waffles, eggs, bacon, bagels, muffins, yogurt, juices, and coffee (decaf and regular). This would have been a perfect trip except for the bed. I sent an email in response to the receipt that they sent me, but never heard back. I asked to speak with Ron, specifically (manager). I was hoping to talk to him before posting anything. Overall, a good place to stay but needs some minor updates. I would stay again but only in one of their king sized bed rooms. We have had these rooms in the past and the mattress's have been excellent.

We love staying at Shutters! This was our third stay and we already booked our stay for next year. Very clean facilities, friendly staff, delicious breakfast, and perfect spot on the beach!

We had a wonderful stay at Shutters on the Banks! The hotel was clean, comfortable, and in a perfect beachfront location. The staff was friendly and welcoming, especially Kira, who went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. Her kindness and excellent customer service really stood out. We’d definitely stay here again!

The two queen bed rooms are tiny with old carpeting and have no sunlight because the windows open in the corridor where guests walk to their rooms. The property was advertised as a 4star hotel so it was disappointing.

Location is fantastic. Ocean views from top two floors are worth the up-charge, especially if you want to catch a sunrise.

Mattresses are on the soft side, but aside from that, great accommodations. Basically right across the street from the Wright Brothers National Monument.

Nothing g as far as I was concerned. The view from our room could have been better but we didn't pay for one of the upgraded rooms. Balcony would have been great.

The location was absolutely perfect! The breakfast is low-grade unhealthy for the most part. The room service is lacking attention to detail. Mostly, towels were refreshed and garbage taken out. Sheets changed once which was fine. That was about it. We were there over a week and not once was the toilet tub or sink cleaned. I cleaned my sink out as I brought Clorox wipes with me, but I did not bring a toilet brush or cleaning supplies. The price was reasonable. The Dune walking from the ocean back up to the accommodations is unfit for many people as we watched people struggle. A staircase might be a good idea. I had to clean all of the pans because particleboard was broken underneath the cupboard and nobody bothered to clean it up. There are cobwebs the pictures and the rug should either be totally taken out and replaced with flooring or at least vacuum vacuumed.

The property was quiet, very clean. We also really like the mat leading up the dunes down to the beach! Our ocean view room was beautiful!

The only thing we didn’t like was the area where you get on the elevator was very hot!

I'm a 78-year-old disabled veteran, and my stay at Shutters on the Banks in Kill Devil Hills was a very disappointing experience. I booked through Expedia and was assigned Room 202 on the second floor. I have a documented back condition (I also have NC handicapped plates), so a supportive mattress isn't a luxury for me-it's a necessity. Unfortunately, the mattress in this room was in very poor condition: overly soft, worn out, and completely lacking support. After just one night, I woke up on May 12, 2026, in significant pain. It was clear the room was not suitable for my medical needs. I respectfully requested to cancel the remainder of my stay and asked for a prorated refund of the $1,358.67 I had paid, along with the release of a $50 incidental hold on my debit card. Management denied my request. What made matters worse was how dismissive the response felt. I was told the mattress is a Sealy Posturepedic and only two years old-as if that somehow outweighed the actual condition of the bed and the pain it caused (photo attached). Brand and age don't matter when the mattress is no longer supportive. I'm sharing this so others-especially seniors, veterans, or anyone with back or mobility issues-are aware. I expected basic understanding and customer care given the circumstances, but that was not my experience here.

Location was great. Quick walk to the beach. Amenities were nice as well. Kids enjoyed the indoor pool as well as the breakfast.

The location is great, right by the beach and easy to find, also, very easy to get in and out of their parking lot to go grab dinner or explore nearby attractions.

The walls are paper thin, one can hear their neighbors and if one happens to be on the lower floor, upstairs neighbors will sound like elephants. The pool is much smaller than what it looks like in pictures. And it’s in a totally separate building which was inconvenient since there is not even a proper changing room with a shower and a dryer. Also, the spa isn’t monitored and is at all times full of kids.

We had a great time at Shutters even with the whacky wind and chilly temps! Rooms were clean and stocked. Location was perfect for us in the dune view room! Breakfast was a nice bonus and my daughter loved the indoor pool!

The doors are very thin with the joining rooms. We could hear whole conversations. Nothing really crazy to us but may bother others.

The front desk employee acted as if we were disturbing her when checking in. Not very welcoming. There was only 1 mirror and it was in the bathroom. I think there should be a full length mirror somewhere else in the room. Also, can't use streaming services on TV.

The room was ocean view as booked. It was very roomy and clean. It was nice to use the balcony. We preferred not to be disturbed and housekeeping honored our request. Every interaction with staff was pleasant and you could tell people wanted to be helpful.

Not their fault but flies get in from the balcony, just be prepared or bring a fly swatter, not a deal breaker at all, the place is worth staying. Another thing that can't be helped is other guests and perhaps they don't realize, but every time someone moved their balcony chair it seemed to echo into the room, not a problem if it is not 5am. Then there are the guests that are door slammers, they let the doors slam. I had a foot issue so the hill to the beach was a challenge but if I did not have the foot problem it would not have been an issue.

Nice room, beautiful views. Breakfast is mid… housekeeping terrible don’t expect service… flys flys flys… bring your swatter they are driving us crazy.

Absolutely would not recommend the office was “closed” early and left phone number to call for check in on door called number several times with no answer it was almost midnight we had to go find another hotel room because no one would answer I already had paid and made reservations called the office next morning lady said manager would be returning my call to get a refund I have yet to hear back from them it’s been a week!
