What can I say about this resort? It is definitely an atypical choice for the Maldives. While it retains all the characteristics of a private island, it borders a local island that houses the airport. Its predominantly Italian management gives it a warm, familiar feel that easily caters to our tastes. The food is excellent, and the friendliness of the entire staff is top-notch. Many team members even speak a bit of Italian, which is a great help for Italian guests who might not be used to speaking English.
One of the features that makes it truly one of a kind is the ability to grab a complimentary bicycle and head over to the local village whenever you like—perhaps for a few small errands. For instance, I picked up cans of soft drinks that aren't sold in Italy anymore, among other things. The only minor drawback is that you practically can’t explore beyond the airport area because there is no road leading to the far end of the island. Judging at least by satellite views, that long stretch of beach would be lovely to visit.
The only real flaw—if you can call it that—is that in the mornings, you notice quite a bit of plastic waste washing ashore from elsewhere. However, the resort staff cleans it up immediately, so it causes zero disturbance to the guests. It’s just sad to witness how much plastic now pollutes the Indian Ocean.
Like almost all resorts in the Maldives nowadays, prices tick upward every week, driven partly by taxes and partly by high demand since rooms are constantly booked out. It’s a real shame, as this trend will inevitably shorten the average vacation length and shift the clientele toward one-off visitors rather than returning guests. Even with that caveat, a solid 9+ out of 10 to this wonderful resort.

Rooms with a marvelous view towards the sea. Also like the fact that all facilities are available like scuba/snorkling. The hotel is eco-friendly in all aspects.

In my experience, 🤩 vacations can sometimes feel like a test of "what is your current demand, and what are you looking for to be impressed," including all the very common daily variations of that. 😉
At The Barefoot, you just relax and enjoy your day-to-day stay as it comes, 😎 complemented by the great food and activities.
You do not even need flip-flops 🩴 during your entire stay. 🤩
✅ We loved the staff team and the pleasant, discreet surroundings. 🙏If you are looking for butler services, stay away... though surely you will be served with all your needs anyway!
✅ The atmosphere was excellent for us! 🤩If you are looking for classy and glamorous days, stay away... luckily, it is not a glossy magazine location. 😍
✅ We were pleased with the silence of the habitat. 🤩🍀If you are looking for family entertainment, stay away... luckily, there is none! 😍
✅ For me, it was true recovery time. 👍If you are looking for athletic or endurance activities, stay away... or just go for intense swimming 🏊♂️ and beach running 🏃♂️ sessions.

Reviewed Mar 4, 2026The Barefoot Eco Hotel is a wonderful place for anyone seeking relaxation and disconnection. The resort offers its guests an impressively thoughtful reduction to meaningful basics; back to the truth and core being. Every single details matters. I personally looked exactly for a place like this and highly recommend.
The well trained, professional team — in all areas of the hotel — made my stay perfect.
The evening buffet is excellent, very high quality, and fully met my healthy eating requirements. The fact on non-alcoholic servings, no TV availability and no animations has been a big plus for me. The gym equipment did not meet my expectations. It is outdated, inadequately equipped, and, in my opinion, does not fit in with the otherwise high overall concept of the hotel.
The professional organization of the yoga classes is particularly noteworthy. I booked a two-week daily privat session with the yoga master Sagar (a certified yoga instructor and therapist). In addition to practicing yoga, I learned a lot of new things about breathing techniques, meditation, and different styles of yoga. I'm very grateful for this experience. The daily morning yoga classes are tailored to the participants' level and are a great way to start the day.
Last but not least, a relaxing massage at the SPA perfects the day in this paradise.
The Barefoot Eco Hotel is a lovely place to re-energize; I highly recommend.

Reviewed Feb 18, 2026The hotel is situated in a remote island, without any other resorts or people, so expect highest levels of tranquility, the lack of other islands around also means no overcrowded snorkeling spots, no loud boats or no speed boats chasing the marine life! The set up is beautiful, with a vast garden, which makes you feel like you are in a jungle, I almost didn't see other guests during the day. Striped by a long white beach with a swimming lagune of transparent turquoise water, the hotel also offers many activities, to discover marine life in a human manner - making sure the guests know how to treat the nature and environment around. I particularly enjoyed the food, especially the fresh raw fish being offered everyday. All the staff was very polite and friendly, making my trip even mor enjoyable. It’s a great compromise, you get to experience the beauty of the Maldives without emptying your wallet!
We thought a detour to the Maledives, coming from Sri Lanka, would be a good idea, as the flight from Colombo to Male is only 55 minutes. Unfortunately, it is quite complicated to get to the hotel - so our trip to the Barefoot Eco Hotel took us one day instead of the anticipated few hours. Also when flying back, we were booked on a flight to Male (because other guests needed to catch an earlier Flight) at 6:00am and hat to spend 5 hours at Male Airport before the departure of our flight back to Europe.
The Beach and architecture is very beautiful. The hotel’s benefit is the breathtaking view and the very polite service staff around the buffet. Also the housekeeping staff was very friendly and our room was always kept clean. In contrast, we experienced poor communication and arrogant behavior and less motivation by two guys from the reception staff, who smiled our questions away in a passiv-aggressive manner.
Still the Maledives profit from a past romantic ideal and narrative of the beauty of marine life. But the reality is sad- mostly dead corals and some lonely fishes gathering around. The hotel‘s dive shop offers diving and snorchling tours by fuel driven Speed-boat (not eco!). It seems as if time stood still somewhen in the 1980ies, where tainning fully sun-exposed still was ignored to cause skin cancer. The only ‚eco‘ we observed in the hotel was the soap (instead of shower gel) and biological desinfection against insects and mosquitos as well as instructional videos showing how not to pollute the area with (plastic) garbage and cigarettes. But except that, we did not discover any engagements making the hotel worth to be called ‚eco‘… the served salmon seems to be imported for the tourists, as well as other incredients served. In how far it is ‚eco’ that the owner needs a jetski is also questionable. In other places, hotels and dive centers engage in helping to rebuild/grow reefs and cleaning the ocean from plastic.
Beyond that, we observed many grumpy and unfriendly guests who were acting egocentric and not mindful when approaching the buffet in a ‚me first‘ manner. It got even worse after an italian tourist group arrived and started to block seaside chairs with their beach towels even when not using them.
With such attitude and crowd attrackted, the place is compareable to a common all-inclusive hotel anywhere else in the world. But it is not a 4-star hotel. Only the prices are of a 4-star accomodation.

Reviewed Jan 29, 2026The first morning I woke up way too early, some animal made loud calls- was it a bird or a monkey? Where am I ? The sound of the waves from the nearby sea brought back my memories Ah I’m in the beautiful Maldives staying in a villa all by myself. And was Robinson Cruso really a man or did she just pretend? I bet Freitag adored her...
My daily routine starts with coffee by the beach and a quick dip in the water, followed by my morning yoga practice – some sun salutations, stretching, breathwork and meditation. All of this takes place under the watchful eyes of the villagers in the pictures adorning my outdoor living room.
The clothes I brought from Europe are far too warm and heavy for this climate. Fortunately, the local tailor is highly skilled, and his fabrics and expertise really highlight my figure. And the fresh flowers the room boy places in the vase on my veranda makes me feel truly special.
One of the papayas in my little garden is ripe, and I’ve sprinkled the pieces with fresh lime from the village store. They’ve never tasted so good! The store has everything—from fresh vegetables and local spices to tools and cleaning agents. The ladies there are incredibly friendly; when they see my basket of vegetables and coconut milk, they ask if I’ll be cooking at THE BAREFOOT. Their eyes follow me as I ride back on my bicycle to the resort. The lentil dish I prepare in my little kitchen is decent, but the view of the sea and my feet in the sand make the lunch truly memorable.
Yesterday, I went for a two-dive adventure and saw eagle rays, two stingrays, many sharks, and millions of colorful fish of all sizes. Corals of all shapes are thankfully growing back everywhere. Today, I’ll treat myself to an Ayurvedic massage and enjoy an early bedtime. But before I sleep, I ll take a quick walk on the beach under the beautiful starry sky.
The location was good
The food is cold and not really healthy. The dishes repeat. The spa is too expensive. Yoga classes can not be really called yoga. It’s just some very light gymnastics. Really bad unfortunately !!!!
The worst vacation we have ever experienced. Overpriced.
The journey was unpleasantly long; we even had to wait 5 hours in Malé for the local flight.
For a 4-star hotel, this one is really poor. There was a sewage smell upon arrival, an ugly room, ants and mosquitoes in the room, and even a huge cockroach during our stay! There was no TV in the room and the fridge was not switched on. The shower is not air-conditioned and feels like a steam sauna; insects get in through various gaps, and the tap was loose. The furniture was old, chipped, stained, and shabby, with dirty curtains.
After the hotel staff arbitrarily sprayed the room with some horrible insecticide, it was impossible to stay inside. For the rest of the stay, the terrace smelled terribly of chemicals, making it unusable. As for toiletries, only two small pieces of soap and a small amount of shampoo of unknown composition in a dispenser were provided. The safe did not work.
There are cats in the resort that appear not to receive proper veterinary care. One of the cats had severely scratched, scabbed ears bleeding, most likely due to mange.
On the beach (which is otherwise probably the hotel’s biggest advantage) and in the sea, there was plastic waste. The shallow sea was lifeless, with almost no marine life; we rarely saw even a single fish.
The full board was of rather poor quality, with not enough fruit (only 2, at most 3 kinds of cut fruit, usually watermelon and pineapple), and no fresh fruit juices included. Even coffee was charged extra (except for instant coffee in the room and filter coffee at breakfast). Only water was included, and even that in limited quantities—despite the fact that tap water is not drinkable. During meals, individual food items regularly ran out and it was necessary to wait for them to be refilled.
The inhabited part of the island is neglected, with no greenery at all. It definitely does not invite walks or trips outside the resort. There are only asphalt roads, in some places dusty and full of potholes (including the access road to the resort), bordered on both sides by high, peeling walls behind which ugly, neglected houses huddle.
Overall, I do not recommend this place

Reviewed Dec 16, 2025This is saved by the environmental concept and numerous special measures implemented by the Barefoot Eco Hotel under the superb leadership of Managing Director Raffaella Colleon and her excellent team. With immense effort and warmth of her heart, she successfully manages a piece of paradise on Hanimaadhoo, creating a sense of well-being, making us feel not just like guests, but like friends. Thanks also to Reservations Manager Diksan Wijerathna and Daminda Ranasinghe for our spacious beachfront rooms No. 1 and 2. Cleaned and lovingly tidied twice daily, with views of the white, picturesque beach and the turquoise lagoon, this was also a significant fact in our feeling so comfortable.
Besides the entire wonderful team, I'd like to mention a few names of those who were especially helpful and truly fulfilling every wish. First and foremost, Victor from reception, who organized, planned, and supported us perfectly and took us on numerous activities the hotel offered. Furthermore, Gayan and Mohamed for their friendliness, "our room attendant" Pabel, the attentive waiters Sozib and Parvez and the lovely kitchen team who spoiled us with excellent and a wide selection of food, especially at dinner on the beach. I must also mention Maria, who led an impressive snorkeling tour where we saw turtles and a shark, as well as the speedboat driver who showed us dolphins. Afeef was a great help on our excursion to the neighboring island of Umadhee and Kumaresan and Raj perfectly tailored our appropriate clothing. Most notably Sagar, with his yoga, massage and meditation and Anie, with her spa treatments. They ensured special relaxation, too.
I also like to mention that the island can be explored by bicycle, taxi or hotel van. This allowed us to have more contact with locals. As a former teacher and headmistress, I was particularly impressed by the honorable invitation to the island's school. I thank everyone who made this visit possible. I’m sure, we will remain in contact. Thanks also to the Swiss entrepreneur, Christophe Groh, who founded The Barefoot Eco Hotel in the Maldives and opened it in 2014 with a focus on sustainable tourism and community. We highly recommend it and look forward to returning. Eva, Willi, Maria, and Pepi, December 2025

My partner does not do any water sports so I specifically picked that resort as it had bikes and a gym . Reviewed Oct 30, 2025The Barefoot Eco Hotel is a beautiful and healing place where I have made unforgettable memories and good friends. I arrived after a lot of negative things had happened in my life and staying at the Barefoot was so healing in every way. Nature is amazing, the beach and the ocean are wonderful, the food is great and the buildings are carefully crafted from natural materials, and all of that is fantastic, but what really stands out to me was the staff. Everyone was so kind! I broke a rib and so I wasn’t as active out on the water as other guests, but I had so many healing conversations. The gardeners told me about their activities, the person who looked after my room lent me some ointment for my rib for the duration of my stay, everyone was really kind and open and chatted to me. It’s hard to make a list because everyone was so nice, from the restaurant staff to yoga teacher and massage therapist Anie to the marine biologist Maria and the wonderful Nafiz and Afeef, who guided the snorkelling trips, to the lovely receptionists (Mohamed organised a doctor's appointment for me and was generally so helpful) and the gardeners and the tailors in the shop to the diving centre staff - everyone tried to make my trip so much better! It felt like a family, not a hotel.
The rooms were spacious and cleanly, set in a wonderful areal with palms and all kinds of other plants. Meals are provided in a great hall that is open on all sides and also contains a library, a juice bar and a central multipurpose space where the marine biologist offers talks about marine life and films are shown in the evening. There are also entertainment opportunities like karaoke nights. The infinity pool has a good size because most people swim in the ocean anyway. The beach is wide, long and wonderful, and there are plenty of deckchairs and tables. There is even someone who you can order drinks from at the beach (non-alcoholic because the Maldives are a Muslim country with a strict anti-alcohol policy - but drinks are so creative that even those who enjoy the occasional glass of alcohol won’t miss anything (plus there is a floating bar that you can take the boat to, but I never did)).
In the evenings you can go to the jetty and observe fish and sharks who are attracted by the lights. There are flying foxes and lovely shy birds with a signature call that will accompany you throughout the stay, as well as cheeky ravens who will attempt to steal your breakfast if you’re careless. There is a jungle behind the hotel that is really worth exploring.
There is no TV in the rooms, which I loved, because you are in paradise, so why should you want to watch TV? There is good Wi-Fi reception in your room, in the restaurant and
Mosquitos are carefully and unobtrusively managed by the hotel so that you don’t get stung at all on the premises. I got a few stings when I left the hotel grounds and went into the jungle.
The nearby village is nice; there are a few good cafés (avoid the Break Time though - overpriced and not as good as the other places), the agricultural centre looks very interesting (even though I still haven’t found out if you can also visit it as an individual or only as part of a group), there are a few shops with fresh fruit and everything you could need in daily life. Villagers are very friendly, I even got a lift on a scooter once by a lovely lady.
Great care is taken by the gardeners and other maintenance staff that you can really walk barefoot everywhere on the hotel grounds - leaves and stones are swept aside and the sand is raked so that you have a comfortable experience. It’s so good for your posture! I ended up walking around in my shoes half the time though because I managed to get a sunburn on my feet on one of the first days.
The excursions are really good. Staff are knowledgeable and you are well looked after throughout the trips. If you’re insecure, they look after you especially and help you. Everyone goes above and beyond to help you out. There was a few days towards the beginning of my stay where seas were very rough and a snorkelling trip wouldn’t have been safe, so two of the trips were cancelled, and I really appreciate that they put safety before everything else. Of course they lose out on money for the excursions if they cancel them, and still they did to make sure that everyone was safe.
I was travelling on my own and I felt that staff took extra care to make sure I was well looked after; they took time to chat and made me feel cherished.
The only “bad” aspect about my stay was that I didn’t want to leave! I had originally thought that this would be my trip of a lifetime and the one time I’d be going to the Maldives, but now I desperately want to return as soon as possible and can’t imagine going to any other holiday destination any more. Of course one is always sad to leave after a holiday, but this is different - the Barefoot feels like home and like family and friends. The trip had a big (positive) impact on me as a person and I really need to return. I wish I didn’t live so far away. I’ll need to try to find some deals to be able to go back very soon.

Reviewed Feb 3, 2025I can't emphasize enough how professional the staff were - all of them. They took care of every little detail and made my vacation perfect. This is the kind of place you go if you want to disconnect and take a break... sure, they have plenty of activities, but in the end it's very remote and quiet, which is exactly what I was looking for. The beachfront room was wonderful... the beach itself is spectacular, the food was varied and plentiful and delicious (I already miss it).
Special mention to Deepak and Rana (the cooks/food servers), and especially to Sozib who was the only staff member who took the time to learn my name, and to greet me with a genuine smile and a quick chat every single day.
I didn't bring cash with me, and (embarrassingly) had no way of tipping staff. I enquired at reception if there was some way to do it via card, but I was told that it was not possible. It would be nice if they could offer this possibility as the staff definitely deserve some gratitude.

Reviewed Jan 11, 2025We liked the Barefoot Eco Concept. The venue was private, secluded and easygoing as well as the guests flows, therefore everywhere was very quiet and perfect to completely disconnect and recharge. The plastic-free approach was great for the environment and you could see the effort from everyone to respect the ecosystem and prevent it from over tourism. The beach was lovely, wide and had plenty of space for all the hotel’s guests. The sea was turquoise and you could easily snorkel and enjoy the beautiful ecosystem around. The rooms were spacious and bright, design matched the concept and cleaning service was okay and quick. A special thank to the Restaurant Staff (Sozib, Deepak, Rana, Asaad, Parvat) who was always caring and willing to help throughout the services. The local team who brought you to the boat bar was also super friendly. Variety of food was satisfying and also hours of the services covered the right amount of time. Yoga classes in the morning by Jestine were the perfect way to kick off the day and the gym was pretty good equipped for general trainings. The pool was nice. The WiFi connection was good and allowed us to work remotely and the IT Team was always on top in case of problems. Virginia and Nico from diving and snorkeling were very prepared. One guy at the reception who welcomed us (don’t remember the name, but we arrived the 31.12 at 5pm so you can trace this back to the shift) was nice.
I personally think the experiences were overpriced and not well organized. Bear in mind that being in a local island you are not allowed to be served alcool, it was a nice detox for us, but is good to know in advance (however, they also have a boat bar where you can purchase drinks). Every night, they organized something for the guests (movie night, quiz night, biology class); this was a nice way to entertain guests, but seemed poor and random; with a little more effort from the team could have been done much better. Sometimes, the plastic-free approach seemed an excuse to led you purchasing basic stuff you usually find in the room at the hotel’s shop (ex: cotton buds, matches, etc). Reception service was not up to the standard: the personnel was not always there and usually not able to follow up on your request. Domestic flights are discretionally handled and booked from the hotel without consulting the guests first and imposing very early departure from Hanimadhoo on the day of check-out. You get this information in the afternoon before the day you leave and then you have to hurry in order respect their crazy timeline and end up spending many hours in Male Airpot making the way home lot longer. Didn’t like the approach on WhatsApp before arrival, asking many info about payment and sensitive data.

Reviewed Dec 20, 2024From the very nice welcome at Hanimadhoo airport to the pleasant short journey on the island and the resort itself, we felt very comfortable from the very first day.
The staff were really super friendly and always went out of their way to meet our expectations. The surroundings were simply fantastic. It was an estimated 20 steps from our room directly to the sun lounger on our own beautiful white beach. The water on the first day was like in a bathtub, only even more beautiful and above all more turquoise.
Every day you could book various excursions, which were really very exciting, including snorkeling with turtles or watching dolphins, so in short, the offer was very varied.
The stay in the room was very comfortable, especially the bathroom was very nicely decorated.
Massage, opportunities to work out as well as yoga before breakfast were offered. The crew were just so lovely.

Reviewed May 19, 2024Well, I expected this place to be clean, remote from Male, meaning more beautiful and I am happy I made a choice and came here. Absolutely beautiful.
I booked full board and I don’t regret it. I had a good appetite during my holiday. The hotel times shifts to +1 hr, so prepare to not miss any of the meals. Breakfast 7:45-10:15, lunch 13:00-14:30 and dinner 20:00-21:30.
There is plenty to choose from, vegetables and fruits, every dinner and lunch variety of fish and meat.
For breakfast you can ask eggs and pancakes to be prepared.
I really liked that it was not many people in hotel and it felt very cool. Sunbeds on the beach, take any. I had a double room with patio and I just had the one closest to the beach. Perfect!
Bins for plastic and paper everywhere on the territory.
I saw someone complained of going to the bar and get a drink, I thought that would be a problem but in reality it wasn’t. We could give the order and drinks were delivered. Anyways walking 2-3 minutes to the bar and to enjoy and view is never an issue.
The area is in the forest so there are lots of trees and palm trees. I felt similar like in Bali in Ubud.
Water is provided in the room, tea and coffee sachets.
There are plenty of excursions provided by diving center, choose and go.
I liked that hotel provided 2 times a week a complimentary snorkelling trip. Yoga in the morning is also free and you just need to make an effort to wake up)
I didn’t really use a swimming pool as I was more attracted to the ocean but pool is nice.
There is no alcohol as it is not allowed but there is a little boat with boat bar and you can go there in the evening at 18:00 and 21:30 and enjoy a drink or two or three.
I also used laundry facilities.
First I need to say these things which I am going to say are not bad just some things you need to consider.
Pay only in dollars. Dollar note starting from 2006 and younger. Not cut, not folded and would be perfect to take fresh notes. Male bank is very strict so hotel depends entirely on that.
Gym has few bikes, treadmills 2 and two benches and some weights. If you a gym shark prepare for that. And I believe it is good because some hotels of the same price don’t have anything at all.
In the room there is no amenities like shower gel and et cetra. Only soap. I had mine anyways so I didn’t suffer ahah

Reviewed Feb 28, 2024Amazing location on a perfect white beach, with lovely swimming in the sea. The resort is attractive and well run - mostly German/Swiss/Italian clientele. Staff are friendly. Very good snorkelling and manta excursions. Delicious buffet dinners. Good yoga classes. Very impressive checkout: they sent baggage ahead to airport and obtained boarding passes for us before we'd even left the hotel.
Some niggles, which should be better at this price point:
- Poor selection at breakfast buffet
- Extra charge (approx 15USD per day) for snorkelling equipment on top of expensive snorkelling trip - to rent their equipment for a week would cost more than to buy it new, so bring your own
- No iron available to guests
- Uncomfortably hard beds
- Most of the gym equipment didn't work
NB The hotel will not accept Maldivian currency. I was told by the hotel rep in Malé to change money before flying to the island, which I then couldn't use! Pretty scandalous really.

Reviewed Jan 17, 2024Bed is big, shower is fine. Sunny day beach is excellent, snorkeling as well. water is transparent, no urchins, daisy parrot fish and unicorn fish was really impressive. BBQ was great, torso of lobster was around 40cm. Maldivian massage was explained as deep relaxation program, and it was literally deep relaxation program. I fell into sleep while massage.
Confusing hotel time, slow internet, many mosquitoes. Bar is far away from the hotel, you need to make 30 min trip with car and boat to drink just 1 glass of alcohol. Dinner time is too short so all the guests gather at the same time and hotel doesn't have enough tables to cover all the guests in new year time, so some guest need to wait until table become available. This is very stressful situation under hungry state, and it's double standard as well because paying same money. Gym facility is old school. The room was explained as soundproof in Booking.com but when I played music in the room not so loudly in daytime, hotel asked me to put less volume because neighbors are complaining about that. That's not soundproof. Sometime electricity stop without notification and if it happened, water stops as well. Sunset was like bronze medal.

Attention car l’accès à l’île est compliqué, il y a très peu de vols domestiques par jour et l’attente à l’aéroport de Male peut donc être très longue (environ 6h à l’aller et au retour pour nous).

Reviewed Apr 9, 2018I went to Maldives at the end of March, to find a little peace and quiet after working way too much. Barefoot Eco Hotel turned out to be the perfect place to regain my energy. It's quite small, so not too many people around. At lunchtime, the whole beach could be almost empty, and I got the whole lagoon to myself. It was amazing. Obviously, not the right choise for someone looking for evening action. (There is no alcohol on the island / resort either, but you can get a drink on board a bar boat nearby.)
Food was good, but in that heat, I wasn't too hungry. I drank the juice bar alcohol-free drinks instead, super good! Not included in the half board/ full board, though. Everything in the resort is quite expensive, so be prepared for that. Also, take small dollar notes for tips.
The only tourist resort in Maldives located on an island where also locals live, it was a big bonus to get to visit the nearby village too, and see some local people and buildings. Village is small, about 1000 inhabitants, but has a few shops that sell groceries and souvenirs, and they'll take dollars. There are some cafes too, I never got to those, but apparently they would be worth a visit.
I stayed on top floor of one of the beach villas, and had a perfect sea view from my room. This was my first time to Maldives, but I will be back. Very likely even to Barefoot Hotel, and I would definitely also recommend it to my friends.

Reviewed Dec 20, 2017The Barefoot Eco Hotel is an amazing place in the Maldives!
It's not your traditional Maldivian resort, since it is situated in an island with a village (normally resorts are located in private islands). This adds greatly to the whole experience! If you are the type of person that likes to learn about the local culture of the places where you travel, this is a perfect combination.
The hotel does a lot of work to support the local community, such as hiring locals, providing free training for people to work in the tourist industry, tours into the local village, cooking shows hosted by locals and others.
The hotel also tries to minimize its footprint in the environment. For instance, the hotel doesn't sell any drinks in plastic bottles.
The location is stunning! You clearly get this sense of being off the grid, in a tropical place. We saw turtles, harmless sharks, different kind of rays (manta, eagle, sting), tropical fishes and dolphins. The hotel offers different daily programs to get up close to these, as well as to visit nearby historical places.
The food provided is delicious! It's a mix of Italian with influences of local cuisine. On Friday's, is Maldivian night and you can have a full Maldivian dinner experience.
Finally the staff makes the whole experience 5 stars! Everyone, from the reception, to the restaurant to the diving center was friendly and helpful!
We spent there almost two weeks and had the time of our lives. We will definitely return, if we have the chance.

Room: good hotel rooms. However, AC had to be fixed, had always to order extra towels, lights were out of order...but everything was fixed quickly... Wi-Fi is almost inexistent!
Staff: all staff is very friendly no matter what they do. The staff at the reception was specially very careful, friendly, quick and professional. My special thanks to you Sara!
Dive center: very professional, knowledgeable and friendly people. Learned with them the Enriched Air Diver speciality and also many tricks and good tips to improve my diving. They definitely know the surroundings and understand a lot about diving! Also act very responsive and careful towards all divers.
Food: breakfast is not special. Meals are generally healthy and standard. There are variations between vegetables, soup, pasta, rice, chicken, local fish (mostly tuna) and local spicy dishes. Everything cooked very creatively and tastes good enough. It is a shame the poor variety and low quality of food offered in the bar (shame shame shame to offer an industrialised chicken pasta box for 12 USD!! It is awful and costs max 2 Euro in Europe!! Reviewed May 11, 2017If you are looking for a place to scuba dive / snorkel in a quite and peaceful resort in the Maldives, this is probably the best place to go. It is a bit further out than the other resorts, but it's worth the trek if you are looking for a quite place. The hotel is not very big and therefore not many guests overcrowding the areas. The food from the buffet is varied and delicious, the dinner menu changes everyday. The beach is beautiful and it's easy to find places to snorkel right there. The hotel offers some free amenities (2-hour kayak rental, morning yoga, bike rental) which are quite nice. The bar boat in the evenings is worth a visit even if you don't plan on drinking and the village is lovely and quaint.
On the down side, it is far out. You have to take a 45 minute internal flight to get here (no hydro-lane or speed boat). There are only 4-5 flights a day to the island so if you don't land in Male at the ideal flight to get on the next plane you may need to wait 4/5 hours to get to the island, but expect to wait a while anyway.
This is a place to disconnect, so no TV in the rooms or anywhere, which may be a plus for some people, and not much for evening entertainment. In the evenings you can go to the boat bar where they serve alcohol. It's 5 minutes from the hotel by speed boat, with beautiful views, but even there it's sort of quiet.

Reviewed May 4, 2017All good things come to an end... We've just come back home from an 11 nights' stay at the Barefoot Hotel on Hanimaadhoo. Our head full of precious memories. We could not have chosen a better place for our first stay in the Maldives and for my husband 50th birthday. The Barefoot hotel is an eco friendly hotel, where it feels good living. It is layed back, very well managed, friendly, clean and tidy. Staff were discreet but always ready to help. The hotel is well integrated on the island, right on the seaside, but nicely hidden by coconut trees and other tropical plants. Our seafront room was spacious and comfortable with a very good shower.
There is not much to do on the island, but we never got bored. We spent our time swimming in the beautiful lagoon and relaxing at the beach. The snorkeling is amazing and filled up a good part of our days... We were lucky to see some dolphins, some turtles, rays and so many beautiful colourful fish. We couldn't get enough of it!
The food at the hotel restaurant was always very good, with plenty of variety everyday. There is a good team of chefs, who are always present during the meals, presenting their food, always cheerful and pleasant. We loved the Maldivian dinner last Friday and the traditional music afterwards played by the Maldivian staff. It was great to have an opportunity to danse ...barefoot! Thank you for the nice memories! We walked or cycled to the village several times. It is a typical muslim village.

Reviewed Mar 13, 2017This is an excellent place to stay in the Maldives if you want to experience marine and beach flora and fauna as there are daily expeditions, kayaks, snorkelling excursions and a diving centre all operating from the hotel. As the island is inhabited, there is the added interest of the local village and people and the hotel has free bicycles to use as well as organising cultural and nature tours. The two resident marine biologists are knowledgeable, enthusiastic, energetic and friendly and lead the daily excursions so you can find out more about the things you are seeing. There is something on each evening for anyone interested - Maldivian cooking demonstration, film, documentary or an interesting talk by one of the marine biologists. There is no alcohol on the island but there is a bar boat off shore in the evenings if you want it - we found that the non-alcoholic fruit cocktails available at the hotel bar were delicious and were all we needed. Our son enjoyed the diving and was well looked after by the dive team.

Reviewed Feb 27, 2017Vacanza bellissima.
Grazie. ;-)

Reviewed Dec 21, 2016This is a very nice hotel, at a beautiful beach. We had a sea view room with a large terrace with a fantastic view over the trees and the lagune, and literally 1 minute from a long white clean beach. The room was clean and large, with a large bed, which could be arranged as two separat beds. All the buildingmaterial was either stone or wood, and gave the impression of sustainability - as well as a very nice feeling in general.
The place offered free snorkelign every day at 3 pm, (NB: Bring your snorkel and fins, if you want to keep down your costs, if not you have to rent them), free kayaking (you may see delfins in the sea close to the hotel - we did) for 2 hours every day, free bikes, and free yoga every morning, instructed by Sarah from UK. She was a very good teacher, and the group swelled while I was there. In addition, she was fantastic in massageing. I had som health issues when I arrived, which she dealt with in a very profound, flexible and professional manner, with very good results. Highly recommended.
The marine biologist held some very interesting presentations in the evening about the species and coral life in the sea,
We also liked that the hotel is on an inhabited island. It is though obvious that the Maldives and the local community have a big problem with plastic bottles and what to do with the rubbish . It is very good that the hotel tries to be more sustainable, using only glass bottles, and distilling the water themselves.

Reviewed Aug 13, 2016In July, we visited the Barefoot with a family of 6. It was one of the best holiday experiences that all of us have ever had and for now a memory that we can look back on and smile. The hotel staff was just exquisite - they went out of their way to make sure that their guests were having a good time. One of us has a gluten free diet and the restaurant staff handled it very well - special pancakes in the morning (among others), and they never failed to remember it. Also, the beaches were looked after multiple times a day to make sure that no trash was laying around - it made us sad to see how many plastic bottles drifted ashore each day. The resort itself is quiet and very well kept.
Also, upon arrival we received an upgrade from 3 seaside rooms to 3 ocean view rooms - thank you very much! We would definitely recommend booking an ocean view or beachfront room if you can. They are closer to the beach and are also a little more private, as the porches of the seaside rooms are located facing each other which kind of leaves you looking at each other when sitting outside. Other than that, the rooms are very spacious, clean (housekeeping comes by twice a day. Housekeeping also refills your water bottle (ca. 1L) during their visit, so you'll have plenty of water, especially as water is also included in the price during breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Overall we had an amazing time at the Barefoot and would definitely recommend others to go experience it for themselves. :)

Bottled water is provided twice daily and I had no problems with Wi-Fi, even during an epic thunderstorm. Breakfast & Dinner buffets were excellent, very extensive choice and something different every day. Staff always very friendly and happy to explain the dishes etc.
The beach is gorgeous and well maintained - never feels crowded and you don't need reef shoes. If a competent swimmer you can swim or kayak to the edge of the reef and snorkel there. Organised trips are reasonably priced, recommend the Coral Garden snorkel trip which was amazing. There's also a daily complimentary snorkel trip led by the resident Marine Biologist who is a fountain of knowledge and very approachable with any queries.
Though not a diver myself, feedback from other guests was only positive - with praise for the professionalism of the expert staff who were also happy to give guidance with snorkeling in the lagoon.
In the evenings, the lounge area next to the restaurant hosts conservation lectures and movies, opportunity to be sociable if you want - or just chill out on the bean bag seats. Also in the evenings, there is the Black Pearl floating bar which is great fun with the best cocktails ! It's the best way to catch the sunset and star gaze, an absolute must-do.
