Buccleuch and Queensberry Arms Hotel

The staff were excellent — warm, helpful, and went out of their way to make sure everything ran smoothly. Breakfast was also a highlight, with plenty of choice and good quality. The bar area had a nice atmosphere too. However, the facilities were poor and need attention. Worth staying for the service and food, but manage your expectations on facilities.

Unfortunately, the facilities let the place down badly. My room was very dated, with textured coating peeling from the ceiling, and the carpets were old and visibly dirty. There was a broken window on the landing that hadn't been fixed. It was also very noisy at night, as rain on the tin roof made it hard to sleep. Oddly, the sink in our room had been replaced, but the rest of the room hadn't seen any updates in a long time.

The hotel had a good atmosphere with a buzz about the place. Being able to park directly outside was a real bonus.

A number of flights of stairs to a room at the top with a small window was a bit disappointing, although ok for a one night stay. The dining area at the front of the hotel lacked the atmosphere of the bar area.

The location was perfect for me as it is no more than 2 miles from where i was meeting the next morning. I particularly appreciate the fact that they are happy to have dogs in the building.

Little to criticise; the water pressure in the shower needs to be a little stronger.

Booked the apartment style room which was great but it said there would be a washing machine and tumble dryer and there wasn’t one. Some of the interior was a bit tired and could do with updating e.g., when you open the dishwasher the skirting board underneath falls down and stops you being able to open it. No working tv in the bedroom, dvd only but the dvd player didn’t work and no batteries in the remote controls so we had to switch them between the controls.

Was like a little apartment. Private backyard so we could let dog out. Evening meal was really good and friendly staff. Breakfast was excellent!

We stayed in one of the cottages, loads of space, lovely sitting room, kitchen, bathroom.

Lovely hotel. We had a one night stay with our dog. Room was beautiful. We had dinner in the hotel and it was the best meal we've had out in a long time. 10 out of 10!

The room was small and not very warm.

Had a lovely stay! The room was a good size for two people, the bathroom had modern facilities and was spacious, the room was super clean and the sheets were incredibly soft. A great nights stay!

The food here is excellent. I normally prefer to eat out, but this is the rare hotel where the restaurant is worth eating in. The room was great - really comfortable, wonderfully presented, and with a brilliant bathroom. The staff were on the whole wonderful. Very friendly and professional. Looking forward to returning. Will definitely recommend.

There was a younger member of staff serving us who really didn't seem to be having a good day. Fair enough - we're all human, but she did let it transfer into strangely cold and sometimes almost distainful service which was a shame. Everyone else was fabulous though so it was a small thing.

Bathroom in the main building room was dirty as was the headboard that is stained. Service was lacking all around. It seemed as if guests that were not locals were a nuisance or they couldn’t be bothered. Very strange as our last visit was so much better. The other room we had was nicer and much cleaner.

The hotel is popular, it is in perfect location for an overnight stay, it was very clean , our room was clean and comfortable, the food was excellent, and nice friendly and helpful staff, would definitely recommend to friends and would definitely stay again

We were on the road, which woke us early, as busy. We did discover shutters when leaving, so bit our fault!

The stay was fantastic, would like to especially mention Gemma who waited for us to get in after we’d had a very delayed journey, she was so kind and helpful ! And also fantastic breakfast provided by Gary.

The bed was super comfortable, and all the hotel staff made me feel very welcome. The restaurant serves really good breakfasts and dinners. I would definitely stay here again.

The temperature of the shower was very hard to control- ( too hot!). But I didn’t report this. However, given that the staff worked really hard to make my stay perfect, I think if I had reported the problem with shower, this would have been sorted out.

Excellent bedroom with extremely comfortable bed. Great big walk-in shower and a separate bath. The hotel staff were all extremely welcoming and friendly and our dinner was delicious! Happy to recommend the BQA for all of the above and its location with Dumfriesshire - so good for exploring in all directions.

Fabulous evening meal, really lovely people, great service . Can’t fault the food or service.

The shower was so weak - impossible to wash your hair . Also shower seal needs a good clean although the rest of the bathroom was clean . Very thin duvets and mattress not very firm . Although when requested I got a blanket so thanks for that .

Self contained cottage next to the hotel. Good size double bedroom, small lounge with settee and widescreen smart tv, kitchen with fridge/freezer, appliances. Excellent shower and bathroom too

Nit picking but no sweetener for coffee!

Very well located. I arrived late on a wet Friday evening and the place was humming - full of locals and guests having a good time. Had to leave straight after a large, and good, breakfast the next morning so did not get to spend much time in the hotel. But the best bit was yet to come. It took me until Monday morning to work out I had left an iPad in my room. I rang the hotel and was expecting the usual run around. But Amy on reception could not have been more helpful and efficient. She arranged to get it sent back to me, initially at her own expense because the person with access to their accounts was away. I have paid her back and will stay again. Very personal service.

The full Scottish breakfast was excellent. Our room, although external to the hotel, was very comfortable and warm. The evening meal was also very good, we can recommend the scallops and the venison.

Bedroom was too hot. Shower room was tiny and the WH basin was in the bedroom - not ideal. Bed was too far away from the side table.

The hotel was excellent! Manager Ralph and his staff were extremely welcoming. The rooms were lovely, beautiful decor, modern bathroom and very clean . We had an evening meal there and it was delicious. Would definitely stay again.

It had an old fashioned charm within up to date modern facilities. The bedroom was very spacious and very accessible

The entrance area was downbeat and unwelcoming and gave a very well worn impression which wasn’t true for the rest of the premises.

Fantastic atmosphere and well trained, friendly staff. Traditional scottish hospitality without the cliche tourist tartan / highland cow / stag, etc. Great food, especially local beef and game. Comfortable room for 2 humans and 2 dogs.

Breakfast buffet a bit of a let down: industrial jams and honey? Full breakfast was good though for those that can have a full meal the day after a big dinner.
