The food
The room and the whole place needs a good clean , paint and new carpet on the stairs . £360 for a very average room for one night . Description was luxury room . Definitely Not.
The village is a nice piece of suffolk. The staff were attentive.
Our room was the smallest they had, it was dangerous with many steps and ledges with uneven floors to navigate, and we were not warned of this. Some of the food was burnt and portions were small, all was overpriced, they were trying to beta gastro pub.
The Ship was lovely, good position for Dunwich beach.
Food and drink Prices,to expensive,
Comfortable bed and most of the staff were pleasant.
We were given a room with disabled facilities which we found a little off putting it was a large room with an extra bed that we didn’t need and the shower water went everywhere making it a slip hazard. The car park was outside our window so there were some noise issues and the food left a lot to be desired. We only ate dinner once and were not impressed. I suspect the location is the only reason it’s still popular.
Room was amazing. Bed was very comfortable food was great.
Just very expensive for a couple of nights
Excellent position near Dunwich beach and the museum Comfortable bed and large bathroom in the 2 annex ground floor rooms my friend and I were in. Helpful staff and good fish and chips supper. Excellent breakfast.. I had a kipper.
My friend had a query about lost property but it proved very difficult to make contact directly with the hotel management on the ground despite several messages (phone messages. Email messages and an enquiry form message) sent through the hotel chain central reservation number. The reply (negative as it was relayed to me that nothing had been found) was only given by that reception route 3 full days later and I still had to make another call to them myself. At no time did I have a direct ring back or message back from the Ship team itself. This sort of thing should be dealt with speedily and directly by individual member hotels.
Could not stand up in bath to have a shower, Ceiling to low.
Clean and quiet and comfortable

Comfortable and great location

Staff lovely. Room v nice. Location good. Food nice.
Cant think of anything
Durchweg sehr freundliches Personal.
Friendly staff, great location
Didn't love being overlooked by the visitors to the pub
Fabulous location in beautiful Dunwich. Lovely breakfast. Ate dinner in the garden in the sunshine which was really lovely and relaxed. The fish and chips were delicious. All the staff were really helpful and friendly.
Location
Shabby, rooms needed a good proper deep clean, especially the bathroom. Food unappetising, small menu with weird interpretations of the offering-no salad in a Nicoise salad! Rubbery lamb Kofta. This is not how we remember the Ship, it seems to have lost its way which is really sad. I hope some one can sort it out and bring it back to how it was.
Location beatiful
Room basic. Fan noisy and didn't work..Food appalling. We did complain but only begrudgingly did they knock money off with no apologies just excuses.
Lovely old property with character.
Not keen on dogs in the breakfast room. It is unhygienic and It was difficult for the waitress to navigate around the tables .
Location is great for both hikes and beach. Very nice people staffing the place. Quiet and restful. Good cuisine
This was the most charming inn. We loved the outdoor seating which was perfect for enjoying a pint in the summer breeze. The food for breakfast and dinner was delicious. I have never had such wonderful hollandaise sauce in all my life and that is my favorite. Loved the fish and chips and white bait too. And, the topper was walking to the beautiful beach. It was completely amazing.
Nothing
Friendly staff and close to beach
Nothing
Lucky enough to visit the beach in very good weather. Enjoyed dinner and breakfast.
Price, twice as expensive as other hotels on our Norfolk/Suffolk trip. Technology was limited, there wasn’t an operational TV in the bar, despite England playing. The staff did their best to improvise with a TV from a guest room, but we retired to our room to watch it there.
2 night stay in a Great hotel, wonderful location the staff were very warm and welcoming.Breakfast was amazing so much variety to choose. We had an evening meal which was also excellent. The room was really nice we stayed in a snug double which was very clean with a comfy bed , white fluffy towels and tea, coffee with biscuits as well ,
Due to the age of the property, the low ceiling in the bathroom made for an awkward shower in our particular room . Not really a complaint though as it an old building but there was a bath .
Friendly manager, so helpful with my elderly parents. The restaurant was excellent which meant we could eat in every night without getting bored.
Too much cream in my porridge.
Thank you for offering a full vegan!
The breakfast was fine but it took far too long for someone to come to the table and take our order. Drinks arrived 30 mins later and tasted strange. Food arrived after 45 minutes. We had a meal in the bar but the flies were very annoying although the food was good.
Comfortable big bed Good shower Location so close to beach is quite exceptional Breakfast Friendly staff
Felt more thought could have been given to room allocated for visually impaired person with guide dog. The property were aware of our circumstances yet gave us a room up a dark flight of stairs despite having many annexe rooms on ground floor outside with no steps to the outside. Loud banging from kitchen door that shook the room.
Clean and comfortable and the staff were friendly.
Shower was rather difficult to work at first. . Maybe some explanation in the bathroom of how to work it would be useful.
Brilliant location
Nothing
Location & food great
Stayed in a room above kitchen so slamming doors were annoying
Great location and comfortable room. Friendly staff. Good breakfast.
Dinner not great - also very poor service, seated around the corner in an empty room and forgotten about. Had to go find and prompt staff to clear plates, order dessert and to pay. Quite expensive for what it is for a one night-stay
If you’re after a genuine Suffolk experience- this is it. The food a breakfasts were everything I remember from my childhood (porridge no cream, kippers, local eggs, bacon and sausages) plus well made staples such as avocado on sourbread or eggs florentine. Dinner similarly impressive. Real beer on tap. Gorgeous garden. My parents had a fantastic accessible room in the stable block. This place is exceptionally well run for such a small hotel. The location is full of character, birdsong and beach!
The disabled room could do with a comfortable riser chair suitable for elderly people.
Lovely breakfast and there was a good choice of food. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food at dinner was good, even though the menu was a bit limited. The room was clean and the toiletries were good.
Our choice of room was not the best for us oldies as it was up two flights of stairs which were quite narrow. There were slanted ceilings where we kept bumping our heads
Good location
The bathroom and some of the fittings are a bit dirty or needed updating.
Wonderful accommodating staff, excellently clean rooms and food was incredible.
Beautiful rooms. Very quiet, no disturbance from the pub itself or neighbours. Definitely book again
The beer and garden, friendly staff, great location for the beach ⛱️
Going home
Location, staff were friendly and helpful.
Carpets need to be cleaned especially staircase. Breakfast was very slow and a bit disappointing. Room switch at last minute to a rather cramped room.
Location.
Very overpriced.. Booked a table for an evening meal at 18.30. Dining area was a small, noisy, busy bar. After 45 minutes I was told that I would have to leave shortly as the table was required for another booking.
Extra friendly helpful staff . Short walk to beach
Nothing at all
Feels quietly special the moment you arrive. Set in a beautiful, slightly wild coastal location, there’s something almost other-worldly about it, as if you’ve stepped away from everything for a while. The atmosphere is calm, cosy and genuinely welcoming. The staff were excellent throughout and the whole place has a relaxed charm that really makes it feel like a hidden gem. A lovely, memorable stay.
The property was a beautiful old building, dinner and breakfast was very good, it was clean and staff were very friendly. Overall good value for money.
I thought the bar was a bit small, when looking at pictures on line it appeared bigger, if diners were eating there wasn't much room to have a drink. I did request twin beds pre-arrival but had no response, the room was small but then we paid a lower premium so probably to be expected.
Breakfast was excellent, service was excellent staff were lovely and friendly, lovely atmosphere, very dog friendly.
Very hard mattress on bed and lumpy pillows ( stayed in All Saints double bed room)
Well decorated room, peaceful room (in the block in the carpark). Nice dinner, great location, good price (£113) on a Sunday night. Friendly, helpful staff.
Bed was a bit tired (two-person shaped dents with a ridge down the middle) and pillows quite solid. Breakfast was tasty, but could have been more plentiful.
Good location nice pub traditional
Radiator noisy kept me up at night
We loved the property and its history. The room was very comfortable with a lovely view.. The staff were all very helpful and the food was served promptly and was delicious.
Can’t think of anything we didn’t like.
Ideal location for coastal walking
Bed a little too soft
Location near the beach. Restaurant. Excellent staff, couldn’t do enough, especially the assistant manageress
Millgate my room was above the kitchen and from the sound of it, the walk in fridge, the door kept slamming late and started early again, along with the extractor fan. In January a proper blanket for the bed would have been useful
Location and public areas
Terrible breakfast service and dopey staff
Room was excellent. Everything I needed (tea, coffee etc and towels) and very nice smelling handwash, shampoo, conditioner and hand/body lotion. I just had breakfast and dinner and the menus were very well balanced. All my meals were delicious and with very generous portions.
My room; Hen Hill has slightly peculiar layout of toilet being on a raised platform as was the bath (with shower facilities), which then meant the shower head rested on the highest setting of the rail was too low for me to enjoy a shower as the roof was on a slope. I'm 5feet 4inches tall, so could get in and out of the bath relatively ok (getting out of the raised bath was a bit of a trick though).
Very helpful and professional staff team - nothing was too much trouble for them. Makes a huge difference to the overall experience, quite apart from the quality of the accommodation, food, location, etc.
The double bed mattress was a bit too ‘mobile’ - the whole thing moved if one of us shifted, which interrupts sleep.
The staff were super helpful and friendly and the location is great for walking.
The rooms are nice but the pillows and duvet were very lumpy and uncomfortable.
Excellent location close to the beach. Very good pub food.
The pub and room were a bit too heated, so we had to open the windows in order to sleep.
It's a beautiful relaxing place to stay.
Nothing, it was brilliant.
Love position.....the comfort....staff..beautiful building. P
Breakfast great...but evening meal disappointing.....and I know Friday's busy...but a group were so loud we couldn't hear each other speak......sadly won't be going back ...and this was my 4th visit.....
The Ship's location is perfect: just a short walk to a beautiful almost deserted stony beach that goes on for miles. It's certainly an idyllic spot that my wife and I have visited many times over the years, The beer and food have always been good at The Ship and we enjoyed a delicious Sunday roast there this trip. Staff were friendly & helpful.
Our room was in the adjacent stable block alongside the main house and was quite cramped and small, but as we've stayed before we expected it to be so. The lack of any other hotel/guest house nearby (although there's a lot of holiday lets) also means that the room is a tad overpriced for what it is.
Excellent
Lovely location and easy to go to other places
Ni space to sit other than bar areas
The room was lovely and cosy
Location good Excellent food, but could do with varying menu more.
Booked good, double room but disappointed to be given a room in a separate one story converted building overlooking car park. Gave the feeling of a motel with room space much less than a Premier Inn. Paid £550 B & B for 3 nights which was not good value for money. Difficult to just have a drink in the bar as tables were used for dining.
Location and isolation!. Food (Breakfast and Dinner) was good - especially Sunday Roast. A vey generous sized room. Good selection of beers in the bar
It is a noisy hotel, floors creak, you can hear the guest upstairs walking round. The passageways are cramped and the check-in desk is in the middle of a corridor which makes for a poor experience when a family are trying to get to the har. There was a lack of staff covering breakfast service
Quaint and old fashioned hotel. Room smaller than brochure picture.
Very pretty from the outside, beautifully clean, Our room was sweet and quaint, we loved it. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Food was amazingly scrumptious. Loved it here, would definitely recommend and come back.
Nothing. It was lovely
Clean comfortable and nicely decorated.
Nothing
I had made a mistake when booking the room, i booked a 'snug'. With two Golden Retrievers - a big mistake. Management were great and found us an outside room that was more suited. Loved the staff, other customers and the people in general. Felt the history.
nice place.to.spend a night walking distance from the beach and with mice coastline.walks.
This property is a real find. It has character and it is reasonably priced for the service received. Breakfasts were great and reasonable choices for our 2 night dinner stay. Very close to a pebbly beach and not far from Southwold, Aldburagh, Norwich and the broads.
Nice bar area
Cosy room is fine but this was really uncomfortable with waves each side of the room. It was at the top of two flights of narrow stairs with a difficult key lock
Beach
Complete rip off on price. Room booked was not the one advertised. Way too expensive.
Location ,ambience, food
Room very small and basic
The staff, the breakfasts and the location are superb.
The interiors are painted in very dark colours, which may be a fashion statement, but the effect is depressing. And the carpets in the residents' area are shocking and should have been replaced when the refit was done.
Character, friendly staff, good location.
Sometimes there wasn’t enough staff.
So near the sea and so quiet. Lovely food. Lovely staff
Our room was lovely. But right above a door that banged every time someone went through it. But was silent at night by ten so no real drama.
Really great members of staff - ALL of them. Great breakfast selection - and very welcoming to my dog. Dinner in the pub was delicious. Will definitely return.
I liked it all. While I would have liked a room at the front overlooking the marshes, I could see that it was a busy week - so understand the pressures on rooms. Next time, perhaps.
Some items were overcooked eg black pudding and fried egg.
