Nice room in chalet style block, surprisingly roomy. Breakfast was good with great staff.

Firstly the receptionist was fantastic. So friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. A real personal touch. The room was fabulous. We’ve stayed in many hotels and it was a refreshing change to have The Bell get the basics right in our opinion. Decent sized towels. Decent mugs for tea and a proper kettle, and a dressing table in the right place that allows you to sit in front of a mirror and plug the hairdryer in! Simple things, but common sense and so important in our opinion.

The room was large and beautiful. The bar and restaurant are excellent.

The bathroom was simply a bath with no curtains so quite impractical to shower without making a big mess.

This was our third stay at The Bell Inn. We love the location which is quiet yet close to major centers. We booked the "cozy" room as we had done so before. This time our cozy room was on the top floor which was very cozy! As relatively tall people the sloping ceiling did make our stay a little uncomfortable, the most problematic being accessing the desk area which is extremely tight.

The room was very well presented, I was able to book a table in the bar for dinner with no hassle which was good but didn't stay for breakfast.

Nothing, as always it was excellent experience, the ease to book and the staff were very accommodating, pleasant and polite. The only thing I would bare in mind (I knew and was told) that certain rooms have very low ceilings for people of a certain height.

A lovely quiet room facing out onto a courtyard, it was a hot day but the room stayed pretty cool as shading at the front of the property, good to have a window to open at night and a fan was available. Room was a good size with a modern wet room attached. Bed was comfortable. Lovely biscuits made at the hotel. Breakfast was available in a lovely breakfast room with large open doors at the back. A good quality breakfast.

Fan was a little noisy and a bit dusty. Pillows were a bit too firm.

OUTSTANDING SERVICE Staff were all superb. Arrived with my husband who has mobility issues and they went over and above to accommodate and help us, getting staff to support up stairs and ensured the same was available in the morning. Offered breakfast in the room to help, called in the morning to check when we needed help. Reserved a table close to the door, suggested parking and drop off points and provided chairs whilst waiting.

Great food in a historic pub, a huge comfortable room with views across the countryside and real AC, and exemplary service throughout. It would have been a straight 10/10 if the water pressure in the shower had been consistent.

Room was very comfortable. Lovely decor. Great to have air con on when arriving in a heat wave.

Shower was a bit lack lustre and the all in one shower room was a bit tricky when it had been used.

The only thing is that the shower didn't have hot water. Even though.it was very hot still would have liked a warm shower. Informed the staff very apologetic and would fix it straightaway.

The room was neat and clean, the bed was comfortable, and the Inn is located in a quiet place.

There aren’t any USB or USB-C ports on the power plugs. Also, the room cost could include breakfast downstairs in the restaurant to make it more worth the money.

Stunning location - personable staff and a top quality room

It got extremely hot in the room even with a big fan that's provided and the window open. We stayed in June but I can't imagine what it would have been like if it was any hotter.

The room was fantastic, spacious, clean and comfortable. It had character which made it a far more memorable stay than a generic hotel you'd get in the city. The food in the pub was also great and the breakfast was lovely.

I'm picking here but the room didn't have an iron or ironing board. However when I asked, they brought me one straight away so it was a minor inconvenience to say the least.

We only live around fifteen minutes away from the hotel and just fancied a night away. It was amazing how quiet and isolated it felt. The town felt a little bit lost in time which was perfect for us. Quiet, no road noise just quality time with my wife.

It was a 35c heatwave and when we arrived, there was no Aircon, which is fine. However, the windows had been left shut all day and so the room felt incredibly hot and uncomfortable for a long time, even with the fan on. We also were not told about there being a 10k run/ road closure the next day and so we could not leave the carpark for 1.5 hours upon checkout. We were not offered the room for longer or even a free drink during this time.

Beautiful room and comfortable bed. Had a lovely evening meal as always. The chef had changed since our last stay, and the food was on point.

Toilet cistern in our room took forever to fill and was quite noisy.

Lovely friendly staff and great value for money

This is one of the best places we have stayed. So much thought has been put into making for a great stay. The historic inn is beautifully kept, the food excellent and the staff extremely pleasant.

There was nothing not to like in our opinion

Location was perfect for visiting family in the local area. The building and Horndon itself is a lovely place to stay in Thurrock to be in a quiet corner of the county. Room was always clean, well stocked and staff were friendly and helpful. Pub is good and beer garden is the best place to be in Horndon during warmer weather.

Only two things to note for staying in the summer, the room does not come with a fridge or air conditioning. For the former, the cost of the room I would expect a small fridge to keep the water provided cold at least if not a few more soft drinks especially when taking into account the second point. The latter was an issue during our stay because of staying in the summer months, when the temperature was above 22-24 degrees (common for the area between late May and early September and during our stay it peaked at 28 during the night) the fan was not sufficient to cool the room down leading it to be stuffy and uncomfortable. I appreciate the age of the building retricts the ability to have aircon integrated into the room, however the addition of a portable unit is a viable option to replace the fans and is only exacerbated by the lack of a fridge for cool drinks.

Lovely country pub hotel in a little village. Comfortable room and bed, nice and quiet. The staff were very helpful in providing information prior to my stay and welcoming upon arrival.

Good room and comfortable bed, bathroom was fine. All very clean and in good condition. Pub was welcoming and well-stocked. Restaurant food very good indeed.

Our only problem was that the restaurant stopped serving food at 6pm on the Sunday, which we hadn’t realised.

Wonderful hotel - the restaurant is still as amazing as I remember as a child. Fantastic staff and comfy rooms. We will definitely be back!

The Bell Inn hotel is in a quaint English village on the borders of the countryside. Loads of character and history.

An oasis, great food, beer, staff and rooms

We've stayed here about 9 or 10 times. The place is amazing, nothing you could find any fault with. The staff, the rooms, the service and the food and drink are, and always have been amazing. Our favourite hotel.

Bed wasn't attached to the headboard. Thus, it would move around the room whenever you sat up in bed.

The room was fantastic - plenty of space, large and comfortable bed, big TV, excellent shower. There was a Nespresso-type coffee machine and tea making facilities.

There was a very limited selection of vegetarian options on the dinner menu and dinner was expensive but good; breakfast is taken next door rather than in the hotel restaurant and didn’t feel like good value.

The room was huge and had an amazing roll top bath and the bed was unbelievable comfortable and the food was exceptional I will definitely be back.

The staff were excellent from the booking process all the way through to departure . It was a very difficult time for me and the reason for my stay and they went out of their way to be so helpful and accommodating. They went above and beyond.

Breakfast was good, both in value and quality. Reasonably priced bar with a good selection of beers/ales, etc. Bar staff during the day took the time to share samples of guest ales available - a very nice touch. Rooms were very clean, and beds very comfortable.

Coffee needed work. I could see the restaurant had all the equipment, but the coffee fell short of expectations. Ordered a flat white, which was weak and tasted like filter coffee with some milk added. Some bar staff need to improve their friendliness towards paying non-local guests (other staff across the hotel were friendly, approachable, and very helpful). A bias was evident towards their local clientele from some of the staff. One member of evening bar staff was lamenting about my group out in the courtyard, as we were a little to rowdy for their liking. We were high-spirited yes; it was our wake for our deceased mother - what did they expect in a pub??? That aside, I would stay again, as the overall experience was positive.
