It was comfortable enough for two nights. I wouldn't have wanted to stay longer.
I made a late booking (about 8pm) and said I would arrive between 9 and 10. When I turned up the door was unlocked but all the lights were off and no one was there. There was a table with keys on it and a note of who was in which room, but I wasn't on it. I rang the number that was written down about 5 times, but there was no answer. In the end I just picked a key for a room with no name next to it and let myself in. In the morning I told a lady who was very nice which room I was in, and she said that was fine. It was a very bizarre experience, anyone could just wander in and pick an empty room and crash without paying. I'm glad I had a portable door lock with me for extra security. It was cleanish, although the bathroom could do with a deep clean and there were cobwebs all over the ceiling. The sink in room 7 was much too small and didn't drain very well. There was a lot of dust on the kettle. There was a ton of black mould around the window in the stairwell. The pillows were very thin, and there was just a thin sheet on the mattress, no protector or anything. I did have a look in one of the other empty rooms and they looked much nicer but I'd unpacked by that point and it was around midnight so I didn't want to disturb others by moving, so maybe it's just room 7 that could do with a bit of an overhaul.
Easy to check in and out and bed was comfortable
Dirty, really run down and no breakfast other than some rotten bananas and cereal and with witabix
Good
Good
Vast improvement on a few years ago. Friendly staff, comfortable room, and reasonable breakfast, including eggs and ham. Good value. Unlike last time, would be tempted to return.
Reception procedure wasn't obvious on arrival (one inevitably walks straight to the bar counter in a pub). Slightly noisy out the front, being on the main road, not helped by being in front of a junction too. But not too bad. Maybe I missed it, but a limited choice of cereals at breakfast.
Location
It felt worn out and tired.
Friendly staff. Good location. Very comfortable room. Very good value for money
Needs a smoke alarm in the bathroom.
Nothing horrible full stop
No one present at hotel no food or drink just a piece of paper giving you directions to rooms you could not find. Total horrible experience I went to another hotel
Location
Bar closed early
Bed was so comfy and staff were lovely
Staff very friendly, rooms very good.
N/a
A bargain for a no-nonsense stop in the area.
Some of the craps looked like they needed replacing. And the beer garden was a bit rundown.
Good space to stay for families .
It was all good and best according to price.
Friendly clean place to stay
Lovely little place. Got it at short notice. Clean and comfortable.
Nothing. For the money it was great.
It was clean and the staff were cheerful and helpful
No internet in my room, tv didn’t work, no windows so very stuffy and the shower was poor
We had a nice cool room with out door stave for the dog
Nothing
The shower room attached.
The place was devoid of people only met one person when checking in and never saw anyone else over the rest of my stay even though it remained open for anyone to walk around.Very strange 🤔but somewhere to sleep safely.
The member of staff I called to try and check in when there were no staff around was very friendly.
We did not see a member of staff throughout the 2-night stay. The bar and restaurant were not open at all. On Monday night the hotel room stunk of fish and chips from the chip shop next door. The light above the shower in room 1 does not work, there was a horrid mat in the shower you had to stand on. The room was filthy with dust on the material headboard, mould in the shower and hair on the floor from previous guests. There was no hand soap in the bathroom either.
Pleasant town and the location of the hotel was good if you are touring Wales. It is a no frills hotel providing the basics and fine for an overnight stay. The staff I did come into contact with were very pleasant and helpful.
Probably fair to say the hotel has seen better days. Because of its condition the room felt overpriced.
Nothing
Dirty mattresses and bedding. Unclean and funny smell
Room comfortable and clean
Restaurant and bar not open as a conventional hotel but a take away fish and chip shop where they would bring your food through to empty restaurant or you could eat in the garden which was ok on this occasion as were in a heatwave. On requesting drinks as the bar appeared closed was told it operated as an honesty bar. Help yourself & leave a note of what you’ve had
Location and price
A bit confusing about the check in however once it is explained easy to understand
The room was fine
The total lack of service I fail to see how a hotel can be successfully managed and run remotely pretty dreadful. The council even managed to start the re-surfacing of the road just outside my bedrooms window fantastic. No bar open, no food available, I do realise that the road works was nothing to do with the hotel but for me it put the tin hat on it.
Location great for what we wanted.
Allowed dogs, nice garden area for him. Great supply of goods for breakfast which was included in the price. Fish & chip shop attached to the hotel.
Clean, comfortable, no frills and excellent value for money.
Checking in was haphazard -rather d i y!!
Great location and good price
Nothing.
We found Centipedes on the bed.
Friendly.
Unclear about checking in on arrival.
Breakfast staff very helpful
Bed was comfy
Attic room was a bit tight as I am tall
Beer Basic food
Breakfast room needs updating
Nice atmosphire. Very pleasant staff very welcoming as we had a dog. Continental breakfast very nice
Stairs to room very narrow
Convenient. Staff exceptionally friendly. A+ for making us feel valued.
Hauling our luggage up the narrow steep steps.
Friendly staff
No soap or toiletries. Bare minimum of comforture with dodgy tiny sink and loose toilet seat.
Location and friendly helpful staff
Stairs too steep and narrow for me. Room quite cramped.
Lovely pub with play area for children and a fish & chip shop attached
I enjoyed my stay no problems
The staff. Louie, Adam, and Lucy all bent over backwards to make sure that all my needs were met. Without them, it would have been tough.
Cleanliness of the room. The carpets really need steam cleaned. Too many stains from people dropping liquids. There were also spider webs and cobwebs in just about every corner, and I did kill one spider as it was coming down to get a closer look at me. The grout in the shower needs cloroxed to get rid of themildew staisn too.
Everything the, staff and the place was amazing
Nothing
Location, central to Wales and half way to journey end. Easy to find. Free parking. Simple straight forward breakfast.
Apartment could have been better presented (some parts needed painting).
Parking and friendly welcome.
I stayed in the POD which was very small but acceptable for one night. There was nowhere to put a case/ rucksack or clothes. The tv had such poor reception that it couldn’t be watched. There was no internet and the mobile signal was poor. The oil filled radiator didn’t work. The electric shower could only be turned off by getting out and switching off at the mains.
Lovely room and amazing staff
I arrived very late and the hotel had made arrangements for this which was great. My room and bathroom were very spacious and scrupulously clean. The staff were very helpful and kind. The Castle Hotel provided excellent value for money and was ideal for my overnight stay.

Clean and tidy. Good size room. Good location
Requested a room with a bath which wasn’t provided. More expensive than normal. Bed uncomfortable.
Ideal location for my work, easy to find and had parking.
Bed uncomfortable, no mug left in the room for coffee / tea.
Room was lovely, and the breakfast in the morning was great. Enjoyed the self service.
The check in was less straighforward than we'd hoped with no one to greet us at reception, but once we managed to call the managers it was smooth.
The staff couldn't do enough for you... the TV in our room didnt work so they tried their hardest to sort it and when they couldnt they brought another TV in the room so we had TV! I LOVED that it was dog friendly so my boy could come stay with me. We were having to leave before breakfast was being served and they showed us how we could help ourselves and we really enjoyed it! Clean overall, enjoyed a banging pizza in the pub downstairs in the evening. Lovely location.. in a pretty little town. Cheap and cheerful! Would definitely stay again!
I generally dont think I have anything to put here..
The breakfast was continental with lovely fresh bread.
The location for anyone exploring mid-Wales
Carpets in the room and staircase could do with a refresh.
The location
The TV didn't work and couldn't find any staff in evening to complain to
The room was fine. It was what we needed for our overnight stay so no complaints. The room was clean, bedding, towels, shower gels all fine. There was an issue with the hot water that was fixed within 30mins. Very reasonable price for the 3 of us with breakfast included.
Not much, location is good
Bar shut at eight and the staff disappeared, it’s a shambles No tv No hot water, staff couldn’t care less.
Lovely family room, own entrance and patio. Lovely hosts breakfast in the morning. Fantastic value for money
The location
Not having hot water Tv didn’t work Room was in need of a proper cleaning Staff didn’t have a clue how to run a hotel Breakfast was a joke
It was only a quick stop over, everything was clean & tidy. The staff was pleasant and helpful. As I was up and out early, they have a continental breakfast avaliable, thats there ready, you just help yourself, which was perfect for me.
It's situated on a busy junction and some of the lorries can be noisy
Staff were friendly. Area is amazing with gorgeous country side.
The room was run down, dirty, smelt of fish from chip shop next door and not in keeping with advertised pictures on booking.com. Beds were uncomfortable. The boiler kept groaning every two minutes keeping us awake with very little sleep for duration of the stay.
Everything i liked. Was soo cosy vibes clean and lovely room. Nice smell. Very big room with attached two toilet 🥰had a good time. Nice view front of hotel.
It’s a good location if you are visiting Hay-on-Wye
The family suite in the basement needs serious attention. It desperately needs to be scrubbed, repaired, and painted. It smells like sewage and feels damp. There is mold on several walls, random mdf over holes, dirty walls, and just kind of gross. The beds are fine, the staff is nice, breakfast is simple but gets the job done. But they shouldn’t be charging more than £50 a night until it gets repaired and cleaned up.
Breakfast was basic, but no complaints as it was complementary. I stayed in the 'Pod', a self-contained wooden outbuilding which was warm and cosy: just a bed and small bathroom. I slept well and would consider staying again, as I like the village and its proximity to my destination, Hay - on - Wye (bookshops).
No complaints! It was cosy and fine.
Breakfast was self-serve with everything you would expect, freshly brewed coffee was available if requested. The Hotel also runs a Fish and Chip shop, so fish and chips on the Friday we arrived was really good, fresh chips and great fish. The room we had was a good size, comfortable bed, again a good size. The shower worked well with good pressure, and the radiators were adjustable so the room temperature was as we needed.
Little could be improved for what we paid. A lot of thought had been put in by the owners to make this a sustainable accommodation available to people who want uncomplicated facilities to enjoy the Countryside.
I needed to have a different room for a medical reason which they were very supportive and kind about. I was changed to a different room straight away. Great acces to the garden from the room which I needed due to having 2 dogs with me. Continental brealfastwas available even though we left early in the morning.
Nothing
The staff are very helpful and friendly. Lots of tea coffee and milk. The bathroom was super clean with snowy white towels.
The pillows on the bed are disgusting, brown and sweaty. The bed was hard and needs a good mattress topper or decent mattress. The bedroom needs a deep clean, cobwebs on the walls and old water staining on the ceiling.
The room was clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and welcoming.
It could have done with a bit of an upgrade in the reception/bar area.
Didn't look like on the picture
Totally different then look on picture. Old and dirty
NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY, NOTHING.
EVERYTHING. Horrendous accommodation, stale smell everywhere. Room filthy, carpets black and stained. Bathroom full of mould, walls back in sections. Bed looked like a crime scene. Bottom flat sheet was clean, but underneath ...... WOW Mattress protector was not a protector, it was a flimsy topper. Disgustingly filthy, full of urine stains, the smell was overpowering. The quilt was vile. Someone had obviously been murdered and wrapped in it, dried blood stains covered top to bottom. I have NEVER seen anything like this. No one there on arrival, just a piece of paper on a table with the key and room number. No duty staff or manager, only a cleaner. The whole place felt dirty. We did not stay, there was no way we were sleeping in that room ..... we left. Three night we booked for. The pictures on Booking.com are 100% deceiving, nothing like the hotel on their website. I would absolutely NOT recommend staying here. We have raised a serious complaint to Booking.com regarding this hotel on their website. Booking.com have informed us that there will not be any refund. They had contacted the hotel, but closed the complaint. My concerns have obviously fallen on deaf ears, Booking.com gladly take your money and their customer service is atrocious. .
A gentleman sat outside and showed us our room but said he was a guest? Very friendly 🙂
Dirty carpet on the way up the stairs, light in hallway constantly coming on! Just looked abandoned 😕
Very reasonable, good service and comfortable
The room was very clean and comfortable and the staff were lovely and friendly.
There are very steep stairs. The only food available was from the attached fish and chip shop. Surprisingly despite it being a Friday the pub was closed as there were no staff to open it. I didn’t like having to eat my morning toast off a paper plate.
Breathtaking views lovely staff and clean room. Will definetly use again
It was help yourself to breakfast ~ but the location was great for a one night stay.
Whilst the room was clean & comfortable there was no one there to check us in ~ just our room keys with our name on a piece of paper ~ when we checked out we just left our keys on the table.
It was in a good location
The sign says 'a warm welcome' yet I walked in and absolutely no one was there I had to ring 2 different numbers for someone to come, I asked questions about checking out and breakfast that was included and they didn't know the answers. The room was dirty and the overall inside of the building was really run down, breakfast was included which consisted of either crumpets, toast or cereal, there were no staff for us to check out so we just left the keys. Overall didn't think it was worth £75.
This is the perfectly situated hotel, equidistant from the literary centre of the universe that is Hay on Wye and the Town that has everything, Brecon. Beautiful rooms, fantastic hot showers, endless breakfasts and the most hospitable staff you can imagine! But a huge added bonus! There is a fish and chip shop beside the hotel that serves some of the best food in Talgarth at very reasonable prices. In the area? Stay at the Castle. I do!
Very accommodating when we were in an emergency. Staff helpful and friendly. Room comfortable and clean. Microwave & fridge in breakfast area was useful for making dinner. Fruit etc available.
Self-service breakfast, so not cooked breakfast. Initially no vegan options but Katherine got plant milk in especially.
El único hotel disponible
Asqueroso. Poco higiénico
It would help if the staff replied to emails and complaints about the state of the rooms
Lack of communication
Very friendly staff and allowed me to have an early breakfast which was great for an early get away. Breakfast was nice with a good continental selection.
Walls a little thin so could hear other people.
Quiet. Good location. Staff were very friendly and very kind/accommodating!
N/a
Upgraded to a family room which was a good size and with plent of facilities.
Check in was not well handled, nobody present and no key. A local had to go and find the manager elsewhere to let us in. Strong smell of fish (its behind a fish and chip shop)
Very good price, comfortable and basic, very good location, good selection of foods for breakfast, very friendly and helpful staff
Facilities quite old and dusty
Friendly staff, close to Hay-on-Wye,
