Friendly and accommodating staff, good breakfast. While the bar was a little limited, there was a very nice quiet room nearby. The restaurant had character. The dinner was very good and breakfast also. An unusual take on porridge!

A TV in the bedroom

The hotel is lovely and set in a beautiful location. The staff were friendly and the food was great. I loved the father / son approach in the kitchen and they couldnt do any more for me during my short stay. Beer and food were great and the views lovely.

The room is a little tired but clean. The wifi did not reach the room meaning I had to use my mobile data during the stay. The electric heated water was a bit quirky but worked ok.

Perfect breakfast, homemade bread, selection of really good quality ingredients and breakfast choice for all. And great butter! Lovely restaurant/breakfast room. Fantastic evening meals too! Really comfy beds. Amazingly good service.

I was actually a little bit warm with the duvet, but I suppose that's unusual in the Lake District.

The breakfast was delicious and just the right portion. The rooms were well equipped. Location was perfect to access local walks especially the Coast to Coast. Nice and clean too.

Perhaps a TV would have helped. Felt a little pushed at times, to order dinner before a specific time and also check out time. Some of us were maybe 10-15 min late in leaving though!

Love the location, food, charm, great pub with rooms

The dogs! I had a dog barking in the room above me all night and then when I left the room to go to breakfast had to step over a massive pile of dog mess. The staff seemed reluctant to challenge the owner which I thought was really bad. If you’re going to allow dogs staff need to be really clear what the rules are.

The location is outstanding for walkers and countryside enthusiasts alike with direct access to some of the finest walking that the Lake District has to offer, especially Scafell Pike. Service was super friendly and fantastic breakfast. Stupidly, we left a large bag of board games in the main lounge. The hotel kindly retrieved these and looked after them until we could get them collected - many thanks.

The staff were very nice. The location was extremely quiet and green. It was truly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.

The location and the surrounding environment were both exceptional. The host was very nice, and the overall stay was amazing.

Not very clean, dirty cups in bathroom. Full of dust on top of surfaces, hairs in and on bed. Floor not being hoovered. Just lacking general cleanliness.

Had a lovely stay. The staff were welcoming and helpful from the start. Food was excellent, as were the facilities, and located in the perfect place to explore Borrowdale/Eastern Lakes.

The room was very comfortable, the food especially dinner was good.

Lack of warmth, staff were efficient but not friendly. The disappointing part was no complimentary water in the room (temperatures during our stay were ridiculously high). No flexibility on dinner times (all seemed a bit rushed and crammed into a short window) and it was full of people doing the C2C and they wouldn’t flex on breakfast time so it was absolute chaos at 8:00am. They just didn’t seem to have any empathy or flexibility on anything - just no.

Our room was very quiet with a good sized bathroom. There was ample storage space and the bed was very comfortable. Only disappointment was that although website says every room has a view..ours had a view of the road and a passageway to the little garden, so we had to keep the blinds down most of the time as any passers by could see in through the big window. The staff were excellent under the diligent & so helpful manager& all worked so hard and so efficiently ..I'd describe them as a well oiled machine! The service in every way was tip top, from the great breakfasts ( a terric range of choices, & hot/ cooked items done to order) to the superb evening meals. The little touches like afternoon tea were appreciated. The only concern that although we booked 2 nights, our room did not seem to have been serviced after our first night, tea/coffee etc not replenished and used very wet towels not replaced. But it was exceptionally hot & so maybe a weary oversight!

The most tranquil and relaxing stay. Room was huge, bed so comfortable, decor pristine. Staff were amazing and helpful and the food was superb.

The hotel was beautiful in a lovely location. The food was fantastic and the service spectacular. Everyone made you feel at home yet it was still a luxury experience. Bravo to the staff and owners for putting such a great travel experience together.

I wanted a clean hand towel change, so in the morning I left it in the shower and the bath towel and shower mat on the towel rail, but on return in the evening the hand towel was still in the shower wet and not changed. Also the tea bags used were not replenished, and there was no complementary water in the room which seems the normal nowadays. Only little things which didn’t spoil our stay, but could easily have been done.

The bathroom had lots of hot water and great water pressure for showers and tubs. They served us scones in the afternoon and tea and coffee was always available in the dining area. The rooms were very comfortable. The breakfast was wonderful.

The dinner was way too expensive and they didn't have any smaller or less expensive dinner options.

The place was luxury beyond expectations. I had no idea upon booking how nice clean and upmarket it would be. The staff were exceptional and the food was high quality

Second stay here and the welcome is always warm. The room was clean and very comfortable. The food was excellent, and the packed lunch was delicious after a tough mornings hiking. Lovely place to stay in the Lake District.

Werkelijk fantastische accommodatie. Alles, van ontvangst, tot avondeten, tot het personeel, tot de kamers, tot het ontbijt, tot de "packed lunch". Alles was echt top! Als we terug naar de Lake District komen , dan zullen we de route plannen zodat we hier weer kunnen gaan slapen!

Ein schönes Hotel mit schönem und sauberem Zimmer. Ein gutes Hotelzimmer nach einem langen Wandertag. Frühstück lecker.

Leider war die Heizung aus und das Zimmer sehr kalt. Auf Anfrage hiess es, dass die Heizungen erst am Abend laufen. Restaurant okay, aber für Angebot eher teuer. Haben in der Region besser und gehobener gegessen für weniger Geld. Servicepersonal zwar bemüht aber eher distanziert. Wenn man auf Booking bucht zahlt man bis zu 35 Pounds mehr pro Zimmer und fürs essen gibts auch einen Aufschlag.

The hotel was well invested, with good food for dinner and breakfast, a surprisingly thoughtful wine offering, and very helpful staff. We have stayed in several hotels in the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District while walking and this is certainly one of the best

The Royal Oak is classy in an understated and unpretentious kind of way. The staff are kind and attentive; the room we stayed in was charming - overlooking the beck; breakfast and dinner were delicious! We’ll plan to stay again.

It’s a small thing, but some of the seating in the lounges wasn’t very comfortable; it looked good but the upholstery wasn’t great.

Old charm to outside of building but newly renovated and modern inside. Good size room with beautiful decor. Good linen and super clean. Breakfast was outstanding!!

This is a fabulous hotel with huge comfy beds, fantastic showers and the food is just brilliant. Little touches like freshly baked scones with homemade jam in the afternoon (free for residents) homemade amazing breads, a different type each day, with tea and coffee from the dining room whenever you want it all goes to make your stay feel like a real treat. It is in a brilliant location to walk from the doorstep and so quiet and peaceful.

The only thing that was a slight issue was that our room, which was lovely and freshly refurbished, had very little storage for clothes, walking gear etc. A couple of shelves in the single wardrobe would easily solve it but this is nit-picking tbf!

The new owners have refurbished the whole hotel. It's lovely, beds comfy, big shower. Food was exceptional, we had three courses. Each day they have a new menu. Staff very friendly and attentive.

We liked everything about our stay.

The rooms were beautiful! The finishing touches such as the boot room & cosy areas were great. The restaurant was beyond our expectations.
