Nice room Good food Great staff
The only thing I can say positive is it’s a nice historic building and the rooms are okish. The drive up to the castle is ok & gardens are so so.
Where to start. When checking in it took 2 members of time over 30 mins to get someone to come check us in as reception was empty. Even then we got told he was busy with one of the members of staffs customer. Who she referred to as ‘my customer’. Our room was in the courtyard which meant absolutely no privacy what so ever as everyone could and did see in. There was a wedding party on the Saturday who were using the courtyard until 11pm so again no privacy. Staff in all bars were beyond slow. In fact I’m convinced there wasn’t any and it was clear the hotel prioritise wedding customers staff over the common customer. So all staff were probs there. The spa itself is not worth going to, customer service was shocking, a relaxation room is basically a closet and you can’t use the other facilities during your stay without booking. Even then all they have is a thermal spa. I will say one shining light was Amanda and Georgina. The rest of the staff made us feel like we were an inconvenience. Having spoken to people since coming back it seems like this is the norm. It may have been worth a visit once but now I’d avoid like the plague.
Locationd and setting was amazing
I didnt like how it wasnt clear that we didnt get use of the sauna with our stay and had to pay on top, we didnt use it in the end as paying £20 after paying 250 for 1 night already was abit money grabbing on thier part
Excellent breakfast, really appreciated the cafetiere of coffee, small detail but such a refreshing change from those machines that produce bland awful coffee. Staff were without exception lovely and the location is stunning, a hidden gem. Didn't eat in the restaurant or bar but will definitely do so when I next visit.
Nothing
Lovely grounds, staff friendly and Spa was relaxing. Rooms clean and afternoon tea in with a Spa package amazing. Evening meal also very nice.
Wouldn't say didn't like, but service at times was a bit slow and advice is to book bed and breakfast as tge cost of breakfast seperately is expensive and not all that good
Excellent location near A1 for breaking journey south. Lovely staff and lovely buildings and site, with lots of history and nice surrounding countryside.
Food was really good but could have been warmer, perhaps due to how busy the restaurant was on the evening in question. Cold beans with cooked breakfast, which was otherwise very good.
The exterior is stunning
The room was so small bedsheets were not clean even the towels were smelly and it was so hot i even can’t sleep whole night
Check prices first, rooms are considerably more expensive if they have a wedding on. Without a Wedding the prices are very competitive
Not much
Ambience, setting, history.
Nothing of note
Beautiful
Liked everything
Grounds of the place interior and staff
Didn't replenish toiletries and some complimentary hot drinks Old wiring the new socket to use for charging was so far away from the bed you couldn't charge and use device same time
The bedroom was comfortable.
Slightly disappointed with the food. Breakfast was very disappointing. Two bowls of tinned fruit and only melon or pineapple that was fresh. The coffee was stone cold and we had to ask for it to be heated up.
The castle itself and its surroundings were beautiful, most of the staff were very nice and polite.
When we arrived there had been a problem with the laundry so we could not check in until an hour later and we were checked in to a dirty room with the dirty bedding and towels from the guests previous. We had tickets to a festival and missed the band we were going to see because of this. We accepted this as these things happen and the staff were apologetic. We was told on arrival we could have late check out the next day, 11am the next morning we were getting changed and ready to leave when a member of staff continued to knock on the door asking us to leave, we explained the situation an were already getting ready, she was very rude and continued to knock again and again as we were in the middle of getting dressed. She then knocked again telling us there would be a late fee added to our room which he refused to pay as of the previous events. We were willing to accept what happened the day before until this very rude member of staff and her poor attitude has left us no option but to write this review. Her customer service skills were appalling and her attitude was terrible, for the price of the room £205 for one night I would avoid this place at all costs now. This happened on the 29.8.26 here are some of the staff members exact words " my instructions to you, you have ten minutes to leave this room under my instructions" she also complained that we hadn't answered the room phone (the room didnt have a phone) is this really how people should be speaking to paying customers for a very expensive hotel?
Beautiful location and gorgeous building and grounds
Room wasn't ready for check in. Small TV in our lounge area kept breaking up, the large TV in the bedroom didn't have a remote so we couldn't work it and despite reporting we never got a response. Meal in Vavasour restaurant, the steak was inedible at £34 for a rump steak we expected better.Buffet breakfast hot items were luke warm
Fabulous location, beautiful property. Wonderful staff
Ok
Wedding venue more important than guests
Fantastic location, building and staff
Staff were really friendly and helpful
Location and ambience
Terrible lack of direction signage to reception. Poor check-in causing gross waste of valuable time due to lost room keys. Poor housekeeping with soiled mattress. Low pressure of shower outlet.
Very grand but could be so much better.
Cleanliness, too many cobwebs and dead flys.
Staff
Nothing
The location, the historical building/ interiors. Great breakfast, lovely staff.
My room was pleasant but a bit small and a bit basic for a 4 star hotel. Low shower pressure, hairdryer was missing.
Absolutely everything the history of the grounds . Amazing decor. Breakfast was lovely. Staff friendly and helpful lady on reception was very helpful and even gave us some history of the building .very welcoming
Everything was perfect
The main building is wonderful - like stepping into a National Trust property. If going for Bramham Horse Trials the location is exceptional.
Poor staff who seemed very inexperienced. Bedroom in the annex was very dated, particularly the bathrooms which needs replacing. Poor experience at dinner - incredibly slow service, poor quality food and inattentive staff. Buffet breakfast - can only ever be disappointing!
The location was excellent
The rooms are very dated and grotty, damp patches on the walls pealing paint, definitely needs refurbishing, no spoon for the tea/coffee.
The castle and grounds are absolutely stunning.
The room. It was call the the orchid. It was so small they had to put the tea/coffee in the wardrobe. I appreciate we booked a standard double but it was nothing like the picture we saw when we booked it. Didn’t use the kettle as it was so old, dusty had lots of lime scale and a broken kettle. The shower wouldn’t tighten so literally had to hold it to get a shower. Would not book this room again. Not what you’d expect from a 4 star and a cost of £150 for one night.
The environment was great. The trees and birds singing were fabulous. We enjoyed the atmosphere and spa.
The mattress was not firm.
The location is stunning
Slow service and the blinds in our room, there was lots of dead bugs, but overall ok
Amazing building
Room a bit small and directly next to outdoor seating area so had to keep curtains closed for privacy
Beautiful location and castle.
Very uncomfortable mattress, it dipped in the middle and you could feel every spring so I had a very poor nights sleep.
Beautiful location, helpful staff, great food.
Beautiful property, lovely location, friend staff on check in and check out
Booked a table for dinner, sat for forty minutes and wasn’t even provided with a menu in that time… walked out in the end and told the staff, no effort to rectify the issue.
Nothing quite like staying in a castle. Lovely place, grounds are beautiful to explore and service great. Room was massive. Loved it.
Overhaul very good experience property and staff at amazing food amazing is it again?😊
The castle, the grounds, the food
Prachtige locatie, omgeving, veel eekhoorns gezien. Mooie kleine boswandeling in de avond mooi verlicht met kleine lichtjes. Vriendelijk personeel.
Kamer was iets gedateerd maar het sliep heerlijk.
This place is breathtaking, explore the grounds explore the castle it’s absolutely incredible
The restaurant staff weren’t the greatest, however the food was incredible and the bar and main hotel staff were brilliant.
Exellant
wow what an amazing place! full of history and beautiful, the staff were great especially nila who gave me a slight tour and brian the maintenance guy was also great and very informative on the history of the place, and the grounds were amazing with peacocks everywhere, amazing!
that i couldn’t stay longer
Location amazing .. peacocks roaming freely..good breakfast
Rooms dated… lack of experienced on bar staff hotel busy when we stayed due to wedding
We had an amazing time. Everything is simply fantastic. The views, the gardens, all the rooms inside just make you feel like you are travelling back in time.
Location and how beautiful the building was
Nothing
The castle it self was spectacular. Enjoyed touring the grounds and seeing the hx of the castle
Getting to the castle was not easy. Came from Canada. Traveled by bus. Had to walk across a dbl highway to get to the castle and getting back into the city was also a feat. If it wasnt for our uber driver we probably would have been stranded on the highway.
Amazing setting
There was a wedding on, so it was noisy and completely taken over by the party. Should’ve reserved the whole hotel.
room
Poop stains in the toilet, shower dirty and sink dirty. Would not recommend
Nothing!
Quiet location, beautiful grounds and outside of ‘castle’ Amazing staff, especially Host Amanda
This country House, or Castle, could use a bit of time and money spent on interiors- Whilst the entry feels somewhat ‘period’, the remaining couple of sitting rooms lack authenticity, could use a furniture refresh with a mix of period, vintage pieces and updated modern clinches or chairs. Overall the rooms felt somewhat lacking in core furniture choices and lacked appropriate art, accessories or lighting that would benefit the overall ambience of interior rooms. Updating the decor with a mix of old and new would match the interior to the exterior. Any architectural details that are no longer original should be carefully chosen as to not appear plastic or out of place with the Castle’s history. Bedrooms were adequate, however bed linens and especially pillows were not the quality one would associate with this type of hotel. The Staff however, especially host Amanda, made the stay very positive and definitely increased the overall eating.
The building was very grand a shame I didn’t have time to explore as I’m sure it would be amazing experience as I live historic buildings and architecture
Very basic, old fashioned room with a castor missing off the bed base! 😂 not the end of the world.
Reception and checking in was a real pleasure and Amanda was incredibly helpful. The breakfast was a buffet style, which was a little surprising giving the standing (price) of the venue. The grounds, the house and hotel are amazing and the history is fantastic.
Have now stayed 3 times, I think, and every time the bar service has been slow, this time there was a settee pushed within 2 feet of the bar, so no real place to queue and or manouver once served. The room itself was fine, but tired, the soaps and shampoos were carry forwards from the previous guest (as they were partially (mainly) used), it was sorted by Amanda. I probably expected more, given the price. All just a little tired and lacking real attention.
Excellent location and a beautiful building
My room was very run down and worn out, it was not cleaned properly especially the bathroom. Very disappointing and extremely overpriced for the room I stayed in. I was woken at 4am by a staff member complaining to another about sorting breakfast extremely loudly outside my room
Very interesting old Castle & grounds. Staff very helpful.
Great grounds
Apart from the grounds it was truly shocking. Filthy dated room. No character the staff was the dregs of the hospitality world I’d prefer a full refund rather than the random £1.24
Fabulous location, the grounds are stunning. Good food and friendly staff.
Lovely building and grounds. Peacocks roaming through garden.
Breakfast quality could be improved
So peaceful with lots of history
Nothing it was all great with fantastic staff,
Excellent location close to A1 yet totally secluded, ideal for travelling with the dog. Excellent attentive and helpful staff, lovely grounds and superb food. Will come back to try the spa.
Mattress could have been firmer.
The place was amazing.
Badly sign posted for reception dingy lighting. Took me 35 minutes trying to find the reception .when I phoned the reception was greeted with a robot telling me the reception was closed until the following morning??????? .and when I did finally found reception i reported this to the receptionist. I ACTUALLY LEFT THE CAR PARK SAW THE LIGHTS AND WALKED TOWARDS THEM ONLY TO BE GREETED WITH A2 FOOT DROP ONTO THE GRASS I FELL OVER .THIS TOTALY RUINED THE EXPERIENCE.
the staff were so friendly and helpful right from the beginning from check in and showing us to our room . our dog was warmly greeted too which was fantastic. our room was spacious and comfortable and lovely and warm. we could only eat in the library with our dog but it was perfect lovey atmosphere and so tranquil and the food was beautiful. the waiting staff were so helpful and did all they could to help and accommodate any requirements for my food allergy. the castle itself is beautiful and full of history and comfort along with some gorgeous peacocks roaming around which added to the beautiful surroundings and views. we really enjoyed our time here and would stay again
nothing
Great place with lots of character Dog rooms are in another building and very large
Dogs not allowed in restaurant do you have to sit outside or in library but it takes ages to get served as no staff
We had an unforgettable anniversary weekend at Hazelwood Castle & Spa. The castle is stunning, full of charm and character, and our room was beautifully appointed and very comfortable. The spa was relaxing and indulgent, adding a real touch of luxury to our stay. Everything from the attentive staff to the delicious food made our anniversary extra special. We couldn’t have asked for a more memorable getaway and would love to return.
N/A
Nice fresh breakfast, friendy staff.
Bathroom not really upto cleanliness standards, dusty shelves between toilet and sink, hairs and dirt behind door. Sourdough on mushroom starter overcooked so it shattered on cutting, very small portion for cost and only one slice of very small sourdough for £10. Hotel overall was very warm.
Staff excellent and very friendly. Location is ideal for if you want a nice quiet location but with easy access to York.
Access to breakfast was in a separate building. Not great if it's bad weather.
Lovely place to stay good location great staff I would be happy to stay again and hopefully soon
Nothing
It was good
I wanted to have a down stairs room but had to go upstairs!
The place is simply amazing peaceful and surrounded by beautiful nature. The castle has lots of history. So beautiful and suggestive.
I liked everything. It was a wonderful experience. The only change I would suggest is to provide a shuttle service for people that have no vehicle since the castle is very much isolated and requires some good walking from the bus stop nearby the freeway.
The room was a superior king sized room located within the main castle itself (excellent for access to restaurant). The room was large and warm with a decent sized bathroom. The Restaurant serving both breakfast and evening meal was faultless from quality of the food to the friendliness and efficiency of the staff!
Only dislike was the mattress, although reasonably comfortable you could feel the springs pressing into you.
A beautiful building that has been carefully updated so that it’s comfortable. This is a venue that deserves to do well. Excellent accommodation.
The large bedrooms are difficult to heat in very cold weather.
Food was excellent
Spa not included, wasn't told about pre booking slots, no staff around, breakfast took ages, staff were rude
Great location, lovely grounds
Stunning location and grounds
But tatty in places
Our room was spacious, comfortable and warm (great on a frosty day!). We had an enjoyable evening meal in the restaurant - although the food was on the warm side, rather than hot. Breakfast was delicious though - and waiting service very attentive.
The outside lighting in the courtyard leading to our accommodation block was inadequate. With steps and uneven ground to negotiate, it made it tricky and a little unsafe to return to our room in the semi-darkness after our meal.
Nice breakfast room, full of character. Lovely hotel overall, good spa.
Breakfast waiting staff weren't particularly friendly, drafty in Breakfast room due to door constantly being left open, no veggie sausages.
Stunning place lots of history and lovely walks beautiful chapel
It needs some older staff to make it a good experience a restaurant front of house would be good just someone who makes your stay special although they try you cannot run a place that offers luxury and good service with young people.
Not the best
Garden and ambient
Beautiful building, lovely grounds. Warm, friendly and approachable staff. Clean comfortable room.
Room was too warm overnight due to heating but obviously this is an individual preference - we just prefer a cool room to sleep in.
The staff were amazingly friendly
I booked a superior room and it was no way superior. The stains on the carpet furniture was old. The shower hardly worked.
Room size
Unstaffed. Spa closed. Room dirty. 10% service charge at restaurant wasn’t even asked if optional, they just put it on the bill. Do not stay here
