Very clean and tidy. Staff were very friendly and welcoming
The beautiful building was very well maintained and spotlessly clean and the courtyard room we had was of a very good size.
It would have been useful for there to have been a way to secure the window in an open position. It was very warm, but we felt we couldn’t have the window open. It would also be good for there to be a door stop to prevent the bathroom door from hitting the chest of drawers each time it was opened.
Great location, extremely friendly staff and a very clean comfortable room
Nothing we didn’t like
Staff were excellent. Rooms were comfortable warm and spotless clean. Breakfast was perfect . Could not have asked for more .
We liked everything 😀
Great comfy beds
Need to bring back the irons. Steamers are good but nothing compared to irons for clothes
A perfect location for our overnight stay for our friends' wedding nearby. Beautiful location, very accommodating staff, comfortable and clean room and bathroom, very tasty breakfast. Stock is such a pretty village, we will find an excuse to stay another time and will definitely stay at the Harvard Inn, to enjoy the area and lovely beer garden.
The Harvard Inn is a wonderful place to stay. Staff always first class and so helpful. Room so comfy and well equipped. The restaurant has a great menu. Good choice of beer, wine and spirits
All good
Everything, my only concern was no fans in the room during the exceptionally hot weather. Hopefully fans can be purchased in advance for next year, as we are sure to see this heat as our new normal! Easy check in, keys given earlier than the actual check in times….perfect.
Nothing!
Very clean room with a very modern bathroom. A huge comfortable bed made for a great night sleep. Very tasty breakfast included with the price.
Check out slightly later (e.g. 11am) would have been preferable

Good breakfast, room was very comfortable. Restaurant staff very helpful.
Unhelpful manager on check-in. We also didn't like being informed at check-in (approx 4.30- 5.00) that if we wanted to have our evening meal we would have to eat straight away.
Village location Room size
Noise from the road Breakfast service not very friendly and.slow, due to lack of staff.
A very nice hotel. Very pleasant staff
The room on the road was rather noisy, I would book a room at the back next time. Feather pillows would be nice.
The staff were fabulous, their interaction made our stay. The food is outstanding, both breakfast and evening meals where top quality.

Lovely staff room was clean and comfortable Breakfast menu was good
All was good
Fantastic food cooked in exceptional temperatures. All staff so friendly and helpful.
No air con but understand is a listed property. Fans provided in rooms.
The room was a Perfect size and Bed was really comfortable....great way to start the weekend, and our wedding up the road at Greenwoods.... a few of our guests stayed here on the Saturday night
The accommodation was spotless, fresh and comfortable. Meals were very good and lots of opinions for breakfast. Staff were helpful, friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
The road was quite busy going past the inn.
The Bar, Restaurant and staff were all good.
The size of the bedroom was too small especially the bathroom. The location of the room being in the car park made sleeping difficult due to returning guests parking their cars and entering their rooms. Vacating our room by 10:30 was fine but being told we had to remove our car from the car park by 11:59 or we would be charged for another days parking was rather harsh
Free secure parking, ground floor room, very clean, excellant shower, Good food.
Sound insulation from busy road - double glazed windows but traffic noise quite intrusive at night/morning - other rooms may be quieter of course.

Good property in a convenient location
Parking was tricky
Lovely rooms. I booked three rooms and they were all lovely with nice bathrooms and spacious showers. Lovely breakfast with good variety. Cereal, yogurt and fruit included in the free breakfast alongside the cooked breakfast which was really good. There was a beautiful young lady in the restaurant who smiled so much . I didn’t get her name but she made us feel comfortable and was patient while our party of six decided what to eat and drink and she still cheerfully brought condiments etc. I know it’s her job but I just wanted to acknowledge her lovely service and show appreciation.
The toilet seat in room 12 was broken and there were a few strands of long hair on the floor. Both my son and my husband are almost bald 😁. We returned to the hotel very late so no time to complain about the seat but they heard staff talking about it in the morning so I’m sure it’d be fix soon. No issues in the other two rooms.
Nice rooms. Neat. Fan available. Big shower. The breakfast was good. Nice variety, cereal, yogurt, fruit, honey and that’s before the cooked breakfast! Lattes, cappuccino at extra charge but you get filter coffee and tea free. Oat milk is available too which was lovely. Also no charge to park and we were allowed to add extra time to our parking registration in case we hang around after checking out. Really good!
The early check-in fee was excessive at £10/hour! In other hotels, I’ve paid £10-£15 to check in early. Never more than that.
Lovely pub with separate hotel entrance, a historic building beautifully maintained. Our room was clean, fresh, quiet and comfortable. Friendly staff and a good breakfast too.
Nothing!
Polite, friendly staff in all areas of the accommodation/bar area. Room was clean and was sufficient for an overnight stay. Dinner in the restaurant/bar was good, perhaps a little excessive on the BBQ sauce for the brisket of beef burger. Serving staff were excellent.
Room was a little stuffy on arrival. Shame the window was not already open as it can only open partially and the weather has been extremely hot. A fan in the room would have made our stay and sleep more comfortable.
Comfortable room, decent dinner and breakfast. Very polite and attentive staff.
Nothing
Accessible room, spotlessly clean everywhere, excellent food and good service from friendly staff.
Nothing
It’s my second time staying here and it was great. It’s a good location in a lovely village, plenty of parking and a warm welcome. I was in room 8 which was lovely. They serve food all day (result after a long drive) and my dinner was delicious, it’s a great menu in the restaurant - the specials were excellent. All the staff were friendly and efficient. A delightful stay!
Minor details as it was a great stay - but Improvements could be the toilet paper (so thin/cheap) and the Nescafé coffee in the room, a hotel of this quality should have better of both!
The rooms were fantastic. Super comfy king size beds, great bathrooms & everything was spotless. Breakfast was superb too. All round an excellent stay in a beautiful village.
Absolutely nothing.
Straight forward, professional and clean.
Nothing at all
Room was lovely, staff were attentive
Lovely setting.
Breakfast was absolutely disgusting. Had to leave it. Not sure who anyone can mess up a full english
Staff were first class. The restaurant was great value, with an interesting and tasty menu.
Pillows were too firm for me.
Friendly staff, clean room, high quality towels and bed linen and very large comfy bed.
We stayed here for State Fayre Festival and it was extremely good value for money for my friend and I. Lovely room, very charming converted stables with comfortable bed with everything you need. Very helpful, friendly staff. Really pretty location and good facilities. I would definitely stay again. Breakfast options were excellent with lots of choice available (plenty of veggie and vegan options as well as full English). We stayed in the little converted stables outside of the pub and didn't experience any noise. We could also park practically outside the door which made it super easy to load and unload the car.
Check-in was at 3pm, which is fairly standard, but despite our room already being cleaned and ready, we were told it would cost an additional £5 per 30 minutes to check in early, which we were told was to cover the cleaning fee. A staff member commented that they would let us in early, but the owner was sat outside and would check whether we'd been charged. It was a little disappointing after we'd been travelling all day to get there, and the room was already cleaned and prepared. We had also contacted them the week before to say can we just access the room quickly to dump our stuff as we were going to a festival and wanted just change clothes. They had replied to say they'd still charge extra. They did, however, allow us to use the toilets inside to freshen up before we headed out to the festival for the day. Oddly, we were given our room key and could access it from 11am - we just weren't actually allowed into the room until 3pm, which seemed a bit strange. Also not the hotel's fault at all, but we stayed during a heatwave, and in the bathroom had a very noticeable sewage smell. The room was very warm, although a standing fan was provided, which we appreciated. Thankfully, I thought this might be the case and brought an additional fan from home which made the room much more comfortable.
Lovely staff, beautiful quiet en-suite room with super king bed as requested, yummy breakfast
It was close to where we needed to be.
Noisy road outside.
Great choice, good size portion. Helpful staff
Nothing
My room was lovely. Clean and a big bed. Dinner was superb with great service. Breakfast was equally nice. Good range of offerings along with juices and fruit.
It was all good
Very friendly staff. Pleasant double room. Excellent breakfast service. Fan available in the room as it was very hot.
Nothing!
Quaint, yet modern
No air conditioning, but that’s to be expected in a period building
The property was clean and staff welcoming and pleasant. The food was also very good. Fresh breakfast that was evident was made with organic produce. Shame we stayed during the heat wave and no air conditioning, but that was outside of their control. I would recommend this Inn to friends and family over and over again!
Very clean. Great breakfast cooked to order. Comfortable beds
Would be good to have a shelf or basket in the shower for shampoos etc.
The building was beautiful, the room was spacious and clean. Breakfast was well made though options were limited. The bar and restaurant were well looked after and the outdoor spaces were lovely and spacious. The location is very convenient if you are visiting Crondon Park as it’s a 4 minute drive and only 20 mins from Chelmsford.
The process for registering your vehicle is needlessly complicated, I felt like staff were somewhat passive aggressive when telling me I had entered my details wrong when I had added 2 nights to my parking for a 2 night stay.
Great food
Staff
Always a lovely stay in this hotel.
Nothing I didn't like.
Lovely, clean room with a comfy bed. Really appreciated the fan in the current hot weather. Great breakfast.
Nothing
Lovely old property, but it’s retained its charm and become a boutique. Hotel absolutely lovely and the staff are all very friendly and nothing‘s too much trouble.
Nothing
The property is beautifully maintained and decorated. The room was spotless and the bathroom looked as though it had been recently upgraded and was pristine. I was there at the beginning of July, ‘26, and it was very warm, a fan was available in the room and was much appreciated. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The bed was comfortable and the bedding was crisp white cotton, beautifully prepared.
The cooked breakfast was lovely, but when I went to the buffet there was no juice left and only a couple of cereal options. It was very basic.
Well situated in a pretty village. Lovely room in the stable block. Plenty of car parking. Helpful friendly staff.
Owing to flights and transfers, I arrived late in the evening but this wasn't a problem. Mark was most helpful and got everything sorted. My stay was just one night, and I left after an excellent breakfast!
On such a short stay, one couldn't express dissatisfaction.
The food was delicious, we had lunch and breakfast and both were great value and quality.
Earlier standard check in time.
I've stayed here a few times now while working nearby. A nice place in a nice village (tho road is quite busy), a few other pubs walking distance and a shop. Nice bar restaurant area, excellent food. Lovely clean rooms and comfy beds. Easy parking

Lovely place with a great vibe and great staff. Great breakfast and super little village.

Very pretty hotel, very clean. Fantastic breakfast. Would absolutely stay here again. Staff were really friendly.
Friendly staff, clean, reasonable prices,
We had an extremely comfortable room, very close to the event we were attending. The staff at the hotel were all professional and friendly, particularly the breakfast staff.
I was perfectly happy with everything.
It was lovey and clean
There was nothing not to like
We could not fault the Harvard, lovely comfortable room, excellent breakfast and dinner and we thought great value for money. Staff were really good and we were going to Hyde Hall which was a short drive away. Thank you all at the Harvard.
Very minor, but we found the car park confusing, at first we weren't sure if it was at least in part a public car park, the signs confirmed that you needed a permit but did not say from where. There was also a sign which told where not to park. We parked in front of one of the 'permit' signs, logged our registration in the hotel and no problems arose so we guess we got it right.
Beautiful building that internally perfectly combined modern functionality with decor suited to age of the property.
Nothing of significance other than perhaps our east facing window in our room no 8) would have benefitted from a ‘black-out’ blind.
Location and great staff
All was good, nothing to dislike
All the food (supper & breakfast) was wonderful.
Staff are friendly and professional. Nothing is too much trouble. Friendly on reception and they can give suggestions on good places to visit, avoiding the not so good. Food was tasty and a fair amount of choice with main meals. The pub itself has alot of character and history. Formerly known as 'the cock'. The room was spacious and clean. We chose the deluxe room and so paid a little extra, well worth the space. Large television in the room with large ensuite. The bed is enormous. I reached over one side and couldn't find the edge of the bed, then reached the other side and couldn't find my husband. No problem at all with any noise from the road (some reviews mention road noise). The pub is in a pretty village. Breakfast was included on our tariff and it was delicious. A few continental choices on the side with a choice of cooked options, including the full English.
The carpark can get quite full during busy periods. There is an overflow carpark in the village if needed- just ask reception. Some of the main menu choices are not clear on what is included in the dish. For example, the 10 oz rib eye steak special did not include any potatoes or vegetables. These came separately at additional cost of £4.99 per side dish. So if you order the steak, that is what you get, a steak on the plate with a bit of water cress on it. That's it. The menu needs to be clearer on the pricing and what you are getting on the plate. The dessert choice seemed quite limited. Lacking in imagination. Needed a cheese cake choice, maybe a cookie pie and another chocolate dish. They are missing a trick here when it comes to desserts and passing trade.
Room was very nice, bed was very comfortable, highly recommend

Very pretty place , so convenient to our venue, staff were very polite , room was beautiful and clean and breakfast was the best I e had in a long time
Nothing
Location. Convenient on site restaurant with good food at a sensible price. Interesting historical building. Level walk in shower.
Restricted hours for collecting key, but instructions very clear and we were able to work around it. Poor lighting in shower room
It was convenient for a wedding. Breakfast was delicious.
We were in a ground floor room in the car park and like to sleep with a window open (it was also hot when we stayed!) but the windows were very open - you couldn’t just have them ajar which felt like a safety risk. The room also wasn’t that fresh - needed decorating, coffee cup marks on the furniture. Also felt that having to pay extra for a latte or milky coffee at breakfast was a bit cheeky.
Breakfast was delicious! Staff very friendly
Toilets in the pub were abit smelly, very strong smell of urine in them
Beautiful cosy hotel with fantastically comfortable bed, friendly staff
I left very early in the morning and it took quite a while for hot water to start feeding through to the shower
Nice hotel in a lovely location. It was very near our intended location
I requested a twin room and was given a double which was a little inconvenient
Really helpful staff, I was able to get my key early and drop my bags off as I had a wedding to attend and wouldn’t be back until late. Lovely room, huge bed and nice bathroom. Tea and coffee facilities were excellent with added bottled water
Curtains weren’t dark enough/black out for me, but I still had a good sleep
Good location for a local wedding venue. Room was very clean. We loved that you could park right outside the room making it really easy to unpack.
Room 14 was a bit small and dark. The bathroom mirror needs an additional light over the mirror. It was really difficult to apply make up which was so awkward as we were getting ready for a wedding.
Spacious, clean and comfortable. Set within the lovely village of Stoke, the Harvard Inn was a doddle to find. Our room (no.11) was well equipped, with a good sized bathroom and adequate space in the room to get ready for the wedding we came to attend. Only gripe was how warm it was, but there was a fan supplied which was put to good use! Breakfast was cooked fresh and hearty.
The orange juice at breakfast - concentrate and sugary - really let down the food to be honest! Also lack of espresso based coffee - all that was offered was filter.
Absolutely everything
Mattresses bit hard for my liking.Mattress topper would have made it perfect but everybody’s preference’s different.
The staff were very helpful and friendly and went out of their way to help

Lovely garden with comfy chairs outside. Historic building which made it more interesting. Good sized breakfast. Staff are so friendly and helpful Parking on site was good. Pretty village location.
Breakfast was great overall… just lacking some pastries A fan was provided in the room, but it was a hot weekend and so air conditioning would have been better as couldn’t open the window for road noise.
Our room was a little dark, but well appointed and very clean. Pillows were a little hard.
It was a very hot night and the window only opened a fraction. I realise this is for child safety but as 2 adults it would have been nice to have been able to open the sash window fully.
The hotel , room , breakfast and evening meals were excellent . But the best part was the staff . Friendly , very helpful and a pleasure to speak to . thank you
nothing - just keep doing what you are doing
Superb food, room, service, parking, peaceful surroundings.
Nothing
Mooie ruime kamer, goed bed, vriendelijk personeel
Erg warm op de kamer, geen airco, veel geluid van verkeer als je het raam openzet
Lovely little pub with rooms, food was lovely and breakfast was perfect and good choice
Good location
Bedrooms good but a bit small
superb breakfast.
It was convenient for a wedding venue in the local area, well serviced by taxis, 15 minutes to Chelmsfords park and ride. This venue has great history and is set in a lovely village . The evening food in the restaurant was excellent
Road outside is busy at peak times, but we were placed in a room at the back overlooking the car park so didn’t really hear the noise.
The staff were exceptional. Very helpful. Breakfast was lovely and the room was very comfortable and had tea/coffee etc which was very welcome.
A slightly earlier check in would have been helpful, but as we knew we couldn’t check in until 3pm, we worked round it.
Room was very clean & tidy
Mattresses too soft
It was a nice location and a nice building. The room was a nice size.
The noise omg the traffic was busy and cars zooming past every 10 mins wasn’t a comfortable sleep definitely should invest in double glazing invest in a thicker door as well as the people in the room next door turned in at 12am and woke us up. Blood on sheets. Dirty floor in bathroom.
The staff were lovely, welcoming and helpful
Great breakfast, friendly and helpful staff, restaurant excellent
The restaurant can get very busy with a lot of non-residents. If we had been warned about this we would have reserved a table.
Breakfast excellent staff very good

Convenient for our stay
Well appointed.
Bar staff did not admonish customers for repeated use of foul language.

Very well maintained
Shame it didn’t have a residence lounge
I don’t think the pictures do the venue justice, I was under the assumption it was a pub with rooms, but its very premium and the staff were all friendly and professional
The Bed mattress wasn’t very comfortable and they need blackout blinds in the bedroom, as it was beaming at 5am and not nice if you have had a night out but wanted a lay in
Nice atmosphere with a local history.
Very basic amenities in bathroom with lack of shelving or units. No bathrobes, body lotion etc. Basics really are expected these days even in a 4star.
