The beds were super comfortable and we appreciated the electric blankets. Great to have a full size fridge in the 2 bedroom apartment. Kitchen amenities were good and we were given suggestions of places to go and things to see. Fresh new carpet and couches, quiet location. Walking distance to local cafe and bakery.
The wifi was rather unreliable and dropped out regularly. The renovation of the two bedroom apartment seems to be unfinished so far, as there was no coffee table or side tables in the living area, inadequate heating and no electric plug in the bathroom. These problems may be remedied in the future.
Especially liked the comfy bed and the spacious room
No heating in bathroom
nice bed, nice bathroom
no oven in common kitchen, but we made do with an electric frying pan and microwave
We were traveling from Nelson and had an easy check in when we arrived. Lisa was amazing. She made us feel very welcome and was accommodating to what we wanted. She prepared dinner one evening that was delicious and a treat. I was celebrating my birthday and received a yummy sticky date pudding with ice cream/cream. We will be back and staying at The Last Resort. Well worth it.
Rained part of the time, but we knew that was expected at this time of the year.
The location and surrounds was like being at a resort i went to in Samoa. The staff were very friendly and hospitable. The food was very good. We loved our comfy beds
I had a yummy lamb shank meal and a baklava dessert in the restaurant that had a roaring fire. The locals who drink here are welcoming and hilariously funny. My darling hubby had the Marlborough mussels with this crispy garlic topping. He was not willing to share with me! He had one of the chef's special of a gluten free almond dessert. The staff were incredibly hospitable and we had a great stay here. Well worth it after visiting the Oparara Basin. We will definitely be back!
Great stay. Love the friendly staff. Food was delightful. Comfortable beds. Thank you Maggie and Staff. Highly recommended.

Had everything we needed. Perfect for a night after finishing Heaphy Track. Free laundry, a restaurant for dinner, comfy beds and a good shower. Rooms are very spacious. Walking distance to shops. Friendly locals who made us feel very welcome.
Nothing.
The accommodation was clean and tidy and comfortable. We had an evening meal at the restaurant that was good and reasonably priced. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Easy parking, kitchen, the locations.
Nothing.
Staff, location, onsite restaurant
Had some trouble with the unusual bathroom lock
Great couple of nights for a group of us on a motorbike trip! The cottage was great with the wee verandah to have a beer 🙂
Always the best as we came for the third time in Last Resort and we shall come again
We stayed the 3rd time in Last Resort and always we enjoyed as much that we wabt to come back.
Very welcoming & friendly. Bar/café was very comfortable with a good selection of food and drinks. Although shower and bathroom facilities were shared, they were spotlessly clean. Nice lounge with cooking facilities and tea/coffee.
Bed was a bit uncomfortable.
Great base for exploring the area. Comfy bed and good to be able to use the communal kitchen.
A little freezer in the fridge would have been good but could use the communal kitchen one.
Die Lage vor oder nach dem Heaphy Track ist besonders gut. Die Zimmer sind ganz ordentlich und neu renoviert.
Wir waren schon zum 2. Mal im Last Resort Karamea. Leider waren das Restaurant und der Service nicht mehr so gut wie bei unserem ersten Besuch im Jahr 2024.
It had everything we needed
The bathroom would be very damp and cold in winter.
Just a great place to stay if you are in Karamea
Loved it all
Space outside.
Brother in law stayed in family room 10 by himself. Smelt mustards no sun.
Clean well appointed for our brief stay

Ideally located in Karamea, the little cottage was perfect for our family for a few days. Good food, good beers at the restaurant. Very kind welcome :)
The cottage was a bit old furnished, but as the beds are comfortable it wasn’t a problem
Proximity to Oparara tour and Heaphy Track
Looked and felt outdated.
Frukost åt vi i grannbyn. Praktiskt eftersom det ligger i Karamea.
Helt ok med tanke på byns storlek.
Perfect location - on the main road so close to everything. Beautiful surroundings, unit itself was excellent and had everything necessary.
Nothing - everything was perfect.
Nice and quiet at night.
La camera e il bagno spaziosi. Il ristorante del resort di ottima qualità
Very welcoming and accommodating staff.. brilliant meals in a beautiful setting.. Definitely recommend Last Resort Karamea to family and friends
Location. Food. Helpful management
Great rustic vibe with a good restaurant & bar facilities. The room was spacious & quiet. Within walking distance to the village & pub & estuary walk.
Good facilities
Only pin hostel, somewhat lonely
Great welcome, lovely surroundings, interesting architecture, nice ambience, magical drinks in evening sun after a long day and a delicious dinner. Thank you
Would have stayed a 3rd night but it was fully booked - our loss.
People friendly with good recommendations
No ensuit for my room
We were glad that the receptionist placed us in a quieter area of the resort, the place was ideal for us as we started the Heaphy Track from the West side. It was great that the lodge has its own pub and the meal was great!
The doors to the room and bathroom were quite squeeky.
Petite chambre simpa, bon rapport qualité prix et idéal pour passer quelques jours dans cette belle région ou venir se reposer après le Heaphy Track. Restaurant excellent !
Very friendly staff. Good facilities.
Big villa , all the things you need when you are away from home
Sadly we could not work the tv , not that you should be watching it when you are away
The tranquility and closeness to nature.
Sandflies.
Nice clean villa
Bed sagged a little in middle
The area, quiet and calm bushes surrounding the area very tranquil
The cottage had skylights that woke us up early which wasn’t good
It was a very practical accomodation. Literally the last resort before the Oparara Bassin. The dormitory is ok, it can be noisy depending on the other guests (also outside). Same for the shared kitchen. Everythings there, but quite limited. So if it is booked out the dishes, pans etc. might be limited. Hard to get a space for your food in the fridge. The Lodge is easy to reach. It's quite a walk or 5 mins. drive to the beautiful beach. The staff very easygoing and friendly. The whole complex quite pretty with its gardens.
Well, it's a Motel/backpackers place. One likes it or not. I can't complain
The room was as I expected. The facilities were better than I expected.
Free laundry, good regional food
Very conveniently located close to Heaphy Track end so stayed here for one night. Good value for money, I just wanted a chill night and my own place to be able to organise my pack for a multi-day hike. Beautiful location, and amenities felt clean.
Arrived at the place when the bar & restaurant seemed to be quite busy with at least one big group so it felt like they didn't really have time to pay attention to customers who were staying over. Check-in felt quite rushed (I had to ask if I would even get keys), felt like they were relieved when I opted out of eating at their bar, and just sorting myself out for dinner. Definitely not the place's fault but there was a water & electricity outage in town in the morning - no one let me know though so this caught me by surprise when trying to wash my dishes in the shared kitchen & brush my teeth after having breakfast. My room shared a wall with the bathroom on the other side of the building and the walls are so thin, it felt like people were showering right next to me.
They didn’t offer breakfast service
The rooms are dated and in need of repair. Mismatched furniture, a curtain missing in the bathroom. Solar sky lights with no shades make the rooms very hot, no air conditioning and with only a poorly working fan to cool the room.
Lovely staff, very clean and comfortable rooms.
Having the restaurant onsite was a treat.
Everything, especially sence of community in Karamea
The location is fantastic, walking distance to supermarket, bakery, café and other pub in the village. Facilities were clean, well equipped.
Dinner was amazing and affordable, top marks for the onsite restaurant. The advice regarding where to get a great breakfast was on point. Thanks so much for your hospitality. We would defiantly return; we were very happy and they more than meet our expectations.
Absolutly beautiful place and awesome staff
Leaving
Dinner was excellent and staff were very helpful and friendly. The shared bathroom can do with a bit of attention, maybe an upgrade.
The shared bathroom. The facilities a quite good, but could do with a bit of maintenance.
Location Friendly stsff
Great location. Loved the use of wood in the room. Comfortable beds.
Great location, nice clean unit where everything worked well. Value for money and imaginative archetecture.
Only one fault is the ramps going up to the rooms are too steep and my brother slipped on one and injured himself in the resulting fall.
I love Karamea and have stayed at the last resort in the lodge rooms on several occasions. It is in a great location.
The lodge is beginning to look more unkept. Soft saggy lump beds which were very uncomfortable to sleep on. I got back ache. No coffee/ tea provided for lodge rooms. Curtains looked dusty, some mouldy (room 12). Black mold around windows. Unfriendly owner.
