Loved the location with the most beautiful, tranquil surroundings. We were made to feel very welcome and the bedroom was large, very comfortable and well appointed. The breakfast each morning was exceptional.

The room was very cluttered with to much stuff in it and the 1ste day breakfast was not good at all.

Exceptional location. Hoekwil is the best kept secret in SA and especially on the Garden Route. The hotel itself is laid out in an art deco style with exquisite pieces of art furniture and decor. The owner Tjaart was a magnificent host. A truly magical place and location.

Some parts of the hotel feel as though it was designed for a different time. Despite extensive investments in satellite connectivity its was slow and intermittent and there wasn't a smart TV in the room the bath tub was inoperable due to water shortages. Using the aircon also proved a bit problematic and we did cause a power trip inadvertently in the middle of the night. But a fabulous stay nonetheless.

The absolute serenity. The location in the valley between the hills and the trees. The atmosphere of the house and the surrounding gardens. The warm welcome.

There was absolute nothing left to wish for.

Magnificent location, swimming pool was spectacular, and very nice room layout.

Confusing food options. Support from staff was inconsistent. Way too much decorations in the rooms that ended up feeling dusty. Lack of transparency with the final bill. Don’t like how the support staff were treated by the owners.

And let’s not forget the river at the bottom of the property! Our canoe adventure to the stunning waterfall was nothing short of magical. Paddling through the serene waters, we felt like explorers (even if we barely made it five minutes without giggling and splashing each other). With nature’s beauty all around, we had plenty of options for activities. Want a thrill? Try the paragliding nearby! The only thing more exhilarating than the view was the heart-stopping moment when we realized how high we were. And if you’re in the mood for a more grounded experience, quaint little markets and shops are just close enough for a leisurely stroll, yet far enough away that your peace remains undisturbed. But what really set Shangri-La apart was the little touches—the attention to detail was impeccable. You’d find snacks lovingly placed around, and the honesty bar? Pure genius! Fantastic place to relax and wind down. The owner was fantastic, the food and service were excellent. I would definitely recommend the Shangri-la to anyone staying in Wilderness.

This is a breathtaking location where you can enjoy quiet time whilst listening to the birds. Privacy of the balcony with sliding doors and full mountain view. The breakfast was delicious and beautifully presented. Tjaart, Mariaan and Steward made us feel special and no effort spared to make our stay an excellent one.

The location of the property is amazing. The personal attention and interaction of the owners makes you feel at home and valued as a guest. If you ever need a home away from home, with all the comforts and peace, then this is the place for you. Absolutely relaxed in the environment, yet close enough to all the amenities.

I would prefer a bigger variety for breakfast, especially the hot meals. And perhaps a bit more of a set menu for dinner.

The Internet was unreliable

Secluded location overlooking a beautiful valley. Large rooms which are attractively decorated. The entire hotel is very attractive.

Cell phone signal isn’t great, so Wi-Fi needs to be tops, which it unfortunately wasn’t.

Juhan and his family went above and beyond for us and our xmas eve festivities. Great service, great food, spacious rooms and a view and setting that really does the name justice. Highly recommend!

The standard all round was fantastic and Johan was so kind and attentive we loved everything.

Versteckt in den Hügeln von Wilderness liegt dieses kleine wunderbare Hotel. Es verfügt über nur 8 Suiten, die allesamt sehr gemütlich eingerichtet sind. Super freundliches Personal in diesem bestens geführten Familienbetrieb. Neben Wasserkocher für Kaffee oder Tee sind auch Kopfschmerztabletten, Mineralwasser, Antimückenspray und eine Minibar vorhanden. Die absolute Ruhe mit entferntem Vogelgezwitscher ist wunderbar. Auf jeden Fall sollte ein Auto vorhanden sein, sonst ist es zu schwierig, dorthin zu kommen. Wer gepflegten Luxus und Ruhe sucht, ist hier absolut richtig.

Wunderschönes Hotel inmitten unberührter Natur. Sehr zu empfehlen! Die Anreise ist ein bisschen komplizeirt aber es lohnt sich sehr! Die Gastgeber sind sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit.

Arrived at Shangri-La down a single track road from Hoekwil and found ourselves in a beautiful place in the forest. We were met by David who gave us a very warm welcome and showed us to our room. Wow - it was huge. There was the bedroom area with two big double beds, the sitting room area with tables, couch, chairs etc. and then a large bathroom area with a shower and corner bath. Then there was the balcony which ran the length of the room with stunning views over the forest. The shower had plenty of hot water, towels were large and soft as were the bathrobes. Toiletries were lovely. Beds were very comfortable. There were tea/coffee making facilities, safe, refrigerator and air conditioning that was very efficient - we just had this on at night, otherwise we had the doors open to enjoy the forest sights and sounds. We also had a complimentary bottle of water each day each. Breakfast was delicious and we had dinner here all three nights which was cooked by our hosts which was excellent. The grounds and garden areas were very pleasant to walk round and we enjoyed sitting out by the outdoor pool overlooking the forest. Furniture throughout the house was beautiful as was the art. Everywhere was cosy, comfortable, peaceful, tranquil, relaxing and delightful. This is a home in which we were made to feel very, very welcome. Loved it and looking forward to returning.

Fantastic manor, you want to know more about its history and glory days. Lovely views, very quiet and relaxing. Good service. Felt a little bit like being in a horror movie though. Sooo quiet and spooky being alone there. Breakfast was ok. Close to hiking trails. Wilderness is cosy with good food!

The Shangrila is an absolute gem of a find. Off the beaton track it offers the highest of standards with its fundermental purpose being to provide guests excellence in service. You overlook the mountains and can observe the piece and tranquility of nature, residing within the wilderness. Yet, at all times safety is the highest of priorities.

Great place to rest and reload. Fabulous surroundings, immaculate decor. Everything is well thought off. No expense spared, no detail omitted to create unforgettable image of perfect place to stay. Wish we knew all this when planning the trip, would definitely stayed there longer.
