Beautifully and elegantly restored house. Kind and helpful staff. Very comfy beds. Delicious breakfast. Really good skin products.

This was honestly one of the most special and unforgettable places I have ever stayed. The experience left such a deep impression on me. Staying in a 150-year-old traditional house allowed me to fully immerse myself in an atmosphere that you simply cannot experience at ordinary accommodations. I could truly feel the charm and peaceful ambiance of Sasayama village throughout my stay. The room exceeded my expectations and made the entire experience even more memorable. It wasn’t just a stay — it felt like stepping into history. Most of all, the dinner kaiseki course was absolutely outstanding. The fusion of Japanese and French cuisine created flavors I still cannot forget. Every dish was beautifully presented and thoughtfully prepared. Breakfast was also delicious and perfectly complemented the overall experience. I feel so grateful that I had the opportunity to visit such a place. If I ever have the chance, I would love to bring my parents here — it’s that special. Highly, highly recommended to everyone. The location is great as well. Absolutely recommend without hesitation!
The staff were absolutely lovely and really made the experience. I really appreciate them going out of there to make a birthday plate for my partner and giving the most incredible recommendations: the pottery shop and amazing café were real highlights of the trip!
Historical atmosphere of the house and neighborhood. Lots of space. Free drinks from fridge.
The bath stone floor gets pretty cold.
Location is generally convenient and close to tourist spots. Dinner was good but breakfast rather simple for the price we paid for a full board.
Kept hitting my head against the beams 😅 no hooks in bathroom to hang clothes or towel.
Stepping into another world. Small town relaxed atmosphere, timbered house lovingly restored to accommodate modern facilities yet retaining the charm of Japanese ambience, tatami mats, sliding doors, bathtub. It was quiet, secluded, excellent for a retreat from a busy world.
It was a shame that the back yard, onto which the room opened, wasn’t kept and therefore not to be enjoyed.

The welcoming of staff
If we are being charge for items not included in overall payment ,We would like to have been advised that it was an extra- in this case it was apple juice.
Authentic Japanese building with modern facilities. very clean. Amazing staff.
The rooms are beautiful and worth the money
The communication needs to improve. Before the stay I received a message with driving instructions to a nipponia hotel in another town than the one we had booked. Upon arrival we had to hand in passports (as the only place during our visit in Japan), the instructions we received were fine, but very practical in nature. There was made no effort in describing the hotel, the history, the restoration, the town, recommended restaurants or local events. I would expect that at a hotel in this price range. Why is this hotel special? Why does it cost what it cost? Instead we were told that the rooms were uncomfortable!? and that Nipponia didn't have anything to do with the hotel.... further we found out the day we left that there had been a local festival in town, but no one had informed us - instead we had tried to find a place to eat the night before but without luck. We were also told that we should book the 7.30 breakfast because the 8.30 would be packed, but when we arrived 8.30 there were no people.
We only stayed one night. We had a large, modernized Edo-era two-story apartment (bedroom, dining and living; toilet and soaking tub/shower) with a private courtyard view in a building separate from our friends in Sasayama Castle Town. We could walk throughout the town with our friends and visit each other's full-sized apartments (complimentary shuttle also available with pre-arrangement). Yukata and jacket to meals and can be worn in town. Ours had Western beds and full private toilet/shower and private soaking tub with garden view. We stayed in early April and Sasayama Castle had a festival and the town was full of cherry trees in full bloom, especially along the river. We should have allowed more time to experience the many shops and tradesmen and Edo history and demonstrations throughout the Castle Town. It was a convenient train ride from Osaka with hotel shuttle, but accommodates driving very well. It worked well in combination with a side trip to Kinosaki Onsen between Osaka and Kyoto by train. The Ryokan meals (breakfast is included, we also bought the dinner) were fantastic and more than we could eat. Emphasis on creative uses of locally sourced in season meats and vegetables including rice and locally crafted pottery. Very creative delicious dishes. The chefs are top of the line! The alcohol and drink selection featured world class local and international options. Several of the staff speak English very well and foreigners and families are welcome.
We loved our stay and the beautiful meal and staff. It was a pleasure.
I think that the rooms could be modernised a little more than they are at present without sacrificing the traditional feel. Air conditioning and insulation in particular.
Efficiency, sustainability conscious, staff, room comfort
The beauty of the room. And impeccable care the staff had for their guests.
Nothing.
Great service by a very hardworking gentleman named Takeru throughout our stay made it even betterl Thank you!
Very authentic and welcoming. We had a wonderful experience getting to know the Japanese culture and tradition. The atmosphere and crew were amazing.
very good service, dinner is excellent.
Thank you very much for a wonderful stay at the Nipponia Sasayama Castle Town Hotel. The staff was fabulous, very attentive and very helpful. I particularly loved the different "set"breakfasts options.
It was both historic and renovated. Absolutely charming. The staff was exceptional and very kind.
I had a lot of questions before my arrival such as best access from train station, how far certain sites were from hotel etc. Via Booking.com’s message the staff was able to answer all my questions. The breakfast was mind blowing amazing - every dish was created with ingredients that’s not usually used such local black beans in the miso soup - such refined taste!!!
It’s a beautifully restored building n I could hear all the conversations going on with reception desk n hotel guest - good thing they closed desk at 9:00 pm. Also there’s gorgeous old wooden beams in the room but it may be hard for people who are tall.
Beautiful room with character and lots of space
We liked everything
Absolutely fabulous hotel. Super welcoming staff and excellent restaurant. Loved everything at this place!
Nothing, perfect place!
Hotel's location is in the historical neighborhood of Sasayama which makes it special. The room and amenities were exceptional. Everything was as described, the staffs were friendly and helpful, the food was amazing.. Cannot expect more from my stay!
There is nothing to dislike from Nipponia!
The location was fantastic. Sasayama is a picturesque town, steeped in history and surrounded by mountains. It is a peaceful and relaxing location. It was a privilege to stay in traditional building that has its own interesting history, and that had been lovingly restored with some modern conveniences added. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. The food in the restaurant was excellent! The traditional Japanese breakfasts were delightful. I hope to visit again!

Extremely helpful staff and will do everything they can to make you comfortable. Also, the building itself is a uniquely renovated space that still preserves the ancient structure and style.
Location.
Dislike walking through the narrow passage way from Level 1 toilet leading to Level 2 bedroom by Climbing on steep staircase. Very inconvenient and Not universal accessible friendly for senior guests or Handicap guests, especially descent the steep staircase.
The location is the best. The service is good. The food is great.
The house was very old, therefore the noises are non-avoidable. You can hear the neighbors and smell the breakfast cooking.
The concierge Ms. Ishigawa Nanami made our short stay wonderful. Probably the best hotel representative I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
Less bright exit lights.
No onsen is the main thing
The food was phenomenal and it was so cool to be staying in an legitimate old home from hundreds of years ago! This property was a banker’s home back in the day.
Exceptionally friendly staff and delicious meals. Very helpful that the hotel has a shuttle.
nothing
Our Villa was immaculate and it felt like a second home. Check in was at the main building which is a beautiful periodic house, it also houses the western restaurant. The staffs were well trained and friendly, to my surprise, they could speak fluent English.
