Friendly staff and owners Large room
Common areas very tired and dirty
Staff very friendly Bedrroom and bathroom very large History of the hitel very interesting
Breakfast only average
Spacious room No 1 - a suite really with entrance hallway and huge bathroom. The location feels remote yet it was easy to get to from the motorway. We loved the history of the place. A bit of Scottish history , we loved staying somewhere that felt different. Food was excellent, home cooked. Lovely friendly staff.
Our second stop over here. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and the hotel is entirely dog friendly. Big, comfy beds and hot showers.

Friendly helpful staff. Great food.

My son and I have just returned home from a two night stay at this fabulous hotel in Leadhills. What can I say? The hosts and staff were so welcoming and friendly. The food was superb and very filling, even for a hungry pair like ourselves. I can thoroughly recommend the Scottish breakfast to set you up for the day and the press coffee was great quality. The rooms and bathrooms were very nice and clean. We found the locals very friendly too which all added to the experience. The bar is dog friendly and a fine selection of single malts was available. Can't wait to go back for a longer stay
The hotel is in a beautiful location, I had a lovely walk around village and surrounding countryside. The room was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was lovely and clearly freshly cooked.
Welcoming, handy location, good food

Very friendly and helpful staff. Lovely evening meal Great breakfast too. Nothing was any trouble. Large room.
Remoteness Quirky Very nice Scottish breakfast Comfortable beds Nice staff
Food was good quality.
Place lacked atmosphere. No background music so could here everyone's conversations. No dogs in main bar area but was OK for a local owner to bring dog in.
Atmospheric building in an impressive, but somewhat bleak, location. Friendly staff and a cosy bar. Our bedroom needed some care in a few areas: some of the light fittings didn't work, the hot water in the sink was sporadic and a few areas need a repaint. Simple, decent breakfast. The village and the whole area are surrounded by lead mining history. There's not much else in the area other than the industrial heritage and hill walking. A memorable visit due to the location and atmosphere of the building, but not luxurious.
Staff lovely, especially the lady who checked us in and served us drinks and food that night. Good value, lovely location with walks all around. Food in the bar was nice homely food.
It's a bit run down and grubby in places. Breakfast all cheap produce with not even a pot of fresh tea or coffee. Wallpaper peeling in room.
Everything about it, old lovely old building
Not much
Very little!
Shabby. Light in room at night - too bright.
the owners where lovely, staff were amazing . Got chatting with some of the friendly locals in there nice outside area after our dinner, it was close to the road but it isnt a busy road so it was perfect with nice views. Would recommend the short rib, the portion was brilliant.
Nothing
Very friendly staff and lovely quiet location.
Breakfast was excellent plenty of choice and well cooked. The location was very interesting , we had never been to this part of Scotland before.
Not having to walk up so many stairs, but help was offered and given This as not a 5 but star hotel but this was offset by the welcome from the staff which was excellent and the quirky character and the History of the hotel and there village.
My wife and I, together with our son and his girlfriend, stayed here for 2 nights over the weekend. The owners and staff were friendly and welcoming. Our rooms were clean and comfortable. The dinner menu has a good range of options to choose from and our meals were excellent. The breakfast buffet (including cooked and continental options) was amazing. The historic hotel is located in the quiet village of Leadhills. Both Leadhills and the neighbouring village, Wanlockhead, have a fascinating history of lead mining and the Lead Mining Museum at Wanlockhead is well worth visiting. Both villages are high in the Lowther Hills surrounded by lovely countryside for walking. Recommended.
We were greeted with a warm welcome and a safe place to store our motorcycles. We had a fantastic Sunday roast and were made welcome by the locals and all the staff.

Location. Property. Staff.
A little run down.
A nice and atmospheric hotel, exactly what you would expect from an Arms Hotel: small-scale, but with friendly and hard-working staff. The food was excellent. The hotel pub is also a great place to relax and enjoy a pleasant evening.
The LED spotlights in the room were quite bright, which made them less comfortable.
We didn't arrive at the Hopetoun Arms under the best circumstances – our campervan had broken down and Andrew and I were tired, stressed and wondering what to do next. From the moment Rachel, Rabbie and Leah stepped in to help, we were treated with such kindness and generosity. They picked us up, offered to drive us back to the service station and genuinely cared about making a difficult situation easier for us. What was supposed to be an emergency overnight stop became one of the most memorable parts of our trip. The hotel is full of character, the views are spectacular, our room was comfortable and welcoming, and the breakfast was absolutely delicious. To add to the adventure, the van broke down again the following day, despite supposedly being fixed! Looking back, what could have been a miserable experience was made so much better because of the warmth and hospitality we received here. Thank you, Rachel, Rabbie and Leah, for going above and beyond. We hope to return one day under much less stressful circumstances and actually enjoy the area properly. Naomi & Andrew
Generous space in bedroom and restaurant. Furniture a bit dated. Good dinner. Very helpful staff.
Good location, not far from the motorway. Bed was comfortable and room quiet even though it overlooked the main road through town. Nice breakfast and staff pleasant and professional. Stayed with my dog and a few treats and things left for him which was a nice touch and a sausage was specially cooked for gim at breakfast.
Room was in the roof space so only window was a skylight. Therefore lacking in any view and natural light. Bedside tables were set against the sloping roof which resulted in my banging my head a couple of times on the wall when I tried to access things on the table. There seemed to be no interior access to the bar; instead we had to go outside and enter through a door down the side of the building.
Great location, excellent food, helpful staff
No AC in the coach house rooms made the room very hot, even with the fan provided.
All staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive. Room was better than expected and they love dogs. Food very good.
If Being picky a couple of light bulbs gone in bathroom which we forgot to mention.
Conveniently located not far off the motorway.
Evening meal was ok but not as good as hoped. Breakfast was quite poor. We were expecting it to be freshly cooked on to order but it was “serve yourself” and had been kept warm in containers for a while. Fresh melon & pineapple was nice though and at least the eggs were cooked fresh.
This was the second time we have stayed at the Hopetoun arms. The staff are incredibly friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Our dog was greeted with open arms and presented with a welcome basket and fuss. All together a really good stay. A comfy room with a huge bathroom. We will come again.
Nothing
We had a really lovely one night stay here. The room was nice and the bed was comfortable. We had an evening meal which was delicious and the lady that took our order was very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was the best I've had in a while. The lady serving the breakfast was so nice and we had a really friendly chat with her about Scottish food ( delicious) and about our families which was very funny. I would love to stay here again we were made to feel very welcome
The shower wasn't great

Location, friendliness, helpfulness and evening food along with cooked breakfast in the morning was just Devine. Excellent choice on the evening menu.
Nothing. All great.
Einfach alles
A homely peaceful, friendly hotel in a welcoming village. Comfortable room, good food, helpful and friendly staff. Can't fault our relaxing stay.
The staff are brilliant.
Breakfast service was good; flexible, prompt and both ladies were professional and served with a smile. More than plenty to eat buffet style, and the coffee was superb (scores extra points). Very comfortable bed, slept well. Good shower.
Wine selection at the bar was limited and, sadly, not very impressive by my own standards.
Team were all so lovely
Great room
Great location. Nice bar and great food.
A lovely hotel set in a quiet village. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and make you feel welcome as soon as you arrive. The room we had was very spacious and we loved the little touches the make it special. The food was lovely and there was a good selection including vegetarian and vegan. It is a super dog friendly hotel where your pooch will be spoiled by all the staff
A unique experience to stay in a traditional pub/hotel in this beautiful location. Staff very friendly and helpful
Food wasn’t great but that didn’t matter
A bit quirky & plenty of character. Helpful & friendly staff
No mirror in the bedroom. Every woman needs a mirror to do their hair in the morning & providing a hairdryer that can’t be used in a bathroom is not of any use.
Great location, hearty breakfast and good choice of dishes in the bar/restaurant.
I found my (single) bed mattress far too soft and uncomfortable so slept badly, I think it needs replacing!
Dog friendly. Good brekkie. Nice pub food for dinner. Lovely back bar we could sit with dog. Easy off motorway but lovely village location - not motorway services! Lovely walk out back of hotel up heritage railway.
Room a bit too hot for us , so opened window and turned radiator off.
The full Scottish naturally. Most excellenty.
Perhaps a few more coffee satchets and milk pots in the room would be nice for us caffeine addicts.
Helpful, friendly staff who, when saw the difficulty my wife had in walking, made disability room available.
Very friendly staff, but the whole property is tired, rickety and shoddy. The worst is that my bed's mattress was like a wedge of cheese with springs poking out both sides, which made it very uncomfortable and impossible to get any sleep. The room was freezing when we went back to it at 8:45pm and there was no heat coming out of the radiators in the morning, until we were about to check out at 8:30am. There was no wifi in our room at all. The evening meal was OK, but the breakfast was appalling with big lumpy caked up scrambled eggs on offer. There was a wee bottle of shampoo in our room with less than an inch in it at the pump didn't even work. Our room had endless chips of paintwork in it. Such as shame as all the staff seemed lovely.
Great location

Warm welcoming
Very friendly hotel, staff welcoming, great stop off.
Got quite chilly in the rooms at night.
Large room with tea and coffee. Very peaceful
Room was a bit warm
Staff great. Food good value. Room clean and siacious.
Amazing hospitality very kind staff highly recommend
All good, good food, friendly staff, always feel at home there.
Water not very hot in the morning - room 2
Heard there was a new menu being launched today, so decided to treat ourselves - we have not been disappointed. The menu caters for many tastes including, vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. Reasonably priced food which is delicious, well presented, ample and served with a smile. The cozy fire in the lounge is just a bonus to the ambience. Definitely worth a visit.
Very pleasant village high in the hills off the M74. Very homely dining room/ba. Good quality breakfast and evening meals.
Entirely happy
Food was amazing and been there for 2nd time was even better than the first
Nothing could be better all in all excellent experience
The breakfast was excellent. The staff were so helpful.
Lovely warm welcome, staff were very accommodating and helpful with a late check in. We will definitely be returning! Fab whisky too 😄 100% recommend
A very warm welcome, friendly staff all across the hotel. Our dog was made to feel very special. Our room was a great size, with a big comfy bed and a good sized shower room. We also received a dog box, with towel, poop bags and some treats which was a lovely touch. The pub at the back of the hotel was very charming, and served an amazing dinner. Breakfast was also very good quality, a self service style but also could have items cooked on request. Location was perfect for the drive between England and Scotland, not too far from the motorway. Good green space at hotel for our dog too.
Nothing.
Das Hotel stammt aus dem 16. Jahrhundert.
The bars, the staff and accommodation was just what we needed and the walks around the property were lovely 👍

Staff were very helpful and very friendly.
A little tired and food was not great.
The welcome we had by the staff was great. The room that we had was clean, warm and very comfortable. The food served in the restaurant was delicious. So all in all we had a wonderful stay at The Hopetoun Hotel.
Lovely rooms and staff
Friendly staff beautiful room big bathroom lots of character felt like I was people in Scotland! Open fire in the bar! Excellent breakfast. The biggest vegetable and cheese omelette ever! And very tasty
The emergency green light really spoilt my sleep! Soap in a bottle kept squirting onto the floor. Drainage in basin very slow What is it with no marmalade,? I didn't ask for some this time as everything else was so good but I do like it!

Quiet, rural location. Friendly, helpful staff. We are pensioners and appreciated the ground floor room.
the location was excellent- the food superb and the staff very welcoming and couldn't do enough for you. Would definitely recommend and hopefully return.
Superbly refurbished hotel in Leadhills, highest hotel in UK. Old features have been retained downstairs, bedrooms are modern, lovely and comfortable. All at competitive prices

Personeel waren heel erg vriendelijk en behulpzaam. Kamer en badkamer waren ruim.

Location excellent
Rooms need updating
Fantastic food yet again. Great friendly atmosphere, and welcoming staff The chilli with loaded nachos was stunning (The food is always great) Highly recommended
A warm, welcoming, family-run business. We went to the Hopetoun without a reservation, and sat in the main lounge area which was very cosy with a well-tended open fire. The back bar is incredibly dog-friendly (treats for all!) and the full menu is served in there, which is a bonus. We tried out the new menu, which has a great offering for vegetarians, including one of the board specials. Everything is freshly prepared and homemade - and it really shows that it's created with heart! We enjoyed the venison and chorizo chilli, and the pheasant supreme was absolutely delicious. Our 3yo daughter polished off the feshly battered and crispy kids' fish and chips, and we were treated to kind, considered service throughout. Prices are reflective of a rural hotel, with everything homemade, and we were happy with our bill. We'd recommend giving this great new menu a go and to embrace this small, independent gem in the middle of the stunning Southern Uplands.
Really comfy big bed, lovely room, great hearty food (enjoyed the pheasant), friendly helpful team (thanks Sarah, Rab Co.). What more can one want!? As the team say: middle of nowhere, historic building and small town, superb for walking, breaking journeys and discovering an area of Scottish heritage. Nothing 'cheesy' here, the decor and food is done with care and love. Finish the evening in late autumn and winter in front of the open fire on the sofa with a dram. As Rab says: a snowy winters night, with a dram, the fire roaring, passing time with like-minded old and new friends! Heaven. Summer, outside under the long Scottish light nights, the same. First stay at Hopetoun, certainly not the last. I have found our two 'go-to' havens and the short distance from the m'way helps one find peace from a journey. My French family will love it here too. See you again soon. Slainte.
Staff go above and beyond to make sure your stay is an enjoyable time
Yes it was extremely pet friendly
Great location for what we wanted, excellent food and a very comfortable room. The owners are lovely.
We stayed at the Hopetoun Arms overnight on the way to Skye last month. We had a warm welcome on a rainy afternoon, a lovely room with its own vestibule, (where we could sit and have tea and coffee) and a great evening meal in the bar - the fish, chips & mushie peas were excellent. The beds were comfy and the bathroom spacious & well equipped - think it was Room One. Breakfast the following morning was plentiful - we had "the full Scottish". We'd definitely return and maybe spend more than an overnight if possible. Leadhills has so much history and character, plus the surrounding area is beautiful, remote-feeling and looks good for cycling and walking. Thank you to All at Hopetoun for a great little stay.
Lovely location....great big room.. welcoming staff.

A real find. Neat, friendly, lovely quiet Hotel & Restaurant. Food, Staff and location are all excellent, very good value for money. Third time staying the HAH never fails !!
The history. Breakfast.
Food and drink only being served from 5-8, after travelling hours to get there, you’d think the bar would be open for refreshments.
