Dunes Unawatuna Hotel

I loved everything about this hotel, it looks like a boutique hotel but with affordable prices. Everything is worked out to the smallest detail. Everybody will make you feel like home!

We loved our stay here! The location is fantastic, right in the center of excellent cafes and restaurants. The staff were lovely and incredibly helpful throughout our visit. Despite being so central, the property is a peaceful oasis. It was so quiet and wonderful to wake up to the sound of birds singing.

Die Zimmer sind traumhaft schön, ebenso der kleine Garten. Eine richtige Ruheoase mitten in Unawatuna.

We stayed 4 nights and we loved our stay there! The service is very good! The guesthouse is super beautiful! Our room was very comfortable and charming! The garden café is very relaxing and very good! We could see beautiful monkeys several times ❤️ We totally recommend this guesthouse!

The room was clean and spacious. I really enjoyed the private bath too. Overall the atmosphere was calm although at a time the noise from the neighbouring house was a bit disturbing.

The entrance to my chalet/ room was muddy and slippery since it was raining. It can be improved easily with som stepping stones. That's the only issue.

Best place we stayed and great service.

Our double bed was 2 singles, other than that perfect.

Zwar nicht direkt am Strand aber dafür ein sehr schöner Garten und ein Zimmer und Badezimmer in dem uns nichts gefehlt hat.

Ontzettend mooie kamer. We hadden een upgrade gekregen waardoor we beneden zaten bij de tuin. De tuin is ook prachtig. Het hotel vonden we veel mooier dan op de foto's. De kamer was brandschoon en zeer comfortabel. Heerlijk bed, koffie/thee faciliteiten, water kon je gratis aanvullen. We hebben in 3 weken Sri-Lanka zo'n 7 hotels gehad en dit was de eerste waar schoongemaakt werd, elke dag. Wij waren aangenaam verrast over dit hotel, hebben er 2 nachten aan vast geplakt. Je staat met 5 minuten op het Unawatuna strand, je kan ook naar Jungle beach, wij deden dat lopend via de jungle, leuke hike, goed te doen. Het was een zeer aangename afsluiter van onze vakantie. Tip: ga tegen zonsondergang naar fort Galle! Je kan daar ook leuk winkelen!

Het had fijn geweest als er een mogelijkheid was voor een compleet ontbijtje (toast, ei, jam, koffie, fruit) Je kon nu alleen losse dingen bestellen, wij vonden het vrij prijzig en heel zoet (pannenkoekjes en french toast). Omdat het low-season is, zijn er in de omgeving ook niet veel ontbijtmogelijkheden.

It’s walking distance from sea. In a beautiful coastal village with tiny shops everywhere. But the accommodation is far from any noise. As if in a jungle. Beautiful bathroom. Aircon

We recently stayed at Dunes Hotel for 3 nights as part of a wedding group. The hotel itself is lovely and it was a great setting for the celebrations, so it’s disappointing to be writing about the way our stay ended. It was only at checkout that we realised our room had been charged at double the rate of the other rooms within the same group - including my mum’s, my sister’s and her friends’ bookings. Ours was the only room at this significantly higher price - approx £128 a night when it should have been £30-45 While I understand that rates can vary, particularly if booked via Booking.com, the discrepancy only became apparent when we were settling the bill and comparing with the rest of the group. Paying double for what was essentially a comparable, fairly average room felt disproportionate, especially given the 12 of us were all attending the same wedding and staying for the same dates. The front desk staff were polite and tried to assist, but we were advised nothing could be adjusted. Given the level of business our group brought to the hotel, we had hoped for at least a goodwill gesture or partial reduction, but this was not offered. Overall, it’s a nice hotel and we did enjoy parts of our stay. It is certainly not worth > £100 a night however, and whomever controls the dynamic pricing for these rooms is predatory. We booked it though so shame on us!

Wunderschöne Unterkunft mit tollem Garten. Wir haben sogar ein größeres Zimmer bekommen, als wir gebucht haben. Das Personal war sehr bemüht. Als unsere extern gebuchte Tour spontan abgesagt wurde, hat uns das Personal vom Dunes ganz spontan eine Alternative organisiert. Vielen Dank!

The property is a super close walk to the beach strip with all the restaurants. It’s also beautiful and in nature. A very unique and authentic stay. The staff are kind too! There are bugs but it’s totally unavoidable as the resort is in the middle of nature. The owner clearly tries to minimise this with mosquito nets, mosquito repellant plugged into the room too and the daily cleans. It’s worth saying that I didnt actually get a singular bite out there despite it being in nature! Bring some deet and you should be fine. We were also upgraded to a nicer room!

The food in town is better than the food we tried at the restaurant. It’s nice at the hotel restaurant and very beautifully presented but much better and more flavoursome in town.

It felt like a wellness retreat in the jungle. The property and rooms were absolutely stunning. Staff were very friendly. Very close to all shops, cafes, beach in Unawatuna.

Nothing!! Unfortunately during our stay there was a lot of power cuts but this was out of the hotels control.

I loved the fact that you are so in nature in this hotel. Waking up to the sound of monkeys and birds was the highlight! The hotel is beautifully decorated and made with old wood, you feel like you’re staying out in nature. Even being on the main road, you don’t hear a thing! The staff are very friendly and I would come back :) also the wifi is excellent!

Perfect stay for nature lovers who still want to stay in the city center. We stayed in the Studio and as we walked in it was an instant wow factor, pictures don’t do the justice how beautifully designed the room is. As a birdwatcher I absolutely loved staying on a swing near the pond and watching kingfishers hunt. There are so many birds, palm squirrels and monkeys, so tranquil. But as it comes, if you enjoy nature at day, you get to enjoy it at night too 😁 yes it is loud at night and I did wake up a few times due to some creatures screaming on the roof, but it’s all part of fun. You also have a lot of mosquitoes due to the pond, so make sure to use repellent thoroughly and you will be fine. The owner and the team were super friendly. I loved this stay and would recommend it.

There was a planned power cut at 08:30am on our check out day, which we were not informed of. Having hair conditioner and a rack to dry clothes outside would be a very nice add on.

I loved my stay at Dunes Unawatuna Hotel, probably my favourite accommodation I stayed at in Sri Lanka. The location felt private but within walking distance to the beaches and restaurants. The room was lovely and super clean. Great food options on-site too!

The place offers a bit of calm and quiet despite being located very close to beach and a busy road. Amenities were good and cleanliness was top notch. Breakfast options although limited, were very generous.

From the very moment we stepped in to the place, we weren’t made to feel welcome. The place should highlight that they don’t want young kids to stay at their property. They were very hesitant that we showed up with a 4 YO (irony is I chose the place reading some good reviews from families visiting with kids) who might scream and scare away the animals. We also had to wait a good 30 minutes for our rooms despite letting the property know that we’ll arrive a bit early and requested for early check in if rooms are available) and had to settle our room bills even before we saw the room- which was still fine except that I didn’t like the tone they used with us. To keep us close, they gave us a room upgrade with one of our rooms and were boasting that they gave us a higher priced room. Place is not well lit and can get a bit scary at night to move around. Overall - not coming back to this place solely for the way we were , particularly my kid was treated.

Great location in unawatuna, close to the restaurants/bars and the beach. The rooms look really charming and have everything you need. You get a lot of value for money.

I really liked the room; though it was small, it was very clean and well-kept. The property has a garden with a great eco-friendly layout, making it feel like a peaceful retreat relatively close to the beach. The staff were also incredibly friendly and welcoming.

The room experienced some exterior noise during the day, but it was very quiet at night.

It was a perfect guest house with all amenities with a great price/quality ratio. Breakfast options were also plenty and the main guest attendant was extremely helpful and very service-friendly.

Superfint och charmigt hotell. Rent, fräscht, modernt. Skön säng, bra badrum, bra duschtryck. AC fanns & minibar. De lånade ut strandhanddukar och man fick även fylla på vattenflaskor!

Det var väldigt lyhört. Djurläten och sådant kan vara charmigt men jag hade rum på nedre plan och jag hörde i princip allt som gästerna över mig gjorde. Värst var när de gick runt, flyttade på saker. Så om jag bor igen så blir det 100 procent på övervåningen för allt annat var toppen!

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. It’s a very cute place with a lovely jungle atmosphere, which makes it feel special and relaxing. The whole setting is charming and beautifully designed. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the location is great as well. Overall, I really liked the vibe of this hotel — such a sweet and unique place to stay.

In bustling Unawatuna this place is an oasis of calm. We had a balcony room which was lovely and well thought out with lots of thoughtful finishing touches. Bed was super comfy and good shower though the bathroom door isn’t a proper door so earplugs for ablutions if you’re not too familiar with your travel companion! We loved watching the monkeys who sometimes landed on our roof!

The narrow wooden stairs to our room are a bit challenging for the less able…

Lovely interior and design. Also even though the hotel is on the main road through unawatuna it feels like a little hide away. There is a quite garden and you don’t notice that you are in center of Unawatuna. Also the beds were really good and had a good breakfast!

Das Zimmer, war dunkel, Bad Fenster nicht zum öffnen und den versprochenen Garten Blick hatte man auch nicht aus seinem Zimmer. Dies ist wohl nur in den oberen Etage gewährleistet. Wir waren enttäuscht.

Amamzing place to stay, in the middle of beautiful garden full of flowers and animals. Very good design, very cosy rooms with big comfortable beds and beautiful outdoor bathroom. Very kind personal, imaginative menu. Place where you forget the troubles of everyday life.

The room was spacious, the food was very good and the staff were great.

It was okay, nothing special in comparison to other places I’ve stayed this month in Sri Lanka.

Lack of personal touches. There didn’t seem to be enough staff to handle all the large groups that came in.

Die Unterkunft ist eine Oase die zwar sehr zentral gelegen ist, man aber von dem Trubel nichts mitbekommt. Es ist ein ruhiger wunderschöner Ort an dem man sich gut erholen kann und das köstliche Frühstück im Garten genießen kann. Das Personal war immer sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend. Die Anlage lädt zur Erholung ein und bietet für das Auge und den Gaumen alles was man sich wünschen kann. Die Zimmer sind immer sehr sauber und es war alles da, was man für einen schönen Aufenthalt braucht. Wir freuen uns schon auf den nächsten Besuch!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Dunes. The hotel is set back off the main tourist street in Unawatuna and is nice and quiet, set amongst the wildlife. The outside shower was a great experience and the breakfasts were delicious.

One small criticism is that we could easily hear our neighbours through the walls (and they weren’t being particularly noisy)

Alles! Es war unglaublich erholsam und wunderschön. Die Zimmer und die Anlage sind mit so viel Liebe zum Detail gestaltet worden. Das Frühstück war hervorragend! Wir können nur jedem empfehlen hier zu übernachten. Ein Traum!

Mysigt ställe mitt i Unawatuna centrum, på vägen ner till havet men ligger lite bakom så det är ej störande men nära att bara gå ut till gatan.

Centrally located in Unawatuna, but has a peaceful, secluded garden which feels very close to nature. Very comfortable room and lots of amenities (breakfast, beach towels, etc).
