Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Breakfast was copious and varied with many different options. My room (family room on a top floor) was bright and one of the quietest rooms I have experienced.
The bed was comfy. The room was small but that was reflected in the price. The shower was great.. It was very convenient, with the hotel being close to main shops and pubs.
The lighting was really bad. There needs to be lights close to the mirrors for makeup application and hair drying.
An ideally situated Hotel in the heart of village. Room was large and clean and breakfast nice. Would definitely stay again.
All the staff were really nice and helpful, the breakfast was very good and plentiful. The location was perfect, only 2 minutes to the town centre shops, market, cafes and pubs and 5 minutes from the lovely river walk.
The general maintenance could have been a lot better. We had room 1, the steps leading to the room, the handrail needed attention due to possible splintering. The bathroom was generally clean but the shower badly needed attention due to black mould, handles on the windows were loose and to operate the television, which was on top of the wardrobe, we had to go right up to the television to operate it? We didn't use the pool so cannot comment on it but the outside of the windows looked like they have never been cleaned. Overall we did enjoy the stay but the property is not worth £125 a night
Location in village with private free parking
Basic
I love staying here, its welcoming and cosy
I like the location, the pool. The breakfast and the staff are lovely
I'm rating Seven Stars as excellent as I'm so very impressed with the kindness and honesty I received from them. A couple of days before my stay there I received a call to say that due to a plumbing issue they could no longer offer me the room I'd booked but has found me a room in a nice B&B just a couple of doors down the road and that I was still very welcome to use the Seven Stars facilities such as the swimming pool. I was only staying overnight but really appreciated this. When I arrived, I received a great welcome from Seven Stars staff and was escorted and introduced to my B&B host. The B&B accommodation was also excellent. It was an outstanding and encouraging demonstration of community in Hay-on-Wye and I felt so well looked after. Thank you.
Nothing to dislike
Friendly staff, clean and tidy, captain the dog was a bonus!.
Nothing we didn't like but maybe a mat to go in the bath would have been handy.
Excellent location
Very good location, parking a bonus and very good breakfast - including gluten free
the staff, the location, the pool, the breakfast were all great
The bathroom was a little bit tired in places but functional
Very central location good parking and a small relaxing pool. A good variety for breakfast.
Decor. was tired and in need of updating. Pool towels would have been beneficial.
Great stay at the Seven Stars, perfectly located in central Hay on Wye. Fantastic to have parking, rooms were neat and clean. Standouts were the breakfasts and warm welcome from Di and especially Captain! Will definately stay again.
Breakfast was ok
Small room, noisy, uncomfortable bed, awful shower. False advertising - the picture advertising is a completely different building - Hay castle, not the Seven Stars.
Breakfast excellent and staff great
So close to the action! Owner was particularly friendly and helpful, found us a great room next to the pool so we had private use of the pool for an hour in the morning and Olly advised us on where to eat in the evening.
Nothing to dislike
Good location, car park
Bedding didn’t fit the bed, looks in need of care attention
A great breakfast
The shower
Central location. Dog friendly. Free parking. Flexible check-in.
Decor is a bit tired.
Friendly staff. Excellent breakfast. Free parking.
Location was good and so was the breakfast ( meal).
We seemed to be second to the dogs. We had to wait for the dog (captain) to get off the reception's legs Our room was above the swimming pool via metal stairs. These were uneven and the wooden handrail was splintered. At approx 1.30 am a motor came on and woke up. It ran until we got up for breakfast. We checked it was not the fan in the bathroom but it sounded like it was coming from the pool below. At breakfast a number of guests brought their dogs into the dining room plus Captain. There was so much barking and growling it was hard to enjoy the start of the day or breakfast. When checking out of the hotel the women on reception found ways to tell everyone checking out of her terrible year and loss. I would strongly suggest that she seeks counselling, as it sounds like she has had a terrible experience and is ready to talk but in the right, private environment, and not to unprepared strangers.
The location was spot on. Breakfast first class
Nothing in particular. Very old beautiful building so floors are very uneven
The hotel is conveniently located in Hay-on-Wye and for breakfast offered a wide choice of locally sourced produce. The staff were friendly and helpful and we made good use of the heated swimming pool.
The owner, breakfast and room were excellent. Particularly liked the early access to the pool and the prime location.
The location was brilliant
The room was compact
Third stay and that says it all.Breakfast exceptional, best I've ever had.
The location and parking. The very good breakfast.
Wi-Fi did not work in our room. Flow of water in shower was inadequate. Breakfast did not start until 8.15am and too many dogs at breakfast, Captain, the resident dog not included.
Really friendly staff. Loved being able to take our dog to breakfast and that they offered to cook a sausage for her. It was very easy to get on the riverside walk. Other nice walks nearby.
Needing to have a member of staff be in the pool area while I was swimming put me off using the pool.
From the moment you arrive, greeted wonderfully and everything explained, check in was easy, breakfast was stunning, Staff were wonderful
Nothing
Good central location in Hay-on-wye with parking. Very friendly staff and accommodating, finding me an extension lead to help with hair for a wedding we visited. Tasty breakfast. Sadly forgot the swimwear but exciting it also has a pool!
Rooms on smaller size but ok for our needs
Hôtel très bien situé pour découvrir le village à pied, petit-dejeuner consistant, très bon accueil
Lit trop petit et trop mou
Great staff and position Great period pub
Flat beer tried three taps , flat in under five minutes Mattress , thing it was there when the pub was built
Staff were very helpful when I needed to book in outside of the published hours due to traffic delays.
Extremely narrow entrance to car park and very difficult to park/manouvre when only a few spaces left. My bedroom over the swimming pool was only accessible via precarious wooden external steps - very narrow with no back to the treads. Awful to use in poor light. Hit my head on protruding guttering at the top of the stairs. Bed was uncomfortable, and I could feel the springs. Bathroom skirting boards needed a clean. If I was staying more than one night, I would have found alternative accommodation.
A gorgeous 16th Century building, spacious room and a pool for guest use! Breakfast was wonderful, and the location was right in the middle of the town, easy to walk everywhere!
Lovely comfortable room.
.
Super friendly host (and dog), charming period property with an excellent location just outside the town centre. Lovely breakfast (try the herring!). Very helpful to have parking onsite and an indoor pool was a bonus.
We chose the smallest room (only one available). For us (6”4 & 5”10 respectively) it was a little tight.
Swimming pool, the area, Captain
Having to leave
Loved the room was so homely , pool was so warm and nice and breakfast was delicous , couldnt ask for a better service they were so welcoming and friendly.
We really enjoyed our stay at 7 Stars in Hay on Wye. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable, parking was good. The swimming pool was a nice bonus. The breakfast was very good. We were made very welcome.
There were not many options if you wanted a continental breakfast. This didn't really bother me as the other options were good. We are not used to English breakfast, so it made a change for me... my wife just had toast and fruit which was fine.
The location excellent, breakfast really good, poached eggs done to pefection, staff really attentive and lovely xx
There was nothing i didn't like
I had a fantastic stay in the Seven Stars. Location was great, staff were very friendly and helpful and breakfast was great too (Captain the dog was of course a highlight) Parking was a good asset and the building was as described and authentic.
Habitación amplia y limpia. Por la noche se ven todas las estrellas desde la ventana. Dispones de un ventilador (nos pilló con la ola de calor). El desayuno y la gente que te atiende son muy agradables.
Fantastic property in the best possible location. Great hosts and amazing breakfast. Thank you so much, will definitely visit again soon.
swimming pool is a bonus and a bliss in the heatwave
one of the windows didn’t shut properly
Excellent location and lovely staff, everyone very friendly, accommodated our parking request and offered reservation for the pool when we booked!
Nothing, a great find and very good value for money in the centre of Hay on Wye.
Great location, lovely breakfast and free on site parking included.
Wifi a bit hit and miss, good in main house not so in our room.
Great old character building with lots of charm and original features. Fantastic location for exploring Hay on Wye. We loved the swimming pool which was much needed on one of the hottest days of the year! Staff were fantastic and very friendly. Our room was small but it was a good price and had great views from windows of clock tower.
The low ceilings up in the roof where you had to watch your head. However it is part of the character of the building.
The staff are so welcoming and the use of the pool was a nice bonus in the hot weather. I ordered the smoked kipper from the local suppliers for breakfast and it was delicious.
It would have been lovely if there were some comfortable garden furniture to enjoy the outdoor space at the hotel. The wooden picnic bench and plastic chairs available are very old and uncomfortable.
The location was excellent and the owner very friendly
We couldn’t use the pool as one of the staff shut it an hour early on first night, we also had a very small room on the second floor.
Seven Stars is in the centre of Hay on Wye and is a nice, clean, little place that offers great service for a good price. The room we stayed in was rather modest and small, however it had everything we needed, and it was clean. If you don't want to pay a lot and still want to stay in a nice place, that is the place to go. Also, they offer free parking and a great cooked breakfast! We loved it!
We absolutely loved our stay at the Seven Stars. The room we were in was so lovely and comfortable, the location absolutely cannot be beat, and the staff were so friendly and helpful. We can’t wait to come back and can’t recommend it enough.
Nothing. It’s absolutely adorable.
Excellent location in town yet walkable to the River Wye. Has own off street parking (beware of narrow entrance!). Nice room. Very good breakfasts. Friendly hosts. We didn’t use the pool but other guests seemed to enjoy it.
The charming welcome and delicious breakfast.
The location is excellent
We were on the top floor so lots of stairs
The location is very good , a short walk from shops, bars and restaurants. Parking is a plus. The breakfast was good.
We had an extremely long journey and were glad to arrive. Unfortunately for us, there was nobody at the reception to check us in, just a note saying 'back in 10 minutes.' In fact there was not a soul to be seen. I needed the bathroom after a long drive, but a note on the downstairs bathroom suggested we used our en-suite, which, of course, wasn't possible. We walked to a near-by pub. This wasn't the best start. Our room was small and hot although we did have a fan. We were at the front of the building facing the road and clock tower.
The staffs are sooo nice, locate is great! Breakfast is very nice. I will book it again next time when I come to book town. Just so convenient!
As the property is very old, so the sound prove can not be good. But i still like it. Rest of the B&B is just perfect!
Excellent breakfast.
This is a home from home. Staff couldn't do enough and the room was perfect. So clean, comfortable and the breakfast was perfect. I will be back again! Thank you all especially Captain the dog X
Great location. Was made to feel eally welcome on arrival and great advice about where to go, eat and drink. Room was excellent really comfortable with a great bath and hand held shower. Did not use swimming pool but safety sheets and temp of pool available. Breakfast was excellent plenty of it and fresh and hot. Would definitely stay again and would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.
Nothing
Nice big fans in the room to keep it cool
Location and room . Breakfast v good
The breakfast was excellent. The hotel had a pool that we used to relax. The hosts were super nice. The views from our room window were incredible.
The bathroom was not that big, but it was just fine for us.
Breakfast was excellent, staff very friendly and helpful
Very friendly attentive staff Excellent breakfast
Room could do with a refresh Bed needs new mattress Door difficult to close without slamming Drainage smell in the bathroom Toilet flush button catching and getting stuck
Central ,nice quiet room at the back
Quaint
Piscine à l'hôtel
Very friendly and nice staff. Excellent location. Good value for money.
It was in line with expectations. Nothing negative to report.
Convenient location for all the shops. A nice touch with a box of chocolates and a birthday card for my husbands birthday. Breakfast is a very generous size and GF is catered for on request.
One of the reasons I chose the accommodation was because of the swimming pool. Even though my husband used it he said it was too hot. the weather Temperature outside was around 33° the pool temp is 31° so wasn't comfortable at all. We bought this up with the host but she seemed a bit put out we even said anything about it even though other people in the room agreed with us. Our room was above the swimming pool and was quite small. We think the drains in the bathroom are blocked or needed cleaning out as there was a smell ...this stopped when we pushed the sink plug down. (No it wasn't the farm yard smells that we were also getting which was unavoidable). The floor in the bathroom was also dirty and stained as was the skirting board under the radiator in the bathroom. The host does have a dog who is very friendly but is allowed to wander through the breakfast room while people are eating.....as an allergy sufferer I think this shouldn't be allowed. The breakfast area is tired and dated and is very dark. The poppers on our duvet cover were broken so the duvet kept sliding out of the cover and 1 of my husband's pillows smelt. All in all seven stars is tired and dated and needs updating.
Host very friendly and accommodating. Good breakfast
Room bit cramped adjacent to swimming pool noisy. As had dog and was hot probably was the most appropriate room available Not able to swim as liked due to swimming lessons
Great location, parking available , friendly staff and brilliant breakfast.
Room was rather small. However given we were only there for a night, this was not a problem.
Excellent location, close to everything. Staff couldn't do enough for us. The Pool was heated and just a sliding door away from our room.
Nothing
Really clean and tidy, and the staff were fantastic (especially Captain, who runs the B&B with his owner Di). The swimming pool was great, and breakfast was wonderful. There were also some personal touches thrown in.
The bloody driveway 😬 It’s VERY narrow and you have to be very very careful driving in and out. The carpark has enough space but could be quite tight.
Lovely friendly host, room was clean and had fans running as it was hot, breakfast was very nice, including a cooked breakfast with tea or coffee, and cereals/juices that you could help yourself to.
Doors were a bit noisy, making it hard to be quiet, but it is an old building, so it is to be expected. Wasn't able to use the pool as need to have someone with you due to health and safety, understandable but disappointing

Very attentive staff. Swimming pool was very welcome in the heatwave. On site free parking.
Nothing not to like.
The property is right in the heart of Hay-on-Wye and so you can walk everywhere. The pool is obviously an added bonus The breakfast was excellent and the staff are super friendly.
It’s exactly what you would expect from an old and historic building
Location was superb. Central and easy walking everywhere. We were at the front of the property. Normal levels of street noise which we quite liked. The staff were lovely. Warm, helpful and professional throughout our stay. Breakfast was really good, especially as it was included in the price, and the use of the pool was a welcome bonus too. We liked the style of the property - old beams and cosy nook downstairs to relax in.
Staff was lovely, breakfast was very tasty, the pool was welcomed & relaxing and the room was very clean and comfortable. The team even installed 2 fans in the room to use to get through the heatwave before I even got there
We were blown away in the best possible way by the Seven Stars! From the time we arrived - much later than we’d expected - and were met by the gorgeous Ffion who couldn’t have done more for us - to after we checked out when we were able to leave our car parked in the secluded carpark while we walked the town for a few hours, everything was exceptional. Fiona asked if we could manage stairs okay, and offered us a change to a ground-floor room. She allowed us to see both rooms and choose which we preferred - we went for the one with the gorgeous view over the field and rooftops of Hay. Diane, our host, felt like a family member by the time we left! She was just lovely - nothing was too much trouble - from swimming to ordering a breakfast combination not on the menu. The pool was such a treat. Arriving in the middle of a heatwave and being able to swim when we arrived and before breakfast the next morning made all the difference to us feeling g refreshed, relaxed, and on holiday. The pool is perfect - short enough to use for physio exercises, long enough to swim laps; perfect temperature, shower & change area, immaculately clean, gorgeous temperature. And the breakfast! We’ve been in the UK for 6 1/2 weeks, stayed in 9 different places, and the Seven Stars breakfast was hands-down the best breakfast by far. There’s an impressive juice-cereal-fruit - fresh and poached/stewed (an amazing recipe involving cinnamon sticks and coriander seeds) buffet, followed by cooked (everything from full to vegetarian to vegan to smoked salmon, smoked haddock, eggs in any number of ways), bottomless fresh toast and spreads, and hot cafetière coffee and tea (that excellent thing of having separate pot of hot water to top up). This breakfast after a work-out swim was brilliant - would have been equally great after a walk by the Wye river which is a stone’s throw away. We’re fans of Hay-on-Wye over many decades, but Seven Stars was truly a revelation. Superb value-for-money.
That we had to leave after only one night!
Lovely welcome. Perfect location. Great breakfast and lovely pool.
We stayed for one night, when it was very hot outside. Very friendly and helpful staff. We had an upstairs room in the annexe above the pool. Small but comfortable. A fan had been provided and it really helped with the heat. The Seven stars is a very old quirky building and may not suit those who want modern luxury but we liked it. Breakfast was outstanding! The swimming pool was being used for a children's swimming group on the evening we were there - but it's how they can afford to have one. My wife got a swim the following morning though, which was a nice bonus. We would definitely stay again.
The very hot weather made the room rather hot and uncomfortable. There was nothing that the Seven Stars could do about the weather, but they did all they could to make it more comfortable indoors.
Perfect setting for a stay in Hay. The hotel pool is the perfect temperature and perfect for children or a couple break. Di couldn’t be anymore helpful and Livvy! Thank you both so much for the perfect stay! Breakfast was perfect. Parking on site as well! What else could you ask for when staying in a town! Captain the bearded collie was superb.
Nothing! Perfect!
Very quaint, staff very friendly and always happy to help. Breakfast was lovely, room was comfortable and power shower was spot on. The pool was another added bonus. Overall we had a lovely two night stay.
I am tall so just had to watch your head which is usual for these historic properties
Absolutely lovely. Clean, comfortable and in a good position with parking available. Di the owner was so friendly and helpful. Would stay again.
Nothing to not like.
Not much at all. Just parking facility
Stairs to upstairs room unsafe. Alternative room adjoining pool used by public. Just could not stay so left
It was central
No garden to sit in as temp 36degree Did not stay in the building it’s self but over the pool Pool needs updating didn’t use as too warm
Only one seat in room anyone walking in from outside walked straight into kitchen when preparing food should not have happened no handrail to access the bath poor lights throughout the building and very dull in our room. Needs an update very tired throughout. All tables had been laid out for breakfast with the sugar bowl also left out tables were set when we arrived in the afternoon it was a walk through the dining area to the rooms and they had sat there all afternoon and evening with people and dogs walking through really nice.
Perfect location, wonderful staff, very easy to regulate the room temperature in the heat, loved having the pool onsite & the parking space. Excellent value for money
Great location, very friendly staff and very clean plus parking!
Nothing to dislike about the property
Fijn zwembad Centrale ligging Ruime kamer Heerlijk ontbijt Gratis parkeren
Badkamer kan opknapbeurt gebruiken
Di and Liv were very accommodating,we had a very comfy 2night stay.
Location. Air conditioning in the room.
We stayed in room 8, which is by the indoor pool. It seemed to be a room that used to be for storage and has now been converted into a bedroom. It is only separated from the pool by a glass wall with a curtain, so the room smells of pool chemicals. The bathroom felt like cheap camping accommodation. Directly outside the room is the carpark, so if you look out you’re looking into someone’s car.
Everything was perfect.
Absolutely nothing
Friendly staff in a good location
Entrance to the car park is small and tricky
I liked the fact that there wasa nice pool there because the weather was so hot
Nothing could be be
Breakfast was excellent. Also a very good wifi connection
Beautiful bed & breakfast, Diane was fantastic, very welcoming, extremely friendly and accommodating. Would definitely stay here again. The breakfast was delicious too. Thank you so much!
Every member of staff was friendly, welcoming and helpful. The swimming pool was much better than expected. Water warm, with good changing facilities, shower and toilets. Full choice of breakfast Centrally located for town
There's something rather fitting about staying in a 16th-century inn while visiting Hay-on-Wye, a town where every street seems to hide another story waiting to be discovered. The Seven Stars B&B has all the charm of an old tavern from a fantasy novel, with its rustic character making it feel as though you could bump into a wandering bard or weary adventurer around the next corner. Of course, every great tavern has its memorable local, and here that honour belongs to Captain, the resident Bearded Collie. Be warned—once you've sat down for a meal, he'll happily keep you company until you've fulfilled your duty and paid him the proper tribute... in the form of plenty of fuss and attention! Despite the unusually warm weather during my visit, the room was comfortable thanks to the fan provided and the fresh breeze through the window, making it the perfect place to rest before setting off to explore the wonderful maze of bookshops that make Hay-on-Wye so special. If you're planning a stay, don't forget your swimming shorts. The pool was a brilliant surprise and the perfect way to unwind after a long drive before heading off on your next adventure. A heartfelt thank you to the staff, who were incredibly welcoming and accommodating throughout my stay. Their kindness, combined with the character of the house, made this much more than just a night's accommodation—it became part of the story of my trip. I'll certainly be returning the next time my adventures lead me back to the town of books.
The location is slightly off of the website & Google. When coming in on sat nav it took me to a building down the road. Luckily a friendly bearded stranger pointed me in the right direction.
