Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Staff, food and accommodation were all excellent providing great value for money, wholly recommend.
Esther and her team clearly put a lot of thought in to making guests feel welcome, comfortable and looked after.
Would have preferred a more remote, rural location, but there is so much beautiful countryside on the doorstep that this wasn't really an issue.
Didn’t have breakfast
The floor in the room was disgusting, my sock were covered in human hair, it was obvious the floor hadn’t been swept.
Lovely welcome. Easy check in. Room was very clean and beautifully decorated. Good breakfast. Highly recommend
The staff were super friendly and accommodating - they provided breakfast for me before opening hours on a Sunday as I was running the Great North Run today, which was so kind of them! The food in the restaurant was fresh and tasty and the location and room were very pleasant. Thank you for your warm hospitality - would highly recommend!
The staff very friendly. The rooms were spotless and very well appointed. We had a evening meal as well which was fantastic well cooked and lovely portion size.
Nice decor and rooms
No restaurant or bar with none locally. Poor night sleep due to light above the door
A nice, clean room with an incredibly comfortable bed. Good parking.
Warm welcome, staff are friendly, thoughtful and helpful… I loved the massive bed and the bathroom is amazing.. nice big bath with a really powerful shower.. facilities brilliant.. sauna and hot tub great..
There is a slight smell of damp. The breakfast was terrible.. 😞 mould on the bread and my muffin was solid. I was so disappointed.. when I checked out no one at reception so I couldn’t feedback..
The best stay we have ever had anywhere, will definately return
Everything was perfect
The friendly staff, cozy feel, excellent food.
Everyone was so lovely and welcoming.
Fire exit lights in the bedroom. Glowing green light. Only very small but lit up the bedroom so it was difficult to sleep.
Excellent base for visiting kynren. Very friendly staff, lovely quirky rooms & excellent food.
Nothing of note.
Quirky, clean and a good location
No restaurant open at the time of our stay there was a lamb baaing well into the evening
Cosy and friendly...staff were lovely
Food choices not great...didnt have half of the things on the menu,
Really friendly staff, the room was lovely and exceptionally clean.
Spotlessly clean, I have no idea how they keep it so sparkling clean! Beautifully decorated. Bottles of water and biscuits were a nice touch. Bed was comfortable and the sheets were soft. Plentiful towels. Useful little shelf with an extra light over it for putting on make up and doing my hair was much appreciated. Staff were very friendly and approachable.
Room was too hot for me, far warmer than the outside temperature. You could only open the top part of the window. A fan was provided and appreciated but I can't sleep with a fan on. This would put me off booking this particular room again although I would consider others. Breakfast took a long time to come out.
I liked everything about this property , the room , facilities , food , and the Staff are fabulous
There was not one thing I could fault this property for on
Very home like
All great
Breakfast was absolutely beautiful, fresh and tasty.
Absolutely nothing
Clean room, comfy bed, good food. Close to Kynren.
Food was amazing, staff very friendly, room was perfect
Extremely well maintained, and possibly the cleanest hotel I've ever stayed in, even after we had used the room (the cleaners did an outstanding job). The rooms were relatively spacious. Plenty of parking. Very good breakfast, made to order each day, with good quality ingredients.
The biggest difficulty is that there is no-one in attendance outside specific hours. There is someone on-call, but that became a problem. We managed to leave our keycard in the room (you really need to be given two, but we only got one), so we called to ask someone to let us in. That led to a rather confusing conversation, where the person seemed to struggle to understand the problem, but at the end they seemed to say they were on their way. That's fine, and our fault for forgetting the card. But after half an hour of standing in the hall with no-one coming, we called again. Another odd conversation, where after explaining again that we couldn't get into the room, we were asked "What are you looking for?" - as though it wasn't clear we were looking to get into our room. Finally we got an explicit statement that she would come to let us in, and within a few minutes there she was - and then it became clear what the problem was, as she was very friendly but also very strongly "under the influence" of alcohol. Ultimately, that's a big problem. Relying on people being on-call is fine, but they need to be reliably available - we shouldn't have been stuck outside our room for nearly an hour because the person supposed to be available, potentially for emergencies, decided to have a night drinking. To be clear, other than that, everyone we met was professional and helpful, so this was a specific experience, but if we had genuinely had an emergency it could really have been a problem, rather than just a major inconvenience. Beyond that, the "spa" room was spacious, but difficult to use because of the heat. There is a window, but only the top portion of it opens, and whenever the spa was used, or the shower, the room would be unpleasantly hot for hours afterwards, even with two fans running. Overall, it's a nice hotel, but there are issues that need to be addressed.
Really lovely place, Staff are so nice and friendly Only stayed the 1 night but will definitely be back Evening meal was amazing Breakfast lovely, loads of options

Lovely staff Room very comfortable and clean Breakfast exceptional! Great value for money
Lovely and clean room and facilities. Staff were so friendly and helpful allowing myself to check in early and get changed for wedding nearby. Couldn’t have been happier with my stay.
I have stayed at the Thomas Wright House before with my husband, and because it left such a lovely impression, I knew it was the only place to book for a special weekend away with my dear friend. We have just finished a two-night stay, and "amazing" doesn't even begin to cover how truly wonderful it was. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to the entire team for making our break so deeply memorable and comfortable. We arrived late on Friday afternoon, feeling utterly shattered after a grueling three-hour-plus drive up from Staffordshire. The moment we stepped inside, the exhaustion melted away. The team immediately wrapped us in the warmest hospitality, offering us drinks and letting us decompress in their gorgeous garden. Sitting outside, looking over the rolling hills and beautiful, peaceful landscape, was exactly what our souls needed after that long drive. Our room—the Tucana room—was an absolute sanctuary. It was spotlessly clean, amazingly comfortable, and filled with so much thoughtful attention to detail. It had absolutely everything you could ever think of or need. But the food—my goodness, the food! We had a reservation in the restaurant on Friday evening, and it was quite simply some of the best food I have ever eaten in any guest house or restaurant. Everything was freshly made, perfectly cooked, beautifully presented, and the portion sizes were incredibly generous. You can tell that the chef genuinely cares about every single thing that is plated up. It is pure talent and passion on a plate. Breakfast the next morning was equally spectacular, with decent, high-quality homemade food that set us up perfectly for the day. What truly makes this place the absolute gem that it is, is the people. The staff are nothing short of angels. They are so genuinely friendly and could not do enough to ensure we were happy. They took the time to talk to us about the stunning local area.
Nothing i can say I didn’t like
I was made very welcome from the moment I arrived and I enjoyed talking with the people at reception. I liked the room and the bed was comfortable. I appreciated having a large fan on a stand for the hot weather, and the fact that the window had manoeuvrable shutters inside, so that I could keep the sun off in the middle of the day. The house itself is very interesting. The breakfasts were excellent, and the staff helpful and friendly. I enjoyed taking my time over breakfast, as each day I then drove to the next village (Middlestone Moor) to help my friend with her unpacking, as she has moved house recently. The drive from hotel to my friend's house was through beautiful rural landscape. And the hotel's parking is plentiful and convenient. The hotel is within a short drive of Bishop Auckland and Durham, which I include in my photos. Altogether a pleasant and enjoyable stay!
I was mildly troubled by the steepness of the stairs, but nothing really qualified as "not liking" it.
The property is in an excellent location for what I require if for.
So very welcoming. Lovely staff and food. Well furnished modern rooms
From the outside I wasn't sure. Car park unmade and the bottom half of the exterior of the pub at the front spoils the overall look. First impressions were completely wrong based on the outside appearance. We had a great stay.
Good location, friendly staff. Spacious rooms and good breakfast.
Very friendly staff and exceptional food & value.
De buitenruimte. Het ontbijt en het personeel dat heel vriendelijk was bij het ontbjjt.
Het zetelbed. Het was een heel dunne matras.
Staff lovely, food amazing, plenty of excellent choices. Breakfast lovely very filling, plenty of choices to chose from. We had a great stay here this weekend at a family wedding 10 mins away. Thank you xx😊👍
Nothing.
Lovely people and very pleasant accommodation.
El desayuno fue memorable. De lo mejor de este viaje. El personal muy muy muy amable, tuvimos una bonita charla durante el desayuno. El baño muy bien.
Hacía calor, y el ventilador de la habitación no fue suficiente.
Great setting. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great value for money.
Bar and restaurant not open on Monday.
Breakfast was beautiful. Hosts were super friendly and overall a perfect stay.

Really friendly & comfortable room. Excellent restaurant, garden & breakfast
Nothing
Breakfast was excellent. Staff were friendly and accomodating. Loved our dogs
The location was a bit grim but that was where we needed to be to meet up with someone and there's nothing the owners can do to make it more picturesque
Stayed two nights at Thomas Wright House while visiting Kynren nearby. Warm welcome, quick check-in, and a spotless, comfy room with nice little touches. Drinks in the garden before dinner, which was outstanding in both quality and value, with very generous portions. Staff were friendly, efficient and genuinely caring throughout our stay. Slept well and enjoyed one of the best full English breakfasts we’ve ever had. After a full day at Kynren, we came back late and were still warmly greeted. Another great breakfast before checkout left us amazed at the value for money and fair bar prices. It’s not flashy, but it’s homely, incredibly friendly and immaculately clean. We highly recommend Thomas Wright House and will be back.
Room was comfy, bathroom was great. It was a lovely break so we could continue our day around the area. Thankfully this person from the restaurant came to our rescue and let us into the room late at night.
We arrived late and didn’t know how to check in when you arrived late and no reception is there anymore. I recommend asking for instructions if you plan to arrive after 8-9pm as we panicked a little. Staff at breakfast didn’t know about vegan options and it was difficult. They didn’t had milk alternatives, but we still managed. If you bring a cartoon of your own milk, you can eat some of the cereals. Breakfast area was confusing to find, there was an event the day before and they used the area, so all the signs pointed to the wrong place.
We were walking the Way of Life Pilgrim Route to Durham and Thomas Wright House was the perfect stop over . The restaurant wasn’t open in the evening but we enjoyed a lovely breakfast and appreciated the friendly atmosphere with everyone watching the England game .
Lovely vegetarian breakfast. Spa suite was lovely. Very friendly staff. Very easy arrival & departure process.
It’s a good place and good value. We’ve stayed there several times. Friendly, warm reception every time.
One or two maintenance issues require attention, but these didn’t impact on the quality of our stay. We fed back verbally upon check out to ensure the next guests have a better experience.
Absolutely amazing stay, couldn’t fault any of it. The food for both dinner and breakfast was delicious with generous portions, with plenty of gluten intolerant options and alternatives they could do. The bed was comfortable and slept well.

Everything was amazing
Absolute fabulous hotel with lovely helpful staff
Nice clean room. Friendly staff and free parking available.
Only thing which could have been improved upon was the temperature in our room. It was very hot and there wasn’t a window which opened making it rather uncomfortable.
All the staff were very friendly and accommodating, lovely breakfast , clean spacious room and very quiet. I would definitely recommend and stay again.
Was disappointed they didn’t serve food every evening as no where else in village to get food. No shower in the room we had just a very small bath, a shower over the bath would be a great improvement to that particular room.
Both Esther & Claire were fantastic
Rooms lovely - shower really good
La pulizia è la disponibilità del personale.

Staff were lovely and facilities were brilliant
Property was lovely and clean. Greeted on arrival by the lovely staff, all checked in and escorted me and my partner to the room. We were staying for a wedding not far from the property and our uber kept getting cancelled, so the lovely staff said we’ll drop you off. Very nice of them. Thank you so much for having us.
Friendly staff, very helpful, excellent breakfast and evening meals, large portions!
Room ( on 1st floor) was very hot despite outside temperatures being normal
Fabulously friendly, accommodating staff. Perfect location with parking. Good breakfast - freshly cooked.
We loved the welcome, the staff, the food & the accommodation overall. Everything was excellent!

Lovely view out the back field. Hostess bubbly and very welcoming.
The staff couldn’t do enough for us. The hotel was decorated impeccably and extremely clean. Everything was of excellent quality, the food, the towels, the linen. I could not fault it even if I wanted to. I left my charger in their room by accident and the hotel has delivered it back to me promptly.
There was nothing we disliked about the property or the service.
Fabulous room Huge bath with jets Bottle of Prosecco nice touch Very friendly owner
All good
Easy self check-in. Room was clean and tidy.
The noise from other guests. You could hear everything from other rooms very loudly and it went on all night
Annie and Hugh made us feel very welcome. Spacious, comfortable accommodation. Excellent breakfast.
Nothing to dislike!
Breakfast great, rooms nice very happy
No air con, however exeptionally hot weather for Durham rooms very hot
Beautiful views, excellent full english breakfast with quality ingredients and great selection of juices and cereals. Room was very clean and comfortable. Staff were amazingly friendly and helpful. Ample parking. Highly recommend for local attractions.
Nothing to comment about dislikes. I couldn't fault it for value for money.

Accommodation and staff excellent surroundings dismal if you could move the location it would be a winner.
Just the location everything else excellent.
Friendly staff and nice food
Bedroom far to hot and no bar to speak off but maybe that was because a wedding was taking place the next day so maybe the bar was used for that
Peace and quiet.
Bar shuts at 5pm and there's nothing within a walking distance for food, so either take away or drive somewhere.
Food was delicious, staff were great, the full stay was amazing, loved the room, will deffo stay again. Well worth the money.
Staff lovely, room really nice , food good.
When we walked into the room there was an awful smell hit us straight away of damp carpet , we thought we would get nose blind to it but unfortunately we didn’t. It was coming from the carpet near the patio doors ovs getting wet from the hot tub and not drying causing the awful smell.

Lovely location with a tremendous view from the garden. Staff were very friendly, polite & extremely helpful.
Some staff were nice food was nice, was nice inside of the place
On arrival had to wait to be checked in as no staff on reception, we got shown to our room and then they left and said when you come down just ask a member of staff to show you around as the person who took us upto the room was busy with a baby shower, anyway just decided to find our own way around the place, then we realised not only was their a baby shower they also had a hen party aswel so half the garden out back was blocked off and couldn't walk through hotel to get outside had to carry drinks and walk around the outside and to make it even worse not sure if it was part of the hotel 2 tree surgeons cutting down trees was really noisy couldn't enjoy our drinks outside as couldn't hear yourself think this was meant to be a relaxing night away, we should of been told by the hotel that all of this was going on or we would of booked for another night or somewhere else and bed was not very comfortable
The location and the room were exceptional.
Room was hot, but fans were provided.
everythink food staff room
Great hotel the staff were so lovely. Room a bit dated but all clean and really comforable bed Breakfast was great would stay again
The staff were all lovely and the breakfast was excellent - well made and presented and it was delicious - thank you
Room was very clean & comfortable. Breakfast was superb.
The breakfast was excellent and location good for a wedding at Whitworth Hall. Although the bar closed by the time we returned we found an honesty bar which was a brilliant idea for a night cap. Staff were really friendly and helpful.
Ideal for a relaxing break in a quiet village setting. Accommodation was excellent. Staff friendly and attentive. Breakfast was very good.
Nothing.
We are coming back to this hotel , staffs are so great . Facilities are tidy and clean
Nothing I loved everything
Staffs are very welcoming, accommodating and friendly. Clean hotel and good value for money
That experience in this hotel makes me wanna go back.
Beautiful area. Nice clean room. Good Breakfast. Plenty of parking.
If you open the window you have to open the wooden blinds to let the air in the room then can't sleep with the light coming in also hall stairs carpet needs a good clean or replacing as it lets the place down. Ps Wooden blinds look great but needs curtains also
Easy parking. Quiet location. Nice rooms, good facilities. Excellent breakfast and great value.
