Central location, fine for a nights stay in Belper. Nice continental breakfast Good staff
Room noisy from a fan below, but we had been told there would be noise at hotel so were ok with it
A great hotel in the heart of Belper. Excellent facilities and service, we would highly recommend.
Clean room, comfy bed, good bar and live entertainment, free parking, and close to town
Wall are thin, you can hear talking from other rooms, but it didn't disturb us too much
Lovely stay great location for visiting family
Location Clean
Stayed a few times before Great room Lovely food Great staff Would always stay here
Great location, clean and comfortable
Very noisy at night
Staff are fantastic
Booked a king size room at extr cost to be greeted with 2 singles pushed together both of which were quite sunken which caused a great big lump in the middle. Would not book again!
Location and friendly staff
Some early morning noise from the nearby petrol station, but we were getting up anyway
Good location and parking Mostly friendly and helpful staff
As a single guest I got a tiny room over the main door with noisy plumbing, a fusty smell and uncomfortable pillows which needed freshening up. The window was open when I arrived and I had to leave it as the room needed airing. This meant the noise from the adjacent petrol station was quite loud. Not good value for the price.
Great location and breakfast included was pretty good. Staff all friendly.
Room was in need of an update but everything worked well and was comfortable
Easy access from train station, quick walk to town centre
the ceiling tiles
Staff were fabulous and helpful. The food was exceptional (we had a meal in the restaurant and full English breakfast) The hotel was placed close to the town centre with plenty of bars restaurants and coffee shops.
If I had to be hyper critical and forced to pick one thing, it would be that being over 6' tall, I found all the mirrors in the room to low.
Location and parking
Load music one night, but stopped at 23:30. We knew it was happening so no issues really
Breakfast was delicious and well worth the price
Couldn’t fault it. Great vibe
Nothing
The hotel is clean and easily accessed and convenient for the town of Belper. The breakfast we opted for was continental and was very pleasant. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
To get to room three which we were allocated we had to go up several flights of stairs and the lack of a lift was a serious disadvantage to my wife who has mobility issues. The room we were allocated was on the roadside and was very noisy. Unfortunately, there was a severe thunderstorm, which was, of course, nothing to do with the hotel, but it did make the room very noisy.
Clean, friendly, comfortable & a nice atmosphere. Food excellent.
My room was a bit noisy overlooking the mainstreet as the windows are not double glazed, but most of the other rooms are further back so i'll kniw next time.
Great pub, lively atmosphere
The noise of something outside connected to cooler system? Was horrendous ,luckily I had ear plugs but still could hear it, then they sorted it on second night ,must of switched it off and that was much better
Location was perfect. Very central and walking distance from the station.
We like where it is and it was ideal to stop over for a wedding we attended
Loved the comfortable bed and breakfast
Great staff. Very clean and great location. My room was a good size with a good bathroom.
Location was good and food great
The disco noise both Saturday and Sunday night great if you want a few beers and a band but not if you need a great nights kip
Staff very kind and helpful. Continental breakfast very good. Nice places to sit and read with a beer.
Room was hot no fan or air-conditioning so window open all night on busy road so little sleep.
All good, staff welcoming and plenty of parking
Room window overlooking petrol station which was a rude awakening at 0530
Being able to eat outside in the courtyard. Helpful and friendly staff. Breakfast room, food and service very good. Good food. Reasonable prices.
Continental breakfast was lovely. Staff, especially guy at breakfast were wonderful.
Bathroom in room 6 smelt of stale water so door had to be kept shut but was awful 2hen door op3ned. Room overlooked 24 hour petroleum station so quite noisy at times during* the nigh5 and early morning
Bar at the bottom floor has really nice pizza.
The additional single bed wasn’t very comfortable and only had a thin mattress. In our room it was impossible to open the windows.
Parkeerplaats bij het hotel
Erg gehorig, ligt naast een tankstation en de afzuiginstallatie van de keuken maakte veel herrie.
Location and staff
Mothing
The room was relatively clean and the staff were friendly. The food from the restaurant was good.
The bed was uncomfortable. The fuel station right across from my room was noisy all night. The tv didn’t work very well. The food was overpriced. The English breakfast was not good value for money and not very good quality. The flies constantly sitting on my food at breakfast was also not ideal. I leafy half my food once the flies got to it.
Generally comfortable room and it had a bath also. They provided a fan due to the hot weather. Location is right in the centre, shops etc. are very convenient. Continental breakfast is fine.
Comfortable room, nice bathroom, free parking.
Expensive for a room above a pub.
Good location excellent meal and good serbice
More comfy bed
Bed was comfortable, bathroom good, only 1 bag of green tea
Hotel is run down, I have always had the feeling they are waiting for someone to buy the place
The room was large and clean and parking was easy The bar had live music the night we stayed which was great
Bed was very uncomfortable and there was a hum from the garage next door which was constant throughout the night
Window open and fan in room. Good selection of teas/coffees in room Great continental breakfast.
Odd detail - top of hot tap missing.
Lovely big room. Comfortable bed Food great.
Road quite noisy No fresh tea at breakfast
Room was clean
The whole place felt a little tired.
Great location as close to everything
Our room was sadly facing the 24 hr petrol station so the noise was horrific ! Shouting, swearing, traffic noise & car engines were waking us up through the night ! Had to close the windows although didn’t really make a jot of difference but it did however make the room sweltering !
Amazing Sunday dinner! Great friendly service from all staff , especially Kat! Good quality and value for money! Dog friendly too! Will definitely be returning!
It was a lovely hotel/pub very noisy in the evenings doors banging woke me up a few times but pleasant enough
No facilities for disabled, no shampoos, conditioner, only shower over bath difficult for me to get in and out of , No water for drinking in room , especially with heat, no air con just one small deck top fan to cool you .
It was far to warm, and the fan supplied wasn't sufficient enough.
Staff are mostly very friendly. Food is very good. Parking is very close and a very central location in Belper.
Building and room feel quite dated. Only 2 easy access plug sockets, 1 used for TV the other for the fan. Petrol station close by can be loud until late and start quite early.
Lovely staff and hotel
We got married at The Lion on 18th July 2026. From start to finish Toni was absolutely amazing, nothing was ever too much. From the first meeting, she was helpful, thorough and friendly and this continued right up to and after our special day. All of the team were friendly, polite and helpful on the day, there was always someone there if we needed something! The food was amazing, and the house DJ was great and got everyone up on the dance floor! The ceremony and reception room were spacious and decorated well and the bedrooms were clean and tidy. Will be visiting again to come for our anniversary!
All the staff were polite & help full
It was a maze to find the rooms they should put more signs to the actual rooms .
Very nice and warmly welcoming the staff wz
Food and England beating france
Excellent Sunday Roast Dinner and wonderful attentive service from Kath
Nice bathroom
Noisy, bed small
Stayed for one night for the music festival. Booked for next years already. Cheers guys
Breakfast room; clean, pleasant staff Continental breakfast was good
Bathroom; no face cloths (I think you call them flannels) Did not realize there wasn’t a lift. I am 78 years old and was not offered assistance with my luggage to my room. Was told it was just one flight of stairs… I was in room 20 and there was more than one flight of stairs.
My wife planned a surprise party for me, at the lion, Basically to renew our wedding vows, she booked the room last October and paid deposit to secure this, but when it came to finish organising the event (Toni) the event planner had booked nothing, so guests that had been invited probably couldn’t come, the manager was useless at helping my wife, and on one occasion hid behind curtains so he didn’t have to speak to her, Thanks to Alex and the receptionist them two managed to organise it, no apologies from Toni or the manager was ever given, and I couldn’t assist my wife as it was supposed to be my surprise party, The party did go ahead, we feel very let down by the Lion as we have been regular customers since around 2012, so choosing here wasn’t just a last minute choice. We haven’t been back since, because this really upset my wife who struggles to organise things like this because of ill health, but no concern for my wife was shown, or no assistance from the management, I would say this is extreme lack of customer care and support.
It was in a good location for what I needed.
My room was very stuffy. No way of keeping the window open. I asked reception about a fan and there was one tucked away in the wardrobe. It was very noisy and rattly to use! In addition, I overlooked the outside courtyard. I expected people to be in the pub or bar until fairly late, but at 12:30 am I couldn’t cope with the noise from the people outside any more and called reception. It took many calls for someone to answer, then the member of staff did apologise and say they would ask them to go inside. Eventually this did happen. So with a stuffy room, noisy fan and a lot of noise from bar guests, not much sleep was had. I was visiting a friend who is seriously ill and had intended to use the hotel on other occasions, but will be looking elsewhere.
Pleasant staff, good menu and tasty food
Lots of stairs made it challenging carrying heavy suitcases. No aircon was so a bind though the portable fan did help somewhat
Location, beautiful building, lovely decor and wonderful staff
We had the honeymoon suite which was stunning but let down by having no working Tv despite having 2 in the room! They manage to get the main one working in the seated area but we were unable to watch TV in bed!
The outside area was fantastic, the food was amazing and the staff were friendly and helpful
Nothing
Breakfast was lovely
The outside noise
The staff, the hotel, the different places you could have a drink or eat in, i.e., the bar ,the court yard the garden the inside court yard nice and relaxing, the food. A great size room free parking the weather 😉
The only thing I can say is the hot room temperature. You did provide a fan, but it was still hot over night. And the final thing was leaving!!
Very friendly and helpful staff Good location Great food and beer
It was a quiet room, but mainly because there was no live music on that night
The staff were friendly except for one .
Location for a friends wedding. Free parking and breakfast was good.
The strong odour in the room of cooking fat was incredibly unpleasant and the higher price paid for the non-standard room was not worth it at all. The room looks nothing like the photos advertised and was in need of cleaner carpets, cleaning of walls and woodwork due to numerous stains. We didn’t come back to the hotel until past midnight so couldn’t ask to change rooms unfortunately. Friends stayed in other areas and enjoyed their stay, so I just think you need to avoid room 16.
The proximity to town The cooked breakfast (additional cost) was good
Whilst we stayed towards the end of a heatwave so expected it to be warm, the bedroom was unbearably hot, the was a small fan no air con, a small sash window that overlooked the courtyard and was overlooked from other windows opposite and to the side, with blackout curtains that had to be kept shut for privacy as there were no other widow coverings, this meant that no fresh air could circulate leaving the fan to blow hot air. Managed only 3 hours sleep. Not a lot of choice on the continental breakfast which was included in the cost
I always enjoy visiting The Lion in Belper and it never disappoints. As a local resident, I eat here regularly, and the food is consistently outstanding. The quality of the meals and the excellent service keep us coming back time and time again. A special mention has to go to Kat, who always provides exceptional customer service. She is friendly, welcoming, attentive, and always happy to help, making every visit a pleasure. I would highly recommend The Lion to anyone looking for fantastic food, a great atmosphere, and first-class service. We will definitely continue to visit regularly!
Excellent location, excellent friendly staff and wonderful food garden and bar 😊
We sat in the Bar area where Kathryn looked after us superbly from start to finish. The roast sirloin of beef and the trimmings was delicious as was the Sea Bass. This was our first visit in a long time due to husband's accident but well worth the wait. Thank you Kathryn.
Friendly staff, excellent food
Everything
A little noisy at night
Good central location. Easy access to get around Belper.
Unfortunately our room Was above where the stage was below in the bar and it was very noisy. I think people should be advised of that as soon as you can so you can either be asked to move or find alternative accommodation.
Meals served until 9pm which was helpful after a long journey, lovely staff, clean and comfortable rooms, friendly service for breakfast and departure.
The continental breakfast was very basic - we decided to upgrade to a cooked breakfast which was excellent. I have some dietary restrictions which the complementary breakfast wouldn't really have catered for, unfortunately.
We got married at The Lion Hotel on 26th May. We had a fantastic time. The rooms and facilities were great. Both rooms has very recently been refurbished. Toni and her colleagues were really helpful and supportive. It was just a perfect day. The food was amazing. Thank you to all the staff
Not expecting to get breakfast, a bonus and very good
The noise at night from extraction fan but not unexpected as I had read reviews.
Location
The hotel was in a good location. The staff were professional and friendly. We ate in the restaurant and the food was delicious. The room was large and the bed was very comfortable, we had a good night's sleep. Breakfast was continental style and came with toast which was filling. There was an option of paying extra to upgrade to a cooked breakfast if desired.
Very basic room accomodation. No extra pillows if required. The toiletries supplied were a small bar of soap and a generic tube of combined shampoo/shower gel each not what the photos imply are in the room or what I would expect from accommodation in this price range. The window sills were thick with dust as though they had been overlooked when cleaning the room.
Lovely place in a great location. The staff was really good. We very much enjoyed our stay here and would stay again.
Nothing.
Great central location
Bed was very uncomfortable, could do with new mattress
The Hotel is great. the staff, food and location are amazing
The bedroom was clean and tidy but I feel it needs some TLC, it was very tired and shabby in places.
Friendly ,clean, great location, parking and atmosphere...amazing pizza and food and wanted to stay longer
Nothing
My regular venue for a gluten free pizza, undoubtedly the best in Belper, my favourite being the chicken tikka option which I have with a bucket of fries and a side of mayo together with a pint of Thatchers Gold cider. They have a very varied food and drinks menu, the staff are super friendly, efficient and helpful. They are dog friendly and have Sky Sports, whatever else do I need?
The staff were fantastic!
It’s a bit tired and in need of more than a lick of paint. But that didn’t detract from the stay
Excellent location, friendly hardworking staff, excellent food
The bed was past it's best
Always pleasant and helpful staff. Live music is always of a good standard. Good towels. Clean linen.
Hot small room. Too much bulky old fashioned furniture. Tired decor in this room.
Location and staff
The price and lack of facilities in the room
Right in the middle of the town with plenty of pubs and restaurants within walking distance.
It can be a bit noisy late at night with the crowds leaving the party downstairs.
The location is great, very close to amenities.
Unfortunately a radiator was broken and constantly on which meant I was very hot and didn't sleep very well, the beds are very comfortable 👌
Everything was spot on great location and great room
Nothing
Location was good and free parking. Friendly staff and a nice atmosphere.
Room was too hot 🥵 opened windows but all we could then hear was an air conditioner humming outside all night.! Continental breakfast was very limited and the bar prices were way on the top end compared to another local pub, The Devonshire, which is a 2 minute walk away.!
Excellent location
All the staff were fantastic and pleasant and the hotel was the perfect location for what we wanted to do.
All good
Comfy bed, good continental breakfast. Good choice of teas, including herbal, in the room. Shower was hot. The room was clean and staff were friendly and helpful.
It was expensive at over £100 a night. The room overlooked a petrol station and a road, it was quite noisy and I needed to use ear plugs to sleep.
Excellent cooked breakfast; a little extra but worth it. Lovely spacious room, great bar and kitchen. The Lion is our "go to" pub and hotel when we are in Belper :-)
Not a lot to dislike.
well located, clean and comfortable
room was above outside smoking area so a little noisy
Absolutely a wonderful place to stay! The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Lovely facilities - a bar, food available, beer garden and a small courtyard. Staff friendly and polite.
The the hotel . Staff amazing
