Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Though our room was likely the tiniest (we pack very light and it was a struggle to find a place for our things), we loved the hotel, the staff and the meals (we had both dinner and breakfast). They kindly found a place to store our bikes securely.
The location was perfect, staff were so friendly and nothing was too much bother. We ate there on evening and the food was delicious. Breakfast too was lovely and very filling.
Didnt know we could get free admission to Raby Castle as well as the waterfall if staying at the hotel as we would have possibly planned our visit differently.
Full of character and charm
Great location, excellent attentive, helpful staff. Lovely rooms with comfortable bed. Clean, tidy. Perfect in every way. Would definitely stay again.
The food and hospitality was excellent.
Nothing, all very good.
The hotel is charming and the room was spacious and spotlessly clean. The staff at the hotel were amazing - they were all so helpful - they went above and beyond. The breakfast and the dinner were very good and also good value.
Beautiful decor, lovely friendly staff. Great facilities and wonderful location.
I'd have preferred a summer duvet - it was very thick and too warm.
Very welcoming staff and great location for visiting High Force waterfalls. Good food in restaurant and good breakfast.
I am just 5 foot tall and the bed was very high! I literally had to climb onto it and spent the night worrying about falling off ! Also passing traffic noise especially motorbikes as the room faced onto the road. It would be better for us if dogs were kept in a separate area of the restaurant.
Great location . Stay included if requested tickets too High force waterfalls . Also tickets for Raby castle & gardens Staff were helpful & friendly . Great food . Hotel very unique & downstairs dining very spacious
We were in room 7 , standard room with our Small dog . It was great for one night . Very small room & cupboard . Perhaps a small set of drawers instead of the tall round table !
Friendly staff, great location for the Pennine Way
Evening meal burger was a little bland
A lovely country hotel in a beautiful location - highly recommend a walk to the waterfall. Staff were very accommodating and both dinner and breakfast were delicious - would highly recommend!
Arriving from over the desolate high moors George, the owner, could not have been more helpful. A choice of beautifully furnished rooms then a short walk down to the waterfall, followed by an excellent evening meal.
Don’t be put off by the austere exterior.
Pleasant comfortable hotel right opposite High Force which you can visit free if you are staying at the hotel. Large room with lots of windows and quiet despite being right on the roadside. Really spacious bed. Tea and cake after our walk. Dinner was traditional pub food - steak, fish and chips etc which was well cooked. Breakfast had omelettes and other choices as well as the full English but no yogurts or chopped seasonal fruit like strawberries. Staff were really friendly
Room was a bit grubby - stained carpet in the entrance way, mouldy tiles and really dirty arms on the chairs and the bathroom smelled of boiled vegetables despite the strong room oil - would have given it top rating if not for these points. Also the restaurant was empty by 830 pm on a Saturday night so no atmosphere.
staff super friendly, the falls and raby castle included, food amazing and that bed omg what a dream bed
NA
Great hotel, staff pleasant and very accomodating, rooms clean and beds very comfortable, breakfast and evening meal were very good, would definately recommend this hotel
There's was nothing i disliked about this hotel
Breakfast was exceptional as were the staff.
Nothing, it was great.
Great location. Lovely outdoor area. Friendly and helpful staff. Striking decor, clean and well thought out rooms.
Nothing
The dining room offers an extensive evening menu with a similarly good cellar. I wanted an early breakfast and they were able to offer a hearty ‘breakfast sandwich’ in addition to the cold table.
Housekeeping in my room left much to be desired. The space beneath the single divan has not been hoovered for ages and I found a sewing needle lying on the carpet near the head of the bed. Fortunately I did not step on it, but an obvious danger.
The staff were very helpful and welcoming.
Nothing
Nice place. Nice food. The lady on the bar was fantastic.
Room was small. Like very small.
Location and character
Nice hotel with bar and restaurant. Very close to waterfall and other towns to visit the area. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Dog friendly hotel. The food was good and great breakfast choices. The area is very calm and quiet, ideal to relax.
The pillow was too soft and the window was making a bit of noise with the wind.
The very friendly staff
It was all great
Location is perfect if walking Pennine Way. Really close to falls. Food was excellent.
Room was very small considering how much we paid.
Staff were super friendly and helpful, room was excellent location amazing food excellent. a bit pricey.
Nothing
Location is perfect for high and low force. Lovely area. Rooms were decent size
Had booked evening meal prior to booking through their website. A private booking came in so they took the room and everyone else had to eat within the pub area. Rooms got too hot through the night
Conveniently located for the Pennine Way. I had a half board deal which was excellent value. Very comfortable rooms and extremely welcoming staff. Dinner was very tasty and breakfast was excellent.
I think my room was above the kitchen, which was a bit noisy.
Very friendly staff Lovely setting
Perfect location for pennine way. George was a brilliant host. Great food and lovely rooms
Beautiful design. Great location. Wonderful staff.

The location the staff were exceptional
The staff were amazing , so happy and pleasant. George was especially nice & very helpful. The evening meal was exceptional. The shower in our room was just fabulous!!!
Our room was a little small however we did book last minute and were made aware when booking that it was a comfort room. It was fine for an overnight stay- very cosy.
Wet welcoming staff. Nothing was too much trouble.
This property is owned by the Raby estate It is the most beautiful boutique hotel in the area. From the luxurious bed linens to the food I booked half board and it was a very good deal , plus they gave us vouchers for free entry to Raby Castle is a must see..plus the high and low force waterfalls don’t miss them
Very dog friendly and a lovely stay close to some nice walks.
Staff could not have been more helpful. Engaged and really made you feel like you were the most important item on their agenda. The location is stunning. We took the opportunity to do a short walk and it was amazing!
Nothing really.
The staff are lovely - welcoming and helpful. The location is great and the rooms are well-appointed and the bathroom modern. The housekeeping team changed our very thick duvet for a sheet and blanket which was much appreciated. The room had shutters and thick curtains so it was nice and dark for sleeping which is not often the case in hotels. Once the kitchen shut down, it was very quiet. There are great walks from the doorstep.
Our room was above the kitchen and there was a lot of loud conversation from the kitchen team until service ended at about 10pm - so not particularly relaxing. The food is not quite as good as it should be - the cooked breakfasts are excellent but the dishes at dinner were a bit variable. The fish and chips were a bit greasy and the triple-cooked chips soggy. The tomato sauce accompanying a pork dish tasted like it was out of a jar rather than made from scratch. The croissants at breakfast were very dry.
Staff members were all lovely and very accommodating! Location is fantastic, just a lovely time all in !

Extremely friendly staff, fantastic location, delicious food.
The bedroom was very very warm despite having the window wide open and it was a little noisy in my room. I was in a single room above an exterior door and evertime the door closed my whole room shook. It woke me up multiple times
Great location. Tidy, pleasant atmosphere. Good selection of food. Staff friendly and helpful.
Room 7 has no usable facility to hang coats and clothes.
Very comfortable and staff were all great
Nothing all good
Fab find Comfortable, well appointed and decorated. Bedroom gorgeous, very lovely bed and bedding. Excellent
Nothing!
The staff here are wonderful and so friendly. The food was beyond our expectations and served promptly; we particularly enjoyed the soup of the day with sourdough bread and the most amazing butter! We can't wait to come back in August for our wedding!
Very friendly staff and great food .it was a great walk to high force and low force beautiful countryside all around.the free visit to Raby Castle was well worth the visit.
Nothing
A beautiful setting, and a lovingly cared-for hotel, very comfortable and peaceful. Excellent menu at dinner and breakfast. Friendly staff. Parking just outside. I would have liked to stay longer to see the waterfall, but was on a short work trip. Hope to return.
Perfect location for our planned walks. Our bed was incredibly comfy and the quality of the sheets and towels was perfect. The breakfast was excellent and menu choices for other meals were superb! All the staff were attentive and delightful.
Location perfect
Price of drinks food price acceptable beautiful well made gorgeous hat off to the chef
Clean and well decorated
Everything wonderful could not fault at all..

The vibe was relaxed and friendly. Delicious food. Staff keen to please.
Staff were so friendly and very helpful with our 2 big dogs. Pillows were amazing! Log fire and sofas super cosy.
The bed could have been bigger.
Excellent location for the Dark Skies event. Cosy, comfortable bedroom. Great food.
Bar prices too expensive.
Great location. Staff all very friendly and helpful. Lovely bar area and really enjoyed our food, both dinner and breakfast.
Only things that could be improved is that there was a slight bit of mould/staining in the shower area. The kettle felt a bit squashed in the wardrobe once clothes were hung up. I removed the clothes from the wardrobe each time I boiled the kettle. Also a little noisy in the middle of the night with other guests speaking loudly in the corridor trying to find staff members and waking me up.
Staff were excellent they go above and beyond . Great location to
Hotel, AMAZING! Staff, AMAZING! Location, AMAZING! Will definately be coming back!!
Everything about the Hotel was perfect, the location straight opposite the High Force Water fall, the package deal Room&half board fantastic, the food outstanding and locally sourced
Nothing not to dislike
Friendly, cosy hotel with a nice bar and restaurant, just a short walk from the spectacular High Force waterfall.
Stayed for our anniversary, enjoyed a lovely 3 course meal included in half board along with some cocktails. Had a lovely stay, and a great breakfast the next morning. Staff couldn't do enough for us, definitely coming back!
Id have liked a bath, which i thought i had booked but that was my fault :'D
A second time of visiting. I know the meals are lovely and breakfast are really tasty. If you can go direct you would likely get a better experience. Meals, tickets to the waterfall, and a castle.
Nothing
We liked its cosiness, welcoming staff, good food and location.
Our room was small but we expected that!
The staff, food, accommodation plus the attention to detail was magnificent
Very comfortable. Staff are lovely - very friendly and helpful.
Nothing.
Location close to the High Force waterfall and in the edge of the North Pennines. Food was of a good standard, both dinner and breakfast.
Room was tight for space - I think because I was a solo traveller, they allocated their smallest double room.
Hotel was located in a beautiful setting. There was ample free parking. Good choice of breakfast items. We also ate in the restaurant both evenings. The food was delicious. The bar area was cosy. Room was spacious with everything we required. We had to turn the radiators off though as room was far to hot for me. Not a bad point just personal preference, it was great to have the choice of hot or cold room though. We had a dog friendly room and thought it was great my dog could accompany me in the dining room, which was spacious.
Location
Room reeked of stale urine coming from the bathroom carpet.
Excellent location and friendly atmosphere

Lovely location, welcoming and friendly staff
The room had everything we needed but was very small.
Good breakfast and superb location.
Setting, food, staff all excellent . Pass for Raby castle included
That I was only there for one night
Great location
Room was crazy small for a king size bed
Amazing Everything, and everyone of the Staff were very professional. The best nights sleep in a lovely comfy bed , Highly recommend this place, x
The hotel was in a good location. Hotel was lovely. Staff friendly. The hotel and the room cosy and clean excellent .the evening meal was lovely and breakfast was excellent.

Old period charm
Excellent accommodation a great place to stay. All staff were very friendly and personable. Couldn't do enough for you. I am Gluten Free and that was extremely well catered for. Something different off menu every night and excellent English Breakfasts and GF Corn Flakes. Couldn't ask for any better GF accommodation . Ideal location if you like the out doors and walking
Great location for walking and the scenic woodland surrounding the waterfalls and the free entry into the wonderful Raby Castle. The food was excellent as was the service and the staff .
Drinks were a little pricey !
Staff very pleasant nothing was to much trouble
Bedroom cleaner did not replace toilet rolls did not clean shower left used towels in shower basin
The property is stylish and cosy. It’s situated opposite the walk to the waterfall which is a bonus The room was well put together and no faults found in the cleaning. Food in the restaurant was high quality and served with a smile. My dogs were made to feel welcome too. Would definitely stay here again.
Arrived to a bank of motorbikes which was a bit intimidating but after that (they left after 5 mins) everything was A1👌 Good sunday roast; room tastefully decorated; shower was great but best of all was the quality mattress and feather pillows - slept easily which is unusual for me in hotels. Lovely ambience throughout the hotel too. Stylish & excellent stay for the price point. Would def go back.
