Umadewi Surf & Retreat

My second stay at Umadewi this year, and definitely not my last. The team is exceptional — genuinely some of the best service I’ve experienced anywhere, always professional, warm and incredibly kind. The grounds are beautiful, the restaurant is excellent, and being right in front of Medewi’s main wave is hard to beat. A very special place and I can’t wait to come back.

Die Unterkunft ist wirklich toll! Nicht nur die Ausstattung, sondern auch das Personal. Wir haben uns sehr sehr wohl gefühlt. Ein ganz besonderes Dank geht raus an die kleine Ida, sie hat sich so toll mit unseren zwei Kindern beschäftigt und macht ihre Arbeit im Café wirklich sehr gut. Wir kommen ganz bestimmt wieder!!

Das Resort hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Die Anlage ist sehr schön und gepflegt, die Mitarbeiter aufmerksam und sehr freundlich und die Lage am Meer unglaublich. Vom Frühstückstisch kann man die Surfer beobachten. Es war Nachts ruhig und es gab keine Mücken. Hier kann man es ein paar Tage aushalten 😄

Leider war die Massage an dem Tag schon ausgebucht. Aber direkt am Strand gibt es ein weitere gutes “Studio”

The location, the staff and the food

Perfectly located resort, right on the beachfront. We stayed in an ocean view suite which was a great sized room with a nice bathroom, and a little deck overlooking the ocean with a small table and chairs. The pool was very clean with comfortable sun beds and pool towels provided daily. The staff at the resort were also incredibly friendly and helpful. We had stayed at Bombora previously and much preferred Umadewi.

We found the restaurant quite disappointing. My husband found the meal portions far too small, especially after hours of surfing. Breakfast was included and ran all day which was great but some things like coffee were not included which was a bit frustrating. We ended up eating elsewhere for most meals.

The location of the hotel was amazing, right on the point overlooking the surf break. The restaurant has a fantastic bench area where you can relax and watch the surf. Complementary shoulder massage on arrival and beautiful spa area. Wonderful relaxing pool and gorgeous grounds. Most importantly staff here were exceptionally kind and greeted us by name! A wonderful relaxing place to stay.

The shower was amazing. Plenty of hot water, pressure and room to move around. I loved the larger bottles of water that were given in the room.

The place is amazing!

Situation au bord de l'océan, magnifique (les chambres vue mer sont parfaites). La nuit le bruit des rouleaux couvre celui du muezzin :) Très belle (et grande) piscine. Personnel très sympa si vous brisez la glace. Bon choix de petit dej sans limitation dans le temps. Bonne communication par Whatsapp.

Nous ne sommes restés qu'une nuit. Pas grand chose à faire dans les environs immédiats, mais pour une étape on se contente de regarder les surfeurs et de profiter de la piscine!

The property it self is situated very close to the surfing beach in Medewi. The views from the restaurant are amazing. The restaurant itself has great food and the choice for breakfast catered for most tastes. The staff were all so friendly and attentive. The onsite amenities and spa were also excellent. The mini bar in the rooms were stocked daily with drinks and the free bottled water meant that you stayed hydrated.

From my own personal experience I can say this was one of the best experiences that I've had staying so close to the surf.

Formidable lieu. La vue sur l’océan, le jardin luxuriant, le joli bâtiment du lobby. Le restaurant koko’s est délicieux. Le plaisir de déjeuner en regardant les surfeurs prendre les vagues. Toute l’équipe est adorable. Deux nuits, ce fut trop court!

Welcoming, caring staff who knew guests by name, great location at surf beach, well maintained rooms and grounds, attractive pool area with plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas, pool was refreshing temperature without being cold. Perfect for a truly restful and relaxing holiday.

There was nothing that we didn’t like.

Zalige spot voor wie wil surfen of surfers graag van dichtbij wil bewonderen. Er heerst een echte surfvibe. Er is plek aan elke kamer om je surfplank op te bergen. Heerlijk groot zwembad op temperatuur en hip restaurantje met enkel lekkers! Je kan er lekker eten of drinken terwijl je de surfers en zonsondergang bewondert! Helemaal niet druk daar!

Beautiful location overlooking Medewi surf break. Restaurant was the best in the area and so much variety! Swimming pool and relaxing area was so good. The gardens and grounds maintained to excellent standards. Massage therapists were excellent!

Rummet var i två våningar och det var en väldigt brant trappa. Rummet var mörkt och ganska obekvämt inrett. Restaurangens personal var mycket trevlig och serviceinriktad. Dock var maten extremt dålig och serverades ofta ljummen. Stort utbud och vi testade många rätter men tyvärr utan att hitta något gott.

We found the bottom garden view rooms really dark and musty as they got no sun all day but besides that all was great.

Beautiful, well kept grounds with lovely space to emphasise the quiet, peaceful vibe of the place. The staff were so kind and they looked after us very well.

The resort is perfectly located, with the main surf break right at your doorstep. What really stood out, though, was the staff — genuinely friendly, highly competent, and clearly focused on delivering excellent service. The room I stayed in was large and very comfortable, with a great split-level layout and a beautiful bathroom. The pool and gardens are very well maintained, and the restaurant is excellent too. Overall, an amazing place to stay.

The only small (minor) downside was that the lighting in the room felt a little dim.

The staff are the big highlight here they were so attentive and nice and happy to help with anything, the property itself is beautiful and has an amazing few of the main break. Definitely recommend staying here over any of the other places on the street it was amazing and well priced

It’s very close the the mosque, so it’s best to bring earplugs. Also don’t leave things plugged in overnight, unfortunately burned my AirPods

The place was amazing and as described. The room was really spacious with everything you needed. It was cleaned everyday and 2 bottles of water per day as well as a drink from the fridge. The big breakfast was fabulous. It filled us up all day. The pool was gorgeous as well as the lighting around the hotel at night. We stayed 7 nights and the standard was consistently amazing. It is off the beaten track so if you are looking to surf and chill it's the perfect place.

I wasn’t there for long enough

Staff is exceptional. The restaurant is very good and I recommend adding the daily breakfast option. The location is difficult to beat. It’s a great spot to enjoy Medewi from.

The room doesn’t have a ton of space if you store a large board bag inside. Many board racks are located in sunny areas. So I left my board in the main lobby rack but it can get full.

We have stayed in Medewi area for many years but this has definitely been the best place we have stayed at. Set on the beach in front of Medewi surf break, location could not be better. A series of small cottages are set in the middle of lovely gardens between beach and pool. Room are a good size with a big bathroom and comfortable beds. The restaurant serves very good food at reasonable prices The highlight of this hotel is the excellent staff, very friendly with an amazing ability to remember our names from first day. A special shout out to Arna and Shinta who brought us beautiful smiles each day along with our food. We had a great 5 days there and hope it won't be too long before we return

Can’t think of any negative feed back

As a group of five, three being over 55 & the youngest 22 yrs old, this resort suited us perfectly for some downtime at the pool for the over 55's & some adventure for the other two girls. They had 2 hr surf lessons almost every morning & caught some waves as beginners. They also did a hike to a waterfall & went snorkelling, both a few hrs travel. (return) Still, in terms of location, if you don't surf this appears to be a good starting point if you are after a little adventure. All the staff were amazing. Very welcoming. Very polite. Very professional. Our rooms were very well cleaned on a daily basis & re-stocked with bottled water, a rehydration drink, milk, Balinese coffee maker & coffee. The bedding was luxurious & there was a choice of pillows. The Bathroom had freebies such as cotton buds, a sewing kit, toothbrushes & toothpaste. The shower area was fully stocked with Shampoo, Conditioner & Body wash. Breakfast was included & available until 5pm. Wow! From the big brekkie with 2 sausages, 2 eggs (however you like them) bacon, mushies, baked beans & 2 pieces of sourdough bread to Eggs Benny to Nasi Goreng. Also included was your choice of fresh juices, teas, Balinese Coffee. Hint - If you like your Barista Coffee in the morning before you eat, order the Coffee before you order anything else. (it will cost extra) Once you have your coffee, then order your meal. If you're a smoker, smoking is permitted in the outdoor areas of the Restaurant, around the pool & outside your villa. You will have to ask for an ashtray. The pool area apparently has a 1st towels laid down get to keep the spot for the day policy. If you have an early bird amongst you, make use of them! The Restaurant is a fairly casual dining space during the day, however when dining at night some people dressed for Dinner. Tip - if you like Greek salad, DO NOT go there. ... unless you like eggplant, no greenery, a tablespoon of Fetta at best, no tomatoes. Not a Greek salad in my books. In contrast, the Ox tail soup was a major hit. During our stay, there were very few young children to be seen & mostly 30+ year old surfers & over 50's. We all enjoyed our time there so much that we pre-booked for next year. Now that's a recommendation you can trust!

Excellent location, just next to the surf spot. You can sit at the restaurant and enjoy watching people surfing. Beautiful garden, nice atmosphere. Extremely appreciated the breakfast being served all day: after an early surf session it was great to be able to have a very good breakfast without rushing. All the staff from receptionists to gardeners are very professional, friendly and polite. Very good value for money. Would stay again without a doubt

The only default for us was about the room (twin rooms with garden view). The room itself is very comfortable and clean with all facilities needed. But we found it way too dark, with a lack of natural light, or from the lamps. There is also a problem with the condensation in the room. On first day the floor and shelves were clearly wet and feeling of humidity in the room was unpleasant. We informed the reception, someone came to dry the floor and shelves, and they explained that it was because we left the balcony door opened (not with the aircon working of course). The staff also switched the air-conditioning mode from cool to dry ( but dry mode cannot control the temperature and its a bit hot then). They also have electric dehumidifier in room that you need to turn on to avoid the problem. After one night we found the balance to control the humidity but you need to be careful. At then end when we came back in our room daily, we always have this feeling of being in a kind of bunker : cold, dark and a bit humid.

This was my 3rd stay and i’ll be definitely returning. It is the most magical and beautiful place with coconut trees to stay in with ultimate service quality! Everything is above and beyond. The staff is super kind and helpful, they remember each guest’s name always with a big smile on their faces. Their restaurant Kokos served the most delicious and healthy food. Top service quality. Definitely a returning guest.
