Ulbster Arms Hotel near Thurso

Room was clean and warm. Dinner and breakfasts were excellent.

Room was VERY small it consisted of a double bed, 2 x small bedside tables, dressing table and chair, which also contained tea making facilities (if you sat at the dressing table or used the tea making facilities the other person could not access the other side of the bed) and a small television Down the corridor was the "wardrobe area" and a shower room with toilet and sink. There was however an ironing board and iron, although I cannot imagine how anyone would be able to move in the room, if used. Compared with some of the other rooms which had a additional bed, two comfortable chairs to sit on, a large double bed and a large television there were no little luxuries and no curtains just blinds. Dinner - table that we sat at was very sticky even after being wiped by restaurant staff. Breakfast - hated being asked to wait while a table (2) was made up while another couple just walked in and sat at a table (4) and were served immediately. Another pet hate are condiments that are either empty or not working (pepper mills) this occurred at both breakfasts. Lounge - strange scratching and squealing noises from inside the window seat - reported discreetly to receptionist. I did pass these comments onto management on departure who have failed to respond after one week. My disappointment is now compounded by management responses. Owing to the delay in being served, the TWO guests that were seated and served before us, left the restaurant before us and were certainly not joined by ANYONE else.

Beautifully done from the rooms, to the bar, restaurant, food, setting and atmosphere. The best food we had on the NC500. So cosy, clean and comfortable. We would love to come back and stay a few more nights.

It was perfect. If we were being picky, some local beers behind the bar would be lovely!

Historic place in a picturesque location, ideal for NC 500. Apparently the hotel is preferred by fishermen. Nice pub with good food.

Heritage buildings are always a challenge when you compare with recently refurbished or new establisments. Poor sound proofing, bed comfort and a historic charming bathtub with no curtains or shower are the downsides that you sometimes accept at an older hotel.

The staff was cheery and efficient! They make the place work. Because of the value this place provides, we travel to get where we want to be to stay there. We are return guests and will be back again!

Bed in our room was not particularly comfortable - quite an uncomfortable mattress. For such a large room it seems unusual to have only a standard double. We only had a bath in our ensuite. The bath had a shower head - no shower curtain so was a little precarious trying to shower and not get water all over the floor - but a shower is preference rather than necessity.

I was on a NC500 road trip and needed a place close to the top coast. Places were hard to come by and I found this place. The internal rooms including its library and restaurant and lovely gardens are wonderful. Plenty of parking out the back. The evening meal I had there was fresh haddock and chips. Breakfast was amazing. Its such a lovely place and i would stay again.

It was just a shame i stayed in one of the lodges and not in the main building . Although the room and bathroom were spacious and immaculate. Its a bit off the beaten track.

The property was just as stunning on the inside as much as the outside, absolutely loved it

Nothing about the property, what I would suggest is though is to remove the slate tag in the keys, it’s really noisy when trying to open or look the doors

Breakfast was great, the location was great for our purposes. The room was very small and we could hear people coming and going. The room was in a separate annex, removed from the hotel premises itself.

I’m normally not that convinced by an annexe but this one was really good. Thankfully the weather was good as I wouldn’t have liked the idea of getting soaked going from my room to dinner.

Lovely hotel, set in a nice area. The hotel has accommodation within the hotel and also around the outside area they have accommodation within a few buildings which is where we stayed which had everything you needed within. The restaurant was of good quality and served evening meal & breakfast, food was excellent, and staff were very pleasant and helpful.

Are accommodation was very good, apart from the fact that the bed was placed against a wall on one side, which was the only way the bed would fit, but that meant if anyone needed to use the bathroom during the night it would involve waking up the other person or trying to climb over the other person, and being a couple over a certain age this really was a bit of an issue.

Beautiful clean room. Excellent en suite. Very quiet. The breakfast was very good. All staff were very pleasant and welcoming.

The bed was comfy and the place very clean. The breakfast was fantastic and the breakfast staff Logan & Sarah were fantastic and a credit to the place.

It was a bit style over practicality.. if you weren't in the main hotel (we weren't) and you were in one of the out buildings (brand new and very nice, like us). The impractical things were. The windows face the car park, so you had to have the blinds down. The blinds stopped people looking in, but not the light. So you were awake at silly o'clock .. and if a car came in the lights came through. The key fobs are slate, so they jingle like a cow bell, which means any one coming into the building makes so much noise whilst trying to open the door. The duvet was not big enough for the bed?!?! Why, we don't know. Only realised once in bed. 🫤 They have soap dispensers in the bathroom, that leak all over the surfaces !! All, silly things that don't ruin your stay, but are not practical for the user.

Excellent location for getting the ferry to Orkney. Very comfortable, spacious, modern room. Very good dinner and breakfast.

Great location and room was lovely and modern with a homely feel (we stayed in Dale 7) the lady who did breakfast was really nice and helpful and the breakfast was tasty.

Very unruly child in restaurant that ruined the peace, parents oblivious and staff allowed her to jump all over the furniture trying to get attention. I do wish staff felt able to quietly comment but this no longer seems allowable in today’s society. Hard bed and pillow let down an otherwise perfect stay

Location. It was just where we wanted it to be. Excellent corner room. Nice sheets, pillows etc. Excellent bathroom too. Massive shower pressure. Nice dinner. Outstanding breakfast cooked to order. Huge & safe carpark. Quiet. Overall very good value for money.

De ligging naast de Thurso rivier is prachtig. Een perfecte uitvalsbasis voor het noordoosten van Schotland. Lekker eten en een sfeervolle lobby en restaurant.

Badkamer is schoon, maar is wel echt aan vervanging toe. Past biet bij de rest van het hotel.

Stayed here many times for both work and pleasure and the hotel always provides excellent service and facilities. The breakfast is excellent.

Only stayed for one night, however the hotel staff were excellent, and the cleanliness and facilities were top notch. Room size was impressive, along with the ensuite bathroom. Evening meal was amazing and I would highly recommend the 8 hour slow-cooked blade of beef. Breakfast menu was excellent and the Full Scottish was one of the best I have had when travelling for business. Excellent value for money all-round and will definitely be back when I return to Caithness.

Very comfortable, beautifully furnished and decorated hotel, with varied menu of great quality. All staff were welcoming, local, well trained and efficient. Service was attentive and friendly. Standard room was perfect, with daily housekeeping. Bed was comfortable and room heating could be varied easily, including opening window. Clientèle appeared to be locals, fishers, professionals and NC500 travellers. All were welcomed equally. Quiet centre for exploration. Lovely, short walks close by.

One early morning awakening as glass was emptied into bins outside the room…..but short-lived. Otherwise a lovely, quiet holiday destination.

its dog friendly though, and I smelt dog in my room, more and more i experience this, its not nice for people who don't have dogs , a dog friendly hotel leave the potential for a dog to have been in the bed that you are now sleeping on, the room was very clean , no problem there. Also I had a dog sitting next to me with the occasional sniff whilst I was eating breakfast, dog owners think that us non lovers of dogs are miserable, but imagine eating breakfast with an animal that you dislike sitting next to you.

Very good food and generous portions. I had no space for desert after the fish and chips! I had to go back the next week to try the cheesecake. Helpful staff and reasonably appointed rooms.

Suggest some herbal tea or decaf options in the rooms for the evenings would be a great detail.

Nice village just outside Thurso. Twenty minutes from the North Link Ferry terminal to Orkney. Friendly hotel with bars and dining room. Comfortable bedroom with good shower.

Ulbster Arms was a perfectly fine accommodation. The location is great and the room was comfortable. There were two radiators in the room which we did not notice until it was 3am and SO HOT. Our fault, but just fyi.

Considering we were the only guests at the hotel it would have been nice to not be overlooking the parking lot from the room. Staff was a bit inattentive at times and had to be chased down but everyone was nice.

Notre chambre était collée à la salle de bain d’une autre chambre et à 7h du matin nous avons été réveillés par la douche de notre voisin avec pas seulement un bruit d’eau qui coule mais un bruit de canalisation vraiment très bruyant.

Location was good by the River thurso. There were some walks from the Hotel and it was a short drive into Thurso itself. Over the road was a small 'Morrisons Daily' supermarket which was useful to purchase daily provisions. There was plenty of space to park a car and the room itself was small but had modern decor. Staff were on the whole pleasant and helpful. We thought rooms were in the hotel but found ourselves housed in a large lodge away from the main building which was split into a number of rooms. The breakfast options in the main were of a reasonable selection.

On night one of our 5 day stay we found the TV remote didn't work. The next morning we handed the remote into reception who said they would get it fixed and return it to our room. Early that afternoon we found the remote had not been returned and went back to reception who said they had not had time to obtain two batteries during the past 5 hours. So we waited until the evening and found the remote was still at reception - but at last had new batteries !! The breakfast are was hosted by an elderly lady who had a rather abrupt manner. My wife was rebuked for putting two pieces of toast on a plate for delivery back to our table being told - no, the plates are for croissants. She was handed a small toast rack and the plates were removed. On another morning we asked - why are there no strawberries this morning? To be told they are out of season and unobtainable - strange as every supermarket we visited in Wick/Thurso areas were well stocked with them - someone with a friendlier approach would make breakfast more enjoyable. Every table was meant to have a full milk jug for tea/coffee. We arrived to find a jug with a tiny amount of milk in it. So my wife switched the jug with one on the unoccupied table next door. When we mentioned this had been done we were told - no, you shouldn't have done that. You should have gone to the milk dispenser. We considered ourselves told - we will never darken her breakfast room again. I thought we were paying guests and not at primary school being chastised by the Teacher.

We stayed in the Lodge, just across the beer garden from the main hotel. It was a fantastic place, we had our private bedroom and bathroom and the shared dining area and lounge. Plenty of room, even a little refrigerator. Even though it was just the 2 of us, this would be a perfect setup for a family or several couples. best hotel breakfast I can remember ever! Cooked to order, lots of choices. The restaurant and bar were also really lovely and the service was great. We were delayed by bad weather getting to Orkney, and this was a rare gem of a find that we just happened across. Convenient to both Thurso and John o' Groats ferry terminals. Highly recommend.
