We were actually unable to stay at the Clavering due to a family emergency but we are truly grateful for the compassion and kindness shown to us. The Clavering did not hesitate to support us and were generous in refunding our stay in full. This alone confirms to us that the Clavering is exactly what it promises to be: a beautiful, comfortable and welcoming place. We definitely visit in the future.
Good size room, lovely bathroom well decorated
It has a fixed shower head, not built for small people. Horrible blinds letting the light in at the sides and top. The door has a window in it again letting the light in.
Lovely quaint pub with excellent comfy rooms. Easy to find and parking was a doddle. We had our evening meal in the pub which was very good. The fact that the restaurant was busy shows it is very popular. There was a good choice at breakfast, which was cooked to order.
All the staff were friendly and helpful. Room modern, clean and comfortable. Fantastic food and drink. Excellent breakfast. This pub is a little gem. Full of character. Has its claim to fame as it was owned by Jamie Oliver’s parents for 44 years and he grew up there. If I am in the area again I will definitely return.
Great pub food
It was a lovely area and the pub was great.
Wish we had our room in the pub or closer, not down the road in a converted house, it didn't feel right. Felt like you were just staying in a bed and breakfast.
We stayed in a room in the courtyard and it was lovely and peaceful. We had everything we needed. The bed was comfy, nice shower, tea and coffee provided. The breakfast was amazing. Our 2nd time staying in 3 weeks.
Lovely comfortable room , great atmosphere and friendly staff
Absolutely everything
There wasn't anything
Lovely room, comfy bed, great food.
Great pub, friendly staff, fantastic room, delicious Sunday roast and an excellent breakfast!
The room was lovely. Really spacious. Deep bath and powerful shower. Nice tea tray and fresh coffee in room. Breakfast was amazing.
Nothing
Staff were friendly and pub was lovely. Food was yummy but we waited around 80 minutes for food.
Room was extremely overpriced for what it was. Some dirt on shower tiles and very noisy with other guests and by the road in the morning.
This is a lovely traditional old pub with exposed beams and brickwork and very tastefully decorated. We were in an annexe across the road and our room was beautifully decorated with a huge bed and modern bathroom. Nothing was stinted, the bedding was good quality, the towels were big and fluffy and there were plenty of toiletries in the bathroom. We ate dinner in the restaurant which was excellent and good value for money. Breakfast was also excellent with a great choice of dishes. All the staff were on top of their game and the service could not be faulted. Although it wasn't a cheap overnight stay it really was worth every penny and thoroughly to be recommended.
Absolutely nothing
Great rural location, charming old building.
The staff were a mixed bunch in terms of how they dealt with customers. Some were welcoming and very nice, others were just going through the motions…
I liked the pub and the food both at breakfast and in the evening was great. The room was a good size but a little dark once the blinds were down for privacy. The staff were lovely and very helpful. The nightly rate was good value.
The window in the room faces onto a Road. Traffic noise can be heard. It's a quiet village with a through road.
Comfortable bed and lovely decor in the room. Fan provided, which was greatly appreciated with the warm weather. Black out blinds in room with extra liners to cut out the sun and provide privacy were a good idea. Clean bathroom and plush towels and soap, shampoo provided. Breakfast was lovely with plenty to choose from.
Dusty and gritty feel in drawers, so didn't put clothes in them. Funny flavoured teabags, but just not to our taste. Private seating outside could do with sweeping and a general tidy of the area, and chairs a bit creaky to sit on. Noisy road with traffic, but not a lot can be done about that.
Absolutely stunning location- chocolate box pretty
The room was pleasant and had everything you needed. Bathroom was a little dated and the shower didn’t work great but luckily there was a bath and I stuck my head under the tap to wash my hair.
Lovely inn! Great service, great food. We loved everything about it.
Great services and facilities. Pub was very nice and friendly, great breakfast.
Mooie, ruime en schone kamer; bijzonder gastvrije medewerkers; goede, gezellige pub met lekker eten.
Niets.
Friendliness of staff. Relaxed atmosphere. Good food. Clean rooms.
Good breakfast, lovely staff, modern clean room
Bad traffic and plane noise from outside. Banging and toilet flushes until 1am inside. Shower was a waste of time, no pressure at all
Had parking. Clean decor. Staff nice.
Room had dark decor making it rather depressing rather than uplifting. Room was so warm couldn’t leave windows open cos of security. Light flcking
Great food-dinner- and breakfast
Great location , not too far from Stansted airport
The room was comfortable and quiet. The atmosphere of pub was excellent. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The food was excellent.
Nothing
Just about everything! We would stay again definitely.
The room we had was in the house and it was at the front which is right on the road. For a small village it’s a busy road. We always have windows open and it was quite noisy. We would ask for a different room next time .
The food was amazing. Thoroughly enjoyed the pork belly! Great room. Easy to find.

Very clean.Super comfy bed. Good breakfast
Always prefer walk in shower. Would have appreciated a small fridge in room especially during very hot weather
Love the pub and food
High standard and clean. Great bed and bathroom. Great breakfast. Staff were really helpful.
Roads to location were not great but all else was.
Great breakfast options, lovely pub, quiet, close to Audley End House. Staff were great, friendly
There is a window in the door that woke us up with sunlight from 4am, we ended up taping a magazine over it for the 2nd night. Everything else was great
Lovely place in a picturesque village. Very comfortable room, dog friendly, good walks. Good value for money. Breakfast was excellent and was included. It’s great to be able to stay and be so near the pub.
Water pressure so low I had a wash under the bath tap in the end.
Old world charm, very helpful staff, comfortable room, very good food.
Nothing
Quiet location, large bed and room, bathroom had a bath and shower. Plenty of hot water. Ample parking. Food is amazing! The quality of the food second to none.
Nothing! We have stayed previously and will again. Few suggestions that would help us but not necessarily everyone! - Larger cafetière and kettle black out curtains on window and door. Coat hooks- so can leave them seperate from items in wardrobe.
Everything good (this review for other family member who stayed one night) Comfortable room, good size, all you need
Nothing
Everything done so well. Comfortable huge beds. Decent smart tv. Lovely bathroom. Staff superb. Food for dinner and breakfast were top quality. Good wine list.
Long queue to check in.
Room was nicely decorated and cosy/comfortable
Location - was 20 min drive from main road. Room was on quite a central village road and no double glazing so road noise
Breakfast good
Pillows were awful. Very flat and hard - all four.
Great choice of food.
All OK
Very comfortable and spacious bedroom. Nice breakfast despite the fact that the kitchen oven had broken down.
Room was not attached to the main building. Step down to bedroom with very poor illumination was a potential safety hazard. Some traffic noise.
Restaurant / Bar/ bedroom all very good

A1 nothing not to like
Staff were super helpful!
Just a little hot in the rooms.
Charming country pub - ideal location for channel tunnel and London airports. Comfy beds, friendly staff and great food
Nothing to dislike
good location and very convenient, comfortable room.
Breakfast service was very casual and slow. Customers are expected to fend for themselves with quite a few items and we had to ask for more juice, coffee, water, etc as these ran out . There was a 'diy' feel for this kind of stay , given the high cost. Buffet items were quite limited compared to many places. Waitresses sweet but not looking at what was needed. Staff also very off-hand at check-in and check-out which did not give a positive feel to the stay.
Spacious pristine clean accommodation, wonderful staff, delicious food
Not having a longer break
It would have enough been good to have proper tower fans or air-conditioning to deal with excessive heat
Everything it was excellent
Breakfast was excellent Beds comfortable
Dinner on arrival was poor quality ,cold and covered in a congeeled gravy, room could gave been cleaner.
Pleasant location, friendly staff, excellent breakfast. Comfortable and spacious room
We had a lovely time with friends. Food was excellent and room very cosy. We all really enjoyed the breakfast and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. Would thoroughly recommend for an away holiday.
Nothing, everything perfect. Only the weather was a little iffy.
Shower was a useless dribble
Breakfast was fantastic as were all the staff and the location. The room was well laid out and had everything that you needed. The pub was friendly and a great choice of drinks
There was no remote control for the television in the room. The water pressure was low which made the shower slow. Evening menu was not to my choice personally.
Good sized rooms, comfortable bed. Lovely pub on hand, helpful staff
A bit warm in the room
Easy to find Quiet location No planes heard until after 7am
Nothing
Beautiful property and lovely rooms

Breakfast was excellent, well cooked and fresh.
We ate in the pub at night, and had to wait 45minutes for our meal.
The location was excellent and the staff were so friendly and welcoming. The food was stunning.
Nothing
Shower could do with being more powerful
Lovely room
Carpets had been cleaned in the morning & room was not ventilated - so the carpets were damp.
The room was large and comfortable. The breakfast was very good and the one night we had dinner in the restaurant the food was excellent.
The price of the wine by the glass in the bar seemed very expensive.
Staff were great. Food and drinks all good, reasonable value for money. Room was very spacious and comfortable
The only real fault was the shower was really difficult to navigate. We stayed in Gabba and the showers in the bath, and being 5ft 11 tall, literally I leant over for a shower as the ceilings are low. Can't be helped. Apart from that, great

Dinner was very good with reasonably priced wines......waitress exceptional but good had done with more assistance
I feel that we stayed in a totally different place to some of the more recent reviewers on here. In my opinion this is probably the BEST pub/restaurant with rooms we have ever stayed in. On arrival, realising that I was aided by a walking stick the WONDERFUL Joe offered to show us a choice of rooms in order to best meet my needs, and we ended up in one of Best rooms in a bungalow over the road. The room itself was beautifully decorated and maintained with a massive superking bed and comfy pillows. It was lovely to stay in a room where the wooden furniture was eclectic and not corporate. The huge wetroom also had a bath so we were both happy. Our room was facing the road and we didnt hear ANY noise during the night. We arrived at about 4pm on Friday and we were immediately made to feel welcome by Joe and the other staff members,as well as a grand selection of cheery local folk who were fascinated that we were here for a Scrabble tourney. All the people with dogs had them well under control, and the general atmosphere was buzzing and happy, with no background music to spoil the ambience. The log fire was an added bonus! The pub was quiet upon arrival but by the time went to our room after dinner , both the restaurant and the bar were HEAVING with people having a good time. The food was outstandingly good , both in the evening - the chimichurri steak was the best steak I've ever had. Breakfast fare was clearly well sourced with fresh bread made on site. The chefs are to be commended on a) the menu choices and b) the presentation and the preparation. Good choice of wines too. The staff were all absolutely delightful - friendly and helpful at every point. Joe and all the staff are a credit to the Chestnut Group , and they are entirely the best thing about this fantastic pub. We have already booked our next stay.
Cozy, warm, friendly, welcoming
The only thing we found a little difficult was the amount of choice on the menu. However the chef was very accommodating because our vegetarian didn’t like pumpkin he did make the most delicious mushroom risotto for her.
Everything.
Nothing
A fab second stay! Great food, great atmosphere, great room, great staff.
We all loved if we thought dinner was just pub food we were a bit disappointed with the food but we loved the staff and room very helpful
all good great staff and friendly locals
