Great location for walking and right in the heart of Sedburgh. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The dog felt very welcome too with treats, bed , towel, bowls provided
Good service was rather slow
Lovely, cosy, dog friendly hotel. Cannot wait to return.
Well located. Traditional homely feel.
Lovely room, great pub and quality food all in the centre of Sedbergh! Excellent bed for a perfect nights sleep.
Breakfast not included!
Lovely old building. Excellent food!
Limited parking for guests and extremely narrow entrance to the car park.
The staff is fantastic, and the food is exceptional. We brought our dog with us, and the "dog fee" covered her own bed, treats, and a warm welcome by the entire staff. Strongly recommend.
The rooms haven't been updated in a while. There are a few of the little things that could use some attention, but I would still STRONGLY recommend staying. The service and rooms are a cut above anything else.
Fabulous bedroom and superb dining
Limited parking
Comfortable room Friendly staff mostly
Our room no. 2 was located above a very noisy beer cellar fan which kicked in randomly and all through the night. Rubbish collection happened at 5.15 am and at least 12 large paladins were trundled over the cobbled passage way below our window and when emptied were trundled back ! Of course rubblish has to be collected but I want to warn future guests never to sleep in room 2 !!
Beautiful clean bedroom, comfy bed, shower gel and shampoo/ soap great quality, quiet environment and friendly staff. Breakfast was delicious.
Nothing to dislike- all great and would return. On Booking.com no parking was indicated so we parked in a twin car park, however our from our bedroom balcony we could see that the inn had a small car park and a member of staff asked us where we parked. No big deal, just a comment.
The food was amazing
No breakfast included and was quite noisy up until around 12pm because of the pubs on the Main Street
Perfect location in centre of town. Loved the pared down Japanese style. Dog friendly room was very comfortable - dog bed and dog treats provided which was great.
Nothing
Traditional feel
Hotel and staff were outstanding, Lizzie arranged birthday balloons in room, thanks Lizzie. Food was perfection. The whole experience is highly recommended
Nothing
Beautifully appointed rooms with extremely nice products and big fluffy towels. Tea and coffee in the room with fresh water (still and sparkling) provided every day and a welcome cookie (that was delish). Breakfast was excellent, and the staff were absolutely lovely and couldn't do more for you. The town is a nice place to hang out for a day, and there are a couple of pubs around to have different food if you want.
Breakfast and supper were expensive - but both were excellent, more of a treat than a daily expense. The room could have been cleaner. No heated towel rail - we had just come off of a 4-day hike and needed to dry some stuff. Hairdryer didn't work. The room was quite noisy as the alley that the room was on seemed to be hang-out / smoking area for the staff.
The food was great. A really lovely anniversary meal.
The room was really dirty. Cleaning was months overdue in some areas. We paid £215 (our mistake was to buy off booking.com) for a room with no breakfast and the room needed a good spring clean and there was paint peeling off damp walls. Ingrained dirt, dust and mould in main hallways, the room, our bathroom.
Great food and atmosphere. friendly staff
They had thought through everything. Such a lovely little greeting of coffee and cookies
Hot old building - exceptional heat wave
The decor and the little touches of luxury were lovely. The bathroom is bright, clean, and modern with excellent vanity space a rainfall shower head, and a Bluetooth speaker in the mirror. The staff was so friendly and helpful.
The rooms facing the street are loud, especially on warm days when closing the windows isn’t an option.
breakfast was ok but i would have preferred it included in room rate. Options are otheriwse limited in Sedburgh
It felt a little pricey really. Wine pretty expensive per glass but i guess thats what tourists are for!
Really loved the warm, friendly welcome. Very characterful hotel with being so old.
Its location in the middle of the village and having a car park at the rear. Superb spacious and comfortable bedroom. It was curry night when we stayed and it was absolutely superb; tasted so fresh and delicious.
Charming old inn in a beautiful location.
Nothing really, however it’s a tight squeeze to drive into the car park.
Friendly, helpful staff. Comfortable bed with quality duvet and pillows. Very good evening meal and breakfast was good too.
The music played at breakfast was far too loud and not suitable. I wouldn't play it at home. If music must be played choose instrumental. Bedroom was a little chilly (weather was wet and below average for time of year) and we could not turn on the radiator without asking the staff to boost it from another source.
The location and the food
We was supposed to stay two night but there was bed bugs and flees. I’m 5 months pregnant and when I went to talk about it one of the woman said I’ll change the sheets :| the room needs flee bombing we was then offered to change rooms but at that point my partner fell ill and I was covered in bites and rashes I wasn’t even refunded for the one night we actually stayed I’ve never wanted to get home from somewhere so bad in my life
Breakfast was superb! The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. Lovely rooms with nice ensuite.
The evening menu was small and so were the portion sizes. Quite pricey. Also I am not sure if all the rooms allow dogs, but there was dog hair which is expected. But as someone who doesn't take their dog to a hotel, I would prefer the option of a non dog room as the cleanliness wasn't great. This was the only downfall.
Excellent room; coffee bags, fresh milk and even home-baked cookies with a personal message from the team. Little touches like that make a huge difference. Lovely large shower, and bathroom. Super comfy bed, and a nice temperature.
Would have been fab if had a bath - some rooms did I gather. But a minor point and doesn’t detract from the overall experience.
A real treat, very comfortable and curry night was delicious.
Food and service inside hotel very good. Outside service nil.
Disabled and climbing upstairs to the top floor.
Very comfortable room. Staff went above and beyond to bring us an extra chair so that we could both attend a zoom meeting. Dinner very good as always, as was breakfast. Warm welcome.
All of it. The staff were amazing The bed, bedroom and bathroom were perfect. Good safe spot for our bicycles.
Great location, good staff, nice room. Hotel very helpful in changing room dates at short notice. Dinner menu good, wine see below...
The wine list with dinner is unusual. While its good to see some wines that you dont normally come across it would be nice to have a few staples like a good reasonably priced chardonnay, vioginer, gavi etc
The Black Bull Inn is idyllically and at the same time centrally located, very charming with its original architecture and design, has a fabulous cuisine, and staff that goes above and beyond to make their guests welcome and comfortable.

Lovely room, bed, linen, food, staff.
I prefer an enclosed loo.
the stair case
For £150.00 without breakfast ,very disappointed and underwhelmd, wires hanging out of the tv it just felt unfinished .the tea cups are designer, appreciated however the sainnd pattern on the rim was not .. lots of potential
Lovely place and bar
Room was a bit small but others were available
The staff were welcoming and very helpful. The food and wine were excellent with enthusiastic, knowledgeable service. The room was comfortable and well equipped. Mo
Absolutely no negatives.
Location central to the village. Really big comfy bed and bath in room
It was way overpriced at £340 for 2 nights without a breakfast. No iron in room and had to go up and down 2 flights of stairs to get one. Not clear where the parking was. We booked for the purposes of booking the tasting menu which was a real selling point but the chef was away and we couldn't book it. We did eat in the restaurant but my meal was £36 and I had to send it back it was advertised as steak and 2 lumps of cold beef were on the plate that tasted of nothing. Shame really. In the room the lights were so dull you couldn't do your make up etc I had to use my phone torch.
Food was excellent!!
Roos with charm, nice restaurant
Very cozy, nice rooms, great food. We will come back!
Rooms have a modern style. Lovely sweeping staircase. Main bar and restaurant are lovely.
Despite modern styling rooms are actually quite basic and not particularly clean or well maintained. Our room had a leaking door to the balcony and a very dusty and wonky main light fittings. Not a great problem, but for the price and advertised premium style of the BB we expected more. The hallway leading to the room was rather run down with an untidy area with a chair and table that seeemed out of place with a premium hotel. Check in was a little strange with the barman rather busy with Sunday lunch service and no where obvious to check in.
Traditional feel and friendly welcome
Gemütliches Zimmer Schönes Restaurant

All was nice
Food was delicious but veg and vegan options were not that great for evening meal. It was fine for us as sometimes we eat fish, which was available and delicious. The one vegan option we tried was delucious but not really a full meal as was only veg and contained no protein foods.
Breakfast was great the room was fantastic
Everything was great
Wonderful staff, food, decor and ambience. Really comfortable bed. Lovely clean room with super touches eg quality toiletries and complementary drinks and biscuits.
Nothing
Cannot fault this in anyway. Staff were so friendly and great with dogs. The sharer beef brisket was amazing

The property was renovated with high quality fixtures and fittings and maintained to a high quality. The room was very comfortable as was the bed. The bathroom was lovely with access to shampoo and shower gel. The room was made very cosy for us on checkin. The heating was on and welcomed on a cold wet winters day. We took our dog with us and there was a clean bed, towel and food bowls with a bag of treats waiting for her. The coffee in the room was delicious as was the home made cookies left for us. Breakfast was delicious but could not understand why we paid separate for coffee and juice and why it wasn’t all included in one price.
I think we were given a different price as we booked with booking.com for dinner and breakfast. Dinner was quite expensive for pie!! There was no option on booking.com to book breakfast in the price.
Couldn't fault the facilities and the staff. Made very welcome.
When booking we knew it was pie night but weren't aware that we could only have pie! It was very nice but would have preferred something else, especially as it was £25, Cotswolds pricing, ie Farmer's Dog. The breakfast was charged at £13.95 plus glass of orange £2.40, tea at £3.15 making £19.50. We weren't advised that they were extra!!
Comfy spacious bed, large bathroom. Warm and cosy. Fantastic food
Nothing
Breakfast was lovely and enjoyed the room out back where we watched Rugby. James was very accommodating and attentive. Great time do many thanks.
Can’t think of anything.
Location, atmosphere
-
Very lovely inside and trendy decor.
Yeh guy at breakfast was very rude! In contrast to the evening staff who were super friendly
The food was excellent with a nice atmosphere. It was home cooked not prepackaged. Top quality and the breakfast was excellent. Extensive drinks menu too.
The English Sparkling wine was awful. I have had much better brands.
Staff in the restaurant Comfortable bed Very good shower
Not worth the price Not that clean Room tiered Evening meal average considering price Check in and check out poor, felt like an inconvenience.
Very comfortable bed. Wonderful complimentary refreshment tray with fresh milk and yummy biscuits. Lovely view from the bedroom window.
Warm friendly atmosphere, excellent food, the building itself ... everything, infact
There was nothing we didn't like.
Wonderful food - superb chef
Excellent quality food. Very comfortable beds. Good shower. We appreciated the still and sparkling water, and tea and coffee facilities in the room.
Nothing
Really lovely staff
Breakfast was very disappointing, the bread was inedible and tge porridge tasteless. Dinner was good but over priced.
Fine old pub/hotel
Food very good but pricey.
Comfortable room, cleanly presented. Although fronting main street, very quiet. No noise from adjoining rooms
Only very minor criticism would be the use of sourdough bread for sandwiches and fried bread. Personal preference would be ordinary white or wholemeal
Location, ambience, lovely rooms, great food, friendly staff
-
A wonderful location, excellent dining and friendly staff. The bed was very comfortable and nice bathroom. I was also allowed to check in at 1.30pm. Good to see the pigs slumbering in the garden too!
Being picky my room was a little noisy. Bad timing with the bin men emptying bins at 6.45am was unfortunate in that it was right outside my window!
Starter was excellent - Homus and buscuit
Veg was tough
Being older we didn't want a big evening meal. The young lady said "leave it with me" and soon knocked on our room to tell us that the chef had come up with an alternative. It was delicious!
Ambiance, personnel, décoration, restaurant
Le prix trop élevé Le prix aussi pour le chien 30£!!!
The cookies in the bedroom was a nice touch.
The decor was too dark, cold and lack atmosphere. Also someone else was able to unlock our door, who accidentally thought it was there room!!! Didn’t like the idea our room key was the same key to use for the other rooms of hotel. No designated reception area.
Room ok .
On arrival ordered food and was given a buzzer as we were eating in the garden. Buzzer goes off and you go and collect your food. It never went off. Staff bought out meal and said it had been sitting there 10 mins! Although my partners meal was ok my burger was burnt on the outside. In the room the wardrobe mirror was taped up. The smoke detector in the room would flash intermittently at night. Grouting around the bath black. One evening 9.pm, noisy children running wild in the corridors. Very dark hotel lighting very poor in ground floor corridors. Restaurant decor, black and brown colors. Nice place to eat if you are a manic depressive!
