Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Bed too old and too soft and pillows old. Shower very poor in bath. No WiFi in room.
Ideal location. Interesting building. Friendly staff. Good breakfast.
Cracks in basin. Split in seat fabric of chair.
Lovely location set in beautiful surroundings Breakfast freshly made
Room bit tired
Beautiful old building, some lovely features and history. But sadly, very tired with old furniture and decor, and not very clean. Check in was ok and friendly (room 12) a long winding trek to the room up various corridors and stairs (no lift as far as I could see). View looking out the front drive. Room was ok, tea/coffee/hairdryer, didn't use wifi. Breakfast was ok, hot food and various cereals/toast/yoghurts etc. Although coffee machine a bit poor. Location is great for town centre though, less than a 5 min walk
Carpets felt old and threadbare, in the corridor sticky tape over carpet tears. Bathroom very basic, didn't even use the shower, it sprayed in every direction, obviously blocked full of whatever (needs new showerheads at least). Water was tepid, never got hot. We paid around £85 inc breakfast, but feel this place needs £20 knocking off...by all accounts there's a Premier Inn down the road which would have been nicer. When we arrived back late at night, I think one of the staff (maybe the chef?) had been smoking dope outside the front, not very professional I think, plus it smells disgusting
It’s location was good & it’s a lovely old property
The maintenance was poor, the doors didn’t lock from the inside, the toilet roll holder was broken, you had to stand on a chair to close the curtains properly & a tap was dripping
Interesting
Looked a little tired
Perfect location for access to Hitchin. Set in lovely grounds
The rooms are very tired and need refurbishing. Bathroom very dated, tiny shower and Luke warm water. Breakfast was inedible, cheap produce and had been sat out for ages, eggs all dried up
The staff were delightful
The hotel is in bad repair with adhesive tape on worn carpets and the shower was poor. The mattress was just about ok but made to look better with nice linen
Very friendly staff, old hotel but very in tune with the area. The town is just beautiful and 2 minutes walk. Bedroom was comfy with everything you need. Lovely bar onsite if you just fancy coming back early.
No aircon or fan in room. We were there when it was 30 degrees and we nearly died with the heat. Even a fan may be helpful as I know its hard to install new aircon in old buildings.
Breakfast needs black pudding, your staff were great
The bacon
The room was very picturesque, with a four poster bed. The building was lovely and the staff friendly enough.
There was no hot water, luke warm at best. The shower was connected to mixer taps rather than an over the head one, only one small bottle of shampoo was provided, no shower gel or anything else, so I think this was left by someone else. There was a basket for coffee pods, but no pods. The mattress was so soft I felt like I was on a boat whenever my husband moved. I was expecting a large double, i.e. a king size bed, but it was just large as in high and a four poster. My husband's bed side light was about as powerful as a glow bug. The breakfast left a lot to be desired too.
The location was good for Hitchin and the festival
Unfortunately, the hotel is very run down and in need of some TLC. Carpets were threadbare, bathroom was grotty and the shower was poor
The staff were all amazing - very professional and enabled to the stay to be great.
Good location for Hitchin Priory festival days
Never anyone on reception, took ages to find a staff member, they seem to be given zones in the hotel to work in and they can't leave their zone and you have to wait a long time to find anyone to help I. E. At reception, at the bar etc. Rooms are very basic, threadbare carpet, worst bed I've ever slept in, uncomfortable, musty sheets, bathroom was appealing, cracked tiles, not clean. Whole place is dated and not somewhere if ever want to stay again. 2 star at best.
Beautiful historic main building. Clean if dated rooms in the annex. Bathrooms need a serious update.
Friendly and clean
Quirky hotel with excellent facilities and old priory atmosphere Super breakfast Great bar with comfy sofas
Central location for town and concert (in the grounds of the property!)
Dated furnishings
Lovely staff, really helpful and go out of their way to help.
Hotel looks tired and bedrooms need an upgrade.
Amazing old building. My room was full of character. The breakfast was standard - ok choices.
Old fashioned and outdated. The public areas were grim.
Location great for what we needed.
Old and run down hotel. Rooms needs painting, bathroom looked like it hadn't been changed for 50 years, not the cleanest rooms aswell. Needs a refurb.
Breakfast was good, did have to wait for ot to be replenished but good quality. Location great stayed for a concert. Plenty of parking
Rooms were smaller than I expected, also seemed very dated especially the bathroom. We had two rooms and both had no electricity working. Spoke to reception and this was resolved immediately. Even with the above I would stay again
Very nice, lots of choice
Good location and the pastries at breakfast were really good
Very little staff on but when came he was helpful and allowed me to check in early.
Doskonała lokalizacja. Miła i pomocna obsługa oraz pyszne śniadanie. Przyjemna atmosfera pobytu :)
A fabulous architectural reconversion
No complain
The hotel was lovely.
Bed was hard.
Mostly dreadful, tired, run down and filthy. Sums it up perfectly. Abandoned car in the car park with most of Hitchin’s dog owners using the grounds as a public toilet for their quadrupeds. Grotty
All of it
Location was great, lovely setting, friendly staff, adequate room.
The bathroom is in need of a deep clean, nooks and crannies just a little grubby.
The location, the scenery and the old building were beautiful. The staff were all very friendly and helpful.
The bathroom was in need of an upgrade. Although as clean as possible it had an air of a mens cloakroom which spoilt the comfort of the room. The shower was not good-black mould along the bottom seal and so small it was difficult to use without leaving the door open-so a towel needed to go on the floor. The faucet was large and stuck out making the space smaller and the head of the shower needed clearing as the water went in every direction except downwards:if you dropped the soap Lord help you!!! 🤪
The staff and breakfast was really good.
Breakfast was excellent, the bed excellent the staff great
The room no 8 needs a good clean so much dust and cobwebs plus a biscuit that looks like it's been there for ages ,the room needs a paint job and the bathroom could do with a upgrade .....
Location next to town centre, access to countryside south of Hitchin, good parking and the building itself. Friendly and helpful staff.
Heat in my Priory Inn room, even with a fan...better in Priory Hotel room.
not much
Almost most every thing
Location. Visually impressive
Seemed a little down trodded. Cracked tiles in the bathroom and looked in need of minor upgrades such as curtains not hanging up fully and mix of low quality side lamps and better quality ones which seemed odd
Location, staff and service were excellent. Breakfast was ok . Thankfully chanda produced wonderful service and poached eggs.
There were electrical maintenance issues in our original room , which should have been attended to before we got there. We were moved next door and the same electrical issue was in this room. Room was clean , but tired abd tatty. Bathroom was adequate . But needs updating..
Centrally located with friendly staff.
The decor and room were tired and in need updating. The room was clean, however. The quality of the food available was obviously predicated on cost and generally v poor. The cooked breakfast virtually inedible.
Location
N/a
the staff ,David in particular was excellent the chef and his menu sublime ,which i wasnt expecting Friendly and accessible cant fault
the room was little tired
The breakfast was very good. Plenty of choice and self service. If a cooked breakfast was required it was served but we chose continental.
There was no hot water. The panel covering the pipes under the sink was laying on the bathroom floor and there was a dribble of water from the pipe. We were not aware there were so many stairs and no lift.
Very easy parking system, very helpful staff, very lovely scenery & town, loved the old school British vibe of the architecture, they helped book a taxi for the concert I was going to which was a fair distance away, the breakfast was better then I would have expected, very clean rooms with comfortable beds & easy shower to use + free toiletries if you were not in possession of any. Accommodation can always be less pricy in this current economy, but I have paid more for less! Overall very satisfied with my stay here, will definitely go back if In the area.
Nothing to not like, really, the man behind the bar couldn’t pour a pint to save his life lol, but it’s a hotel at the end of the day, not a pub & he happily repoured with my guidance haha, was a very friendly gentleman as were all the staff.
Location, breakfast and staff were fantastic
Bed very hard n lumpy but in other parts soft, water pressure is a major issue, to say the shower trickles is an understatement and toilet difficult to flush away and doesn't refill for a good 15mins
This is second time staying here and would use again if in area with work.
Staff, location
Decor, heat
I booked this hotel as the Premier Inn was fully booked and it won’t happen again. It unfortunately lives up to the 3.2 reviews. On a positive note, the staff were lovely, the grounds are nice and the location is excellent. The bed was fairly comfortable too. We didn’t use the bar or restaurant so can’t comment on that but our room (16) was dreadful. Not helped by the heatwave in this attic room. It’s up loads of stairs and when you get there it’s a tired, boiling hot room with no air conditioning, old and broken furniture. Only one bedside lamp. The other bedside table had a small TV on it rather than on the desk or wall. Weird. Could really do with a major overhaul.
Building, location
WiFi poor, average breakfast
Great building close to the town centre yet very quiet. It's set in parkland, with good free parking.
Tiered, needs a make over. Has great potential.
Perfect location and very quiet which was great. Staff very friendly
My room was not clean when I checked in, waited an additional 45 minutes to have my room ready (even though check-in is at 3pm, I didn't get into my room until 3:30pm). Staff were very friendly and offered to help as much as they could though.
Ideal location to walk into town plus short distance from M1 and A1
Lounge bar could be a little cooler
Hotel location and surrounding are lovely.
The shower head could have been better.
We didn’t stay for breakfast. Although the staff were very accommodating with providing us with fans as it was an extremely hot day
The fact that the room had no air con
Location was great
Very dated and short staffed
The staff were super and it was in a great location
The size of the shower and bedroom in general. It needs an overhaul.
Breakfast ok, but gluten free option very limited.we liked that we could open/ leave our bedroom window open , as there was a high temp,
Maybe offer gluten free options on cereals etc.
Great place to stay. Beautiful grounds and location with a lot of character. The staff were great. Friendly and welcoming. Would definitely recommend this property.
Everything was great
The property was interesting & staff were as helpful as they could be. The bedding & towels were clean.
We arrived earlier than the book-in time because we were attending a wedding nearby & needed to get changed after travelling. We were told we could have paid extra to book in early but this was the first we knew of this option. We had to get ready in the cloakroom & were offered to leave our luggage in reception which wasn’t manned all the time & we felt it was insecure. The room was extremely basic with a kettle on a tray & limited beverage options. There were far too many cushions on the bed with nowhere to put them & the pillows were lumpy & uncomfortable. We were grateful for the electric fan in our room during this very hot spell but it was noisy, as was the fan in the tired bathroom. The towel rail was broken, the tiles were cracked on the floor & the shower was a woeful hand held type not a power shower. We only had one hand towel between us but did have two bath towels. There was no mini fridge & no bottled water provided. I didn’t feel happy taking medication with water from the bathroom sink that may not have been mains water. The corridor doors leading to our room were not clearly signed & could be a potential risk if there was a fire. There were terrible stains on the carpet in one of the function rooms. All in all, the staff were friendly & mostly helpful. The cooked breakfast was ok but the making your own tea & toast was a strange arrangement. It was all a bit disjointed. The whole place could do with some TLC & a bit or reorganising. I didn’t take any photos.
Bra Frukost
Dåligt VIFI i vårt rum
Wonderful! Beautiful meal also… David and the night porter (apologies don’t know your name) are a delight…..David goes above and beyond for you and has such a beautiful soul! Hope to see you soon Nikki Lauren and Sue xxx
It my second time here, I really enjoy this hotel the food is excellent and so is the service and the staff are exceptional location was great for me also. Bed nice and comfortable too.
The only negative was that there was no hot running water for the shower. So I had to take a cold one. I understand the building is very old and takes a while to heat up the pipes but even after 30 minutes of running the water it was some cold still. This the only negative comment,
Beautiful old building and central location.
The hotel is dated and needs a lot of work to get it up to an acceptable standard. Room was dingy with a badly stained carpet. The whole place needed a good clean. The key to my room didn't work correctly - apparently there was a knack to how you 'wiggled' it but every time I needed entry to my room, I had to fetch a member of staff. Bad flooding outside the hotel near the carpark - I had to waddle through to ankle-deep and got my jeans soaking wet and ruined my trainers.
The staff were absolutely amazing, all very kind, and they went out of their way to look after us! We arrived early, had a warm, professional greeting and were able to leave our car and luggage while we met up with friends. Two staff members ended up giving us history lessons and tours later in the evening when we returned, including places not currently used by the hotel, which was a real treat! We watched the sun set in the beautiful gardens and even had a cozy area in the oldest part of the hotel to chat with no one around. I thought it was pretty magical!
Our room was in the oldest part of the hotel, and we were warned that the water may take a while to heat up. We only turned the hot water on and it was mostly lukewarm/never really heated up but not cold, so absolutely fine. The coffee and sausages at breakfast were not good, but I liked the hash browns, fresh fruit, and yogurt.
Breakfast was good, served early which suited our needs. The staff were pleasant and helpful but seemed to be jack of all trades.
Our bedroom was almost up in the attic. It was small, the bathroom was worn with marks in the bath and the curtain was old and stained, and there was no plug in the sink (the integral one had broken). The end of one of the beds was broken. The windows were dirty and didn't close properly
Locatie
Lauwe douche
Location is amazing and its a beautiful old building! The staff where great and extremely welcoming
The building is a little tired! Its such a shame as its a beautiful building in an amazing location. Taped down carpet and tempid warm water for the shower
Location great, breakfasts wowful! The hotel is very tired and could do with a complete renovation.
Breakfast choices very poor if you do not eat hot food at breakfast!
Location was beautiful & central to town with access to shops & restaurants. Bar area was nice to relax in during the evening. Original features of the building were also beautiful.
Room was very dated. Bathroom had broken toilet roll holder. Broken plug, and was not very clean. No additional pillows. No blackout curtains. Very restrictive restaurant menu. There was also quite a wait to check in.
Nothing I’m afraid
It’s basically a DSS hostel type thing. Very very uncomfortable bed, horrible temperature, no fridge, no anything not even water. This is a terrible guesthouse in a beautiful building. Such a shame it’s been left like this. We left at 5am
A very good full English. No complaints. Breakfast room itself very comfortable, in a very interesting historic property. Easy car parking. Great location
I do much prefer a cooking to order rather than buffet.
No hot water in the main house.
The venue
Management and 70’s throwback room, no hot water and dated poor quality
I felt it needed some TLC, gardens were overgrown, rooms need a make over especially the bathrooms!!
The bathroom!!
Location and style
No hot water!
Nothing
No aircon, it was a wedding we was attending two people were overcome with the heat. The staff need to learn to smile once in a while. The room are very dated . Bathroom had mold on the ceiling. Very over priced for what you get. Uncomfortable bed and pillows. I would recommend staying at the premier inn down the road.
The location. The building is rather impressive from the distance.
Sadly this building needs a lot of basic maintenance, the windows are rotten. The car park is very neglected. There should be a health and safety warning about bedrooms 16/17 as the stairs up to them are very tight. The exceptionally low ceilings are not good for anyone over 5 ft 9 inches. There is a mouldy smell throughout the building!
The hotel room was very comfortable and quiet. The staff were very polite and helpful. Generous cooked breakfast. Amazing historic building.
Room could do with being updated. Especially the bathroom. Would have preferred fresh coffee at breakfast rather than the machine.
Location and staff were great .
The room was far to bright , At 4am I thought it was early morning due to the outside lights from the hotel shining in to the room. The alarm bell also went off at 3am which was not great but I would imagine out of the control of the hotel. The breakfast was really poor whilst the staff member was lovely the eggs where to creamy and the bacon was sizzled into a crisp. I didn't bother going for the second morning and ate out,.
Location
Uncomfortable beds and no fans/air-con
Great Breakfast. Lovely staff in breakfast room.
Window in bedroom wouldn't stay open. Shower weak. Tv tiny. Curtain unattached to rings. very small room.
Staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming.
Shower screen was tired and marked, shower wasn't very powerful although we appreciate it is an old building.
Friendly staff
Historic building and beautiful grounds
It’s tired decoration
The property itself is full of history & a beautiful building.
Sadly The Priory is in desperate need of work. The paintwork is tired, chipped & peeling throughout the building. Panels are missing from the ceiling in places showing plumbing & wiring. There are also many damp patches & stains. The curtains in our room were held on by the only 2 remaining curtain rings which meant they could not be closed leaving the outside floodlights to beam straight into the room all night. The heating system is also faulty. The radiators in our room were so hot I burnt my leg on the one in the bathroom. Upon opening any windows to lower the excessive heat in the room we found the sash system to be broken making the windows instantly close again. A very uncomfortable sleepless night. We ordered a “full English” breakfast in the morning & wished we hadn’t. We expected much better from this hotel than to be served what was obviously cheap bulk catering quality food. The scrambled egg had a dreadful metallic taste, the baked beans were so sweet that they were unbeatable, the tomato was tasteless & although the sausage purported to be pork it certainly didn’t taste like it. Most of the breakfast remained on the plate. It’s so sad to see a once prestigious hotel like this fall into disrepair & its standards drop to this level
Lovely staff, ideal spot in Hitchin.
Hitchin priory is a lovely spot to stay but though the room was comfortable it was dated and could do with some more modernisation especially the bathroom. We had 2 rooms booked our second room was dirty and the curtains were broken
Location and the manager on our arrival
Having to move rooms twice
The historic atmosphere and the proximity to the centre of the town.
In my room the curtains had come off the track and I could not close them properly to block out the light. The heating was turned off but the small heater they put in the room only worked for the first night and as the weather was cold this was not good. I have never in my life experienced such a small shower which I only just fitted into. I am a size 12 so anyone larger would have experienced extreme difficulty. The water was also lukewarm.
The staff member David was so nice and welcoming. He showed us exactly where to go, had a nice conversation with us and helped my mum celebrate her birthday. Thank you, David!
Great breakfast. Friendly staff
Safety in bath tub. Difficult for older person. Lacking phone for safety concerns
Lovely hotel.
Breakfast was late but it was very good
The room could be more spacious and in the new part of the hotel
Poor, breakfast was due to start at 8am, they had an issue with the kitchen so on arrival for breakfast had to wait a further 40 mins for hot food and then an extra 10 for hash browns, then as i was finishing up he came out with pastries almost an hour at 9am, poor choice of fresh fruit just not very appealing minimal stuff out, cheap jams and only 4 choices of cereal, fresh tea from a pot would have been nice but if was a coffee machine, no apple juice. Fresh bread would have also been a good idea because sliced brown and white was all that was on offer
Breakfast, bathroom with a bath but no bath plug and staff could not find one for me even though i specifically rang before hand asking for a room with a bath. long hairs on bath wall and around soap dish, no toilet brush, heating was on full power in the bathroom all night and we could not open the windows had to prop them up with our water bottles which meant we could nt drink out of them
Good location, breakfast was OK, location of our dining table was good, staff very good.
Bed was too hard for my liking. Would have been nice to have an overhead shower in the bath, couldn't open a window for fresh air.
The staff were beyond lovely and kind. And the building is stunning!
Maybe the bring lights that shone outside. But the curtains were thick enough that it wasnt awful.
Very nice breakfast, very nice evening meal, staff very helpful & interested in reason for our visit. Chef produced excellent seabream fish dish, came and chatted to us & interesting link. Nice grounds, quiet location. Close to shops & town centre. Nice room, comfortable bed.
WiFi sat nav nightmare directions with road resurfacing when we arrived & very stressful! Shower a bit of a challenge due to my mobility vulnerable adult health condition.
We have stayed here before but many years ago and before the Premier Inn was built. However, since the last visit at the Premier Inn was not that great, we thought for an extra £15 a night, we might treat ourselves to a night here again. However, the visit was not great! On arrival we did not know where reception was and was greeted by a sign saying to pick up the phone and wait 5 seconds to be connected, we were eventually greeted by a person who ended up checking us in. Now, I know it's an historical building and has its charms but, the signs to our room were quite confusing. The room itself, although small, was fine and the bed was adequate (a standard double). But, the layout of the room was extremely bizarre! The TV was next to the bed, meaning only the person next to it would be able to view it, there was no air conditioning, but that's fine I guess for the history of the building. The windows were dirty, the bathroom window wouldn't close, the 'cold' water trickled out and was NEVER cold at all! There was no water in the room as we couldn't drink the water from the bathroom. When it cam to breakfast, that was also confusing, on arrival they were only just setting up, again fine, but the signs were confusing, the sign for the bread stated to keep the flap closed and it was wide open, when selecting the bread it was hard and slightly stale. The signs stated fried egg, when I asked, she said you have to ask for them as they make them fresh, so why not say that somewhere instead of listing them? Overall, for the money, I might try the Premier Inna again or an alternative hotel in the centre, a shame as I think they could be so much better!
Very beautiful and interesting historic building
Lovely setting and building a short walk into centre . Large open grounds all staff we met were really friendly .The building is lovely with lots of history .
Car park being a short walk out of sight in a wooded area looked untidy and could do with a litter pick .Parts of building were looking tired with gaffa tape covering holes in carpet in corridors . Main issue was size of shower cubicle that was very small .I am average size and nearly every time i turned around around in it i accidently turned shower off . A person of larger size would probably struggle to get in it .
Beautiful building, car parking for disabled, helpful staff, position in town,
Limited choice for breakfast, no fried eggs or healthy cereal, no marmalade, room was dingy, stains on ceiling, no plug on sink , lack of plug sockets, paid £94 .. not value for money,
Very friendly staff who were very accommodating, beautiful country groinds to the back and 2 fhe front a lovley hitoric market town so you get the best of both worlds. Speacial thank you to David.
I didn't realise it was Heritage England site! Parrs of it has original stone walls giving it so much character. Gorgeous old features. Great selection of drinks and a good variety on the menu too
Car park is a bit ropey and the room was a little cool.
Not a lot!
Last stayed here in 2019, this visit was extremely disappointing, the hotel is tired and uncared for. Yes it was cheap, but now I know why! It wasn't good. Even the car park is overgrown and a mess, which unfortunately represented the overall experience. I won't be returning.
The reasonably secure car park for a motorbike. The location for Hitchin centre is excellent. Nice historical building. The reception staff were very helpful.
The shower cubicle was a tiny triangle. The shower head holder was loose. The shower pressure was poor.
