In town, good location. Rooms and corridors dated-possibly due to the hotel been old and having planning restrictions. Car park can be tricky to get a space when busy.
Quiet and safe
Great
We had a twin room which was not in the main building. The room was spotlessly clean, comfortable beds and the bathroom was very nice. Everything you would want. We didn't eat in the pub or have breakfast as we were going to an early afternoon event which was serving food. We did have a drink and were surprised at the price of the drinks. They were very reasonable. There was a Wetherspoons next door so maybe that was due to the competition. We were right in the centre of Hitchin, which is a lovely place. Some very nice shops and really interesting. We were there for 2 days and had a very enjoyable stay. I would recommend this hotel for a short stay.
Downstairs bar area / outside great. Rooms amd especially bathroom dated, old, dirty.... Staff very friendly and helpful.
Very dated room,in need of modernisation.
Old building which needs so tlc no lift and lits of stairs
The staff Sean, Monika and Erin were exceptional. They were friendly, personable, accommodating, attentive and polite. The room was clean and spacious. The hotel menu had a good variety and the food was excellent. It was a great place to stay!
Stayed for one night - the hotel is in an excellent position and the breakfast was nice - however the room was really tired and the shower room well needed attention smelt musty and the shower is way to small and I’m not big - a finally positive was the bed was comfortable although not big enough if you are over 5ft8.
Spot on for a quick overnight stay. Bang in the middle of this nice market town with the huge bonus of its own parking. Room was absolutely fine and breakfast was a bit of a bargain for both continental and cooked to order options. Had all the classic pub food available but was surrounded by restaurants and bars. Would definitely stay again if I return. Nice one!
A really lovely hotel right in the heart of Hitchin. Close to everything you might need. Will stay again.
Wonderful!
This is my go to place now when in the area. 5* for everything from location to staff and reasonably priced. No negatives at all
This is an old building and has some limitations on what it can do to improve. Rooms and corridors are in need of a refurb. Shower cubicle was tiny. Staff were good and the check in person on reception was very friendly and knowledgeable. Public areas nice and in a good location.
Quaint and charming building, nods to its history. Staff were really friendly and accomodating. The room was reasonably sized and clean. Both it and the bathroom would benefit from being spruced up - the decor is really tired and the window wouldn't shut properly. However, the bed was really comfortable and that made up it. Very good value for the price. Would stay there again.
Typical of a Greene King pub Hotel clean and comfortable but quite basic free on-site parking and breakfast available from 7 am
Great for an overnight stay. Friendly staff and pleasant surroundings.
Clean and modern Shower very good Car parking a bit of an issue
An old and historic property- a bit querky. Staff very helpful but the rooms were basic and the lighting, in particular, was poor.
Excellent
The whole building need materials repaired or replaced toilet don’t flush properly shower not good bed too small the floor in the room uneven we were there for a reunion the organiser booked a table for 12 people for evening meal and the organiser checked to remind hotel manager on three separate weeks coming up to the day of the stay than when the day came the organiser checked again about the booking for the table and the manager said they never received a booking for the table so the organiser had to find something else for the meal so the hotel closed the bar at six pm so it was a poor even alround
We were attending a reunion dinner in Hitchin and did not want to be driving home late so we arranged to stay in town. We were therefore only staying for sleep and breakfast. The beds themselves were comfortable but the radiator in the room was not working which made for a cold night, especially as the windows were not double glazed. Breakfast was included and was excellent, with any combinaton of buffet and cooked items.
Not a place for a quiet, relaxed getaway.
Had very comfortable and affordable stay whilst visiting family in Hitchin. Would definitely consider returning. All staff were very helpful. Left a couple of items in the room on leaving and these were cheerfully found and kept on reception for pick up.
Clean and comfortable
Good value for money hotel in the centre of this market town. Perfect venue.
Another good stay at the sun inn
Rooms were quiet and comfortable but a bit tired. Badly in need of an upgrade
Always a great stay and the staff are amazing, friendly and fun. Great room & the cleaners are amazing too. Highly recommend 👌
Food was pretty awful and overpriced. Wished we had walked into town where there were loads of really good restaurants
Comfy beds and nice meals staff very helpful
We had hardly any sleep the door constantly being open and closed you can here the staff talking in the foyer from the bedroom. We had staff coming in early hours setting up for breakfast banging doors it was the worst nights sleep i have ever had. Staff were lovely but awful stay i wouldnt stay again if i had to stay in the main building.
It was really good value for money lovely stay
Great hotel nice staff convenient would stay again x
Comfortable and well-placed in the centre of town.
Started well, receptionist very helpful, and free parking if you can find a space (we did). Room small but OK, clean enough. But two things let it down. The noise from people walking through the courtyard in the evening was unbearable. We were expecting a bit of noise, and were out quite late ourselves, but there was shouting and chanting etc until the small hours. The room was very hot so we had to choose noise over heat and keep the window open (no aircon). The breakfast was very poor, I love a full English, and this was the first time I've ever left one. The service was non existent, no cold water, no hot water, no tea bags. And not just us, others were sending things back to be cooked or changed
Brilliant location. Friendly helpful staff. We will return
I was happy with the Sun hotel for the price I paid. It was relatively cheap and I thought the hotel was good value. It is a very old listed building and there are timbers that are hundreds of years old visible throughout. As a result of the age some of the floors and walls are uneven but this adds to the character. The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was tasty.
Room was smelly, foisty, damp. Over charged initially by £1k!! Noisy beyond belief. Staff off duty, drunk and loud in pub.
A very pleasant stay. Lovely staff and room, overall good experience.
Greeting was okay, I asked for my invoice to be emailed to me and at time of writing (over 24 hours after arrival) still not received. I was in room 3 on ground floor, bed was comfortable, desk to work at in room and en-suite was okay. Window in en-suite was open but too high up to be closed. In morning when I got in shower there was no hot water from shower. The sink had hot water. When I told staff on leaving about the lack of hot water from shower, he did not seem that interested or bothered. Lots of places in High Street to go and eat at. Will not stay here again.
Room leading directly above the walkway and pub car park - very loud outside of room until around 11.30 pm.
Room was clean and had space. However wall paper peeling off walls. Marks on walls and doors. Bed uncomfortable to sleep on. Bathroom very moist with condensation everywhere. Rooms noisy above and adjacent. Reception helpful and friendly. Dont eat at Green King pub better food available at a cheaper price next door in Wetherspoons.
This is the best place to stay if you want the real old England experience. Food and service was outstanding. Staff were very attentive. I highly recommend!
Room a little wonky but is an old building so fitted well, could make you feel sickish if was extremely drunk
Staff were lovely but room v dated and bathroom small and not that clean. Woken by groups of people in the hotel courtyard outside our room several times.
I was in Hitchin for funeral so was convenient and low room rate however did no have breakfast as water was cold all the time but rooms are comfortable and clean als good shower
The welcome here is warm and genuine. The corridors are faded and in places smell a bit funny but the rooms are clean with lovely bedlinen, a proper wardrobe and two chairs- most hotels only provide one in standard rooms.. Bathroom was sparkling and spacious, but nowhere to put toiletries etc except on the sink or the tiny shelf below the mirror - not a big deal for one night, might get annoying for two or three. Good breakfast, large portions for cooked food. We were charged twice for the room but that may be a function of the app as the hotel only got one payment - they are looking into it for us. Once that's sorted out we will definitely stay there again.
Not good for anyone with a disability, no ground floor rooms, no lift, too many steps up and down, even a high step up to the bathroom. No other room available.
Very poor sleep , bed was too hard , noise into early hours from drunk people screaming shouting beeping horns slamming car doors . No point in having curtains up because they stop zero light coming in the room
Nice room and a very pleasant Pub. Parking was easy and ...free! Had drinks and snacks in the Pub,all of which were good. Nice place for a stop over.
Hotel is ideally located, quality and overall room condition is well below average standards. Shower regulater didn't work, although a late booking, the shower was larger than shower space the fixtures were dated, although some upgrading in some places ongoing. Breakfast was ok and the staff was helpful and friendly. The carpets are well used an tired
Free car park but quite small and tight. Stayed here twice and got a space ok both times. Rooms are small and basic but clean and comfortable. Breakfast was from 7am and was excellent. Staff very friendly.
The Sun was generally tired but clean and staff were polite. Our issue was the nightclub next to the hotel our room overlooked Sun Street were taxis and picks up were happening along with large crowds of rowdy nightclub individuals at one point 50 plus of them right below our room. Noise went on until 2.15am Nightmare night of sleep.
very dirty - run down black mould on shower curtain - etc - no worthy of any stars to be honest
Me and my parter checked in around 3am then but got advised to call the number on the door and the nightstaff was very kind and helpful upon arrival checked us in no issues. I only booked the hotel because i was under the assumption i could check out at 12pm which was my mistake. We woke up around 11:30am by the manager I'm guessing, repeatedly knocking on the door to which my partner opened the door and said were just getting ready sorry we'll be a few mins. The lady then repeatedly kept knocking to which then i opened the door and said yes we heard you sorry were literally leaving. Then the lady then said were meant to check out at 11 so we're going to be charged for it and that she was going to call the police! I was sooo SHOCKED IN DISBELIEF i replied " sorry " ??? Im still shell-shocked by the attitude she had against us and have also taken it further by letting head office of green to deal with incident that occurred because nobody should have the right to speak to anyone like that. We simply checked in and went straight to sleep within 15-20 mins as we were both shattered. She was an eastern european lady with no professional experience in talking to customers. Highly rude and avoid her at all costs. Im sure head office will certainly take this seriously once reading the email of ordeal we went through. Disgraceful and absolutely appalled by how she conducted herself.
Friendly staff. Very clean room. The bed was very comfortable and the shower was perfect. And half the price per room than the local Premier Inn! All in all a very enjoyable stay.
Filthy room, came away with bites either from fleas I guess or bed bugs. Bathroom was very dirty, window ledges dirty, very dusty everywhere. Also noisy.
Lovely staff, great breakfast though they cooked wrong order they were so apologetic we almost felt bad. Checkin staff were great. The hotel is in ancient buildings so don't expect noise insulation, double glazing etc. The room was clean, large and comfortable. Bathroom was bit cramped but clean and good water pressure. Our room was one first floor over hotel entrance. Might have been noisy earlier but we were out till midnight and had no issues. Lovely location in olde worlde town centre. Parking was free and fine, glad we had sat nav to find it, it's down a windy access road. There were about 5 spaces left at 630pm so maybe you would struggle if arriving later. Overall good experience, would stay again but it is a basic not luxury experience.
Beautiful old building but could do with a major refurbishment- carpets and bathrooms are very tired. There was a party going on in the pub the night I stayed, so it was pretty noisy.
The property was very tired and didn’t seem very clean. Everything was fine but seemed like it hadn’t been updated in a long time.
We stay regularly and it us good value for money
Allocated room 9 & the heating didn’t work. Although to be fair there was a plug in radiator, but it wasn’t warm enough. Reallocated room 25. Which was a better room but the toilet wouldn’t flush solid waste away. It was fixed twice but still had issues. The staff were excellent though & offered to fix any complaints.
Nothing like the pictures at all. Very dated, Noisy pipe work throughout the night and paper thin walls.
The room was clean and comfortable albeit in need of some modernisation but this fact wouldn't stop me from staying here again. The staff very excellent as was a very delicious freshly cooked breakfast. Ideal location for the centre of Hitchin.
Room was quite tired and in need of an upgrade. Rooms small but to be expected for the age of the building. Plumbing needs attention as the pipe vibration at 0630 from another room showering at stupid a clock was a not needed wake up call.
For £105.00 on a Saturday evening in November this place was ‘pricy’. Considering you can get high quality budget accommodation nowadays for a lot lower price, this place is pushing it for the price. Well located in the heart of Hitchen, close to a 15 car parking allocation and all the shops within Hitchen centre you really are paying for the location. The room was adequate, had a funny smell (damp like) facilities weren’t amazing but ticked a box as available (iron, hair dryer, Tv, kettle, mirror etc. the shower was pretty tight - if your a big bloke you’ll struggle. If I’d of paid £50 for this it would have matched the price. Probably wouldn’t stay again.
Over heated room. Terrible shower. Miserable staff
totally run down, no elevator, no phone in room, bathroom door lock broken, water damage on doors, narrow stairs with no room to carry suitcases
Room was comfortable but needed some refurbishing, especially the bathroom. Friendly staff and good breakfast.
Centrally located within walking distance to shops bars restaurants. Friendly staff
Staff very nice, Room very tired and needing refreshed
We had a poor nights sleep because the fan in the bathroom never went off. We tried to resolve the problem, but couldn’t.
The hotel beds are very comfortable. However,I was charged twice for our stay. I’m still waiting for my enquiry to be dealt with, could not get an answer from the Sun hotel despite numerous attempts
Nice comfy beds, room was a bit dark and needed a new bulb in main light, informed cleaners. Generous with tea and coffee when asked for more. Very helpful.
Nice but dated budget property excellent locstion.
Don't like leaving poor reviews but feel it necessary. The lady who welcomed me at reception was excellent! Problems came with the room, for a large "historic" town centre hotel the room conditions (and the approaches to them) are shocking, furniture old and stained, bathroom condition very poor, mould between tiling, unable to adjust shower head as feeder pipe not long enough, Shower curtain!! bath stained, bath surround a disgrace! Would I eat in a Hotel with rooms like this? Would I feel comfortable recommending this hotel to a friend? Sorry but no.
Very enjoyable stay. We tried to extend but they were booked out. Very helpful staff, including the kitchen who served us we think after time.
I have used this hotel many times for business visits. Its location is great. Free parking is great. The building is quirky and old and i like that. Dont mind if windows are bit dodgy or bathrooms bit tired. However i stayed 3 nights this time and there was no housekeeping at all despite the fact i put the sign on door asking them to clean it. No clean mugs left for coffee. The bath was not cleaned and there was no shower. So i couldnt use it after first night as it needed cleaning. There was no wifi in my room at all. The desk staff are nice when they are there. But they really need to address the housekeeping. I stay a few times a year but may now need to look elsewhere.
Right in the middle of Hitchin. Convenient location to train station and public transport, great spot for local restaurants and pubs. Super clean rooms. There was construction going on outside the building at the time of my stay. So overall cleanliness was great. Very friendly staff. Overall excellent.
A nice friendly place in the centre of the town but let down by poor checks and cleanliness. A filled basin when I arrived. Just why?
The room (19) should not be listed as a room, after a walk up and around the whole building, you get to the room and there are more stairs. It's a converted loft that only has half the room usable (I'm 5ft 8 and banged my head far too many times). You can't stand up to use the toilet. There's no shower only a bath, not ideal if youre after a quick freshen up before heading out. When crossing from the bedroom to the bathroom, you cross the landing of the top of the stairs, which encroach in to the way over, very dangerous. The staff were very nice though, very polite and proactive.
My stay was good the staff were great.
Very quaint
The room was not clean quite the opposite. Very shabby in the room and in all areas of the hotel, it needs a good face lift. Staff were very nice and helpful and food was good.
Property very tired, lots of maintenance issues. Breakfast not a great experience.
The hotel is very obviously in need of significant expenditure on refurbishment. It is shabby in the extreme and even though the location is good as is the parking it is very difficult to understand why it benefits from a 3 star rating - I suggest 2 stars is the absolute best it deserves. I will definitely not be staying there again.
This is a 16th century building so many allowances can be made for condition. Frayed/torn carpets, yellowed mattresses and scratched/torn headboards are not on the list of things that can be forgiven. General cleanliness was good, location is great and staff are lovely but rooms need some serious TLC.
I've found some good and some average rooms and service here on different occasions. The on site parking and location is great. But parts of this room were tatty, the curtains fell off when i opened them, i told reception who said theyd fix it for my 2nd night, but didn't. No spoons for tea/coffee each day, but plenty tea/coffee/milk and good kettle in room. Very noisy pidgeons outside this room and the banging of pots and pans very early in the morning, combined with no curtain, dod not provide for a good night's sleep.
. 2 night stop . Lovely historic old Coaching Inn , however , if it could go wrong it did . Room was actually 30 metres away from the Inn . No wifi but a noisey plant room adjacent to keep me company all through the night 1st night no heating , 1st breakfast disorganised , 2nd night, no hot water , I'm not Scandinavian so icy cold showers aren't my thing - then no power or lights as workmen were on site and had cut the power. Apologies were made and promises that the manager would contact me to mske amends .. still waiting .
Very tired and in desperate need of an overhaul! Stained carpets, mould in the bathroom. Although the bedding was clean, no pillow protectors. Dirty stains on walls. Curtains not hung properly.
A great hotel right in the centre of the town. Great location, friendly staff and superb service. Breakfast was included and excellent. Will definitely be back.
Rundown and unwelcoming… This Olde English Inn is very old in terms of the age of the building and in the state of the rooms which require urgent modernisation and refurbishment to bring them anyway near to acceptable for the modern traveller these days. From the start, if the stay when I experienced one of the rudeness and most arrogant welcomes from a member of reception staff that I have ever received I should have realised that this stay was going to be a poor one. The route to the room was via a network of corridors and a steep set of curved stairs to the room door, one entry, on a very wet and cold day, the windows were wide open hence the room was like an icebox and then you discover that the hotel’s central heating is not working and the only means of heat was a small electric radiator which was never adequate for the job of heating a very cold room. Turning on the old television failed to produce any channels and a retune was in order, the Wi-Fi was good when you could connect to the service. The décor of the room was poor and required a refurbishment as did the awful bathroom which had not been updated for many decades, the shower was especially pathetic. Then we come to the noise, you could hear everything that was said in the adjacent rooms including the passionate sex and the use of the toilet coupled this with the noise when guests walked down the corridor past the room then you can see why I did not get much sleep that night.
Local, steps away from the Hitchin market, restaurants, pubs, very oldy worldy which i like.
Clean, comfortable room and very well priced breakfast - but most notable for the excellent, friendly and helpful staff.
shower and screen not exactly compatible with one another. Limited continental breakfast choices
I get it, it is an old building. However, neglect with door to the room, bad fitting of shower head fixture and no shower gel, and a badly maintained window resulted in a less than satisfactory stay. Again, I realise the building is old but that should be a reason to make sure everything within the room is checked and serviceable
liked property with plenty of character, but it has grown a little tired and standards lowered since Old English Inns days. Did not like tiny shower cubicle in room 1 nor bar closing at10pm on Sundays! Finally vegans and veggies are well catered for on the menus but those with coeliac disease(and they exceed both in numbers) are simply given the brush-off. Despite all that we will return.
The room was so awful, no shower, dirty, hairs left in the room, no mirror just a piece of cardboard stuck to the wall, and a glass panel in the door with no curtain?! It did not feel secure. I had to check out and booked into a hotel down the road.
Really enjoyed stay! Lovely spotless clean room! Stay helpful and nice
