Wow what an amazing property and such nice hosts. Also incredibly generous breakfast! We loved walking around the gardens and seeing the doves and chickens.
The hosts, the location, the view, everything was very clean and also very appealing to the eye. Breakfast was delicious! Best nights sleep in a long time!
They are closing for a year...

Great location with beautiful views Delightful hosts, very welcoming and friendly Would certainly recommend to anyone staying in Akaroa
Wunderschöne familiäre Unterkunft in traumhafter Lage.
The property had real character and is well situated. The owners are very helpful and complete the experience.
Lesley and John were wonderful engaging hosts that love sharing their historic home. The gardens are a work of love and a delight to explore. The breakfast was exceptional and lovely to meet other travelers at the meal. It was an easy walk into the center of town to explore the beautiful town of Akaroa.
Such a fascinating place with so much character and friendly history.
Nothing.
Lesley and John were fabulous hosts. Blythcliffe has an amazing garden, it was close to the centre of town, the room was exactly as advertised with a very comfortable bed and a bath and shower. The breakfast was lovely with freshly made fruit salad, yogurt, cereal, toast and eggs. They catered well for my gf coeliac diet even buying a new toaster for me! Lesley also helped out with access to the washing machine. There was a sitting room for guest use with a bar fridge and tea and coffee and sensational view over the garden to the harbour. The house is closing in May for a year for some major repairs and renovations. It will be amazing when it reopens.
The house is very old with steep narrow stairs that may be a problem for some guests (the self contained cottage is in ground level). Only one bedroom has an ensuite (our room) the other has a private bathroom immediately next door.
Lesley and John were lovely hosts, very helpful and friendly. The house was amazing. Good location. Breakfast was great.
Everything was great
John was a wonderful host and the grounds and gardens were awesome
Great location. Interesting building

Where to start? Incredible period property in lovely grounds. Hosts were superb and breakfast was lovely. Highly recommend staying here.
Historic charming B&B with wonderful gardens to roam. Easy walking distance to downtown Akaroa
Everything was great
Nice breakfast, lots of options. Croissants would be even better warm!
The weather!
Great and fresh breakfast. Great location. Great host. Beautiful building
The location was great with beautiful gardens. The owners Leslie and John were charming and provided excellent suggestions. John’s breakfasts were superb.

A beautiful historic property in a great location. The host was lovely and provided the best breakfast!

What a spot for my first night in NZ! Such a beautiful old house with a blooming garden, phantastic home made breakfast - and Leslie and John are hosts with passion for what they do! I am a well traveled person but this accomodation was more than charming - it was one of my absolute highlights ever and I regret not to have stayed for longer than one night!
Everything, the location, the charmingly rustic accommodation, welcoming hosts who are very knowledgeable about the area. Large room/appt. Great breakfast and finally lovely gardens to wander around.
Great tranquil location only a short walk from the shops and beach set in a pretty garden setting. The owners were pleasant and helpful and the breakfast was impressive. The room was very spacious.
The room was in need of some basic maintenance - screws coming off and shower head loose. However it had a lot of rustic charm.
Location, clean and beautiful setting.
Shower had no pressure
Locatie en gastvrijheid
We loved this beautiful historical house. Location is brilliant. Our room was a lovely size with a nice outlook and the owners had thought of everything to make our stay comfortable. We were travelling with friends and had our own little sitting room to enjoy a drink and view in. Breakfast was gorgeous. John was very hospitable and we loved his homemade croissants. Thank you for making us so welcome.
The room (stables/apartment with terrace) had everything needed with a very comfortable bed, the location is great for the town.
Such a nice old house with a awsome garden. Lesley und John are lovely hosts, giving good advises and caring for their guests. Great breakfast!

The hosts were such easy warm company, the grounds and house beautifully done, and the breakfast top notch.
Good breakfast. Lovely gardens
Bed a little soft for me
Excellent breakfast, charming history, host was most friendly.
Stairs inside quite small and room had no space to open suitcase except on bed and floor. No desk. Bathroom vent window could not be closed and it got cold ( snow on the mountains that night ).

Beautiful home, felt very welcome and appreciated the history of the area. Loved the room with the terrace overlooking the stunning garden.
Nothing, it is a gorgeous place to stay.
Interesting quirky place to stay, lots of history. Very pleasant and informative hosts
A beautiful place inside and out. Wonderful rambling gardens with quirky sculptures and antique items. Plenty of places to sit and enjoy. And the breakfasts were exceptional.

Historical building and very interesting garden. Great interaction with owner John
Bedroom floor a bit creaky but added to historical vibe I guess
Fabulous breakfast....especially mushrooms
Shower
A very unusual setting for the house with a large yard and a forest and small river in the back. All accommodations were excellent
This property was so “quirky” - it just oozes a great ambience. I think this property is one where you either love it (like us) or hate it. Our hosts John and Leslie added to the overall charm. And the breakfast was fantastic!!

Blythcliff is an incredible historic property with tons of character. The gardens are amazing and our room had an lovely view of the bay and balcony. The owners are very friendly and the breakfast was excellent. The inn is on a quiet street, but an easy walk to everything in Akaroa. Our room was very clean and comfortable and there were nice touches like a bathrobes and also a fridge in the upstairs sitting room with bottles of cold water. We enjoyed walking around the grounds, watching the chickens and doves, and the 100 year old eels who hang out in the creek.
Everything. It was quaint, comfortable, homely, warm. The owners were very hospitable. The breakfast was delicious.
Absolutely nothing. It was perfect
What a wonderful gem in Akaroa! The historic home has been beautifully restored with eclectic and historic decor. The gardens are gorgeous for a stroll with art sculptures (most of which was made by the hosts!) and lovely plants. Ask to meet the eels! Breakfast was excellent and totally on brand with the historic feel of the place. We loved our stay here, and the hosts were so much fun to chat with! Highly recommend!
Host John was very welcoming. The property was old and charming, with stream and eels. John showed us feeding time with the eels..! Breakfast was sumptuous.

Hosts, house and garden were all lovely! Breakfast exceptional!
Not a big problem, water pressure very low -but an old house, so to be expected!
The vibe of the property was very special and made for a comfortable, nurturing stay And the large bath was amazing and home cooked b’fast delicious
No complaints at all
Delicious breakfast Great location
The room is beautifully decorated and full of character, and the garden is just lovely. In the little creek behind the garden lives an eel who’s very close to the host, John — she’s surprisingly smart, and loves interacting with people. I highly recommend saying hello to her!

John makes a wonderful breakfast - the eggs and croissants are a must
The location was very central and easy to walk everywhere. Lovely garden and the breakfast was amazing! (All homemade and fresh)
The property was old and tired and could do with a good spruce up. Wi-fi didn't work in the room. Poor water pressure in the shower.
A beautiful home and garden with so much character, like stepping back in time. And the amazing home cooked breakfast included in the price.
When I arrived a felt quite heavy , after only experiencing Blythcliffe for a short period of time I felt lighter and happier. We both had one of the best night’s sleep as the bed and sheets were very comfortable as the room was so extremely quiet, also had lovely energy. The bed linen and styling was extremely relaxing
Can’t say we didn’t like anything.
Prachtig historisch pand. Fijne sfeer en mooi ingericht! Onvergetelijk unieke ervaring!
We booked the same day,and John was very prepared.Breakfast was quite the occasion with local produce & award winning marmalade. The gardens are full of creativity and sculptural promise.Exactly what we needed for our spontaneous two days of escapism.
We should have stayed longer
House and grounds were amazing. The host is very friendly and made great breakfast.
Nothing.
It had beautiful character buildings on a large, lawn and garden setting with some very interesting art & sculptures.

We spontaneously decided to stay overnight while visiting Akaroa and the place had everything we needed. The hosts were super lovely and friendly, accommodating to our rather surprise arrival. The interior transports you back into time, with its antique decor and jazz music playing in the background upon arrival. John took time to show us around the beautiful garden and to the lovely animals. The bed was amazing and the bathroom was nice and cosy with a bathtub and bath salts/bath bombs. The breakfast was stunning and beautifully presented, the host offered to cook us a plate of hot goodies e.g. eggs, bacon, tomato, creamy mushroom. The award winning marmalade was definitely our highlight of the breakfast! Thank you so much John and Lesley!
Good to note the hot water tank is limited. Best to wait a while to take a shower after the bath.
John was a very welcoming host, and his homemade croissants were the best! The home is situated in lovely grounds close to cafes, museums, etc. Enjoyable stay.
It was such a privilege to stay in this house full of character and whimsy. The garden surroundings were equally wonderful and full of surprises that give this home its unique appeal. There is a fabulous forest track that John has created that you can walk along amidst the birdsong. There is a breakfast is incredible! The smell of homemade croissants wafted in the air as we emerged down the stairs. Wow they are AMAZING. Alongside with a multitude of choices this breaky will fill u up for the day! However the most amazing experience was at the breakfast table where my husband and I were seated with two wonderful wellingtonian guests. Great conversations were had with us all and John entertained us with the most incredible stories, and showed us incredible artworks and props that he has made. Well this certainly spun my wheels🤣Such enriching conversations. Thankyou so much for sharing you and your home it was such a treat!
We had the absolute best time at Blythcliffe with John and Lesley. Our room was spacious, very clean and simply an absolute gem. The garden was breathtaking and the breakfast extraordinary.
A fantastic 'mini' break. Everything about our stay was perfect, enjoyed a little time in the end of day sun on the balcony with a beverage & nibbles. To start the next morning we had the best croissants we've ever tasted with amazing homemade jams. Oh my gosh - then John prepared us a beautiful cooked breakfast. Simply stunning surroundings. Thank you both so much.
Our mistake - not booking two nights!
Location
Shower in bathroom didn’t work very well
Lovely
Beautiful house, views would have been amazing if it had not been raining. Great breakfast to start the day.
The rain- but not the hosts' fault!
Great experience for old style house and beautiful decoration, ower was very kind, my son also had great time with the chickens and doves, really recommend to all ages.
Amazing character and decor of the house and grounds. Stunning view of the harbor. Pleasant conversation with owners.
Bed was not firm and shower water pressure was weak.
John and Lesley were very friendly and welcoming and we loved staying in their beautiful home and enjoying the lovely gardens. We also particularly enjoyed seeing the eels in the river and the delicious breakfast!
Breakfast was delicious, loved the beautifully set table and chatting with other guests.
Wi fi didn’t work for us ( and others )
If you want to stay at a genuine historic property, this is the place for you. Like stepping back in time!
