Excellent breakfast and accommodation.
The sauna did not work.
The property was beautiful and we loved that we could walk to Main Street.
We found the common areas chilly but some of our friends liked the temperature.
Location was great; ambience,
Reception OK! Restaurant was not functional, Tv not available for use had to have your own account to sign in for accessing channels, the room was just basic with one chair, no place to put your clothes i.e. chrster drawers, the jacuzzi was not easily accessible and dangerous to enter therefore unsafe for use. Missing light bulbs in bathroom and no bathroom fan without a window. Very much disappointed with expectations.
Location. Old charm
Decor in room was a little odd and room was very small
Location was good - walkable to places
The mattress could have been more firm. Extra blankets would have been ideal to have in the room as well. Black out curtains would be a good thing to put in the room
Really cute hotel. Comfortable rooms with a wonderful breakfast Sparkling water available for guests.
While the room was really cute and quirky this unfortunately also meant that some of the furnishings were not the most practical.
The staff were so lovely & helpful. Our stay was super cozy! A quick walk to the lovely downtown too
Location was great.
Seems like rooms booked through booking services & not booked directly with hotel are very small and outdated. Washroom barely had space to turn around in and shower faucet fell off and wouldn't turn off. Breakfast only included for guests that book directly - not with booking services.
Location
No dining room
Merrill House is a truly exceptional property. Everything from the curated decor, the individual room styles, even the signature scent - it's all wonderful. We stayed here for one night and could have happy stayed a week or longer. The bathroom was beautiful, the bed was comfortable, the breakfast was nearly too pretty to eat and delicious as well. The location of the house is also fantastic. Everything in Picton is easily walkable and the vineyards around the area are exceptional. Easily the best place we stayed during our two week trip
Ambience, decor, cleanliness, friendly and informative staff, location cloze to town and harbour
Evening restaurant now closed
Location
Bed was uncomfortable. Sinking in the middle.
Location was great. Staff were very warm and kind. Outdoor garden seating area was nice too. They had a written guide and discount codes for activities in the community. That was nice and useful.
The room was small but not too bad. Also, curtains don’t block off light. So once the sun rises, the room is flooded with light. They don’t have a sign you can displace outside the door to let house keeping know not to disturb. That will be useful for anyone who wants to sleep in and wouldn’t want to be disturbed.
Beautiful location. Had full access to house. Games downstairs for us to play.
Nothing. Everything was perfect.
The house is pretty. The staffs were friendly.
We stayed in the future room which is very small and dark.
Great outdoor areas to sit and very pretty and well kept. Rooms were renovated, clean and had everything you needed. Nice mini fridge . Staff, location, accomodation and decor were all very good!
Had not stayed in a very long time! Loved all the reno’s and changes! The staff very cheerful and helpful!! Thank you!!!
the building and the location are incredible the room was very charming
for the price per night, the quality of the services are barely ok compared to equivalent priced venues. You mostly pay for the history and charm of the place more than for the amenities. Be careful that booking your room with booking.com makes it so that the breakfast is not included. It cost us 40$ per person +tx for an omelet with one salad leaf. go have breakfast downtown, this is not worth it at all.
The house was lovely. Our room comfy and clean. The staff were so welcoming!
Nothing
Self service and lack of concierge on duty before 8 am and after 8pm Restaurant was closed
Gorgeous loved eclectic decor
No pool. AC too cool in common area - should have coffee bar available with snacks in common area. Espresso didn’t work.
superb property, stunning decor
we booked through bookings.com and found out that to include breakfast (which was complementary if booked directly) the extra cost was/ is of (35+5 )$ per person, which I find ridiculously high. Some of us are looking for a decent breakfast to get us going and not a “gourmet” one. We had to look elsewhere for breakfast
We spent the week at Merrill house and it lived up to all my expectations. I have wanted to go here since I was a child, driving by on our way to Sandbanks. I still remember the old "Rolls" sitting out front. We loved everything about our stay from the breakfast to our room and all of the common areas. Photos included. The staff really made our stay special and we look forward to going back. You get what you pay for here.
The location to town was great and the house was very nice
The bed was too soft for us. Plus we weren't given any information about the Sauna
Beautiful place
Everithig great
We stayed there recently and was very disappointed with our accommodation other than the location and the grounds. Our room was dark and the decor certainly did not match a historical home. A chair and shoes on the ceiling and dark artwork were not aesthetically pleasing. The walls were basic wood panelling and the headboard was cheap and tacky. The bathroom was lovely but very tiny and the door did not close. There is no offer of coffee or light fare throughout the day and breakfast is only included if you book through them directly. The restaurant is no longer in business. It would seem that the place is under new management and has taken a turn from previous ownership.

It’s a beautiful property and very unique
There isn’t anything I didn’t like about the property.
Not my favourite, uncomfortable overdone decor
This is a difficult review to write because the physical property itself is absolutely spectacular. Merrill House is beautiful, unique, impeccably maintained, and unlike any other venue we toured. The guest rooms are lovely, the setting is perfect for an intimate wedding, and every front desk staff member and housekeeper we interacted with was warm and welcoming. If you're looking for a boutique hotel getaway, I would absolutely recommend it. Unfortunately, our experience planning a wedding there was the exact opposite. We booked nearly two years before our wedding date, and from the moment we signed the contract, the planning process became increasingly stressful. Communication was inconsistent throughout, with response times sometimes stretching to months. We regularly found ourselves following up on unanswered questions, and key details often remained unresolved until the last minute. Over the course of our planning process, we were passed between six different people who were supposedly overseeing our event, including multiple general managers, event coordinators, and restaurant managers. Due to turnover, nearly every person we worked with left before our wedding took place. As a result, information was repeatedly lost, conversations had to be revisited, and there was very little continuity from one stage of planning to the next. What was most disappointing was that significant logistical changes continued right up until the wedding weekend itself. Some arrangements outlined in our contract were not honored as originally agreed, and changes were still being communicated just days before the event. Instead of feeling excited during the final weeks leading up to our wedding, we found ourselves managing issues that should have been handled by the venue. The closure of the restaurant prior to our wedding created additional challenges. The lack of an established POS system, uncertainty around alcohol inventory, and delays in finalizing menu selections all became urgent issues less than a month before our wedding date. These operational challenges ultimately became our responsibility to navigate rather than being proactively managed by the venue. What makes this experience especially disappointing is that the venue itself was exactly what we wanted. Our wedding weekend was beautiful, but that was thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our family, friends, vendors, and wedding photographer who stepped in whenever issues arose. I genuinely hope Merrill House is able to improve its event management processes because the property deserves to be an exceptional wedding venue. However, based on our experience, I would not recommend hosting an important event there. The setting is stunning, but the stress, uncertainty, and lack of consistent planning support made what should have been an exciting experience far more difficult than it needed to be.
Very disappointed Extremely small room- no space for suitcases or toiletries Mirror on closet door but door couldn’t open fully because of bedside table Breakfast very expensive and you are expected to do most of serving etc. another guest refilled our coffee
Magnifique décoration confort et service parfait
Rien
Celebrated my daughter’s meet and greet party with approximately 50 people and the servers were just plain rude. Everyone at this venue commented on the disinterest they had serving them. It seemed like ordering a drink was torture. Truly don’t understand why people do this job if they can’t be a little more pleasant. It supposed to be a happy occasion. Also the venue was outside which I did not realize so it was quite cool. We asked them for heater and the brought two tiny electric heaters. A decent business should know enough to either supply some heat or at least contact us so we could have at least rented some. After paying a pretty substantial bill, I would never recommend this place to anyone!
Rooms are kept a bit warm, and air conditioning is not controlled in-room.
We liked the decor within this beautiful boutique hotel. The room was nicely cooled. We loved it's proximity to the downtown area of Picton. We appreciated the slippers and brownies!
We found the bed rather small. We booked the Queen room but then the description mentioned a double room. We felt that the bed was more a double than a Queen. The TV was super complicated to operate!
Love the building, art work, staircases. It was beautiful
No top sheet on the bed, only the comforter. Could not control the heat, stayed at 22c all night long, we opened the window but had to have the curtains drawn as there was a huge spot light shining directly into the room The sheets and comforter on the bed were washed in some type of perfume, it should be fragrant free.
Very friendly staff, changing to a twin room resulting in an Upgrade. Great old building, great paintings on the wall, cosy fireplace.
Excellent breakfast but very pricey!
Stairs!!! TV issues. Heating problems.
I absolutely love how the Merrill leans into it’s spooky history in our notoriously haunted room. The welcome basket made us feel just that, welcomed. We love how they support local in any way they can from Toiletries and soaps to the goodies in the welcome basket. The breakfast was simply divine! I had a croissant that good since my family trip to Europe in the 90’s. What an amazing experience. A huge thank you to the staff at the Merrill for making our weekend so special! Highly recommend!
What a gorgeous property. So easy to walk to all the restaurants and boutiques. We were a small group of ladies, I stayed in the Dream room. It is not only whimsical and fun, but a perfect size for gathering a chatting. The staff are all incredibly helpful. We will be back.
Parfaitement situé
The facilities were lovely, the decor was beautiful, the rooms were thoughtfully put together, and the passport for local wineries was a great add on as were the brownies and drinks in our room. The location was perfect and the staff were extremely helpful and kind.
N/A
Beautiful home with all the comfort, interesting art and cool custom decor . The staff is very nice and helpful. The barrel sauna is a nice plus.
That we hadn’t decided to stay longer
Lovely dwelling - lots of little touches that makes it a great stay. We were there for one night and appreciated the stay.
Nothing.
I think we’ve found our new Niagara-On-the-Lake! What a beautiful place to stay… old, stately, but still somehow contemporary and fresh! We were greeted at the door and made to feel welcome right away. We booked the Victorian Room which was one of the original bedrooms in the house. Bed was comfy and we had water and local Soda available as well as a Nespresso. Bathroom was well appointed with a nice roomy shower. We didn’t take advantage of the fresh baked goods in the morning because we were still recovering from last nights dinner. Definitely a place to return to in the summer.
This was our third stay at Merrill House Inn, visiting for one night at the end of December while en route to another hotel for New Year's Eve. The property remains undeniably beautiful and full of character, and our second-floor junior suite was tastefully decorated and comfortable from an interior design perspective. The bathroom was tiny, and there was little storage for clothes, but that was to be expected. There’s a lot to love about the building itself, and it still feels like a special place when you arrive. That said, the experience has changed noticeably since our last visit three years ago. The inn no longer operates a restaurant and staffing on site is quite limited, which made the stay feel more like a guesthouse than a full-service hotel. We were told at check-in that there were “problems” with the heating. While our room did have a fireplace, it was supplied with only two pre-fabricated logs, which produced very little actual warmth. As a result, the room remained uncomfortably cool throughout the night. The following morning was similarly underwhelming, with a very modest offering of just coffee and a single croissant per guest laid out on the main floor. This felt sparse given the price point and the otherwise refined setting. Merrill House is still a unique and lovely property, but expectations should be adjusted. For our future stays in Picton, we would likely choose the Royal for more of a full-service hotel experience, or The Cape next door, where guests are treated to an impressive continental breakfast delivered right to their very spacious rooms.
Breakfast
Couldn’t really fault it except our room was accessible through the restaurant with heavy cases
Wonderfully comfortable beds.
The back stairs are tricky. Hand rails too big to grasp for small hands. The wifi cut out almost immediately after logging on…each time.
This is a Beautiful Small Hotel close to Downtown Picton The layout of the Victorian House with comfortable living spaces The room we had 204 with an amazing soft bed
Nothing. Great place
The architecture and interior design . As well as how clean it was
Pillows were a bit uncomfortable. But maybe a preference
The restaurant is closing; wish I could be sad. Our recent over $300 dinner for two on October 4 was overshadowed by their lack of common decency for someone with mobility issues. I had been told we were eating in the basement because there were seven of us to accommodate. We’ve been going to this restaurant for years and we knew the layout well. When we got to the restaurant the stairs to get to the downstairs had a large sign posted that that area was closed. After navigating a more difficult set of stairs, assuming the restaurant had chosen to seat us elsewhere, we were shown by a young man at the entrance desk a set of narrow stairs to get down to the basement. He should have known better, but appeared confused and uncertain. My friends commented on my ability to navigate these stairs and I replied it was because I was mad. What restaurant tells the customer they will be in the basement, then closes the easiest way to get there, knowing full well they have reservations for the area? ( Another large wedding group joined us in this room after we were seated). I did my best to recover my composure and enjoy the rest of the evening until at the end of the night the waitress explained that the restaurant was closing because they were moving to a an event only establishment. She commented how difficult it was, an able bodied woman, to go up and down all those stairs when there was a wedding, an event and the restaurant all operating at the same time. I wanted to slap her. We paid the bill, told her that I was going to use the closed stairwell and went home. I walk with braces and crutches. I am clearly, visibly a person with mobility needs. No one seems to appreciate this. I would HIGHLY recommend the Merrill House as they move forward, to CLEARLY indicate that they are NOT an accessible venue and I am happy that I will never have to go there again. Elaine Phinney
Beautifully restored home with all modern comfort. Be sure to book a dinner at the bistro, it is the high light of our stay.
Easy and accessible hotel with thoughtful room amenities - from snacks to towel heaters and robes. Staff were really friendly. I also got the vibe that this was a place made by the county rather than some one from outside profiting off the county, which is important to me.
I wish there was a do not disturb as my room was cleaned when I was there for just two nights and I'd rather have not had that.
Our stay at Merrill house was lovely. The staff are friendly and very helpful. There is good parking at the back of the inn. We had a smaller room and bed was slightly soft for our liking, but we slept well. We had a delicious dinner in the dining room and I recommend if you are staying there to book at least one night for dinner. There is a lovely bar downstairs where residence of the Inn can have a drink before dinner. Good choice of wines and spirits. Overall, a wonderful stay
Breakfast was great
Historic property with nice gardens. Location is excellent. Very close to downtown Picton and everything it has to offer. On site restaurant is excellent if looking for a fine dining experience. $$$$. Friendly staff. Room was clean.
Lack of on-site concierge. Only on site limited hours during our stay. We only saw someone once and that was at check in. Used phone number given (sent text) to request an iron and never received a response so cancelled request and did without. For money spent we felt room was plainly decorated and the two chairs in room were quite uncomfortable. Lack of plugs in room for charging devices. Not really suitable for anyone who may have a problem with stairs if not staying on first floor. Bathroom was nice but quite small.
Excellent petit déjeuner, personnel souriant, beau grand terrain à l’arrière, 5 minutes à pied du centre—ville de Picton, tout était parfait!
Good location.
Our standard double room was more like a small single. One side of the bed was against the wall so no bedside table for glasses, kindle or water. Not acceptable for the price. I was looking forward to the Gourmet breakfast but sadly it did not live up to its name. Very limited choice, omelet or french toast plus a small buffet with nice bread. No description of the contents of the omelet. I couldn't eat it as it had some runny cheese in it totally unsuitable for an omelet and not to my taste. Also very odd that we had to book a time for breakfast and my preferred time was not available. Reception staff start at 11.00 just after we had already self checked out. I sent various messages via booking.com as the waiter said he would try to waive the charge for breakfast but this did not happen. I was then told that there would nit be anyone with authority to refund the breakfast for 4 more days I am pleased to say that it was ultimately refunded. Some of the furnishings were bizarre such as a chair on our ceiling
Absolutely wonderful from start to finish! Merrill House has been beautifully renovated. It's a mix of antique charm and contemporary luxury. Each room has been meticulously decorated and is a pleasure to look at. Every detail has been thought about and carefully executed. Our room was so comfortable. Details to make the room luxurious, like the spectacular shower, four dressing gowns (a light and a warm one for men and for women), a fridge with soda and sparkling water, a welcome package with delicious treats, a whisper-quiet Dyson hair dryer, TV with Netflix and Prime available for your personal account. Both dinner and breakfast were memorable meals. The staff were helpful and friendly. Can't praise it enough.
I loved the location and the unique charm of the rooms, each had its own character, which made the stay feel special and was exactly what drew us to book here.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the AC to work in the room, as it was preset to only allow heat. This made the room quite warm for me and my husband. Additionally, the bed was not very comfortable, which made it difficult for us to get a good night’s sleep.
We recently booked 2 nights at Merrill house as we had a wedding in Picton. The hotel was perfect. We used one room to have a fun morning getting ready for the wedding and also experienced a group dinner at their restaurant in the evening. The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful for pre wedding photos. The staff were friendly and helpful (a big thank you to Beth, Melanie and Madeleine). Dinner and breakfast was delicious and if you book direct the breakfast is included. Do not hesitate to book here. You will love it.
Great location and beautiful hotel Rooms are clean and comfortable. Good breakfast
No elevator and stair are steep ( charm of old house)
Nice room
Concert next door, very loud music into the night. Didn't sleep well.
The staff were friendly and welcoming. The dinner we had and the breakfasts were all great. Plenty of parking
Need to book restaurant to guarantee an evening meal. We were penalised by the hotel for not using their website to book directly, but we would not have know about this hotel if it were not for booking.com. We had to pay for breakfast which was an option we chose but would have had that for free if booked direct. We were also charged an automatic service charge on top of the price.
The artwork and decor is amazing! The staff is so accommodating and helpful. Enhances the experience and beauty of staying the Merrill house
The hotel is a hidden gem..it is as like a jewlery box - nice from outside and outstanding inside. An eclectic style of interiors, an endless storytelling which goes through the whole property and beyond, great selection of wine and good food. I booked for one night and extended for the second one. Each room has got its own style. The team is attentive to your needs and responsive. You can really feel the love and passion invested into the hotel. That s a boutique hotel. The quitness of surrounding nature and squirrels instead of noisy cars of the big cities. Loved it.

I liked the old character.
Amazing place to spend a few days. The house is beautiful and staff so welcoming. We had local sodas and cookies as a welcome gift. Walkable distance to the cute village of picton. Highlight: they give passports to be used at local wineries of Prince Edward County. It includes multiple tastings to many wineries where we were welcomed to taste local wined for free. It was really anice add on to our trip. Only 15 minutes from Sandbank park. I would absolutely recommend.

We spent one night at Merrill House. All areas look the same as shown online, amazingly decorated with a charming tone and plenty attractive art pieces displayed. The room was in good condition (we stayed in The Parisian Room), a beautiful guest room. Room amenities could be more generous and in better quality considering the brand positioning of the hotel and the price paid. The French restaurant is exceptional, we had a fantastic and definitely enjoyable dinner. Superb! The freshly baked and made breakfast was good too. We understand it is a boutique hotel, yet we found its difficult to look for a staff for assistance. We had a truly wonderful stay experience in this old mansion.
Hotel was limited with the breakfast options, bar opening
Home away from home!
Unique design
Nothing
My parents had a fantastic time on their night away. They loved the books in the hotel and the food was delicious and they were given a special dessert.
The decor was unique but the room was small. The fridge and drinks provided were good. It was good to have a coffee tea machine in the room. Good location.
The room was small and I had to climb over the bed to get in. I thought I booked a specific room but when we arrived we were given a different room. No info on the breakfast so we went out to eat. I needed to know if they served a gluten free breakfast but when I asked they never got back to me. The path to the side door was dark and didn’t have a path from the front door.
It was unique and quaint
The sauna was not working
Bed was amazingly comfortable! Close to downtown.
