Beautiful location with a great onsen. We loved the private onsen and the lovely setting and view. Great food as well.
The free private onsen was a treat. The shared ones as well, we loved being outside. The kaiseki dinner was memorably excellent.
Just be aware that rooms don't have a shower, so you need to be comfortable with the onsen
- the staff were friendly, sincere and helpful - the food was excellent!!! appreciate half of the dishes!!! the egg with lemon peel, the fresh and sweet sashimi, the beef, the dessert... I couldn't help to tell the staff how much I liked the dishes and asked him to share my appreciation and happiness to the chef - the private onsen was a bonus - the washer
The private onsen, a great experience!
The location is a bit far off from other parts of the same town and onsen clusters, especially for those hiking.
The room is clean and food is great
The hot spring area is old and not very clean
A nice place to stop over while hiking the Kumano Kodo.
Expensive dinner.
Very friendly staff and beautiful private onsen
The room felt a little unkempt, one of the lights was burned out
The location is good and the pre set meal was an experience and very well executed. The onsens were relaxing after lots of walking .
All very archaic ! Felt like something from Fawlty Towers on steroids ! See for yourself but I think rather overpriced
Staff was excellent. Thank you!
An excellent stay. The staff could not do enough for you. The facilities and room were excellent - particularly the private and public onsens. Dinner and breakfast were a great voyage of Japanese dishes and were all extremely tasty and filling.
I could have done with an option of having an extra pillow on the bed as my head laid quite low but apart from that it was all to an excellent standard.
Clean Outdoor onsen Dinner and breakfast included Staff very helpful and friendly Good location Not busy
Hinta on varsin korkea verrattuna laatuun.
The private onsens were amazing and well worth not having an ensuite shower. Perfect after the day's challenging hike, and also because of my tattoos. No booking ahead of time required too. Food (kaiseki) was refined, fantastic, and very filling. We also really liked the cafe at the public bath side which had beer (draft, bottled, local craft, commercial), ice cream, and other izakaya style food.
I liked the private Onsen and helpfulness of the staff. First Yukata worn and dinner/breakfast with several courses.
For anyone doing the Kumano Kodo, I didnt have a choice to book this accomodation but it is not made for hikers. Dinner is a lot of fancy courses as well as breakfast which is beautiful but don't really feed you well after or to start a hike. That being said there is nothing better than an Onsen after a hike! 😇
Amazing onsen, comfortable room, spectacular breakfast, east bus access
Nothing
Room is clean and big. Amenities are complete. They have a beautiful compound along thr river. We even see a deer! The hotel also provided a free shuttle to and fro Honggu taisha for sightseeing. We have a lovely dinner in the hotel.
Although it is a onsen hotel, but the outdoor onsen was a bit disappointing. There is no good view.
The staff were really nice and helpful. The private and public onsens were amazing. The dinner was traditional Japanese and very tasty
The hotel looks a little dated but don’t let that put you off. The onsen is terrific and the staff offer traditional excellent service - nothing is too much trouble.
Onsen, breakfast, river sude location , next to bus stop
Cost
There are two Watarase Onsen hotels at this location : Sasayuri and Yamayuri. The Yamayuri is the one I have stayed for 2 nights. It is easier to access the Yamayuri from the main road. Secondly, most of the Onsen pools - public outdoor and private baths - are located at the Yamayuri. Speaking of the Onsen pools, the public outdoor is huge. You can order foods after you finished the bath because the entrance is a souvenir shop and a restaurant. The private baths are my most favorites. There are four private baths, and you can use the key attached to your room key to access it. The private baths are big. Each can accommodate 5-10 people easily. The meals - breakfast and dinner - are very good. The staff are excellent. The room has safe, and toilet but not bathroom. There is coin laundry machine on site also. From this hotel, you can walk to the free public onsen on Oto river.
None.
Marvellous food at dinner with fish and meat, excellent breakfast. Waiters and waitress: accurate, friendly, professional, a very high level rare to find. Super well organised hotel, magnificent service of the reception. We were very happy with the large private onsen outside, it is very relaxing with no limit on the duration, with plants and no mosquitos. Everything super easy. Hotel and dinner/breakfast not crowded.
Nothing
the food is fantastic!
Beautiful location on the river…the private onsen baths were very nice and much larger than expected and were easy to find openings many times in the night and morning. Perfect temperature. The hotel traditional breakfast was excellent. Would definitely recommend and stay again!
Wonderful hotel and onsen. The staff were lovely and helpful, and the food was amazing. Everything was amazing, no complaints
Private onsen baths and great traditional breakfast and dinner
Bit dated, a bit like a 1980’s Chinese hotel, but clean and comfortable
we spent a night in the hotel so we can start hiking Kumano Kodo early next day. nice hotel, they claim they have the biggest outdoor hot spring pool, but we used smaller family pool, the setting is very like outdoor pool.
The bath are great, very beautiful and very big. The private baths are very big! The breakfast was nice but there was too much to eat.
The hotel is quite old and would probably need renovation. The diner was very expansive and not that good for my taste. There was way too much too eat at every meal.
La experiencia ha sido muy buena. Hotel tipico japones
Great location and amazing staff with a lot of facilities
We didn’t find the aircondition in the room
I liked the food and cleanliness.
The sheets can be of better quality.
Perfect onsen experience
The private on sens which they had 4 so plenty and very nice. Breakfast was also nice but it's the natural and nature setting that was very nice, central enough to have all the mod cons but on the other hand remote enough so you felt with nature and quiet. Staff was very nice and helpful too. There also is a good laundry opposite that washes and dries, was very handy to use after many days on the road. Night is also colourful with very lovely light display was a surprise.
Nothing is was a great place to relax and feel with nature.
Beautiful location fabulous onsen. Private onsens easily available and included in the booking. This is a lovely classic hotel. The staff are helpful and very friendly. We didn’t book any meals but there is an on-site cafe that served reasonable good quality meals. The bridge over the river is lit up at night looks so pretty.
Fantastic.
I booked the meal at the hotel, both breakfast and dinner. Absolutely delicious.
The location and room were great.
The staff didn't speak English, so we communicated using a translation app. This made it a bit confusing to navigate the town and facilities. I can't blame them for this though since mostly local tourists seem to come here. Ultimately it wasn't too big of an issue, just worth noting.
4 nice private onsen are available with no need to book in advance; otherwise public onsen is available nearby the hotel. Good and large dinner. Old fashioned structure but with onsen and dinner was a very nice stay.
Amazing public and private onsen. Beautiful and clean room. Kind and friendly staff. Would highly recommend staying here.
A classic Japanese hotel! Private onsen was a wonderful experience!
Dinner and breakfast is not included with the room! I've read about the dinner not being included, but not that you have to make a reservation. So unfortunately when I arrived dinner was fully booked. I did not know that breakfast wasn't included. So I had to make other plans, and had to skip hiking for that day which I needed an early start for.
Nice hotel and amazing Food
The hotel is close to the Grand Kumano Shrine and has a shuttle service to and from the tourist information center. The Shinseki dinner and breakfast were both very good and quite large. The private thermal bath was nice if you want some privacy as a couple.
The hotel is generally in need of some significant renovation. Also the half board was quite expensive. Otherwise it is an ideal location for groups on the Kumano Kodo trail.
Amazing, multiple consents available Slightly dated, but I personally loved it Can think of not as retro or classic
Beautiful, simple, and spacious rooms in the Japanese-style washitsu that includes tatami mats as flooring. The hotel looks old, but it has a sense of history. The on-site traditional onsen, with both open-air private and communal-public baths areas, is one of the hotel's main attractions. The hotel provides yukatas (robe) and slippers for accessing the Onsens. It is about 5km from Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine, and the hotel offers a shuttle bus service to either the Hongu Information Cenre or Hosshinmon-oji. We stayed two nights and had a relaxing time time; it felt like a peaceful retreat. A great place to stay as part of the Kumano Kodo.
The facilities are a bit old, but the service and hot springs are great.
Very nice staff
The onsens and the comfort of the rooms.
The staff at the hotel very helpful. Onsen Bath excellent.
4 Huge clean outdoor private hot springs available. Spectacular outdoor public onsen steps away with 4 temperature pools. Suspension bridge was nice . 3 minute drive to Kawayu . Staff were extremely helpful when we locked ourselves out of room :D - thank you!
The private onsen were too hot for us :) Is it possible to have some at different temperatures and post temperature on the door? The public onsen was amazing alternative if you need cooler temperatures :)
We stayed here 1 night for the Kumano Kodo hike. The hotel is easy to find and close to the bus stop. There are 4 private onsens anyone can use. We don't really need to wait to get an open onsen room. It's quite big, can easily fit 10 people in the onsen pool. It also got laundry and food hall area that you can self-service.
I did not realize if you want to eat in the restaurant, you have to book the dinner/breakfast when you book the room. I don't think they highlighted that in the bookings website. So when I got there, I had no other choice but eat in the food hall area with self-service. The food end up to be quite homey and good, but I would eat at the restaurant if I could. Their restaurant meal looks wonderful.
The onsen
I was very impressed with the care and innovation with which my vegetarian food was prepared. The hotel is simple and oldschool, the onsen very nice!
Great place to stay as part of the Kumano Kodo. There are private onsen as well. Staff was really friendly. There are yukatas and sleepers to walk around.
It wasn't a problem for me, but just be mindful that most restaurants close very early
Beautiful setting. Food was great. Free shuttle to Hongu Taishia Shrine.
Remote and difficult to reach using public transportation. Property is dated. No shower in room.
The onsen itself is great - there are four private outdoor onsens that are on a first come first save basis but we never had to wait. The hotel made a simple but delicious bento for our hike - you order it the night before and it's great.
We did not book a meal plan originally and therefore could not take any meals at the hotel (not even breakfast) despite contacting the hotel a few days in advance to say we would like to have meals after all. Apparently it has something to do with booking through booking.com that can't be modified to add meals and they can't charge them separately either. So booking a meal plan upfront is highly recommended.
The baths are the absolute selling point of this hotel. They are well-maintained, open-air, and the private baths are a lovely experience to share with your travelling companions. The room itself was dated, but clean and functional. We had our own toilet and sink. It's worth noting that there are no showers in the hotel building (the showers are located at the baths, in a separate building). Convenient location with plenty of bus access to popular parts of the Kumano Kodo.
Adding formal dinner or breakfast to the reservation was quite expensive (Dinner: 8,800 JPY, Breakfast: 3,300 JPY) - we didn't dine at the hotel, so can't comment on whether it is worth the cost.
Private hot spring
the private onsen were great
nothing
